Decided to save money and DIY’d my kitchen. (After and before)
What we wanted was essentially coming in way over budget. We wanted a kind of a mid century/ scandi inspired look. I’ve done a bit of DIY stuff before, so figured I’d give it a bash! The worktop was made to order. I reused some carcasses and got a few more to relocate the sink, but everything else I did myself. A lot of trial and error, recutting doors that I cut too small, messed up the floor tiles pretty bad so had to do it twice etc etc. Pretty stoked on how it came out. submitted by /u/j_fisher85 to r/kitchenremodel [link] [comments]

My DIY journey
Hi all. I thought I’d share the project I’ve been working on the past couple of years, my first house! House details; - Late 50s/early 60s end of terrace. - elderly couple owned it and looked like it hadn’t been updated since the 90s - lots of wallpaper over wallpaper and bodge jobs from over the years. We were due our child 3 months after moving in so it was a bit of a frenzy when we first moved in, which does mean some things were a rush job and will need reviewing at some point. I’ll rattle out a few of the projects below, and if you have any questions or feedback, I’d love to hear it. Everywhere - downlights. Every room was one or two ceiling fixtures, other than some randomly located downlights in the kitchen. So downlights in every room. Wallpaper - every room had at least 2 layers of wallpaper. Every wall stripped. I wanted to get it all plastered but funds wouldn’t cover it. I lots of filling and sanding (I did learn plastering during the process but only tackled certain jobs so far). Kitchen - other than the green, up close it was a real botch job. I totally ripped it out. Everything myself other than 1st fix plumbing. I wanted soldered copper, and did not have time to learn that haha! Living room - old back boiler stayed in until very recently. Ordered a custom radiator cover to hide it and knocked up an oak hearth area to match the floor. More wallpaper removal/painting/downlights. Quickstep laminate. Replaced radiators. One side of the room removed radiator and swapped for a tower rad, smashed out the window and replaced with patio doors. Hallway - flooring. Removed the old gas meter surround and had Cadent relocate outside, then filled in the gaps, did some plastering etc. - hid the consumer unit in a slightly nicer box. Bathroom - it was two rooms. Narrow toilet area, then the sink/bath area. Smashed the wall down, made two windows into one. Fitted new bathroom. Again, had a plumber in for first fix. Bedrooms - horrible artex ceilings I overboarded and tape and jointed. More wallpaper/downlights, new radiators. Garden - I didn’t do the slabbing here (and regret that massively, they ruined it and it took me ages to fix). Installed a pergola, new shed, tiled over the garage base and hid the ugly garage with some willow fencing. Installed a glass balustrade to stop daughter running off the edge. Plus some other less glamorous jobs. Proper loft hatch and ladder, boarded the loft. Boiler - finally had the 30+ year old boiler replaced. My plumber very helpfully said he should stick new 22mm up to the airing cupboard whilst I had the kitchen ripped out. Very good idea as it made the new combi a painless job 😁 A real learning curve, a few mistakes made along the way but I loved it! submitted by /u/XtianAudio to r/DIYUK [link] [comments]

I finally finished my DIY floor couch!
I only had very basic sewing skills before this. I knew how to use a sewing machine... but that was it! Then I kept seeing this couch that would be perfect for our home, and I kept telling myself, “How hard can it be?” I bought mattresses and shredded memory foam (for the pillows), and everything else is MADE BY ME! Not just a lot of fun, but I also saved a ton compared to the retail couch (I finally got the real numbers). Retail - 2,790€ (incl. shipping). My build ended up at 1,400€, but I bought high-end material. Always room for saving even more! Mattress covers: I measured the mattresses and drafted my own pattern with an overlap at the back. The bottom opening is filled with anti-slip fabric, and I added a hidden zipper along the long back edge so the covers are removable. 90-degree corner bolster: I cut two mirrored fabric pieces using the wave-shaped pattern I posted below. Each piece was first sewn into a tube using very loose basting stitches. Then I stitched the wavy seam together to create the 90-degree angle. After that, I sewed a zipper onto the basted seam to create a hidden zipper, and then removed the basting stitches. The zipper going around the corner was a bit fiddly, but definitely doable. Finally, I closed the front and back with two end caps. Inner pillows: These were made the same way as the outer bolsters, but without zippers. I left a small opening in one of the end caps, filled them with shredded memory foam, and closed them by hand. Straight bolsters: For those, I simply cut the fabric, basted it into a tube, inserted the zipper along the basted seam, removed the basting stitches, and then sewed on the end caps. I used an olive green wide-wale corduroy (about 2 wales per inch), and the inner pillows are just regular sturdy cotton. The frame to keep the bolsters from tipping over is made from iron pipes with elbow fittings. The mattresses measure 1m x 2m. IF YOU EVER TOUGHT OF DOING THIS YOURSELF? GO FOR IT! submitted by /u/AdCultural4499 to r/sewing [link] [comments]

DIY All Mirrored Half-Bathroom, Floor to Ceiling
Finally finished this and wanted to share with others who might appreciate. We have a tiny half-bathroom that needed fixed and reno’d. Inspired by Flight of the Navigator’s silvery spaceship, and Yayoi Kusama’s infinity mirrors, I wanted to make it feel as big as possible in there, with a vibe that suggested a big, starry future, perhaps with a multiverse. Not an artist, just a handyman w/ random skills. Thought this was gonna be easy. It wasn’t. But except for painting the door, it’s finally done! Key features: - all mirrors were hand-cut. Cutting mirrors is hard. I broke a lot learning. - floor tiles are not rated for walking. To make that work I cast the floor as solid epoxy ~1/4” thick. This ensured the floor was perfectly level and flat, to reduce risk of tiles having point loads that could crack them. - countertop is mirrored stainless, set over a thick coat of wood-filled epoxy with black to bond and level. It was previously cut glass pieces, but moisture quickly got to the wood butcherblock under and the swelling and warping caused all pieces to shatter. - LED lights are eclectic arrangement, because when I tried installing them in a more tidy professional manner the lighting didn’t look balanced. A motion activated sensor turns them and toilet seat on. - Toilet seat is cast epoxy with lights and wiring. People seem to either love it or hate it! submitted by /u/TheSolarJetMan to r/DIY [link] [comments]
