Hi all, does anyone know a good nail salon in Philly that has options for dip powder? It's the only kind of manicure that doesn't chip within a week for me. I would be getting the dip on my natural nails. I'd like to find a place that applies it by shaking the powder over nails vs physically placing your nails in the pot because it seems more sanitary. This is the size / shape I need- one all over color as well! this photo was taken right after I got my nails done- they didn’t offer any moisturizer for nails so yes they look dry I need tips glued on (my natural nails are short) I need an option that isn’t acrylic dip powder but will last 3 weeks at least (my nails would always last 3-4 weeks without breaking) I was paying $50 for the nails in this photo, and because I know the nail techs at these giant nail salons aren’t paid hourly- i would tip $30 because this set would take them about 45 minutes I got contact dermatitis issues on the tips of my fingers after 8 years of getting NexGen acrylic nail powder. I picked at the base/root of my nail and got this huge hole :/ i keep picking at the dry/hardening skin that grows over it and it bled recently as a result. This was a scary experience so I’m trying extra hard to not make it worse. the most effective way I’ve been able to not pick at my nails in general for the past couple years is via getting my nails done (powder dip). I get them done about every 1.5-2 months, I book a nail salon appointment as soon as the powder dip falls off one of my nails. I’ve been able have my natural nails painted and not use fake nails for years due to this routine I’m putting neosporin on it daily right now, but would it be ok to either get powder dip or get a fake nail to protect that area? I have finally had it with my current nail girl. I have been going to her for over a decade off and on , and now that I've had to switch from acrylic/ polygel to just simple dip on my natural nail, her attitude and quality of the nail sets she's been doing for me have gone downhill drastically. For the money that I pay, and have been paying every 3 weeks without fail for years now, the amount of promoting I do for her, the number of cards of hers I have passed out for her on my own willingly because the work she was doing was so good for so long, the number of people ive sent her way...and now this.!! I'm just over it I don't know if she just doesn't care as much because she's not making as much $$?? She's the owner of the salon! She doesn't have to pay anyone else, it's all her money!!! So IDK but I'm over it. So I'm in search of someone new...whether they are at a salon or an independent Tech out of their home, IDC I just need somebody that is nice, doesn't charge me an arm and a leg for a simple dip manicure (charging an extra $20 to rub some chrome powder over my nails is obscene I'm sorry.). When I first got dip powder at a nail salon, I got tips put on since I wanted my nails longer. Once the tips grew out and I just had dip powder on my natural nails, I started getting breakage. My nails were square shaped, and the breakage occurred on the corners. I just did my own dip powder nails for a second time. It went much better this time than the first time I did them about a month ago (pics to come later in a separate post). I did an almond shape. I did an apex (stripe from center to tip of nail, wider stripe from closer to cuticle to the tip of nail, and then entire nail). Then I did two coats of color dip powder and then a coat of clear. Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice because I’m a little overwhelmed with all the different manicure options and what’s actually best for nail health (if any). For context, I have a pretty bad habit of picking at my nails and the skin around them, and I’m trying to grow stronger, healthier natural nails. I’m not looking for longer nails or extensions. I’m considering going to a salon mainly to create a barrier so I stop picking and can let my nails grow, but I’m a bit confused by all the options/terms (e.g., builder gel overlays, hard gel, soft gel, regular gel, BIAB, gel X, dip powder, russian, etc.) My goal is not long extensions, just stronger natural nails that I’m less likely to pick at. Ideally I’d like something that protects the natural nail and is healthy if maintained properly. What do you all recommend? And for people who have dealt with nail picking or weak nails is going to a salon actually helpful for breaking the picking habit? Regular nail polish can absolutely look just as pretty as gel, but you have to approach it differently. Trying to force gel-style looks (like perfect baby boomers, chrome effects, or super crisp French tips) with standard lacquer is where most people get frustrated. Classic polish shines when you lean into what it does well: thin, natural-looking layers and healthy nails. Honestly, natural nails with good lacquer often look more flattering than thick gel overlays. The tradeoff is durability and the “special effects” world that gel makes easy. If you miss designs, there are still options. Nail stamping plates can create really detailed patterns with regular polish, but they take practice. Chrome powders can also work over air-dry polish if you use the right topcoat. Nail stickers and decals are another underrated option for quick designs without extra chemicals. Dip powder is sometimes suggested as a gel alternative, but it’s not risk-free either. This feels dumb but I’m in my mid 20s and never really had girl friends or girls in my family to get my nails done with. So last December my boyfriend’s sister asked to get our nails done together and she told them we were both getting full sets. During the process they glued a small faux tip on the end of my nail then brushed something onto it and then dipped it in powder. The pic attached is what I got and I loved it because I bite my nails and had never had cute long nails. Fast forward to went about a month later to get them redone. I didn’t have anyone with me to ask about it and I was not completely understanding what they said even when asking questions. She said she couldn’t fill it because dips were bad and can’t be filled. She then asked if I would rather do acrylics this time so they can be filled next time. I said that was fine. Then I went to another technician that I couldn’t understand as well…when getting them done he kept asking if I wanted tips. I said I want acrylics. And he just said you want tips then? I said yes, I just don’t want them super long. He then just took a brush and put it in some heated liquid and then created a bead with it and some powder then patted it onto my natural nail giving no extra length. Since they had been cut off when taking the “dip nails” off the were SUPER short and nubby. I thought okay he must have misunderstood which if fine I guess. But I have no idea what he did? Was that still acrylics? Please help with product recommendations for dry, brittle, ridged and damaged nails. My nails have been horrid post menopause, and in that state, I started with gel and sns dipping powder. Naturally, my nails further deteriorated and now I'm back to natural. Any recommendations on products? I started doing dip powder at home about three months ago and the application has gotten pretty decent but my removal process is clearly wrong because my natural nails are getting thinner and more brittle every single time. What I’ve been doing is soaking cotton balls in acetone, wrapping each finger in foil, waiting about 15 minutes, then scraping off whatever comes off with a cuticle pusher. Some nails come off clean but others still have this stubborn layer that won’t budge so I end up scraping harder and I think that’s where the damage is happening. My nails used to be pretty strong before I started this and now they’re bending and splitting at the tips which they never did before. The surface also looks kind of chalky and dull between manicures even after I apply cuticle oil religiously. I keep seeing people mention nail drill machines for removal and I’m wondering if that’s actually gentler than my current scraping method or if I’d just be causing different damage. The price range is confusing as hell, some are $25 and some are $300 and I can’t figure out what justifies that gap. My sister buys her nail supplies in bulk through either amazon or alibaba and she mentioned something about RPM ratings mattering more than brand name but couldn’t explain it further. TLDR Is it okay to keep nails on that haven't fully cured under the the extentions? I got them done on the 10th. The 11th-13th I'm on a work trip. 14th- 23rd I'm going on a trip to Japan. There's no possibility that I can get them done in that time, or even have the time to rip them off and do them myself. I knew I hated them when I left the salon, but I didn't realize they weren't fully cured until later when my fingers were sticky. The gel is squishing out from underneath into my cuticles. I've just been cleaning it with Q tips. I'll have them on for a full 2 weeks before they can be removed. The only other option would be I guess rip them off when I'm back from my work trip and... get press ons? So this is my first time ever getting gel x extentions. I usually do my natural nails at home with dip powder, but I broke one at work and have a trip coming up that I wanted my nails done for. I found a place that was 4.9 stars and had over 500 positive reviews with photos, and the photos look really good!! Well my experience was awful. 3 of my nails took 2 tries to get them to attach and he had to rip them off, which hurt. He had to cut off my natural nails for those 3. He asked why I don't just do acrylic. If you don't want to do gel x, maybe don't offer it? Idk. He also made the gel under the tip incredibly thick where it kinda glued my skin to my nail. I didn't like the shape. He didn't do the cat eye the way I had asked. Some are on a little crooked. Yes I mentioned all of this to him more than once. He couldn't do the design. To elaborate on that, I had asked for a simple Sakura design since I'm going to Japan. I really can't express how excited I was to have these flowers on my nails for my trip. I'll attach the reference photo, but he seriously made white scooby doo mystery machine flowers. Not even pink! Not even in the same realm here. I was like "those aren't the same flowers..." and he said "they're similar". So yeah, I told him never mind. I don't even want a design. I left, absolutely hating everything about my nails. Maybe I'm too picky, and I suppose all of that could be overlooked, but then I discovered that they aren't even fully cured. I was filing them at my house because all of the edges were rough, and I noticed my fingers were sticky. Then I noticed there was a bunch of fuzz stuck in something sticky in my cuticles. I pressed hard on my nail bed, and you could see the gel squishing out!! And at this point, it's way too late for me to do anything about it. I just took my pics, squished as much out as possible, wiped every cuticle out with a Q tip, and went to bed. So yeah, that's my nail horror story. I'm feeling super nervous about keeping them on because I'm positive moisture can get under there. I really don't know what to do. I'm so sad. Should I rip them off when I'm home from work?? I've been using the GLAMRDiP powder set for a few weeks now, and despite proper prep (push back cuticles, dehydrate nails, avoiding skin) I cannot get my nails to not lift after just a week.

DISCLAIMER: Please put me in my place if I'm being delusional/selfish/pretentious/exclusionary/over-reacting/nitpicky/contradictory. I will promptly delete this post if it's not appropriate. I am NOT in the business of purposely hurting anyone's feelings, nor do I want to create drama of any kind or want anyone to feel excluded. My intention with this post is to have an open and CIVIL discussion from all Lacquerists' perspectives on this topic. I spent some time searching through this sub and I haven't seen this topic be brought up yet. With that being said: I personally would really like to see posts about FULL gel/acrylic manis be banned from this sub going forward (NOT including manis where polish is used in conjunction with gel/acrylic.) There are SO many other popular and wonderful subs out there for these products. And to be fair, some of those other subs have also banned discussion of regular nail polish (for example r/DIYGelNails banned polish and r/nailpolish has banned gel) so in that respect, I don't think it's all that controversial or exclusionary to ban full gel/acrylic mani posts here. I am personally in this community because I'm interested posts/discussions about nail polish only and I really enjoy the community of other Lacquerists. Considering the name of this sub, I was under the impression that was the intention of the sub. (lacquer =/= gel polish or acrylic) For context, I'll share my personal experience to shed some light on part of the reason why I personally feel this way, because I know there are probably others in this community who also have this shared experience: I accept that I am 100% biased because I have the allergy. But I love this community, and it has been like a safe haven for me ever since. I was devastated when it happened to me. I know that will sound really over-dramatic to some, but nails have been my #1 hobby since middle school (I'm 31 now!) I got my first ever acrylic set when I was 11 years old, and I was instantly hooked. When I became allergic a few years ago, I felt like I would never have pretty nails again. My natural nails were destroyed and my fingers in general were a mess. It took a really long time for them to just get back to normal. It made me really depressed for a while and it negatively affected my self-esteem. Seeing my friend's salon manis and seeing posts & videos all over social media of other peoples' beautiful salon manis and seeing all the fun & pretty gel polish trends that I was missing out on would make me so sad and envious. It was just a constant reminder that I would never get to have the salon experience again. I loved my nail tech, chatting with her and getting my acrylics every 3 weeks brought me a lot of joy. I loved getting my nails done. I still miss the salon to this day! When I discovered this community accidentally, it instantly resonated with me. This community has helped me so much in that respect; I learned how to properly take care of and love my natural nails, and I've learned how to do long-lasting & high-quality lacquer manis from everyone here. I have gained a LOT of confidence back and then some. I love interacting with everyone in this community about everything NAIL POLISH related, it has healed my self-esteem a lot and I can finally say that I love my nails again. Seeing your gorgeous manis and incredibly clever ideas in this sub is so inspiring! Discovering all the indie brands and collecting unique colors just brings me SO much joy. 💖 I love buying a big haul from these amazing creators, and knowing my money is going to real people who genuinely love & take pride in their craftsmanship makes me happy. But seeing more and more posts trickle into this sub from people who are doing gel/acrylic only is quite literally irking my soul. Again... I don't think this is exclusionary from my perspective because there are plenty of other subs for these posts, some of which are larger than our sub! (r/Nails for example with 4M users) I want to reinforce that this should NOT apply to people who are using gel or acrylic in conjunction with nail polish (ex. gel base/topcoat with polish/stamping polish, polish on top of builder gel or dip powder etc.) ... But when someone posts a mani with a FULL gel/acrylic product list, I just can't help but wonder... why are you here?? I know a lot of people are probably going to tell me to, "Just keep scrolling" which is fair. I love that we are a welcoming and inclusive community to ALL Lacquerists, but every post has a place, and I just feel like full gel/acrylic is totally off-topic in this sub. Sorry for ranting on like this! Again, I fully accept my heavy personal bias. Please tell me if I'm totally off-base here. I am open to criticism. I have absolutely zero knowledge about moderating a sub, so I am completely lacking in that perspective. I’ve been getting dip powder consistently for 3 years but recently decided to stop for budget reasons. I’m seriously regretting that in this moment because my nails look HORRIBLE. They’re super weak and full of ridges (I also think the tech left glue on some of them), and so many were about to break that I ended up just cutting them down. I can’t even paint over them right now because the texture is so uneven it looks awful. I used to always get complimented on my nails and they were naturally very long. What are your reasons for choosing to use nail polish over alternatives like gel, dip powder, press on nails, etc? There’s the obvious one that I would assume is the reason for most - less risk of developing allergies. But are there any others? Nails have been a hobby of mine since 2012, and I spent a large chunk of that time only using regular nail polish. I was around when indie brands first started to become popular, and that was a super exciting time (anyone else remember this?!) I had a nail polish blog for a number of years and had a huge collection of polish at one point. Over the years I’ve had periods where I dipped (lol) into other systems such as gel and dip powder. Now that I know how to do all sorts of nails and have the tools to do them, I struggle to decide what I want to do! Does anyone else switch between natural nails and false ones? Hi everyone, I’ve been doing dip powder nails since August 2023, and after recently learning about acrylate allergies and it impacting current/future dental work I decided it was probably best for me to pause doing my own dip powder, go natural and possibly transition back to nail polish. I’ve been told conflicting information regarding my concerns, but until I get better information I just decided to quit dip. Maybe not forever but just for right now. After months and months of dip, my nails are so thin. They bend when I touch them, but they don’t hurt. How long will it take for my nails to get strong again? Should I just load up on nail oil? Currently wearing Ella + Mia Nail Hardener, the ingredients looked okay so I went with this. OPI Nail Envy appears to have acrylates. I’m looking for brands that’s easily accessible (don’t always want to buy online. If I can buy something in store that’s better for me) that will be safe to use long term. Any help and support is appreciated. I know people are trying to save money and so more natural hair, nails, etc. Are coming back in. My nails grow fast and I typically do a powder dip, almond shape, and either red or bubble bath with put it in neutral. I am almost feeling like my nails need to look MORE classic and MORE elegant. Are some of you going completely bare nailed? What’s the chicest and cleanest look? I have long, thin, fingers with long nail beds and nails that grow great.
