I keep seeing posts comparing electric bikes to a traditional off-road motorcycle like they are direct replacements. That sounds nice in theory. Reality feels different once you start riding regularly. I moved from a small gas trail bike to electric about six months ago. My expectation was simple. Less maintenance, quiet riding, same freedom on trails. Some parts delivered. Some parts absolutely did not. First thing nobody talks about enough is range under real conditions. Manufacturer numbers assume smooth riding. Add hills, sand, or repeated acceleration and battery drops faster than expected. On my local loop I lost almost 40 percent range compared to advertised specs. Second issue is heat management. Long climbs are where you learn quickly what your controller and battery can tolerate. After about twenty minutes of aggressive riding, power reduction kicked in. Not failure, just protection mode. Still frustrating when you are far from the truck. I researched parts before buying and even checked some Alibaba listings to understand component sourcing. Interesting thing is many frames and motors look similar across brands, but quality control varies a lot. Same design does not mean same durability. Electric bikes are great tools, but expectations need adjustment. They are not yet universal replacements for every off-road motorcycle use case. Question for riders with more hours logged. What failure rates are you seeing after one year of trail riding? Motors, batteries, suspension wear? My wife (30F) has been a life long dirt bike rider. Many of her great childhood memories have involved riding with her friends and family. It’s a large part of her identity. Despite her best efforts, I (35M) have never enjoyed riding dirt bikes. I didn’t grow up on them, I don’t like riding them now. Never have and never will as I’ve explained to my wife several, several, many dozens of several times. The problem is that her dad has always fixed and maintained the dirt bikes for her. She has never fixed them herself beyond holding the flashlight while he teaches her how to swear while changing the oil. We’ve recently moved away from her dad and have taken the bike with us and inherited the responsibility of maintaining and fixing any issues with the bike. When making plans for this weekend, she assumed that I would be involved with getting the bike running again. I refused to get involved since I have almost no experience with anything internal combustion. I’ve fixed the air filter on a lawn mower once. My arguments: I would have to learn how to maintain and fix a dirt bike for a hobby I don’t enjoy or would participate in, taking time away from other chores and my own hobbies to support hers. Maintaining the bike and fixing it when it breaks down is part of the hobby and she needs to decide if that is going to stop her form participating in a hobby she loves. Her arguments (trying in good faith to represent her side): That we agreed to support each other when we got married. That she never would have agreed to marry me in the first place if she knew I wouldn’t help her with something as meaningful to her as this. She’s worried that she will break her bike and we will need to pay more to fix the damage she causes. Hi guys, I need some advice on getting my first bike as I don't know a whole lot about everything yet as I come from Freestyle Bmx. I'm a 22 year old female about 5'5, what bike would be best for me as my first bike and learning? A yz85 lw or yz125? I would eventually like to take it to the track. My budget would be around 3K! Get your 4 year old a dirt bike everyone said. No big deal everyone said. Well you know what?! It is a bid deal! Look at what has happened to my garage in the span of 3.5 months! Just look at it!! You should all be ashamed of yourselves. You just casually recommend a hobby nonchalantly and fail to mention that it’s like reading a friggin if you give a mouse a cookie book. If you give your son a dirt bike, he’ll need some gear for it. If you get him the gear, then he’ll want to ride every weekend. If you take him riding every weekend, then you’ll want a bike of your own. If you get a bike of your own, then you need gear too. Then mom see’s everyone having fun riding every weekend and wants a bike too. Then mom needs gear too. Then your daughter.. you get the point. Not one person decided to mention that by getting my family into this hobby we would be completely consumed by it. Now look at us, going outside as a family, having fun together riding dirt bikes and living out every dad’s dream of a garage full of dirt bikes. It’s like taking a recommendation from the tobacco lobby in here. I've always loved riding dirt bikes in real life (although I haven't owned one in years) and playing the video game adaptations when i was younger. I have a collection of over 1000 physical video games but I mostly focus on JRPG's, which is my favorite category. But I noticed that I started to have a few dirtbike games and I figured there couldn't actually be that many of them in total and they were dirt cheap and in every used video game store so I put together a spreadsheet and realized there was only just over 100 of them with many of them only being about 5 bucks so I spent about a year collecting all of them! My parameters were to get all physical games devoted to dirt bikes, or if the game at least had a main dirtbike mode in it and was released physically in the US on consoles. Although eventually, I ended up buying PC physical releases because there was only about 10 of them total and I even bought a couple PAL and Japanese exclusives because there was only about 5 or 6 of those in total as well. Now, technically, I am missing one expensive and rare GBA game - Moto Racer Advance which sells for $200+ cart only, I am looking to get a repro of it if I can. Also, there is stunt kids on NES, which is not an officially licensed game and also expensive and I'm not sure if that one counts. Maybe I'll get that one someday. And then there is one new game that just came out Monster Supercross 25, which I'm just waiting to receive in the mail. There's also one physical DOS game called Motocross from 1989 but it's like $150-$250 and technically I don't collect the PC games. Those are the only outliers. Based on Google searching, I think I might be the first person who has ever collected every physical dirtbike game! There is a thread in this sub Reddit from 12 years ago by user named u/m0t0420 he had collected a bunch, but it was far from a full collection. But I hope I did him proud by finishing the job.
