Over the last two weeks I experienced strange network issues that I traced back to the latest Amazon firmware update for Echo Dot 3rd generation. The Firmware of all of my 5 Echo Dot 3rd gen devices received an update from firmware 12718781316 to 12853027460, rolled out in waves over several days. The Bug Immediately appears after each device received the update. It started flooding the entire network with hundreds of mDNS UDP packets per second to multicast address 224.0.0.251. This affects every device on your LAN and WLAN — computers, IoT devices, smart TVs, streaming boxes, printers , smartphones — anything connected. Observed Impact Brother MFP became completely unresponsive, only recoverable by hard reboot Nokia Android TV streaming box became excessively chatty high load on virtual machines (Proxmox cpu load increased from 4% till 25%); incoming network traffic from nearly zero to 150 kbps till 350 kbps per second (only udp pakets!!) VPN connections dropping WhatsApp video calls degraded at a separate household (my parents) — resolved immediately after unplugging their Dot Gaming and streaming likely affected for anyone within the network Reproduction Run this from any Linux machine on your network. Replace eth0 with your interface and the IP with your Echo Dot's IP: timeout 30 tcpdump -i eth0 -n -q host 2>/dev/null Normal output should show only a handful of packets in 30 seconds. This suggests the bug may not be triggered by the firmware alone, but by a specific combination with other devices in the network. Also in a isolated VLAN they seem to be silent In my case, Home Assistant and other mDNS-active devices (Android TV, smart home devices) seem to act as a trigger that causes the Echo Dots to start flooding. Without these triggers the Dots may behave normally even with the buggy firmware. This would explain why some users never notice the problem — they simply have no trigger in their network. And why normal users would never find the root cause even if affected — their WiFi just feels slower. Update: it looks like the video button option has gone, so there’s no physical way to open Netflix or Silk Browser either iPlayer, Ch4, Disney etc. You can’t ask Alexa to open the web either - you have to specifically say: Alexa open Silk Browser. For Netflix you have to ask Alexa to open it. Update 2: if I ask Alexa to play a BBC radio station, it can no longer find it. If I ask it to open BBC Sounds and play the station, it says it doesn’t have that skill. But if I ask it to just open BBC Sounds, then it does. And then when I ask it to play the radio station, it will. Update 3: If I ask Alexa to open Apple Podcasts, it. Ie says that Apple Podcasts is not possible with this device. I just bought a new 3 story town home and part of the electronics package from a firm called CPI security was a controller for the thermostats, their own doorbell camera, and the ability to turn off or on 2 lights in the home. They also included a amazon echo as well. I opened up the package, saw a grey ball, then put it back. Other than play my spotify music off my iPhone what is this thing supposed to do? Is that all it is? Can I use it for my new TCL 75" Amazon fire based TV and will the sound be better than a samsung sound bar I have? Just trying to figure how much of a useless gimmick this is or not. Can someone please help with the Alexa MP integration? I managed to install, authenticate and the integraiton is up and running, with my devices all being picked up. However every single one is showing as unavailable? All I want to do is essentially cast to the Dot in my daughter's room from Music Assistant so that she can listen to audiobooks at night. So lost my Dad last month and then the other night I was in bed and said to my other half.. "It's a horrible thought thinking there could be nothing after. If that's the case we truly never see them again. I've checked commands and there was an 'alexa play' but I thought the song choice was odd too. Not something I'd usually listen to but George Harrison was in the beatles and later the traveling wilburys. My Dad was in a band and played a lot of beatles stuff. We had a travelling wilburys song at the funeral. I'm agnostic/skeptical but this did strike me as a bit odd. We've also had the usual flickering lights and white feathers appearing in odd places but this seemed a bit less ambiguous to me. My Echo Show 8 is already a display that shows me ads more than it shows the time, and now my Echo Dot to?!? “Alexa, tell me a joke” “Here’s one” …. “Presented by the all new Toyota BZ” and then she told me to visit some website. This kinda sucks right now, there really isn’t a good voice assistant for me. I used to use Google home and Echos, but I got rid of my Google home speakers because I felt that Alexa was more convenient to access (verbally) than saying “hey Google”. Obligatory occurred today. Sorry if it’s too long. As part of my job, I attended a conference as a speaker, this is the kind of event where people network in between sessions and the kind with promotional merch from sponsors. As soon as I arrived, I noticed that one of the tech giants had a table with some of their merch and an Amazon Echo Dot. That’s neat! I thought. Throughout the day, I visited the different tables and grabbed some of the trinkets they had. Stickers, a keychain, some funny socks, yet the echo dot remained there. I noticed that periodically they would restock their supply of things people took as they chatted. Near the end of the day, I gathered the courage to speak to the rep that was manning the table with the echo dot. I really have no use for an echo dot, but I recently got a digital doorbell and It works with the Alexa ecosystem and I thought it might be cool to get the doorbell to ring upstairs, especially if it was for free. I didn’t want to miss up on the chance of taking home another piece of domotica, just because “I didn’t ask”. Me: hey! What do you have to do to get the echo dot. Rep: oh it’s easy, all I need is your business card. Me: oh I don’t have a business card. Rep: no problem! Do you have linked in? Me: yes I do! *spends a good 2.5 minutes trying to log in, resetting my password, figuring out the 2FA all the while speaking to the nice rep” Me: here is the qr. Rep: great! Scans it. At this moment, someone came over and told the rep that they needed to go somewhere else. The rep got up from the table, gave me two thumbs up and said: “Ok you’re all good!! “ And just left me there alone. The echo dot on the table. I stood there for what must have been a good 55 seconds thinking about what to do next. Is that it? The echo dot is mine? The next speaker was just starting in the room next door so I thought “I guess I’m good to take it home, I better get back to the session”. I grabbed the little guy from the table and quickly found a seat at the auditorium, the echo dot sat on the chair next to me. While the speaker was presenting, I noticed that some of the organizers were hastily walking up and down the aisles, looking around the crowd. A sense of doom started to stir within me. One of them quickly paused in the aisle next to me, but didn’t say anything. They left. Whew! I’m In the clear!!! I thought. I was not. When the speaker finished their presentation. A very nice person, one of the organizers sat down next to me, this is when I knew I had FU. She very nicely and politely explained that the echo dot that was occupying the seat next to me (she pointed to it) was the prize to a very special draw they were going to have at the end of the session. She then very nicely asked if it was ok if she took it back to the main area. Again she pointed at it. I quickly grabbed from the seat and gave it to her; I couldn’t get it away from me fast enough. I apologized but not a lot of words came out of me, I was fully aware of the FU. I wanted the earth to swallow me. If I wasn’t next on the roster of speakers, I would’ve bolted from the event. And moved to Finland, probably. TLDR: inadvertently mistook a two thumbs up as a sign that I could take a tech gadget from a work event thinking that big tech was just giving away free stuff. I had already pulled the plug on my Echo Show 5 - when my alarm clock became an annoying advertisement. Advertisements on my Echo Show devices is really a non-starter for me - a paid service (prime) that gives me unwanted ads. No thanks!!! I’m new to this community and apologise if this has been asked here before. I have a 4th gen echo dot(purchased in Aug 2021) which has stopped responding to the wake word(Alexa). I checked that power is there as the buttons are making sound and showing appropriate lights However, when I press the listen button(not sure what it’s called, the one that makes light go blue) and speak something, it doesn’t recognise that either. I'm staying at an AirBNB and tonight while I was making dinner with the TV on the Echo Dot starting playing a jungle while repeating "go home". The TV did the same along with text saying "go home" and an image of a door. I messaged the host and she said this happened because of a system update.
