My Experience With A Cheap E-Bike (I Should Have Listened)
So I bought the TST R9 Ultra e-bike that’s been spammed on social media like TikTok for months now. $800 for a moped style ebike with dual 15ah batteries (30ah total) sounded so good. I bought it with the intention of doing food delivery and running general errands. I used it to get groceries. To do Uber Eats and DoorDash (frequent 40-50 mile shifts). I had issues no doubt. The tires sucked butt. Bald rear tire 750 miles in. 5x inner tube replacements. Frequent brake adjustments. I still loved it. But today the rear rim cracked. No collision, no major hit or scrap or anything. It just broke off in the middle of the ride and I didn’t notice until I got a flat (again). Riding home was super scary after replacing the rear inner tube cause of the cracked rim literally poking right at the tire. I only inflated it to 10 PSI cause anymore and it was just pressing on the tire bad. Just submitted the support ticket and the refund request is in progress (they say it’ll be approved refund without return but we will see). Now I’m looking for another ~$1000 ebike with good mileage for food delivery. Any suggestions for bikes that won’t break after 2 months? Edit: Seller is offering a replacement motor but as of now it’s not clear if it’s for free or if I’ll have to pay something. Will update when I have new info submitted by /u/xJadusable to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

AITA for asking my roommate to store their e-bike in our secure garden?
My new roommate (of 1 month) brought an e-bike home and put it in our living room. They didn't mention getting one beforehand, let alone storing it in a small, communal space. I just came home and saw it there. I asked them if it could be placed in our garden (completely fenced off, padlocked and only accessible by us) because the battery fire risk of it being indoors makes me uncomfortable. They're pushing back because it's "too heavy" to push through our small apartment, out to the garden. I empathised and said I get that's heavy but it's a fire risk and the living room is a shared space, and keeping an e-bike that's been outdoors isn't clean, safe or fair. They agreed the bike was an eyesore, but then got personal, saying that all the decor in the living room is mine (I've lived here for 4 years and have furnished the entire living room) and that they should be allowed to have their "one object" in the room, and that they don't "want it to feel like i’m paying to live in your flat by your rules". Mind you, not once have they ever brought any furniture or decor to the space (which I wouldn't even have an issue with because it's a shared space!). I reminded them that this isn't about personal belongings (which again, I wouldn't have an issue with), but about SAFETY concerning e-bikes, which the landlord's home insurance doesn't cover. I even suggested that they put it behind the massive padlocked side door that can be accessed (only by us) from the front of the apartment. But they're adamant about keeping it inside our flat because they can't promise they'll be able to keep it outside (basically, they're too lazy to do so). I would never put them in this position or compromise their safety/comfort, and if it were me, I would've at least discussed things with them before bringing any large items into shared spaces (especially items that have caused house fires and experts recommend storing them in a space separate from the home). Despite reminding them that this is about OUR safety and that the landlord's insurance does not cover e-bike issues, they keep making it personal and shifting the frame from my actual concerns to "rules" that don't even exist. I really wanted to come to a compromise between us but I'm not risking my safety and possibly being held liable for any damages for their happiness, which I'd never expect nor want them to do for me. Since we can't come to a compromise, I'd like to escalate it to the landlord as a neutral third party, but I really don't want to. AITA? TL;DR: My roommate wants to store their e-bike in our shared living room. Despite me expressing my safety concerns and providing reasonable solutions, they're adamant about storing their large outdoor item in a communal indoor space out of principle rather than practicality and safety. We can't come to a compromise so I'd like to escalate it to the landlord (but I really don't want to). submitted by /u/noveltea_ to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Steampunk deadly e bike
Thought I should post this. I built this bike from a retrospec fixie for commuting. Got hit by a car who turned left in front of me after 2 weeks of having it finished. I haven’t ridden it since, but I got it to 48 mph on a straight, smooth, empty road when I was testing it out. The motor has modes, but maximum ran 2000w at 72v. Battery is 30 amp hours, max draw 3kw. Gives me about 25 miles riding fast as hell with no pedaling, probably 40 in eco mode. Somehow the bike only suffered the bars getting twisted to the side and a flat rear tire. So no actual damage. Time of crash I was in “eco” mode, which limits to 450w at 72v, about 18mph (I was going slightly uphill) Injuries sustained: broken c7 vertebrae, laceration to the right temporal area requiring 27 staples, broken right ribs 1-5, broken pinkie that was not treated (I’m sure they were more worried about the other stuff) Now recovered, able to walk again and back to work, thank God I’m not paralyzed. Please be safe everyone and assume EVERY driver isn’t paying attention! Just one moment can change your whole life! WEAR YOUR HELMET!!!! This was a one off where I forgot my helmet in my girlfriend’s car, and I surely will just stay home if that ever happens again! submitted by /u/Matt_the_Alien to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

Rant from a NOLA e-bike shop: why we tell callers daily we can’t fix their broken e-bikes
I need to vent for a minute, because this has become a daily thing and it’s wearing us down. I run an e-bike shop in New Orleans with over 40 e-bike models on our floor. Multiple times a day, 7 days a week, the phone rings and it’s the same conversation over and over. As soon as callers hear the words “bike shop,” they ask if we fix or work on e-bikes. Unfortunately, in most cases we already know how the conversation is going to end. We’re going to have to tell them that their e-bike isn’t something we can repair, and often isn’t something any bike shop we know can repair. As you can imagine, callers find this incredibly frustrating. We get it. But we’re not trying to be difficult. The reality is that we literally cannot get parts, documentation, or technical support for many of the e-bikes people are buying. Here’s what actually happens behind the scenes. A lot of these “brands” are not real manufacturers. They’re generic bikes ordered overseas with a logo slapped on them. Often someone thinks they can make easy money selling e-bikes online at super low prices. For a few weeks or months everything seems fine. Then problems start. Controllers fail. Displays die. Chargers go bad. Wiring harnesses are proprietary. Battery connectors are nonstandard. When we try to help, there’s nowhere to go. No parts. No service manuals. No tech support line. No way to safely confirm voltages or pinouts. In many cases, the importer has already stopped responding because even they can’t get answers from the factory anymore. So the customer calls us. People assume a bike shop can just tinker and “figure it out.” The reality is that modern e-bikes are electrical systems, not just bikes with motors. Guessing wrong can destroy a battery, fry a controller, or create a real safety hazard. We’re not going to experiment on someone’s bike when there is zero support chain behind it. The hardest part is the human side. The caller is understandably upset. They spent real money. Often they were told any bike shop could service it. Now they’re being told no, and it feels personal. It’s not. Here’s the uncomfortable truth nobody tells you before you buy. If you buy an e-bike online or from a big-box store, you’re often on your own the moment something electrical fails. Local shops generally service what they sell because we have real relationships with those brands. We can get parts. We can walk through troubleshooting with factory-trained technicians. That support is built into the price, whether people realize it or not. I genuinely wish the industry would standardize more. Chargers, displays, controllers, error codes, programming, connectors. It would make everyone’s life easier. But that’s not the world we’re living in right now. So if you’re in New Orleans and thinking about buying an e-bike, please factor this in. The decision isn’t just about speed, range, or price. It’s about what happens when something electronic fails, because sooner or later it will. This isn’t meant to scare anyone. E-bikes bring a lot of joy to people’s lives. I’m just trying to save folks from a mistake we see every single day, and from making an angry phone call to a shop that genuinely cannot help them. End rant. submitted by /u/Particular-Taro154 to r/NewOrleans [link] [comments]

Help a Euro guy understand US e-bikes
this sub is seriously baffling me for the most part here in Europe class 1 pedal assists(motor up to 25kph) are the common type of bike, with class 2 being called s-pedelec(up to 40kph) requiring a plate and license and therefore being way less commmon. No throttles, just pedal assist is the common config, and they look just like the analog counterparts in their category of setup. Now on this US centric sub i see the seeming obsession with those weird, undersized fat tire mopeds with throttles. Fat tires are like the worst performance option in any discipline. Bad for efficiency because all the unneeded width and weight. Need extra large motors because of all that added rolling resistance and 20" wheels needing way more rpm to hit good speeds. Adding even more weight in battery and motor. I get the need for a compact city bike, but a short wheelbase 26"er or something, on narrower all purpose tires would make a way more sensible bike in the end. Seriously i would love to know how the worst possible bike design became the seemingly dominant choice in the US. can't get my head around this submitted by /u/Worried_Document8668 to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

E-bikes are battery powered bicycles not battery powered motorcycles
There’s been a few posts about the speed limits for e-bikes in NYC and I’ve noticed the comments are all over so I figured I’d post my hot take: E-bikes are battery powered bicycles not battery powered motorcycles. A leisurely human powered bicyclist travels under 15mph. It seems logical that a battery powered bicyclist should travel the same speed. Mopeds and motorcycles leisurely travel at faster speeds. When an e-bike leisurely travels at faster speeds it’s being operated as a moped or motorcycle. This means an e-bike should require the same constraints: age, license, registration, insurance. Just because it’s called an electronic bicycle doesn’t change the underlying circumstances for protecting riders, pedestrians, motorists, etc. Seeing 13 year olds ride on the roads at 30mph with traffic is dangerous. submitted by /u/phillynick to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

I let my brother ride my e-bike. This is how he returned it.
I’ve had the bike for maybe 2 weeks. I let him ride it to work yesterday because I didn’t need to ride it. I rode it to work today and when I took the battery off I saw the key and the battery. This is how I get it back? Not only that, but when I push the bike the chain makes a clicking sound. This is my first time owning an ebike and I have no idea what to do. When I would ride it to work before the battery would stay on 6 bars the whole way there and would only go down 1 bar when I got back home. On the way to work today it went down 3 bars and the 2nd bar is flashing indicating it’s going to drop down again. I don’t even know if I’ll make it home in 6 hours or not, I’ve got nobody to pick me up so I’ll have to see how this goes and hope for the best. I keep the e-bike in side to stay out of the rain. The battery is always removed from the bike when not in use. He promised he would take care of it and if it rains he said he wouldn’t ride it. He lied. submitted by /u/killian_riv7576 to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

About 50 dead E-bike batteries
So I was DDing at a regional chain bike shop because they often throw away new-in-package bike parts like tires and tubes. The owner caught me. Instead of hastling me, he asked me what exactly I was looking for. I mentioned that I was collecting lithium batteries and he was like "I got you!" And took me into the back room and loaded up a handcart with a couple of years worth of accumulated lithium E bike batteries. He says they're all testing 1-2v below optimal and still have a small amount of life left in them. submitted by /u/kingofzdom to r/DumpsterDiving [link] [comments]

Lesson learned: Buy your e-bike from a reputable brand — not some ghost company off Amazon.
After going through four bikes, I ended up buying the “ZDZa” e-bike on Amazon. And here’s the hard-earned truth I learned: Those glowing YouTube reviews of cheap Chinese e-bikes? Take them with a grain of salt. These reviewers are usually getting the bikes for free, and by the time you’re watching their video, they’re already riding their next freebie from another mystery brand. Meanwhile, you’re stuck with a product that has no real support. The manufacturer of my bike is basically a ghost — they set up some slick-looking product images, slap together a basic Instagram account, and vanish. It took me spending $700 just to dig up a contact email for the “warranty” (which, of course, no one has responded to). The battery on mine turned out to be faulty. Thankfully, Amazon gave me a one-time courtesy refund — even they couldn’t get in touch with the manufacturer. So now I’ve got a glorified mountain bike that weighs a ton. A few things I learned: • Don’t trust influencer hype. If they got the bike for free, they’re not going to deal with long-term problems like you will. • Buy from a reputable company — one that actually exists and offers real customer support. Faulty battery? Will I might be able to get it rebuilt at a battery repair shop? Has anyone had experience looking for local shops? Are Some batteries cross-compatible? At the end of the day, I learned my lesson. Cheap upfront often means expensive later. Stick with known brands — you’ll save yourself the headache. submitted by /u/Zyoneatslyons to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

PSA: You Can Charge Your E-bike Battery to 100% Every Day Without Worry
Cross-post to this sub because I see this all the time. Electrical engineering expert here: There’s a common myth floating around that you should never charge your e-bike battery to 100% because it supposedly kills the battery faster. I’m here to tell you that this is largely overblown—and here’s why: Modern Batteries Have Built-In Capacity Limiters • Due to fire and safety regulations in first-world countries like the U.S. and EU, manufacturers already implement capacity limits on lithium-ion batteries. • This means that when your battery “hits 100%,” it’s not actually using its full theoretical capacity—there’s a buffer in place to prevent excessive wear. • If your bike is sold in a regulated market, you can be confident this safety feature exists. The Extra Degradation Is Negligible • The difference in battery degradation from regularly charging to 100% vs. 90% is tiny—often around 1% per year or even less. • Unless you’re planning to use the same battery for 10+ years, you likely won’t even notice the difference. You’ll Probably Replace Your bike or Battery Before It Matters • By the time degradation becomes noticeable (many, many years down the road), you’ll likely have already moved on to a new bike or swapped out the battery. • Batteries degrade more from deep discharges (riding it down to near 0%) than from staying topped up. Convenience Matters • Charging to 100% ensures you get the maximum range every ride. • There’s no practical reason to limit your charge unless you plan to keep the same battery for over a decade (which most people don’t). Bottom Line Go ahead and charge your bike to 100% every night. The real-world impact on battery life is so small that it’s not worth the inconvenience of limiting your charge. Enjoy the full range and ride worry-free. submitted by /u/MJ-Baby to r/ebikes [link] [comments]

Police recovered my $4,600 e-bike. This is what I learned
Don’t use a crappy lock. I had a $30 Giant U-lock. The thief used an angle grinder to cut through in probably just a few seconds. There are locks out there that have guarantees that will cover up to $5,000 Kryptonite if the bike is stolen and the lock fails Get adequate insurance. I found out that most renter’s insurance policies—perhaps all—will not cover your bike if it’s self-propelled (any bike with a throttle). There are specific bike policies out there to insure your bike to theft/damage. If you have any recs please comment Make sure you have your bike’s serial number. Silly me forgot to write it down. The shop didn’t have it either. Fortunately, there were some distinguishing features I was able to point out to law enforcement to identify my bike. The serial number is also crucial to post to https://bikeindex.org/, which many pawn shops use to ensure the bikes they buy aren’t stolen. File a police report right away. The police and renter’s insurance especially can’t do much without a report. It generally needs to be written within 48 hours. Get the word out. My city has a stolen bike search FB page. If I hadn’t posted on this page, I don’t think that the police would have been able to reunite me with my ride. The incredible officers in my city spend countless hours on and off the clock to locate these bikes and bring them back to their owners. Make your bike undesirable. If you have to leave your bike unattended for some reason, give thieves a reason to think twice. They skipped over my other bike because of the massive chain securing it. Do other things like removing the battery, a wheel, the seat post, etc to deter them. Have a solid security system. I had a Ring camera with an expired subscription within feet of my bikes. It recorded nothing since I wasn’t paying the monthly fee. Get yourself a camera that doesn’t require a fee and actually records footage 24/7. Use a tracker on your bike. AirTags are nice but I don’t love that they alert the thief. I heard dog trackers also work well. Keep your bike inside if possible. I had gotten lazy. Don’t be me. submitted by /u/dal__pal to r/ebikes [link] [comments]
