I’ve had my sidekick for over a year now (adopted as an adult) and we’re best buds. He’s your classic velcro chi with the biggest (and fragile) heart and we’re each other’s whole worlds! We go almost everywhere together, but I recently went on a trip for 10 days without him😭. It was the longest we’ve ever been apart. He stayed with a sitter who I thought would be a good fit, but I don’t think she gave him the attention and kinds of love he needed. When I picked him up he seemed really upset—not really happy to see me, just super confused and was panting, avoiding eye contact, and even tried to run back into the sitter’s apartment (even though I don’t think he made much of a bond with her). He settled back in once we were home and is doing ok at face value, but there’s moments where I feel like there’s still something off with him and I think I lost his trust. He stares at me and whines but doesn’t know what he wants, and when he gets in his feelings he channels it to fixation on wanting food/treats, which I think was his primary coping tool from his sitter. He has lower frustration tolerance and less focus—he gives up on his more challenging treat toys. We did a lotttt of work after I adopted him to build up his confidence and regulation skills so it’s heartbreaking to see him struggle like this and regress in his anxiety and forget how to settle and calm himself down. I’ve been back for 3 weeks now and I feel like there’s still just a little emotional wall there that comes up and that it’s taking a toll on him since he’s such an attached little guy. Obviously I’m so sorry to him and have promised him it’ll never happen again. But seriously, has anyone ever accidentally really betrayed their sensitive chi’s trust like this, and did you ever feel like you got it back? The first week I was showering with the curtain open, and now he peacefully naps in one spot when I’m gone. We have a wholeeee routine before I leave and basically official agreements on how we handle different kinds of being apart. I’m allowed to work sometimes crazy long hours, but whether I’m home early or late I don’t leave a second time (and if I do I owe him big time). I’m allowed to occasionally go out late night to bars/events/etc—I’ve gotten home as late as 5am—but when I’m back we party then snuggle and then the rest of the weekend are me-chi days where he goes in a backpack and comes everywhere I go. If I leave for multiple days, I DEFINITELY have to make up for it, but he tolerates it and doesn’t go tyrant mode as long as he gets to be treated like a poor sweetest lil angel baby who gets unlimited access to any pillows, blankets, laps, and attention and he doesn’t have to do any tricks or work for anything. He actually did well the last time he was with a sitter (shorter amount of time, but calm and settled in all pics/vids and bounced back quickly; she wasn’t available these dates). But that’s to say he trusts me to leave him with someone who will be obsessed with him and give him all of that until I’m back, but we never had a contingency plan for me betraying that and leaving him with no emotional anchor :( I don’t *blame* this sitter, she was very kind and made him homemade treats, took him on long walks, sent me daily updates…I left her a good review and tipped and am not complaining to her, etc. BUT I think she has experience with a narrow range of personalities and didn’t really understand him. She sent me a video one day of him crying jumping at her in the saddest way possible, and I got multiple videos of him desperately trying to get attention from her but her responding to it by running/teasing/trying to play when he actually was begging for her to sit still so he could nap next to her. He was clearly really confused and stressed by it all since that’s not something he wants or enjoys. I think he also had unfamiliar rules and expectations that were probably overwhelming. When I picked him up he was anxious and wound up but also just looked so so TIRED and the next couple days he was exhausted and just slept and had lots of dreams and didn’t want any enrichment. I’m planning on taking him with me next time I have to go somewhere for a long period. This wasn’t easy for me at any point. After I dropped him off I cried on the street and actually felt like I was dying. I very much forced myself to still go because I hadn’t seen family or long distance friends in a year. It was going to be really hard to take him because of airline restrictions for the area. The advice I’d give anyone else is to make sure you thoroughly communicate not just their food/meds/walks, but really what their lifestyle vibe is like and what their coping tools are. What does a normal day look like for your sitter? When they’re “home” what are they actually doing? Are they up and moving around, or chilling on the couch? Which does your dog need? For most people my chi is the “easiest” dog to care for because he just wants to nap next to you all day, but that’s not a match with everyone’s lifestyle. My pup has a for sure chicken allergy and seems to also be allergic to SOME sort of grain, regular puppy food gives him the runs even if it's chicken free. He's on grain free puppy food. Yes I know the risks but it's either that or a sick dog rn. I can't afford to get a nutritionist to make his food myself rn and need to probably wait til he's an adult anyway. It is most likely by process of elimination rice but i cannot do another food trial rn. chicken is diagnosed. the grain is not. he's on taste of the wild pacific stream(yes I know about WSAVA if you wanna play this game YOU find a grain and chicken free PUPPY recipe under that category, I LOOKED. Go ahead.) for at least til he needs off puppy food. He does get a homemade topper i make with various things to add extra nutrients for him. No meat but fish tho since he sometimes declines other meats depending on how it's cooked, fish he will eat no matter what. Does anyone have any recipes that don't use grains or chicken that are decent treats? Or any suggestions for chews? I (28M) live in an apartment complex and my neighbor (60s) has this super cute golden retriever. About 4 months ago she asked if I could walk him twice a week since she works late on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I said sure, I love dogs and needed the exercise anyway so win win. She offered to pay me $20 per walk which seemed fair. I already had some money set aside from Stаke but the extra cash was nice. Everything was great for like 6 weeks, she'd venmo me every Friday and the dog is the chillest ever. Then one Thursday I come back from the walk and she hands me a tupperware of homemade cookies instead of mentioning payment. I was like okay cool, thanks, figured she'd just pay me later. Next week, same thing but with banana bread. Still no payment. I finally brought it up super nicely like "hey just wanted to check, did you want to keep doing venmo or?" and she got all weird about it. Said she thought we had moved past the "transactional phase" of our friendship and that her baking was worth way more than $40 a week anyway because she uses organic ingredients. Since folks were interested in the follow up, here’s some pics from the Norweigan festival at a local “Sons of Norway” lodge here in the U.S. for your judging 😅 Thanks for your tips on what to buy! This is a very small event the group hosts once a year to open up the lodge to guests and sell imported Norweigan or other Scandinavian goods and homemade treats. “Lodges” in the U.S. are an interchangeable term both for a cultural group run by 2nd+ gen immigrants and expats, and the houses or buildings they’re run out of that are usually renovated with cultural flourishes. This one is a renovated house in a random neighborhood. There is no major Scandinavian population here but this is outside of Washington, DC, where there are expats and small pockets of ancestry from everywhere. Of course this is not going to be completely authentic because…this isn’t in Norway 😂 Yes, the almond cakes were there again but I didn’t get to ask anybody what they’re about since y’all said they’re not a thing in Norway! You learn something new everyday. I have a nine year old doing a kids market/fair and she has never done one before. She is selling homemade dog treats and the money she makes is going to go towards a sports trip that she was selected for overseas. The treats are circle and about the size of a silver dollar and just shy of 1/2-inch thick. She is also making dehydrated sweet potato fries and a few other things. Everything is in packs of 10. We are trying to help her figure out how much she should sell them for. I feel like $5 is already pushing the high end and my husband is saying $10. But being as how I am the one that buys our dog's treats (not him) and know what the prices of things are like and the fact that there are only ten treats in a vacuum sealed pack, I think that $10 is too high. He thinks that "it is a kids market/fair so people are going to anticipate paying more" and I think that it is the opposite and people are going to expect to get things for $5 and under somewhere where all of the booths are hosted by kids..... So she wanted me to ask dog owners how they feel and what better way to ask then to hit up the dog group? Congee (rice porridge) has kept me going through difficult times. It’s also what I cook for my dog, who has special dietary needs and can’t tolerate most commercial food. Dump 8 cups water (or stock if you have it) and 1 cup rice into a crockpot. (Stovetop, rice cooker, or hot plate all work—use a 4:1 water:rice ratio or more if you like it looser.) Cook until the rice starts to dissolve and it’s a thick but loose porridge. (~3–4 hours on HIGH in a crockpot; stovetop: simmer low, stir now and then.) Add any toppings/mix-ins you have. If using raw meat/veg, continue heating until fully cooked. 1 crockpot full should feed a family of 5 or more. I make one for my two dogs and it lasts all week in the fridge. This can be added to with things you can find at your local food bank. If you have them, they’re perfect in congee: Canned or fresh proteins proteins: tuna, chicken, salmon, sausages; canned beans or lentils Canned veggies/fruit (corn, peas, green beans, carrots; peaches/pears if you want a sweeter pudding like meal) Shelf-stable milk or powdered milk (makes it silky) Basic spices (salt, pepper, chili flakes), soy sauce, oil (a drizzle goes far) Green onion Here are some ideas to customize it: Egg-drop congee: swirl in a beaten egg; top with soy sauce and chili flakes. Tuna-corn: canned tuna + canned corn + black pepper. Peanut-ginger (if you have it): PB + a splash of soy sauce + grated ginger/garlic powder. Bean & greens: canned beans + any greens (frozen/canned), make sure to heat through. You can always split the pot, adding your toppings to one and the dogs add-ins to another. We have been posting on multiple sites/searching for the owner for 3 weeks now with no luck, she was likely abandoned. I got her DNA tested as I was kind of hoping she wasn't a full malinois, but results came back and she is a 100% Belgian Malinois (posting here because original post was here). I've always been aware of the breed's needs and I know how much time, energy, and discipline these dogs need to thrive and to be honest, I don't have that in me currently. I've been working nonstop being a small business owner and we are also trying to conceive. In these past 3 weeks alone, my physical health, mental sanity, and work has already been affected by having this pupper (my Oura ring scores are in the trash), and I'm reading that after the puppy stage it gets more exhausting. We take dog ownership very seriously so this pup has plenty of walks/play sessions/homemade treats/lick and snuffle mats, etc. My husband spends multiple sessions each day training her in different ways, with me reinforcing training as well. She got potty trained in 10 days, is doing well with numerous commands and her recall is impressive (or she's just really clingy). We got her evaluated by a professional trainer (whom we may look into hiring if needs must) and we take both dogs into work with us for the 4 days we are in the office. I would say we are just about scraping by making this unexpected pup work (but with no children and the dog only being ~4 months old). My mom friends say a belgian malinois and new parenthood don't mix and that I'll regret keeping the dog when those months of parenthood arrive. I agree that the early days will not be easy, but also believe that everything is temporary and dogs are trainable (and we'll have at least 9 months to train this pup before a baby arrives). I trained our current dog, a 6yo GSD, myself and it was a rough 1.5 years but she is now my #1 source of joy. I believe we could give this new pupper a great home, a great life, but at the risk of my sanity for a few years. My husband has always wanted a malinois and we're both leaning towards keeping this pup as I haven't been able to even think about dropping her off at the shelter without bursting into tears. Our older GSD is calm and can hang around the house all weekend without demanding anything, just existing happily with her introverted self. This malinois puppy could not be more opposite.... and I'm wondering how dumb am I to consider keeping this pup while preparing my life for new parenthood? Looking for advice or experience with similar situations (i.e. high-drive pup with first time parenthood + heavy workload). If your advice is to rehome, please share reputable rescues that don’t cage them (she clearly has crate trauma). A shelter drop-off isn’t an option I could handle. This beautiful boy is named Trux, after Derek Trucks. And while he's not a guitar virtuoso, he is the sweetest most lovable best boy mixed with a little mischief and a major food obsession. He has stolen multiple sticks of butter, loaves of bread, bagels- whatever has been within his reach (totally my fault). He is an endless source of unconditional love, laughter & pure joy. He has been my confident, cheering me up in the darkest of moments, my best friend. I personally rescued him & his sister (whom is my other heart & joy), 8 other siblings & Mom from a pretty bad part of town. Traveling through the area for work, I saw his Mom- skinny as a rail with big teats -eating from the garbage. That night, I decided the following day I was going to find her, take her in, care for her and find her a home as I've done so many times before. When you can do something good do it, right? So I brought a crate & planned the extraction with a work associate , who eagerly jumped in to help. Well imagine my surprise when looking for her, a wonderful local man & nearby business owner asked me what exactly I was looking high & low for. When I told him, he knew exactly where she was....holed up in an abandoned house WITH A LITTER OF 3-4 WEEK OLD PUPPIES right up the road!!!! This amazing human being jumped in the bed of my truck and directed me where to go. Together the 3 of us spent about 4 hot & crazy hours securing Mom, digging through piles of abandoned belongings & garbage to make sure we had every.single.puppy!! I came home with 11 dogs that night. I already had 3. To say it was crazy is an understatement. 2 of my wonderful neighbors, whom eventually wound up taking Mom and one of the pups, came over and together we washed, fed and put to bed all 11. Mom was relived & content. My current fur pack was wonderful, watchful & helpful. They've been through this before so they knew the drill. Just not for this many. Fast forward 13 years. He has been through the loss of the original 3 & countless other events. He's truly been my unconditional friend, a goofball and oh so sweet. A good & loyal boy. Since we got his diagnosis of an aggressive tumor on either side of his ribs/lung. (((Fuck cancer!))) . We could have opted for surgery and chemo- but it didn't seem fair. He's 13. Had a good long life of love, hikes and good homemade food. It's been a good life. We should all be so loved. He's had almost 2 weeks of steaks, frozen yogurt, treats and lots of love. It's time. He's tired. Tomorrow between 8:45 - 9:45 am, in less than 12 hours, I have to say goodbye. He will pass at home, surrounded by the people who adore him- all of them. That's how special he is. I am not ready. Can you ever be? I hope there really is a heaven because they deserve that. Trux run free, know we love you and you've been such a good boy. You will take a piece of us with you. My friend gave me a cookie cutter of my dog's actual face! So of course I had to make him some treats with it. Recipe is loosely based on a couple I've found online - mashed fruit with cream cheese and wholemeal flour. Tagged "Cat" because you can't choose both. So both of my pets are overweight but not obese. I didn't realize until the vet directly told me. I changed their food and am exercising them as much as they'll allow, but now I have a problem with snacks. I live in a country that doesn't have the greatest selection when it come to things for pets. The only snacks fit for overweight dogs is the hills one, which is medical. I don't mind making them snacks myself though. Does anyone have any suggestions for recipes? Edit to add some info because I see a lot of things repeating that are less relevant to us: They are NOT badly overweight. About two kilos on the dog and 700g on the cat, both of whom are quite large. They're on a very mild diet, as per the vet, who is also the on who told me to look into healthy snacks. I do not give them snacks daily, idk how I made it seem like that. I give them treats like once or twice a year regardless of losing weight. This is just to treat them then. I will gladly listen to any recommendations, but please don't give me vet advice. You've never checked my pets and know nothing of them. My vet is great, he's been taking care of all my family's pets for 20 years. I trust him when he says that they are in no danger, just a bit chunky. I will try to answer everything as fast as possible but I am at work so sorry in advance if I don't get to you 🙏 Edit2: This post is going down sometime today. F27 I had my first baby six days ago. My birth went well but I am still recovering, in quite a bit of pain, and have been very sensitive emotionally since giving birth. My husband (M27) & I told our families that we’d likely have no visitors for the first 1-2 weeks, just to set expectations. But privately the two of us decided that we would play it by ear and see how we felt. ​ Our second day home with our baby was really rough on me and all I wanted was my mom to comfort and help me, so husband and I decided to call my mom and have her come over. She was such a major help, both emotionally and with the baby, so we had her come by every other day since. She went above and beyond to help us. Also my bestie & her husband live down the street and have been dropping off meals/treats & walking our dog for us, but I don’t consider that visiting as much as favors/errands. ​ MIL found out about my mom’s visits and was very upset, so we decided to have her over for a brief visit, day six postpartum. She said they’d bring food & arrived around dinner time. I have Celiac disease so I cannot eat gluten. MIL brought homemade lasagna, pasta salad, muffins, and two types of cookies, all full-gluten, and explained to me that she was sorry but she had limited notice and only had time to make my husband’s favorites. ​ I immediately started crying and my husband thanked his mom but took me to the other room and told me he’d take care of it and ordered us delivery on the spot. I composed myself, introduced MIL/FIL to baby, and then MIL made another comment about how she wished she could’ve brought food for me but it was just so time consuming and burdensome to make things gluten-free. I snapped and told her she was rude and told her I was angry. ​ Toward the end of the visit, my bff’s husband knocked on the door to come walk our dog and to my surprise brought us a homemade gluten-free tiramisu. I started crying (again) and thanked him profusely, and he told us it was no problem and “surprisingly easy to make.” ​ MIL was pissed because she realized that they’d been coming by and started complaining about how wrong this all was, because she had to wait six days to see the baby and was “faced with [my] anger.” My husband took my baby from her and FIL snapped at her to drop it. They stayed and chatted for a short while, and when bestie’s husband came back to drop our dog off, I sent him home with one of the batches of cookies MIL brought which upset MIL. ​ MIL has been texting/calling and trying to rally people against me since. My husband has my back and even went the next day to drop off almost all the rest of the gluten food to our friends and he told me to block MIL’s number if she kept harassing me. ​ I don’t really feel like I was the asshole but I’m also extremely emotional and sensitive to everything right now and am not sure I’m reacting to things in general reasonably at this time. With the rising costs of literally everything, shortly after we got our dog I decided I was going to make all of her treats myself. I use nearly the same recipe every time - ground oats, peanut butter (safe for dogs don’t worry), and either banana or applesauce. This is so silly compared to most posts here but sometimes I wonder if she’s missing out? She doesn’t get many treats, and they’re all training size and very low calorie. She gets treats on walks and when she goes to other peoples houses, but that’s about it. She also gets a frozen pumpkin treat every night, and once or twice a week I’ll make her a lick mat with peanut butter and bananas or applesauce. Is she missing out? Should I branch out and make different flavored treats? Or do you think she’s happy enough getting what I already make her?
