Scoured plans- modified a Frank Betz plan- paid cash for a 1/2 acre lot- under 35k- built it for under $200/sq ft when builders wanted $300-350. Financed less than half with community bank. No injuries but several mishaps that kept it lively- Boom truck delivering drywall- overloaded it and boom dropped over 40 boards which busted up on my porch and they filled my haulaway to the brim with the debris- damaged the entry subfloor and notched the newly installed door I hand finished🥹 Chimney flue installers got stuck at 36' up bc their lift ran out of gas- freezing temps and took an hour to get help- I was 2 hours away picking up metal roofing trim. So, fared pretty well! Would I do it again- absolutely- but take more epsom salt baths. I highly doubt I'll be pissing on my plants, especially considering I bring them indoors during winter. Just wondering if it's that much better than using a fertilizer. Hey everyone, I wanted to share this method I've started that is projected to make me 400 dollars of passive income every month that I'm currently running a live test batch for. If you have a spare corner of your bedroom and a 6 foot folding table you can do this with a little start up and make your money back within your first run with a little cash to spare after breaking even and when you get it rolling and have your first transplant into step 2 of this 3 step hustle You can get it all rolling again while waiting on step 3. I've been into gardening for a while and I love food specifically but I wanted to make some money growing seed starts. Problem is I don't have enough money to start growing a full scale garden out of my backyard.... yet. So this was my solution. I have an l shaped desk I made out of cheap Walmart 6 foot folding tables and I'm using the space of just one of these to grow culinary herbs. First things first the startup costs. As with all things it takes money to make money so lets get a 6 foot folding table, and youre gonna need 2-3 36 seed burpee reusable starter trays and those will cost you 12 bucks on amazon. You're gonna need some substrate to grow your herbs in so I recommend Coco Coir. Its made of coco fiber and can be had on amazon in 10 packs of bricks for 28.99. As for the seeds you can get them from your local garden center or go online for this one but a few packs at the garden center will run you 2-3 bucks per envelope of seeds. I'm currently running Heirloom Red Rubin Basil and Green Genevese Basil In my two reusable burpee trays but by all means go nuts with fast growing herbs. Dill, Basil, And Cilantro are all good options for fast growers but if you want to play the longer game Chives, Garlic Chives, oregano, thyme and Rosemary are all great options. You will also need some Miracle grow garden soil and some Solo Party Cups. lets talk grow lights because you're gonna need them. I recommend getting two lights to start. One double or triple gooseneck light I recommend SANSI as they are a decent brand with a good reputation for their bulbs. As for your second light You will need A 128 watt Quad Gooseneck Sansi Light. The Double gooseneck will run you back about 27 bucks on amazon and the quad head 128 watt light will run you back about 112.99 on amazon. On top of the Grow Lights Id recommend getting a timer Strip surge protector with a manual timer. A good BN-LINK Strip will run you back 22.99 So total you will have to Spend 300 dollars in start up on amazon and in scraps for a homemade fertilizer or two. 6 Ft folding table-59.27 Big Grow light- 112.99 Small Grow Light 27.02 Timer Strip-22.99 10 Pack Coco Coir Bricks-28.99 Burpee Reusable Starter trays-11.37 per tray ( I have 2) Standard Miracle Grow Garden Soil- 8.00 Seed Packets- 3 for 8.00 5 Gallon Bucket-5.00 Epsom Salt-3.35 Second Run coffee From your Used coffee grounds- Free Egg shells: whatever breakfast cost you Vinegar: 5 bucks at the store Water- Whatever your water utility is costing you Any extra bottles 1 Liter bottles you may have lying around How to execute: For those who have never grown Plants Before I'll give you a basic run down. For basil which is a fast grower you will want to basically Wet your coco coir down, and let it hydrate in your bucket. This is going to be what you grow your seeds in to start. Fill your starter trays with the fibrous coco coir and pack it down so that it compacts just enough to form a plug for your seeds to take root in. not too tight not too loose. Now take your seeds and sprinkle between 3 and 5 seeds in each cell of your tray. Water the trays from the bottom using the lids to the seed starts and make sure to put your smaller of the two lights on your seed starter trays setting your timer for 12-14 hours on and the rest of that time off to create daylight cycles for your plants (pro tip Most utility companies have off hours rates for use during off peak hours. You can pay less to run your lights at night) Now you must wait. When the seeds sprout and the first leaves take hold remember to feed them only water until the first true leaves (i.e. the second set it'll grow) takes hold. When you do this Id recommend making a concentrate plant food by making Second run coffee for nitrogen and using Epsom salt to facilitate photosynthesis. The Baby food recipe is as follows In a 1 liter bottle: Second run Coffee 1/4 cup Epsom salt 1Teaspoon Top with water This will make a 1/4 cup to one liter/quart dilution and will not burn the roots of your seedlings. store this in the fridge to avoid any fermentation issues. At 3 weeks you will want to Transplant your Seedlings into solo cups for selling This is stage 2 of the hustle. I use a bag of Miracle grow garden soil and a brick of coco coir and mix them together in the 5 gallon bucket. filling the solo cup halfway with the mix put your 3 week old seedling in the cup and cover with more of your mix. Let sit one week to help the transplant shock wear off your little guys. Now before you sell your solo cups of herbs I recommend feeding them something a little more substantial and this is where my custom Garden tonic recipe comes in. In a glass bowl mix finely powdered egg shells (i use a coffee grinder) with vinegar until the vinegar stops bubbling and the calcium in the solution reaches full saturation this is calcium acetate and is a water soluble source of calcium for your plants. In a 1 liter bottle Mix 2 cups of Calcium acetate 2 Cups of Second Run Coffee, 1/4cup to 1 cup sugar water solution (1:4 sugar: water ratio) Shake well and dose at 2 Tbsp to 1 gallon of water or 1/4 cup per 2 gallon watering can. Now the fun part. Selling them. Come up with a decent little post on marketplace and post it up with 5 dollars per seedling. for 2 trays of 36 seedlings that's a potential of 360 for regular plants but Remember that other heirlooms exist and that Purple varieties like red Rubin and other varieties like Garlic chives can net you more money ( I charge 7 dollars per cup for these) With one tray of the rare Heirloom and one tray of the typical run of the mill herbs I am projecting 430 dollars per month with this for the fast starts and charging 10 dollars for perennial herbs like rosemary, oregano, thyme and chives varieties. This is about as passive as it gets. You sit on your ass, water your plants, feed your plants once per week and in about 1 to 2 months time you can make at least 400 bucks every month for fast moving herbs like basil which nobody has during the winter. If you want to know more specifics, I have an in-depth journal here. No filter, No CO2, no heater, just a light! There are 9 CPD's, 24 Crystal Red Shrimp, and a bunch of ramshorn snails. Substrate is APT Feast. I use 100% RO water. I change 50% of the water each week, and remineralize the incoming water to 30ppm Ca and ~7.5ppm Mg. I also front-load dose my weekly fertilizer into this incoming fresh water. I dose APT Complete (APT 3) at a rate of 1mL/gal for the incoming water. Here's a look at my weekly routine: Every sunday, I use a thin cup to remove any surface scum or buildup, then drain the rest of the water needed into the sink with a 1/2"dia tubing. I have a sharpie mark on the side of the bowl that tells me exactly where my 50% water change mark is. It's about 3 gallons, thanks to the thickness of the substrate layer and hardscape. While the water is refilling, I add 1.4g CaSO4*2H2O (Gypsum) to raise the incoming water to 30ppm Ca. I add 0.5g MgSO4*7H2O (Epsom salts) to raise the incoming water to 4.4ppm Mg (the rest needed is added next). Finally, I use a small syringe to dose 3mL of APT Complete (APT 3). This 1mL per 1Gal dosing adds: ~8ppm NO3 ~4ppm PO4 ~18ppm K ~3ppm Mg (total 8.2ppm Mg) ~0.25ppm Fe And I'm done! I just sit back and relax until I do it all again next week. I do have to trim the Limnophila heterophylla every week or every other week, but the rest of the plants are very slow growing and stable. There isn't a single instance of algae in this tank! EDIT: The fish are at the front of the bowl because it's feeding time. The epsom salts state for external use only. They have matcha green tea, citrus, chamomile, seed and plant oils, fruit extracts, etc. Can i use this in gardening? Specifically with tomatoes. Thanks!
