Firstly, happy holidays everyone and best to you all. Secondly, I've been wondering when did the Elf on a shelf become a thing?
As someone who isn't a parent, yet I find it strange. Why does Santa need a nerc elf? I never heard of it and then seemingly out of nowhere in the 2000s it blew up. submitted by /u/AdSpecialist6598 to r/Millennials [link] [comments]

Anyone not starting the “elf on the shelf” tradition?
My husband and I (both 32) have a 13mo son. We have other millennial friends with older kids who got into Elf on the Shelf but are now so over it and have told us to not even start it. Which I get - it’s a month of making creative messes each day you have to clean up. It sounds like kids reaaally get into it but we’re going to hard pass on it. Anyone else with young kids not planning on participating? submitted by /u/Illustrious_Cold5699 to r/Millennials [link] [comments]

Parents that don't do Elf on the Shelf, how do you explain to your kids why you don't?
Atp, my 3 kids don't know what they are missing. My twins are 18mo and daughter is 4yo. I despise the entire concept. I'm so sick of scrolling social media just to see moms compete with elaborate posts and pictures displaying whose elf "gets into the best mischief overnight" 🙄 and call me the Grinch, but I really don't want to be responsible for orchestrating a whole month of this silly elf moving around my house. It seems so exhausting, and I'm already exhausted to begin with. That being said, I worry my kids are going to feel left out, especially when they reach elementary school and hear classmates discussing their elves. I also worry that somehow not having an elf will eventually correlate to Santa not being real... am I overthinking? Lol If you don't do this tradition, have your kids felt left out? Has it taken away the magic of Santa when they find out about other childrens elves? How do you explain why your household doesn't have one? submitted by /u/Helpful-Plankton751 to r/toddlers [link] [comments]

AITAH for not starting the Elf on the Shelf that was gifted to my kids by MIL?
I know Christmas is a while away but I was here thinking of how it’s looming and remembered last year my MIL mailed a package to my kids (we live in different states) that I intercepted when they weren’t in the room and I saw was an Elf on the Shelf which I was NOT prepared to start last year. My kids are 5 and almost 3 at the time for reference. It was sent during the season and I was already stressed out and didn’t want to have to come up with new ideas every day and deal with tantrums if the elf didn’t get moved or if my youngest touched it (they are supposed to lose their magic if they are touched) but he would DEFINITELY be touching it. I put it away in the basement crawl space promptly where he still sits today…. My husband was upset last year that I didn’t want to do it and says I should just do it because the kids will love it. edit to add my husband was NOT raging or even a fight really just he would have liked me to do it - had no idea that saying he was upset would make him the villain 😅** I have so many friends who complain on their socials plus other people (who I don’t know - influencers I guess) that always complain about starting the elf and wishing they hadn’t and my kids’ school does some so I kind of feel like I still don’t want/need to and because my kids are so young I feel like it’s a commitment for like 10 years. I also think my MIL feelings are hurt that I didn’t want to do it and I do feel that it will come up again this year. Should I suck it up and start doing it this year? Maybe wait another year or two? Or stand strong? And if I do AITAH? 😆 submitted by /u/IllustriousToday3176 to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

Our elf on the shelf is dead forever and I am so relieved
Last year my son (then 9) decided elf on the shelf was not real when he had a friend over. Touched it, picked it up, threw it on the floor and later electrical taped it to a robot vacuum. My youngest was watching and laughed and I thought, finally, nobody believes in this annoying elf anymore. So, Pinecone the elf disappeared after that. This December, my youngest child asked if elf on the shelf was coming back and I told her no, pretty sure her brother had killed him forever. And, I don’t even feel guilty because the holiday season is so much less stressful without it. To all parents, do not get sucked into getting an elf on the shelf. They will be the bane of your existence for years to come. edit Apparently lots of people have strong feelings about the elf. The kids and I had an awesome holiday. We went to Christmas festivals and school programs; they were in a holiday play, we made Christmas cookies and all of the typical holiday joy and not once did we miss the stupid elf. If the elf works for your family, that’s great. And I mean that sincerely. If you’re hanging on by a thread and your cup is empty and one more thing to remember is the last thing you want to do, be kind to yourself. Your kids would rather spend time with a less stressed parent than to have all this extra stuff. submitted by /u/Superb_Writing845 to r/confession [link] [comments]

AITA for not doing Elf on the Shelf despite my kids enjoying it?
I’m a 39-year-old mother juggling five kids under the age of 7 while also navigating a full-time job and pursuing my PHD. To say I’m stretched thin is an understatement. Every spare moment I have is dedicated to quality time with my kids – playing games, reading, visiting the park, or simply enjoying moments of relaxation together. I want to emphasize this so it's clear I'm dedicated to my children despite my tight schedule. I love them and wish I had more time for them. However, the holiday season brought a new suggestion from my husband, who is on a 6 month sabbatical (42m) and mother-in-law, who is retired (64) - Elf on the Shelf. At first, I loved the idea, I didn’t do it as a child of course and it also seemed cute, but I quickly realized that committing to this tradition meant adding yet another task to my already overloaded plate. The idea of writing letters and creatively hiding an elf every night seemed fun but impractical given my limited free time. Both my husband and mother-in-law decided to take charge of this Elf on the Shelf adventure. On December 1st, my mother-in-law read the kids a fun story about the elf and made a grand spectacle of finding it. It was adorable, and the children were ecstatic. By day two, my mother-in-law expressed that she was tired and unable to come by every night to write letters and move the elf. She suggested that I take over. I firmly declined. This annoyed both her and my husband. On nights three and four, my husband reluctantly stepped in, already grumbling about the added responsibility. When he hinted at needing help, I stood my ground, refusing to budge. By night five, the pressure mounted. My husband and mother-in-law confronted me, accusing me of laziness and essentially ruining Christmas for our kids. I reiterated my initial stance, emphasizing that I never wanted to undertake this Elf on the Shelf endeavor in the first place. I made it clear that if they ceased their efforts, I wouldn't continue it either. Days six and seven passed with the elf staying put, resulting in disappointed children and and an angry husband and mother-in-law. Reluctantly, my husband resumed the Elf on the Shelf routine, but he still views me as unreasonable and uncooperative. He called be a bad mother, lazy, and an asshole. He’s also refusing to talk to me. I can't help but wonder if I've been immature, it takes less than 15 minutes a day to write a letter and creatively hide the else . But deep down, I still feel that adding this tradition is an unnecessary burden on my life. Does my unwillingness to get involved in Elf on the Shelf make me an asshole? submitted by /u/Noelfone11 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

AITA for throwing away the elf on the shelf and "ruining Christmas" for my kids after my husband's prank?
For context, this year was the first time we would try the "elf on the shelf" with our kids. We have 3 kids, Lucas (9M), Andy (8M), and Claire (5F). Where Lucas and Andy are from our past relationships. However, Miles (my husband M37) has accepted Andy as his, and so did I (F35) with Lucas. Every Christmas is special for Andy, his bd is on Dec/24. His dad started a tradition where Santa would've consideration with him for being a "kid of Christmas". So he feels magical and special. I always try to give him that. Last year, i left "Santa Claus" footsteps, ate a carrot and "grass" he left for Rudolf. Stuff like that. My husband doesn't think it's a good idea i do all that for him, and I'm showing favoritism. So, we should shut it down, because of my ex's decision to create a tradition without considering my other kid's feelings. I disagree since i do consider the 3 of them. But he asked if we could so smth else, like the Elf on the shelf. I had no problem with it, but I didn't know how that works. He explained me quickly, and since he was the one who offered, i let him do it. We bought the cute Elf. My kids named it "Bob". Later my husband explained them they should behave, and never touch/hold Bob if they don't want it to be naughty. At first, it was cute to see them spy on Bob, try to see it "fly" each night. Andy was the most excited of all, i found him one night talking with it, asking it if Santa still remembered him. But my husband took seriously the "Behave or Bob would be naughty" part. Lucas was his first victim after he didn't do his chores. The next day, his face was drawn with sharpie markers. Then Claire, who touched Bob and her fave onesie was destroyed. Apparently, Bob had cut some pieces of it, while she was sleeping. Miles was having fun, but i could see my kids weren't. I talked to him about how we should lower the pranks, he agreed but wanted to catch Andy since he hadn't break any rules. I told him that Bob's supposed to tell Santa instead of being naughty. We argued but he finally agreed. Fast forward, it's Christmas Eve and in the afternoon we had some of Andy's friends to celebrate his bd. So the kids were playing in backyard. But my husband looked sus. I decided to look for Bob. It was supposed to be in the kitchen but it wasn't there, I asked Miles where it was and he told me "no idea". I started getting paranoid, but Andy asked me if we could cut the cake already. I put my best face on and went for it. The cake was in a box, and when Andy opened the box. He starts crying. I take a look and it's ruined. "Bob" was covered in all of it, appearing he had been eating the cake. Half of the cake wasn't there anymore. Miles starts laughing and so did some of the other parents. My blood is boiling and i grab Bob and throw it in the trash, Then i grabbed Miles. We have a terrible argument, calls me an AH for what i did to Bob, that I've ruined it, how are we supposed to keep the "magic" with our kids if i wasn't supposed to touch Bob. Edit: Hi everyone, so the response has been really overwhelming. I'm sorry if it took me some time to answer i was kinda avoiding the post, since i was conflicted by the possible outcome. I'm going through all your comments, so i can answer some of your questions. I'd also explain things you all have doubts in common. 1.-Andy's dad is from Canada, he visit's Andy every spring, summer and on Christmas break. This year he stayed for his job, so he isn't an absent parent. 2.-After Andy's bd i told Miles to get out of the house, and so he did, he spent Christmas with my in laws. I stayed with the kids, and all of them slept in Andy's room. My kids didn't want to leave his brother alone. The next morning we opened the gifts and i made sure that Andy could feel special after what happened on his bd, so i wrote a note from "Bob". Saying that he is sorry if scared him and his siblings, he didn't do his job correctly so now he would be flying to the NP with Santa. And when he asked if Santa still remembered the kid of Xmas, he did. Santa was really happy to see him. 3.-My kids and i, are ok, we are sleeping at my parent's house. And we would celebrate NYE here too. 4.-Yes, Claire was usign the onesie while she was sleeping. My husband took the idea out of Tik Tok. And no, Andy, did nothing to even be "attacked" by Bob. submitted by /u/Hour_Astronomer2471 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
