(I yap! Post is long!) Hi! We're a couple in our mid 20s that just returned from a 5 night stay at live aqua cancun (late may 2026) :) it was our first time in mexico/ going AI and we got so much help from this subreddit and want to pay it forward with a review. Overall: 8.5-9/10 for us honestly. The vibe here is perfect for us- relaxing, calm, and luxurious. There were no loud parties and while you definitely could find a good time, it was kept separate from the main areas. The ages of the guests ranged from our age to around the 60s and we didn't feel too young or too old here at any point. Lots of couples. The amazing service and overall upscale feeling were the highlights for us and we felt well taken care of without being surveilled the entire time. The food was way better than we expected for a resort, and the rooms in our opinion were beautiful. We wished that the drinks were a little stronger and that sargassum cleanup was a little better, but neither really impeded our stay here. Given that this is our first AI we'd probably try others just for novelty sake, but we would be so happy to stay here again (although maybe not in sargassum season). Perfect for: couples who want a relaxing, upscale-feeling getaway with excellent service and atmosphere, don't mind lighter drinks, and either prefer pools or are coming outside of sargassum season Check-in/lobby: 10/10 no complaints! Someone walked us from the car into the front desk. I know some people complained about the scent of the lobby, but i loved it. We got a free mini massage on the way in. All the people at the concierge are also great. We were approached by one person for a timeshare pitch our second morning, but we just needed to say no twice and she left. Service: 10/10! Service ranged from quick and professional to super warm and kind. I speak Spanish fairly well, my boyfriend doesn't speak any, and we did find the service is marginally better in Spanish. However, service is great regardless and everyone does speak english! Servers in the restaurants, pools, and beach are all very attentive and kind. I will say on our last night we went to siete for dinner and they were having some sort of circus performance and the service was a little slower and they also sat us at a table with a stained tablecloth, but i think the circus show in the restaurant was a last minute arrangement due to rain outside so I didn't think too hard about it. There are vendor nights and people offering massages occasionally, but neither are too pushy, you just have to politely say "no thank you" and walk past. Room: 9/10 we personally loved the room! We had the cheapest room possible (garden view king size) and were pleased with the size. The shower is huge and our balcony still had a partial view of the beach. There were thoughtful additions like a reed diffuser, incense, and a little zen sand kit. It felt very luxurious. One thing to note is that the outlets by the bed are a little loose so bigger plugs will not stay in. The toilet is also small qnd slightly awkward to sit in if you're tall like us. The minibar is stocked with juice, soft drinks, and beer. We ended up leaving a note with room service asking for more water, toothpaste, and drinks that weren't beer with a tip on our pillow. The toothpaste and drinks weren't given to us (there was toothpaste available at the gift shop so we just got that instead) but they gave us SO MUCH WATER for the rest of our stay. Cleaning service came mostly once a day for us- some days were slightly better than others in terms of cleaning (some days they didn't replace our cups and things) but it was solid overall and didn't interfere with our day. Room service was great too! Food: 8.5/10, we genuinely enjoyed most restaurants we went to. All restaurants are first come first served, unless you're aqua club (which we were not lol). The only place we really encountered a wait at was Hidden Garden. We came in expecting decent food and were pleasantly surprised! Nothing that I would consider Michelin-star quality but everything was tasty. MB probably has the most elevated "fine dining" flavors- the habanero soup was tasty but nothing extraordinary imo, but the veal cheek was sooo good, tender, flavorful, perfectly executed. Sea corner was solid, seafood and citrus forward and good if you're on the beach and need lunch. Varenna was also solid italian food, nothing too special but we enjoyed the bolognese and the panna cotta. For breakfast we did siete's buffet every day and loved it, I acted like a menace and ate probably a pound of raw salmon sashimi every morning LOL. Smoothie guy is also super friendly! Siete for dinner was really tasty. We ate outdoors at the grills a couple times and i honestly thought the paella and the tacos were the best meals I had at the resort. The tacos especially are SOOOO GOOD. Get the tacos al pastor with lots of pineapple! Drinks: 6/10 neither of us are big drinkers tbh, and neither of us came in wanting to get super drunk. Drinks are tasty and sweet, but i DO think especially the frozen cocktails are watered down. I find that the drinks in the restaurants are stronger than the drinks at the bar. Theres also nothing stopping us from asking for shots and pouring them in our drinks lol, but we honestly didn't mind as we didnt really want to get drunk anyway. They served their purpose for us but may be a deterrent for others. I will say we had one singular drink at egos bar before leaving and the pina colada was so strong i was lowkey drunk in the airport LOL. Maybe go to egos? Spa: 7/10. I booked a zen facial with some resort credit, which comes with hydrotherapy. The hydrotherapy area is definitely smaller and not as modern as some other places (even some cruises I've been on offered larger hydrotherapy sections). I also had a staff member cycle me through the hydrotherapy, and she was super sweet! I do wish I was able to enjoy whichever sections I preferred instead of a programmed circuit, but maybe that's just how it works. The facial was very relaxing and my skin felt great afterward! The prices without credits are very high though and I don't think I would pay full price when places like Los Colibries exist (see below!), but nothing was wrong with the facility itself. Pools: 9/10. We prefer the beaches but the pools were cleaned, expansive, and beautiful! We loved the pool that directly faces the ocean. The chair game IS brutal at the pools because all the cabanas and daybeds are reservation only iirc. If we were at the pool we usually got there around 10ish and we usually could find exactly 2 chairs for us but it definitely was slim pickings. Beach: 7/10. We came during sargassum season so we were absolutely expecting sargassum in the water. The first days we were there there was some but not too much and the water was perfectly swimmable if you don't mind some seaweed, but in the last days it became unpleasant to swim in the ocean so we stayed in the pools. We did notice that the sargassum cleanup at Live Aqua wasn't as good as the resorts right next to us (one of the Rius and i think a hyatt or a westin??) As their coasts had little to no sargassum and we saw cleanup happening on their beaches throughout the mornings. The beaches at Live Aqua had tractors that combed over the sand but weirdly never actually picked up the sargassum, and it just slowly piled up day by day. The beach outside of that is SUPER clean and beautiful! Beautiful turquoise water and white sand. Yeah, there's peddlers walking up and down but there's honestly not that many and you just need to say no. The uncovered beds are free use on the beach unlike the pool. The waves are definitely strong and there were red flags up most days, but if you're a strong swimmer you'll be fine! BOOKING THROUGH COSTCO/BDXperience Costco itself was really easy to work with! No complaints with costco. The big problem i had that dampened our visit was with transportation through BDxperience, which costco uses for transportation. My boyfriend and I arrived in different terminals and my boyfriend's flight was delayed, which messed up our pickup time. According to him he tried to call BD, didn't speak Spanish, got laughed at, and got hung up on. I ended up talking to the BD agents at my gate in spanish, and they were super nice and helpful and took me to where he was for free. They also gave me a sheet of paper with my confirmation info and a QR code that i could use to schedule our ride back without needing to talk to anyone on the phone or speak to a representative. It helps to speak spanish, they were way nicer to me than the other tourists who didnt (and my boyfriend too apparently). From there, our drive to the resort was perfect. Driver was SUPER nice and gave us tons of recommendations and information. When we came back to the airport, i asked whether it was possible to take me to a different terminal again. Guy said yes, for an extra fee, but refused to tell me how much and started driving. He dropped me off first, i tipped him extra for his time, and then he demanded $35 extra 😭 i was stupid, so i ended up givjng him the remainder to make $35 and left. (Yes, i was very well aware there's a free shuttle between terminals, and i now know i was lokely scammed, but i saw spotty reviews of the shuttle when I looked and BD didn't pick us up that much sooner than our departures, so we were short on time and i panicked lol. Don't be like me!) I saw similarly poor reviews on google. If you're booking through costco be careful booking transportation with them! Or, if your party is arriving at different parts of the airport, figure out each party's transportation individually and don't rely on them to help you out for anything other than exactly what was booked. OUR EXCURSIONS: Isla mujeres: we loved isla mujeres! Probably our favorite excursion. We sat at playa norte for most of the afternoon, got marquesitas and tacos from down the street and ate them at the beach. The sunset is GORGEOUS!! The girl at the tour desk tried to sell us a catamaran trip but talking to literally everyone here and the first nice BD driver they felt it was better to just take the ferry and enjoy the day there on our own so we bought tickets for Xcaret Xailing from her instead. It's super easy to get to the port by uber and the ferry is nice! Check the ferry schedule online though and not on the brochure, because the tour desk gave us an outdated brochure and we ended up needing to wait 1.5 hours at the port for the next ferry. Los Colibries: a spa located about 40ish minutes southwest of cancun in the jungle. They can arrange transportation through their private driver for an additional charge. We did the 2.5 hour experience with a mud mask, milk bath+ head and shoulder massage, and then a 1.5 hour massage followed by fresh fruit and hibiscus tea, all out in the jungle surrounded by sounds of water, birds, and occasional monkeys. even with transportation to and from the resort and tip the entire thing came out to around $150/person. Soooo relaxing and beautiful, an amazing experience that we highly recommend over paying like 500+ for the same thing in the resort minus the beautiful environment. I did get eaten alive by mosquitos though lol. Xcaret Xichen Itza: we're really glad we did this experience as first timers to mexico and had fun, but we would not do it again. We were told the day of that chichen itza was closed due to vendor protests, and so we went to the Ek Balam ruins instead. The trip took like 13-14 hours because of heavy traffic on the way back. Guides are great! They were really really helpful and got me meds when i got the worst migraine of my life alongside heat exhaustion. The cenote is gorgeous, the restaurant we went to was solid, and valladolid is a really cute town! I wish we had more time at the cenote and at valladolid. We only really had like 40min in the water and like 30min in valladolid after lunch. We loved la jaguara in valladolid for souvenirs- all are made in Yucatan, the guy who runs the shop is so kind and can tell you about where each piece was made, the prices are reasonable, and I literally saw a woman come in to give her crafts to the store owner. For us it was a good starter excursion, but we'd probably DIY it next time. TIPS FOR BEGINNERS: -if you have the time please consider picking up some basic spanish! Everyone in the resort is nice regardless but multiple told me that they appreciate me speaking spanish anyway, and it definitely helps outside the resorts. -when you make it to arrivals, you'll pick up any luggage you have and then potentially pass by a police+dog before proceeding past a glass door- this is the shark tank! Your transportation is not inside! Do not make eye contact with anyone until you are fully outside and see your guy waving the transportation company card you're using. I mean mugged my way out and nobody talked to me lol. -we both paid the visitax online but nobody checked it. Ymmv -if you get approached by someone offering you discounted excursion packages or spa packages just politely say you're not interested!! -if a souvenirs vendor has the exact same items as the other vendors, chances are they are not handmade and they are mass produced! Nothing wrong with mass produced souvenirs, but don't be persuaded by the tour guides saying they're "real artisanal crafts" if the "real artisanal crafts" somehow look exactly the same as the other crafts in the other 200 stalls lol -on tipping: i don't think we're the most generous tippers to exist but it genuinely is greatly appreciated by the resort staff! We did $1-2 for each round of drinks or meal, $2 for staff members/concierge who helped us confirm reservations or set up logistic things, $5-10 dollars for transportation (except the guy who made me pay him $35, to whom i paid and my boyfriend did not tip), and between $10-20 for spas and tour guides. Noticed a hummingbird nested in my lemon tree, i've never had them nest here before so I wanted to be nice and build my first DIY bird bath for mama bird and her soon to be nestlings. After everything cured and was safe to use mama birds first nestling hatched as I was bringing out their bath! Perfect timing and a really cool first time experience. My aunt told me the balloon arch I spent six hours assembling looked like "something from a dollar store" and I snapped and told her to plan her own damn parties from now on. I didn't even know I was planning this baby shower until my mom texted me "Aunt Linda is SO grateful you offered to do Melissa's shower, she's been stressed about finding someone!" I called her immediately. I never offered anything. My mom said she "knew I wouldn't mind" because I'm "so creative" and Melissa is family. She already told everyone I was doing it. The shower was in three weeks. I should've said no right then. But my mom does this guilt thing where she sighs really heavy and says "I just thought you'd want to help family" and I fold like an idiot every single time. So I planned the whole thing. Melissa wanted a woodland theme with specific colors (sage green, cream, and rose gold). I made a Pinterest board, ordered custom invitations, rented chairs and tables, bought all the decorations, planned games, ordered a cake from an actual bakery, put together favors. I took two days off work. The final cost was $2,100 and I paid for ALL of it because my mom said "we'll figure out reimbursement after." The morning of the shower I got there at 7am to set everything up. The balloon arch alone took me six hours because I've never made one before and kept having to watch YouTube tutorials. My hands were covered in glue burns from the hot glue gun. I made a dessert table, set up a gift station, hung tissue paper flowers I spent four nights making. It looked beautiful. I still remember 16 years ago. On my way home from work my girlfriend (now wife who is a whole human being in her own right) called me asking me to not be upset. Apparently, when she walked into our apartment lobby there you were. A small kitten that had somehow made her way into our locked building (for the record I still don’t believe that). I had never had a cat and never liked or wanted cats. There I was though, late at night running to the grocery store to get food, litter, and toys. I said we’ll keep you for a few days while I put up lost flyers our around apartment building- because I did not want a cat. By the next day though, I knew you where you wanted to be and we were yours. Those flyers never went up. You were a crazy lady from the get. We used to run through the apartment chasing each other. I’d run into a room and close the door, you’d wait outside until I flung it open then you’d jump straight up in the air and the chase was back on. Unless we were cooking then you not so patiently waited demanding your share. The squirrels we were feeding on the balcony never failed to entertain and frustrate you in equal degree. On to our next place and we were going out of town. My girlfriend (now wife who is a whole human being in her own right) was convinced that you needed a sibling. I was not convinced. Nevertheless, you were excited to have another cat. I think. You pretty much beat the hell out of him until he got bigger. You never met a bath time from him you didn’t like though. I also didn’t know you had a stubby tail till I met your brother but I think it fit you perfectly. Fast forward a few years and you (not so) patiently endured a cross country move in an old Cavalier with your brother. Then, probably to your chagrin you ended up with two more brothers who had shown up randomly like yourself (which I still don’t believe). You may not have welcomed them with open arms but you tolerated them and let them know who was boss. Our next place saw you bestowed the title of Grey Lady of East 39th. I don’t even know what that means but it fit perfectly. You definitely let everyone know who got first dibs on the cage we set up on our balcony at our next place. You’d watch bird TV and nap all day outside in the cage if we’d let you. Not that we had a choice, you’d grouch something fierce if we tried to bring you in before you were ready. Remember the first day in our house your mother and I frantically searching for you for an hour? Only to find you chilling in the fireplace. You were a different color for a week. You knew that scratching on my nightstand would wake me up so I’d move over and give you the warm spot. You’d piledrive your feet into my bladder because you knew I’d get up and give you breakfast. If I didn’t shave you’d love giving me a bath at 5am, purring the whole time. You loved being cheeky knowing I couldn’t sleep. Your weird little croak you’d yell when you were carrying your “treasures” from room to room. Whenever I wanted a little ice cream after dinner you always had to have the first spoonful. So many different stories and amusing tales I could tell about you. They could never come close to capturing who you are and how much you mean to us. I wish I could save your smell, I’m going to miss burying my nose in your shoulder blades and breathing deep. We had our big scare a year and a half ago. I suppose that’s not including the multiple UTIs and that $1,000 vet bill because it turned out you were constipated and needed an enema. I know it was embarrassing for everyone involved but you handled it, like everything else, like a Queen. After innumerable visits to the vet, the internist, and the oncologists it turned out you had cancer. And not a “normal” cancer. A weird type that doesn’t typically happen in the nose. Your mom and I decided to go “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead”. A feeding tube for months, multiple medications, radiation treatments. Whatever we could do, whatever we could pay to give you more time with us, we would do. We were so worried about you we couldn’t eat, couldn’t enjoy time off, everything was focused on making you better. We were so lucky that the fates smiled on us. Everything worked out well and we had another year and a half with you. You were like a new kitten, meowing all the time, bringing us “presents”, and being a crazy lady running around all the time. All the stress and money was worth it. I wouldn’t trade anything in this world for the extra time we had with you. Now though comes the twilight. The cancer is back and we can tell you’re too tired to fight it. We would go through hell again for you, you know this. We have, all three of us, suffered and come out the other end. Unfortunately, the end had another end hidden behind it. I will forever be grateful for the time you allowed us to have with you. It hurts my heart that you won’t be here when the new ki grass beds grow. It hurts my heart that you won't be here to squash my bladder or wake me up early in the morning. They say don’t go gently into that good night. I don’t agree. You deserve it. You’ve lived a full life and brought so much love to us. TL;DR - Trump is using exorbitant tariffs to bankrupt as much of the American economy as possible so that his billionaire buddies can scoop it all up at fire sale prices using 1%-2% interest rate loans. These headlines point to a very real problem brewing with the astronomical tariffs on China. The 145%-245% tariffs on Chinese goods are driving most businesses in the U.S. to cancel orders from China and existing Chinese freight inbound to the U.S. is at severe risk of being abandoned. Instead of causing hyperinflation, U.S. importers are smart enough to realize the American consumer won't pay $35 for one bath towel that used to cost $9.99 so they're just pulling the plug on importing China goods altogether. Let's look at what this means from the retail sector's perspective. It's no secret most goods sold in U.S. retail stores are Made in China. If there is a complete stoppage of trade between the U.S. and China because of these tariffs, then in just a few months there will be nothing left to buy. If the store shelves are mostly empty at U.S. retailers, then retailers have no products to sell. There is currently no alternative place to purchase the goods we import from China. Domestic production is years away. No products to sell means zero revenue. Zero revenue means certain bankruptcy. Bankruptcy means mass layoffs. Mass layoffs in retail cascades into other industries as people no longer have a source of income. Companies in other sectors not relying on Chinese imports will have problems staying afloat. Also mortgage defaults will rise leading to more foreclosures on homes. So who benefits from this? Obviously Trump and his billionaire friends do. Causing a mass shortage of goods from China is going to bankrupt a lot of companies. Companies that then can be bought up for pennies on the dollar by the billionaires. And how are they going to fund these acquisitions? Simple. Fire Jerome Powell, lower interest rates to zero percent, then buy up everything using 1%-2% interest rate loans against their assets. Why do you think Trump put a 90-day pause in for his "Liberation Day" tariffs? To give his billionaire friends exit liquidity so they can preserve capital that then can be borrowed against once sh*t really hits the fan. The Liberation Day tariffs were never about bringing manufacturing back to the U.S., and sky-high tariffs against China is literally bringing all trade with China to a halt. Again who benefits? Not you or I. We just won't have anything to purchase at the stores anymore for God knows how long. It's the billionaires who benefit the most from this, not anyone else. Of course Trump is the perfect person to do all of this. Because nobody knows more about bankrupting businesses than him. Guys, I bought a 4 month old blue- crowned conure yesterday from a pet store in birds market sharjah. The beautiful baby however has a weird smell. My other conure 2year old pineapple however doesn’t have any smell, and infact I love sniffing him. Could you please give me advice on how to get rid of the smell? I have the baby bird 2 baths already. Also clarifying what is causing the smell would be helpful. Today, we have u/WaneLietoc talking Senyawa's Alkisah. February 19th, 2021 - Phantom Limb Listen: Spotify Apple Music Bandcamp Background by u/WaneLietoc: Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi have been making music since 2010, when the multilingual vocalist and farming-tool instrument maker, respectively, first jammed together at Wukir’s No Fun Klub show that same year. The result led to the recording of the Senyawa EP, released through the Yogyakarta, Indonesia based Yes No Wave record label. “We didn’t intend it to be a full-time band, but it took off,” Shabara told Tone Glow in an interview this year. “We became Senyawa because one of our tours in Australia had that as our name on a poster and we said, “Okay, that’s our name.””. Talking to The Quietus in 2015 Rully described the meaning of Senyawa to be “when two or more different elements combine and create something new... Senyawa is all about the relationship between man and nature.” Since then, Rully and Wukir have held steadfast to their original vision (taken from the Yes No Wave release’s Bandcamp page): Embod[ying] the aural elements of traditional Indonesian music whilst exploring the framework of experimental music practice. Their sound is comprised of Rully Shabara’s deft extended vocal techniques punctuating the frenetic sounds of instrument builder, Wukir Suryadi’s modern-primitive instrumentation. Over their decade of half a dozen albums, the project has been as much an exploration of Shabara’s voice matched to the richness of Wukir’s intensive tinkering with sound and acoustics. Taken from NME: ​​In 2014, the duo released their proper full-length debut, ‘Acaraki’. The title, which refers to a person who assembles the ingredients for the traditional Indonesian medicine jamu, reflects the duo’s attempt to “formulate the sound of Senyawa”, Rully explains. The attempt pays off, as reflected in the title of the second album: ‘Menjadi’ (‘succeed’). The third album ‘Brønshøj (Puncak)’, or ‘peak’, reflects the feeling that they’d reached the summit of their improvisatory musical practice. Spanning across the duo’s home of Indonesian, well into Europe, through the Middle East, and even including two North American labels, their call garnered over over 44 labels. This resulted in 44 unique releases of Senyawa--complete with different formats, art, and remixes. It also has resulted in this album of the year write up you are looking at currently! Writeup by u/WaneLietoc: Senyawa win the award for “Best Distillation of the Ongoing Refinement of the Decline” I’d like to take a moment and award Alkisah the title of “Best Distillation of The Ongoing Refinement of the Decline”; it sounds snappier than “Album of the Year”, let’s be honest. If you’d care for me to elaborate then you’ll have to allow me to ramble. On January 7th, I found myself on a Discord call with a chap I've kept a steady friendship with over the past four years. While I was trimming bud, we were both discussing the abject horror of The Day Before and our own fears of what was to follow. I took a bit of solace in the fact that they stated “I don’t intend to leave the country, Lietoc”. They still haven’t left, but I found myself thinking about that moment of collapse as I started to try and formulate words for a post on an album that functions as more of a reflection of my 2021 listening. This year has been eerily quiet for myself in the wake of Everything Happening Around Us. Usually I go on a morning walk in the park, I try to appreciate the greenery, the bird sounds, and the litany of squirrels; anything to make me think “well I’m here now and I’m breathing”. Yet, my quaint bubble all feels too dissonant with this reality, the one that is increasingly fraught with disintegration; for as much as my isolation is its own luxury, it is itself a catatonic state and I am almost always internally, eternally screaming. Music was a liferaft to try and desperately find a meaning to push forth. When I was listening to music from any year but 2021, it was for comfort. Maybe it is because of that I ended up spending so much time becoming a personal tape index; cataloging sounds for my own sake for a future I’ve yet to see. As time has gone by and I still consume tapes at a rate comparable to a Camel chain smoker, the salience dwindles. I have drifted and numbed in many moments. Still, I’ve also garnered a deeper, more salient sense of who I am and what I value as a listener. And to be honest, I’ve had a baller year of listening to music. I edged towards new golden dreams and went down in a hole with a heroin gospel, while finally cracking the bonafide boom bap badassery of Blowout Comb. There’s a litany of other experiences I could mention. Yet when I look back on 2021 as a year for music, I was listening with a symptomatic ear--one that had either reflective dysphoric void states, the fatigue of the endless scroll, or survival amidst a post-collapse. I hardly saw that reflected on Tier 1 Indie Labels (outside of a release by a mormon duo who does weed and a lady speaking poetry like GLADos). Thus, I went harder on a tear into esoteric corners that last year’s AOTY post hinted towards traveling. I glimpsed into the endless scroll of the horniest ECM inversions known to man; I balled to science fictive maverick pop; I self-actualized to an absolutely insane piece of ketamine n’ bass…as a treat. Not all music from this year was situated to this moment we lived in or handled this triad equitably. It was then that I remembered why Alkisah (Senyawa’s 8 song album bookended by two sub-90 second pieces) has sat cozily on a shelf in my garage since the end of February--arriving just as the coastal chill was finally beginning to recede and any month could and would produce a 90 degree day. The band’s sincere belief that “decentralization should be the future” (a tagline found throughout Alkisah’s press releases, covers, and interviews) was something that I felt rather strongly about, having become accustomed to blindly listening to dispatches from the global underground as much as driving to the border for $1 tape deals. Both experiences give you grounded, uncanny pockets of knowledge that make you ponder at the coolness of just how expansivethe world truly is . While I had never heard of this duo until the New York Times piece was run in mid-February (for which I wish you luck that you didn’t use your free article of the month to read this), I just had a feeling that immediately upon a first listen, this was truly a special one. As much as it reminded me of just how close we are to a tumultuous end, Alkisah also functioned as a skeleton key to what I was listening to. In lieu of operating as “the 2k21 listening bar” to compared albums, it invoked a litany of comparison points towards whatever tape box or genre dive I was currently imposing on myself. Naturally, that is pretty fucking admirable and sorta defines why I am a “music appreciator” who does this way too much. How One Wins This Award? (AKA what does it sound like?) Senyawa are outsiders that Western music listeners (myself included) have only started to truly acknowledge as a powerhouse force that deserves. Now I have heard a lot of music over the past two years that serve as touchstones: Gong Gong Gong and (America's no. 1 rock n’ roll force) 75 Dollar Bill are two similar duos warping musical traditions into post-genre, post boundary melting pots that Senyawa is attuned to as well (and early live 75 DB performances share a parallel to early Senyawa performances); there’s distortion characteristics that Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))) imparted on the duo during a 2018 collaboration that have moved their sound towards a drone metal mastery alongside ilk as far ranging from GROWING to My Heart is an Inverted Flame. Although none of these folks exactly embrace post-collapse aesthetics. For that though, you have to consider the essential bread n’ butter of Wukir’s “modern-primitive instrumentation” (such as the bamboo wukir that can make string melody and percussion at the same time) and Rukir’s vocal versatility (that ranges from throat singing to militant chants). Both strike me as a latter-day example of a band employing Einstürzende Neubauten-style militant freeform experiments that could exist at any time and place, outside of society. While the duo informed Vice in 2016 that they “tend to avoid explaining [their] music with a genre or specific category”, it does not sway my idea of the duo as alloy tinged industrialists. Industrial music is privy to and enamored by collapse. Just check in with America’s no. 1 punk act of the moment, Special Interest, if you need to confirm. However, Senyawa is not an electro-shocked dancey industrial group (but they would sound rather apt sharing a bill with Special Interest live at the state’s end imo). There are trance characteristics that they happen to tap into across Alkisah, but it’s often because Rully and Wukir trust themselves and their instruments with such a depth that they can improvise and balance each other to however they see fit. In the wake of hitting an improvisational peak with 2015’s Brønshøj (Puncak)’, (or ‘peak’), Rully practically unlocked the ability to straight up articulate and perform whole lyrical stories out of his mind. Alkisah does act as one, ”telling a story of a society who disbanded themselves from a collapsing civilization and regroup to build a new one for the future. However, that future may not be there because the impending doom is upon them. What comes after is all that matters.” Understanding the regional dialects and the story (outside of Google Translate or the synopsis they gave to Tone Glow that I’m using in lieu of favorite lyrics at the bottom) that conveys may grant you greater mileage with this material; it’s a clear-eyed parable of our current climate. However, I knew neither of those and still came away enamored by the way each composition enshrined the versatility of how this duo operates. On Alkisah I, a nine-minute droney morse-codian piece, Rully sets the state of affairs in full SOTTO VOICE MODE, while Wukir clanks about the carcass of a broken machine that stutters to life, letting out a real ripper of a solo in the process. It’s to the piece’s credit that it is immensely...fun; super charged, juggling many ideas while remaining fleet and bouncy. Industrial music can oftentimes botch the landing on actually being a fun listen. The cold hard techno beats and the monotone Euro-voice that define Wax Trax!’s back catalog, as well as Ministry’s overarching grip on how to incorporate metal, have left the genre pigeonholed. Yet, Senyawa really doesn’t seem to give a shit about either of these. Alkisah foregoes those spheres entirely. The following piece, Menuju Muara, starts with Wukir practically trying to start a lawnmower as the percussives hit a machine gun rapid rhythm and Rully’s multilayered vocals growl, snarl, and follow you through the ends of the EQ spectrum; in fact it’s a vocal technique that Side B’s Fasih takes to an echoed-out panopticonic realm (with Wukir doing what might as well be a nu-metal DJ breakdown) that I adore. This admiration hits a particular peak on Side A closer Istana. Here, distortion operates as a pulverizing and sublime droney weapon weapon, complete with a noisy digital bath and percussive clanks that Wukir rains down. All of it enshrines Rully’s vocals, yet again in FULL SOTTO MODE, towards their most ritualistic, contemplative realm. He yells into the void, summoning a real tangible impression of a cave-in; a moment I savored on amany frigid nights. However, distortion also fosters the inverse to this scenario on Side B opener Kabau. Under the spidery fingerpicking of Wukir’s bamboo-string instrument, distortion lurches in the shadows, imparting another shade of a queasy tension that comes with a thousand-yard stare. On both tracks, this is a careful equation, not usurping their maverick approach to regional folk--and just to be clear, these are folk songs at the end of the day that do exist acoustically. The way distortion is utilized never pins the duo’s sound to one of a studio; more that it is coming from in live post-collapse from the calcified woods around a bonfire (just like Istana’s music video!). These are still songs of the earth, following what Sujud set forth. That’s a powerful image that has never wavered in any listen, especially on Kiamat’s blistering drum-denouement of the end approaching. Sonically, your mileage might vary with the tracks I’ve overviewed, but I still think this release is doubly important when considering its ingenuity, boundless ound and emphasis on release. Decentralization Could Be the Future, if You’re Paying Attention October 1st, I saw Mdou Moctar, in what was perhaps the most joyous concert experience I’ve been in. I stood at the front on the left side, which featured a sitting couch alongside the entire ridge and a lotta old heads. My attention often wavered to the right side, with all the twentysomethings that were punchdrunk and eager. There was movement everywhere around me, but on the right there was a tantalizing amount of moshing elicited by Moctar’s majesty and energetic, unfathomable playing. I kept thinking just how huge of a win this was. Not a win for the venue, Mdou’s crackerjack band, or Matador’s in-house A&R, per se, but for Sahel Sounds and the bandcamp tape labels that fostered this cultural dissemination. Mdou Moctar was through Sahel Sound’s compillation Music from Saharan Phones a decade ago, which clued eager listeners into a world of music that was not being discussed in Western culture sites or booked in their spaces. Sahel Sounds enshrined a belief that with enough global ears and a belief in “doing it together”, music could be disseminated and transmuted more freely, and eventually maybe even end up in your own town. It had taken ten years to get to this point, but god damn making an in-road is an in-road. Long-time electronic music writer Simon Reynaldo made quite the succinct point in his paywalled First Floor newsletter, recently. He noted that often when non-western music, specifically in electronic fields, is being disseminated and given attention by Western outlets, it’s often because there’s industry connection: In recent years there’s been a visible effort to cover more electronic music happening outside of the usual London-New York-Berlin axis. It’s heartening to see (an admittedly limited amount of) coverage devoted to labels and collectives like Uganda’s Nyege Nyege and Shanghai’s SVBKVLT, but even then, human factors come into play—it’s rarely noted that both of those entities are headed up by expats from Europe and the UK, respectively. (Pro tip: if a scene, label, party or collective outside of Europe and North America is regularly getting attention from the dance music press, there’s a good chance that an expat with connections back home is involved.) That doesn’t invalidate the work they’re doing or the music they’re releasing, but it surely gives them an advantage when it comes to communicating with the wider music industry. Senyawa has garnered coverage from US/UK outlets, but they are not participants in that industry. Their connections have been built upon a global DIY sphere that they planned to leverage into a Ten Year Plan. It would have involved a world tour, crossing paths with the friends they’ve made along the way. Of course, that didn’t happen due to a pandemic. But that imperitus to connect and subvert Western models of distribution, access, and coverage…well naturally the lads had the release of the year. For a band that has rather limited distribution--not just in the US but around the world--Senyawa’s commitment to setting Alkisah free and disseminating it across 44 geographically dispersed labels is a pretty baller way to circumvent this process (it also begets us a DNTEL remix). For one thing, it brazenly opens one to consider just how much music is being made across the globe, and how one could take a release, and regionalize production on that scale to better serve a community. All the while, it still links small-curators and labels with each other. As Rully aptly noted in Tone Glow: “It is not about survival of the fittest. It’s survival of those who share. If we only care about people who can adapt and survive, what about the people who can’t? It’s all about sharing. The more we can share, the more we survive—more people will survive.” But there’s also another layer to this, a geopolitical one. This is the idea of sharing. The norm for distribution in the music industry is very Western. What we’re doing is different and it’s coming from a duo in Indonesia. The exploration of contemporary avant-garde music is usually done by scholars or by Western practitioners using influence from other cultures. They go to Indonesia, study about the traditional music there, and then come up with something, and then that becomes a great or new kind of music. There’s a danger in that because there’s always a sense of superiority and inferiority, that one is the subject and one is the object. What if it doesn’t have to be like that? What if Asia isn’t just about traditional music? What if we also have radical ideas? It’s very powerful if you think about it. We don’t have to go out there and study it or look for our influences because it’s us. Once again, I turn back to my earlier parallel to 75 Dollar Bill and Gong Gong Gong; both projects personalize vast musical contexts, never assuming that they are to be restricted to academia or kept from sharing. They are genuinely posing their music as boundaryless, category-defying conversations (a conversation that even Tashi Dorji’s Stateless calls to mind). I think these are admirable, deeply necessary goals that Senyawa happens to have tapped into. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if you have never heard of any of the labels that put this release out. Only two in North America (there was no South American or African-led release) even responded to the call: the New Jersey based Burning Ambulance (whose annual festival is a bonafide barn burner), who still have CDs in stock, and California based Katuktu Collective, who handled a one-and-done run of fifty tapes. I checked in with the proprietor of Katuktu Collective, Aaris (who I also kindly thank for sending me several delicious cassette releases) to ask for perspective on their local release and worldwide: I got involved by seeing their call for labels on twitter, I think someone else who tries to promote Asian acts here retweeted it. I loved Sujud at the time but didn’t follow or know anything about them. Just got in touch and said I could do a US tape run, and it ended up only being me and Burning Ambulance doing CDs for the N American versions. Haven’t really kept directly in touch with the other labels. The Indonesia ones all worked together for some things and there was a group of European ones that put on a showcase and some other stuff; so it’s fallen into a set of geographic cliques. I’ve done a number of label collabs, doing another one with Späti Palace again coming up. And yeah how Senyawa organized things (really well!) it’d be great to see them or someone else attempt something similar. I suppose even with this happening on a scale that America outlets seemed to take note of, this release made the smallest of dents in the states. Why didn’t more labels sign-on to support and would that have made a difference, or would it have reinforced Reynaldo’s paragraph? American Senyawa Appreciators are a rare species, and Global Senyawa Appreciators--that likely fall into geographic cliques as Mr. Katuktu Collective alludes to--are as well. We’re just music lovers at the end of the day that want to spread these sounds while digging (like moles!) through the history of music. Contemplating this release, I’m reminded of Chris Ott’s conclusions in the later entries in the sometimes available, sometimes nonexistent, very yelly, but genuinely apt, Shallow Rewards videos: very few people give a shit about exploring the history of music, trying to synthesize parallels they notice and are worth sharing. Bandcamp is a platform to explore and discover these things, but it's not “uncovering a bunch of Taylor Swifts [next big things]” for that reason (and whether or not the platform engages with more commercialized PR is something to watch over the next few years). The promise that Senyawa has cast through this sound and ethos still energizes me. Seriously, these folks then went and recorded an acoustic album and put it on their own streaming service app you have to download off their instagram. Their thinking? That digital streaming, while beneficial, reduces albums to algorithmic instant entertainment; “So in order to get a full experience, maybe a digital album should be an app probably? We’ll let’s experiment by making one then.” Their imperitus to tinker against the odds never fails to bring me a passionate grimace. It reminds me that the internet we lost, the one before commercialization turned to shit in the 2010s, is still down there. Even in the face of so much devastation to come, there is still time that it can and should be leveraged as a tool in this way. Maybe then we’ll create 21st century communities, regionally locked, yet self-sustaining; infinitely transmittable by digital spaces. Denouement There have to be a number of different ways one looks at an album like Senyawa’s Alkisah. For the pedant, is it towards the numerous languages invoked and instrumentations imagined and brought forth by the duo. For the genre purists, an opportunity to consider how cool things are when genre blurs. For the bandcamp dweller, it’s a chance to more deeply consider why the platform can and should foster these things. For me, well…it’s just all those things and emotions better spread forth than I could put into words. Because the “C” word has come up a handful of times in this post, I guess I will go ahead and express my idea of what a post-collapse should look like. It’s the image of Francois Truffaut’s Fahrenheit 451 movie, just more dry and barren, but still along those railroad tracks. The few of us who made it will be trading 20th and 21st century cultural memories, whether that’s books by memory or Jon Bois videos on why a team called the Seattle Mariners mattered. Some of us will have brought our crank-powered boomboxes. Hopefully, I’ll be there, lugging a giant Napa Valley rack by my side. I suppose I’ll be demonstrating the power of Alkisah, summoning an energy to build something out of the rubble. Favorite Lyrics: In lieu of favorite lyrics, I’d rather just Crosspost the following email sent to Tone Glow that is a description of songs from Alkisah: “Alkisah” itself can be translated to “Once Upon A Time” “Alkisah I” is basically a prologue to a story that is being told in the rest of the songs “Kekuasaan” = “Power” (as in dominion, control). The short lyrics translated: “What is the meaning of power when the end is at hand?” “Menuju Muara” = “Towards the Estuary.” Tells the story of people realizing the end is near decide to rush towards the estuary and build a better civilization to survive the apocalypse. “Istana” = “Palace.” The people in the estuary becomes just another ruler, and worse. “Kabau” = lyrics are written in Minang language of West Sumatera, translated as “Ox” or “Buffalo.” A collection of Minang old proverbs, a reminder of the old world that was left behind before the estuary, about its wisdoms and humility. “Fasih” = “Eloquent.” People revolt against the rulers of the estuary, who are eloquent in preaching about creating a better world but have created a worse one instead. The people have finally spoken their mind and rise up to kill them all. “Alkisah II” is a conclusion to the story. The regrets, the realization of all the destructions that have happened because of greed and hatred toward each other. But it is all too late. “Kiamat” = “Doomsday.” The doomsday is upon us. My kids are aged 14 m and 15 f. The other day my son asked if I could wash his favorite shirt for some event coming up, so I told him I would and to put it in the hamper. Later that day I found it just sitting on the floor so I didn't bother. Same thing with my daughter, she asked me to wash something (don't remember what) and she got the same response. Same thing happened with the piece of clothing on the floor instead of the hamper so I didn't bother Later in the evening they started bitching about the clothes they requested not being washed and I told them "all you had to do was put it in the hamper" to which my son said "yeah but it was near the hamper you can just pick it up" to which my daughter agreed. I didn't say anything more about the issue The next morning I went to the dollar store and bought some laundry detergent. When my kids came down for breakfast it was sitting on the table, and they asked what it was. I informed them that until they stop being entitled spoiled brats that they can wash their own clothes, but not with MY washing machine. I informed them they will be washing all THEIR clothes from now on in the bath tub with dollar store detergent until they start being respectful and I receive an apology for the remarks about picking up their crap near the hamper AND once the detergent runs out they have to use their own money to buy more but they're only allowed to buy it at the dollar store. Then came more whining and bitching It's been a week and they still haven't apologized and I'm saving time, money and water on only washing mine and my husband's clothes.
