We’re planning a Disney World trip with our 2-year-old and almost 4-year-old, and I’d really love some honest input from other parents. Our goal is to keep things enjoyable and not push the kids. My almost 4-year-old has recently entered a phase where she argues a lot and can have big tantrums when she’s overtired. We’re planning to: Arrive at park opening Stay until around noon Head back to our offsite hotel for naps/rest Spend the afternoon at the pool instead of returning to the parks We’re visiting all four parks: Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios. I’d love advice on: 1. How much can we realistically fit in the mornings? Since we’ll only be in the parks from opening until about noon, I’m trying to set reasonable expectations for myself. The kids have never been so they won't know what they are missing. Most parks open around 9am, so that’s only a few hours. I’m hoping we can do at least 3 rides in that time, but I’m not sure if that’s realistic. We’re also considering Lightning Lane, but I’m a little confused about how it works with reservations/time slots and whether we’ll actually be able to get times that work for us since were only staying until around noon. Also, I’m trying to plan for the fact that some rides will be good for my almost 4-year-old but not my 2-year-old, so I may need to split up at times like one parent with the older child on a ride while I do something nearby with the younger one. Is this what most parents do? 2. Are character meals worth it? Are they actually enjoyable for kids at 2 and 4 age? At home, we do family meals every day, and my kids are usually done eating after a couple bites and pretty wiggly at the table. I’m curious if the character meals are entertaining? I've never done one so I have some questions. A few specific questions: Do kids typically dress up in fun outfits for these meals? Are characters actively interacting and doing little “shows,” or just walking around briefly? Is seating more like a regular restaurant (your own table), or more shared/group-style seating? What character meals would you recommend for this age? This is so random but I often think about how Sydney went to Epcot one time and showed us really cute outfits before she went like cute athletic clothes and Mickey shirts and then wore the weirdest pants and a black fitted shirt. It was so hot and she looked ridiculous. She could “eat around the world” and show us healthy food options or just have different content for once. Since it's been announced that Aurora, Ariel, Belle and Mulan would be appearing in their "villager" outfits at Regal View, I've seen a lot of comments from parents saying they're disappointed that they will not be appearing in their ballgowns because their kids won't recognise them, and they've cancelled their reservations It's a shame there is so much negativity. For me their villager outfits are more iconic than their ballgowns (especially Belle's blue dress). Maybe show the kids the princess films and get them familiar with the outfits?? They appear in their dresses in the main park all the time, I think it's good they are in different outfits to make their appearance slightly more special in the new area. Someone made a good point that their villager or hero outfits are more in keeping with the theme of Adventure World I do think some parents are over-reacting but I guess they have to do what they feel is best for their kids. I (m37) have 3 daughter’s ages 15, 6, and 5. We’ll call my 15 year old “Taylor”. I had Taylor with my College GF, we broke up when Taylor was just a baby (under a year old). We coparented well together. Now that Taylor is older, she comes here when she wants but primarily stays with her mom since she's closer to her school/ friends. I got married to my now wife 8 years ago, we now have 2 daughters together. Taylor’s always gotten along great with my wife and her little sisters. Me, my wife and all 3 girls went to Disney world for a few days. Taylor has always been a huge Belle fan. First day at Disney I had some work to do so I got up early and got ready and went to the lobby while the girls got ready. When I went back up to the room my youngest 2 were dressed in princess dresses and crowns. While my oldest had on a very what I would call belle themed outfit. When I saw the younger 2 I said you two look just like princesses. My youngest asked what about Taylor, Taylor in the last few years has been over the cute pet names. So I said I think Taylor is a little too old to be a princess but she's very pretty. Taylor said thanks but sounded a little off. I didnt think anything of it. We had a good day, Taylor was distant with me but having fun with my wife and her sisters. I figured I would ask her when we got back to the hotel. Well I got a long angry text from my ex wife, saying Taylor had texted her that I called her sisters princesses but not her and said she was too old to be a princess and that really hurt her feelings I guess. I reminded my ex that Taylor has hated cute pet names for years now. My ex said considering we’re at Disney and Taylor was in a Belle themed outfit I should have thought that she might have wanted to be a princess for the day. Things I learned During My First Trip to Disney World WATER I saw too many people passed out for you to not heed this warning just because it seems obvious. While you are at Disney, drink water... drink only water. Leave the soft drinks for when you're back at the hotel. You don't like the taste of water? I get it. Bring the mix-in powder packs of Gatorade, Propel, (in our case) Liquid IV, etc. with you. You're going to need the electrolytes anyway. But don't wait until you get on the grounds to buy that stuff, especially the water. Plastic bottles of water at Disney start at $6. Reusable aluminum water bottles are a godsend and should be purchased and brought with you before you even get to Florida. Whatever you get should be great. Each park has these filtered water stations and/or Coke Freestyle machines where you can fill up your water for free. Drink the water while you wait in line and fill up again the next time you see a station/Freestyle machine. Use those instead of the water fountains because Florida water tastes like metal. COMFY SHOES My wife and I each bought a pair of the Nike Promina walking shoes prior to our trip. When they arrived, I didn’t even try them on because I thought they looked ridiculous in a size 11. I sent them right back and decided to just wear some Chuck Taylors I already had that seemed comfy enough… I was the only one of us complaining about my feet hurting. You will do an ungodly amount of walking and an egregious amount of standing. You don’t have to buy the Prominas, but please find some shoes that feel like clouds because you’re going to need it. And, if possible, give yourself a few days to break them in and truly assess how good they feel. COOLERS I strongly suggest bringing your own food to the parks. Going to the Be Our Guest restaurant or The Crystal Palace is awesome. But you can’t go there while in a 90 minute line to get on a ride. Any child you’re with will have a whole lot less tolerance for being hungry than you. So have food to tide them over while you wait. We had a cooler about the size of a tote bag filled with sandwiches and snacks. PRO TIP: Wawa is a gas station all around the area that's also well known for their handmade hoagies. Now until July 27th, it's Wawa's Hoagiefest which means you can get all their hoagies, club sandwiches, and quesadillas for no more than $6. They're AT LEAST as good as food you would get at either park and able to be stuffed in a cooler for lunchtime. PONCHOS Bring ponchos. They will take up virtually no space in your luggage. Don't wait until you need them in the parks to get them. Not only are they crazy expensive, but once you need it, it's probably too late and you'll be drenched. Trust me, IT IS GOING TO RAIN! Buy some good ponchos where the plastic has some heft and enough length to cover you and your backpack. WATER RIDES Another reason you should have ponchos on deck is for the water rides. Some have signs that say, "you might get wet," which means you will absolutely get wet. Some have signs that say, "you will get wet, possibly soaked!" You will definitely get soaked on those. So have a poncho ready. Also, it's a very "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service" type situation. Therefore, you need to have some flipflops in your backpack ready to change into. SHADE Shade can be hard to come by. Sometimes the lines are so long, you're outside of the confines of the ride and just standing in the blazing sun. So, of course, use sunscreen liberally. But a sun umbrella is an excellent thing to have. Not just a regular umbrella (though that works, too), but one with UV protection. Keep in mind, it does double duty. Because, as I mentioned earlier, IT IS GOING TO RAIN! MERCH Every Walmart, Target, Publix, etc. in the surrounding area has Mickey Mouse ears, character graphic tees, and the like. I'm not sure how much of the stuff at the parks' gift shops are exclusive to the park, but it seems like the outfits and snacks are at least easy to find without buying it there and paying 2-3x as much. BUILD A LIGHTSABER If you and/or your kid(s) are even passive Star Wars fans, if you have the means, if anything you read prior saves you enough money to consider it, go to Disney Hollywood Studios and build a Lightsaber. It will set you back $270, but it is a complete experience. They give you a menu based on what kind of person you want to be in the Star Wars universe (my kid chose "power and control" which I shouldn't have been shocked by). Then you're taken into the build room with an actor that is fully engrossed in the role while also interacting with everyone there. I don't know if the actor we had is there all the time, but she was incredible. During the build, they have people there to help you put it together. You get to choose the color of your Kyber Crystal, and you can customize your hilt. The looks on all the kids' faces when everyone's Lightsaber is ultimately activated pays for itself. A note before you go: ONE person is allowed to build, and ONE person is allowed accompany the builder. TAKE A BREAK We did every park in as many days. If possible, do NOT do that. If you can do two parks, then a full day off, then two more parks, that’s great. All of the walking is going to take a toll and you’ll need some recovery time. Otherwise, by the time you get to the last park, you might not have the energy to do as much riding as you’d like. If I think of anything else pertinent, I’ll add it later. Yesterday, my family visited Disneyland, and while it was magical and full of heartwarming moments with my seven-year-old, the day also highlighted the growing class divide within Disney parks. The experience cost us somewhere between $3,000 and $3,500—a significant sum. For that price, we created memories that felt truly unique and impossible to replicate elsewhere. We are fortunate to afford this kind of trip, but my wife and I come from extremely impoverished backgrounds. We’ve only reached our current level of financial stability through a mix of timing, risky decisions, and sheer luck. These roots shape how we view the world, and Disneyland is no exception. Each time we go, the disparity between families with different financial means becomes increasingly visible—a kind of “Disney caste system.” The System Behind the Magic Disney’s business model has evolved to cater more directly to higher-income families. It makes sense from a profit-maximization perspective: a single top-tier family spending thousands can generate as much revenue as five or ten working-class families. But this shift has created a divide in how the parks are experienced. Yesterday, we arrived later than planned, missing the “rope drop.” For the first few hours, the park seemed manageable, with most standby ride times hovering around 40–50 minutes for the busiest attractions. Still, the hierarchy of access was clear from the start. Paying for Privilege On our last visit, I purchased the Lightning Lane Multi-Pass (LLMP), and it felt like an excellent value. For $35 per person, we were able to schedule rides and bypass long lines. While it required constant attention to the app and plenty of walking back and forth across the park, I found the scheduling aspect engaging, and my family managed to ride 14 attractions with minimal waiting. This time, I decided to upgrade to the Premier Pass, which costs $300 per person and offers unlimited access to Lightning Lanes without scheduling. While it felt like a splurge, it eliminated the stress of constant scrolling and allowed us to enjoy more of the park’s offerings, like dining, parades, and fireworks. Yet, this ease came with the unsettling realization that our financial privilege was directly tied to other families’ longer wait times and diminished experiences. The Disney Caste System The class divide within the parks was glaring. My wife observed that the Premier Pass seemed to push Lightning Lane Multi-Pass users closer to the experience of standby visitors, as their schedules were delayed by Premier Pass drop-ins. On certain rides, like the Matterhorn, only Premier Pass users could skip the standby line, creating an eerily exclusive experience. When we rode, the standby line stretched 70 minutes, but the Lightning Lane was nearly empty, with just our family and another Premier Pass group. Even with the Premier Pass, we noticed there were tiers above us. The VIP tour groups, escorted by dedicated cast members, epitomized the highest Disney caste. At one point, we saw a group of children on a VIP tour, essentially being babysat by a cast member. Perhaps blackout dates for Premier Pass or limits on Lightning Lane usage could help rebalance the experience. But ultimately, Disney has embraced a model where access and convenience are sold at the expense of the majority. While this system may be profitable, it risks alienating the families who make up Disney’s core audience. My family’s day was wonderful and memorable, and if I have the opportunity to give that increasingly rare experience to my daughter I will purchase it a hundred times over, but it left me reflecting on how Disney’s magic increasingly comes at a price—and how that price reinforces the inequalities of a broader capitalist system.
