People dress poorly for special occasions and I'm sick of it.
Three years ago a family friend died. He was a Korean veteran, post office worker, father, grandfather and loyal husband. He spent his life in service to his country and his family. People showed up wearing flip flops to his service. Men wearing Hawaiian shirts or untucked polos. Last weekend I went to a wedding. There was a man wearing a backwards baseball cap and an untucked shirt. Men wearing an all black outfit with pet hair, no jacket or belt, running shoes, hair and beards looking like absolute ass like they just woke up. Meanwhile, the bride and groom look incredible. Men, please buy a suit and get it tailored and keep it for special occasions. Buy one from a thrift store if you can't afford something new. Show some respect to the family during times of celebration or grieving. Show that you care, please. submitted by /u/bored_as_fuck_dad to r/Vent [link] [comments]

I made an entirely wood marquetry dress inspired by this year's Met Gala theme
I've had this marquetry dress idea cooking in my head for a while, but when I saw "Fashion is Art" as the Met Gala theme this year I did like a cartoon-style arm sweep across my workbench to clear it and immediately got working on this (sorry, other projects!). I scored an absolute jackpot of beautiful hardwood veneers at a local garage sale a couple weeks ago from a retiring Luthier, including the the perfling I used as seams on the corset. The woods I was able to ID are: it's predominantly birdseye maple, and the inlays are mahogany, padouk, pearwood, yew, etimoe, purpleheart, and black walnut. I struggled to ID the dark ribboned veneer I used on the bodice-- my top guesses are monkeypod or a deeply ribboned mahogany (it's hard to see from the photos but it has that mahogany sheen to it). But if anyone knows, I would LOVE to hear it! The marquetry was done with a laser cutter (sue me! I think they would have used laser cutters in the baroque era if they'd had them!) which was also an interesting process to develop to work around the kerf- which varies as each wood species burns slightly differently. I made a couple non-marquetry prototypes in order to develop a pattern that both fit my body and worked in wood. The process I developed was pretty similar to building a stitch and glue boat, I backed each veneer in thin cotton fabric and wood glue, then laser cut them into shape, and assembled them by taping them into place on the outside and tacking them with CA glue and accelerator on the inside. Once it was CA'd together, I fiberglassed the outside (I will admit, I regret this a little bit since I wish it was wood texture not glass texture, but I was just too nervous about the strength of the piece without the glass). The skirt was a massive massive pain in the bum, I was really battling the rippling that birdseye maple veneer loves to do a lot. I almost cried when the ballerina model (last few photos) put it on- she brought the vision to life in a way I've never experienced as a maker. It gave me an entirely new perspective on the joy of fashion as art. (artist creds for those ballet photos-- model: toiyalea and photog: photos_by_silamith) If you're interested, there's a full build video here. submitted by /u/flyingrobotgirl to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

Graduation dress
Hi everyone! I’m trying to decide between these two dresses for my graduation/prom ceremony and I genuinely can’t choose anymore 😅 The white dress is one size smaller, so it looks a bit more fitted on me, which I actually like. At the same time, I’m not completely sure about the dress itself… although the white color gives me this soft, elegant, almost “pure” feeling that I really love. On the other hand, almost everyone around me says the pink dress suits me better and makes me look more radiant. Honestly, I like both dresses almost equally, so now I’m completely torn. In my country there isn’t really a tradition that graduation dresses have to be white, so the color itself doesn’t matter. I’d just really love to hear some unbiased opinions about which color suits me more overall. Also sorry for the messy background, it was just a quick try-on session 😭 submitted by /u/29hermionna to r/fashion [link] [comments]

Re: Revisiting the blazer question
I like a blazer with almost anything, dresses, pants, jeans. Usually it is a more polished look than a denim jacket. Of course there is nothing wrong with a denim jacket it is just not something I usually wear. I do not care for blazers with short sleeves, but that is just me. A blazer can be very casual, especially if it is a knit.

Thrifted wedding dress try on
I promised an update on my thrifted wedding dress,so here it is, my first try on 🤍 It still needs quite a bit of work: it doesn’t fully close in the back yet, the straps need to be properly fitted to my shoulders to stay up, and there are a few repairs to take care of. I’m also in the middle of a weight loss journey, so we’re not quite at the final vision just yet. The photos honestly don’t do it justice, the lighting in my living room isn’t the best, but I’ll share another update after it’s been fitted by the seamstress since she has better light, and then of course the final look at the church ✨ It’s incredibly sparkly… and surprisingly heavy! I’m planning to wear my hair up with a tiara, which I think will really complete the look. I'll keep the rest simple as folks suggested. A lot of people have asked if I’ll keep the dress afterward, and after thinking about it, I’ve decided I’d love for another bride to have the chance to feel like a princess in it too, despite the fact I am sentimental. Still can’t believe I found this for $100 and that I get to make it fully mine! If you want to see more, check out my previous post for photos of the dress off. I’ve also included some shots of the train (which is way too long for my living room so you can't fully see lol) and some closeup details. I feel so lucky, and I’m really excited to take you along on the journey to the final result 💫 submitted by /u/ImpressLeading4229 to r/myweddingdress [link] [comments]

Thrifted my dream dress after months of searching
I think I found my wedding dress… and I genuinely wasn’t expecting this 😭 It’s thrifted/secondhand, no brand tag, and I paid about $100 including shipping. Something about the structure caught my eye and when it arrived I realised how much detail there actually is. It’s a full ballgown with a built-in corset (proper boning and structure), and it’s very heavy (around 8 kg). The entire dress, including the train, is covered in dense beadwork/sequins and embroidery. The patterns has symmetry through the bodice and it continues down into the skirt panels and train. The skirt has that volume without needing a huge petticoat. It honestly feels way more like a custom gown than anything I expected to find secondhand. However I’m rather clueless. The moment I saw it, I just had that “this is the one” feeling, which I didn’t think would happen for me. I’ve been looking for months even in bridal shops and nothing felt right or was wildly out of budget. I still need to try it on properly and have it tailored so the corset fits perfectly, but I’ll share an update once I do 🤍 Also would love opinions on styling: What kind of veil would you pair with a dress this detailed? Or hair detail Hair up, down, or something in between? Still kind of in shock that this is mine. Once I try it on I’ll share better pictures of all the details. I don’t have a big bridal party so I wanted to share it with others who would get it submitted by /u/ImpressLeading4229 to r/myweddingdress [link] [comments]
