I haven’t used tampons or pads in over 5 years, I have been using period cups because it’s better for the environment. I’m also choosing to use cloth diapers and making my own wipe solution for my cloth baby wipes. TLDR: SIL's ideas about what being pregnant and having kids would be like are totally shattered by the reality of what those things are actually like. So she and her husband started trying for a baby after a few years of marriage. Her husband installed tires at a tire shop. She stopped working her office job when they married, and just cleaned, cooked, gardened, and sewed in their tiny basement apartment all day, saying that she wanted to start selling her crafts online. She never really got around to that. Before she got pregnant she always said she wanted at least 4 kids, wanted to homeschool them, and wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. Well, they got pregnant, and she quickly realized that pregnancy sucks. She hated it. Hated being uncomfortable, hated having to pee all the time, hated having no energy, and hated being emotionally unbalanced. She and her husband started talking about how they would probably use a surrogate mother for future pregnancies. Not sure how they imagined they would pay for that with their one-person income. Despite her disappointment in the "magic of pregnancy" not being what she hoped for, she pushed forward with her rose-colored glasses ideas of what caring for her baby would be like. She acquired expensive, eco-friendly baby gear, insisted that she would only be using cloth diapers, dreamed about the joys of breastfeeding, sewed little outfits, and practiced recipes for homemade baby food. Giving birth was not what she imagined it would be. The labor was intense and lasted a long time. She hadn't been planning on an epidural, but ended up caving and asking for one, but had waited for too long and wasn't allowed to get one. When the baby came out, there was tearing. He wasn't breathing very well, so they whisked him away to the NICU before she could hold him. She wasn't able to see him for many hours, as she needed medical attention as well. My husband and I actually got to see and hold the baby before she did. She was distraught, in pain, and incredibly frustrated that she couldn't be with the baby in his first few hours of life. They went home late the next day. He was too big for the little outfits she had sewed for him. He wouldn't breastfeed, so she had to run out to the store to get formula, which she had said while pregnant that she would never in a million years use for her babies. He cried all the time and they weren't able to sleep very much. Cleaning cloth diapers turned out to be more disgusting than she could handle, so she started buying regular diapers. He was more expensive then they had thought he would be (even though he wasn't really any more expensive than a normal baby is), so her husband started working more hours. Her lack of energy and motivation that she experienced during pregnancy got worse while taking care of the baby, and her gardening, sewing, cleaning, and general housewifery became super neglected. She missed spending time with her friends and her husband. She was tired, stressed, lonely, and depressed over the slow realization that motherhood wasn't what she had thought it would be. After a year, they had to move back to the other side of the state to the middle of nowhere and nothing to do area that her family is in. They needed financial help and help with childcare so she could go back to work. Before the baby, they had excitedly moved to the area I live in because it's a fun, beautiful place to live. Now they're stuck back where they grew up. The kid is 7 now. I got divorced from my SIL's brother, so I'm not involved in the kid's life. However, the last time I talked to my SIL, she was super depressed, and expressed disappointment at how everything had turned out with pregnancy and parenthood, that she hated being back in her hometown, and that she wished things were still like they used to be in her life. They never had any more children, they still live in their hometown, the kid never did any of the homeschooling she had planned on, I never see her post pictures of the cooking, crafts, and gardening she used to enjoy, she works a lame job, and I imagine she still regrets how things turned out. I'm sure she loves the kid, but she obviously didn't understand what she was signing up for. My uncle and aunt are expecting twin boys in May. I’d like to give them something thoughtful and practical, and something that would inspire them to be a little less wasteful when it comes to taking care of two babies. I know diapers and wipes are the main source of waste, but I can’t dictate if they are going to use cloth diapers and cloth wipes (and they probably won’t as being eco-friendly isn’t at the top of their priorities, poo is still disgusting, and they will have to do double the work). Also, cloth diapers are not really suitable for new born babies who would grow out of them really quickly anyways. However, if there is something that would actually lessen their burden and reduce their waste, or even a less wasteful swap that only require the same work, it would make a perfect gift. I personally started my journey to zero waste after switching to a menstrual cup for comfort and convenience, not necessarily for environmental reasons. And got “hooked” to the idea of reducing my waste as a by product. Maybe there is something similar for new parents? Another thing is I live in Australia while they are all the way over in Canada. So I’d have to think about shipping and stuff. I can order something online from North America and have them ship straight to their address (any chance I could get something second hand that way?)...
