A few surprising things I learned about how essential oils behave once they are diffused
I've been getting more into the nitty-gritty of how essential oils actually work once they're diffused indoors and I realised that most people don't talk about this but air chemistry of a room plays more a role than oil itself. For example, many oils don't just evaporate - they oxidize mid-air. Citrus oils, particularly those that are rich in limonene, break down easily when exposed to light/heat which is why their smell seems to 'vanish' quickly. On the other hand, heavier base note oils such as patchouli or vetiver aerosolize slower and cling to surfaces for longer which is why the smell lingers when the diffuser is off. I also didn't realise the extent of change in humidity and temperature on the efficiency of diffusion. In dry rooms, oils disperse more sharply, and evaporate more quickly, whereas in humid rooms, particles remain suspended for a longer period of time, but at a lower degree. A well ventilated room prevents terpene build up, and a closed room can make some compounds (especially phenols, or high terpene oils) seem much stronger than is expected. The biggest takeaway for me was that diffusion isn't just about how many drops you use - it's about how the environment changes the oil after it's in the air. Understanding volatility tiers, room airflow, and oxidation profiles honestly made my blends feel more predictable and balanced. submitted by /u/TheScentOracle to r/essentialoils [link] [comments]

Coworker got into essential oils and now it’s affecting the whole office
So this woman on my team got really into essential oils a few months ago. At first it was harmless. She’d roll some on her wrists or temples, and no one said anything. A few of us even joked about how nice it smelled, kind of like walking into a spa. Then she brought in a small USB diffuser. She set it up on her desk and it started pumping out lavender or peppermint or whatever she was in the mood for that day. It wasn’t overpowering at first, but then the blends got stronger. Some days it honestly makes the whole corner of the office smell like some kind of hippie apothecary. The kicker is she never really asked if it was okay. It just became part of the space. A couple of coworkers have quietly moved to different desks. One guy said it was giving him a headache. Another mentioned that her eucalyptus mix made his asthma flare up. She kind of brushed it off when it came up, saying everything she uses is “pure and natural” so it couldn’t possibly cause irritation. That rubbed a few people the wrong way. She’s also started suggesting oils for people’s problems. Like if you say you’re tired, she’ll pull out some citrus blend and tell you to inhale deeply. One time someone mentioned they were feeling anxious and she basically said they should stop taking meds and try frankincense instead. That one got a few awkward looks. Nobody really wants to escalate it because the trouble’s just not worth it. HR here is slow, management avoids anything that feels like “personal drama,” and most people just shrug and deal with it. But at what point is it okay to ask someone to stop doing something just because it's natural? Does being well-intentioned excuse disrupting the shared workspace? submitted by /u/Welford-Carsten to r/coworkerstories [link] [comments]

Which essential oils do you trust the most — and why?
I’ve been working with essential oils for years now, and I’m always curious to hear from other experienced users. I’m particularly interested in understanding which oils people consistently come back to — not just because they smell nice, but because they perform well. Here is a little example of what I mean: – Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) is still my go-to for tension headaches and nausea. – Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) works wonders for sleep, but only if it’s chemotyped and not too oxidized. – Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora CT cineole) is underrated for immune support in my opinion — better than eucalyptus in many cases. I would like to know: - Which oils do you trust and use most often? - Do you focus on GC/MS reports, chemotypes, or just trial & error? - Any underrated oils that surprised you over time? I’m writing and researching constantly, so insights from the community are always appreciated 🙏 submitted by /u/HistoricalGate0104 to r/essentialoils [link] [comments]

Friend is mad at me because I wouldn’t buy essential oils from our other friend who works for an MLM (all of us 25/f)
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/flounder19601953 Friend is mad at me because I wouldn’t buy essential oils from our other friend who works for an MLM (all of us 25/f) Originally posted to r/relationship_advice Original Post - rareddit Sept 26, 2018 So up until very recently, I honestly had no idea that essential oils were sold by MLM companies, or that people thought they had healing powers. I’ve been diffusing them for a few years because I like that they’re cleaner and safer than candles & incense. That’s the only reason. Last week, I invited 3 old friends from high school over for wine and appetizers—just a typical hangout. My friend “Katie” invited “Cara”. Cara went to high school with us, but I was never close with her so I wasn’t friends with her on Facebook or anything. As soon as Cara saw my diffuser, she said her side job is selling essential oils and basically starting pitching me. It was pretty obvious right away that she works for a MLM, but I honestly didn’t care. The way I saw it, since I used these oils all the time, I’d rather support someone I actually know than give my money to some company on Amazon. So I told her to shoot me a Facebook message later and we could talk about it. Anyone who’s familiar with MLMs knows what’s coming next. I was prepared to pay a bit of a markup, but the prices were insane. Cara wanted close to $30 for something I could get for $5 on Amazon. So I thanked for her reaching out and told her the oils were way out of my price range. Cara tried to tell me about how her oils were “more pure” than mine and how they have healing powers. I told her I just go to the doctor when I’m sick and I don’t need the oils for anything but making the room smell nicer. Then she got a bit nasty, told me I’m poisoning myself with my cheap oils, and said I wasn’t smart enough to see the opportunity she was presenting me with. Basic MLM stuff, and I barely know Cara so I didn’t care. The issue is this text I got from Katie yesterday. She said it was really rude of me to “lead Cara on” and make her think I was going to buy something, and that she didn’t think I was the kind of person who’d buy from a “faceless corporation” over supporting a friend who “owns her own business”. She said I didn’t need to start buying all my oils from Cara, but it was “downright disrespectful” of me to not at least try her product and see if it was better. I honestly stared at my phone for a straight minute after I read that message. But I finally sent the following reply: “I didn’t waste Cara’s time by hearing her sales pitch. I was legitimately interested in her product, until she mentioned it was six times what I normally pay. Any legitimate businessperson would understand how important pricing is to people, and would be smart enough not to back a company that charges that kind of markup. Personally, I think it’s a bit of a stretch to call Cara a business owner. I think an actual business owner would know better than to insult a potential client after they chose not to buy anything. And they certainly wouldn’t turn around and trash that potential client to mutual friends, as Cara clearly did with you.” It’s been over a day and Katie still hasn’t texted me back. She’s obviously acting like a jerk, but she really is a good friend and I don’t want this to end our friendship. Should I reach out? What should I say? Tl;dr Friend of a friend tried to sell me some essential oils at a ridiculous markup. Now my friend is mad at me. TOP COMMENTS NothappyJane You are right and you know it. Friends dont guilt their other friends into buying overpriced items from them and get mad when they dont have the budget for it. She was also pretty mean and personal about your choices. Friendship should not be conditional on that kind of support. Its supposed to be about emotional support not financial. If they cant accept that they are not really your friend anyway and they sound like they have been brainwashed by MLM. I would basically smooth it over and call her up, or keep talking to her because you have to move on at some point ~ freshicing Have her spend 10 minutes on r/antimlm and see if she still thinks highly of her friend who “owns her own business” ~ UnsureThrowaway975 Honestly, I wonder if your "friend" invited Cara along because she knew you already used essential oils and would be an easy mark. Now they're mad that you didn't play into their plan. Let your friend stew. You're right and you both should know that. If she considers you as good of a friend as you consider her, this will pass. Inquiring about the product someone is selling and then declining when its clear it doesnt fit you isn't leading them on. Its literally the whole point of working in sales. Update - rareddit Sept 29, 2018 (3 days later) This isn’t the update I wanted to be writing. A lot of you made correct predictions the other day: Katie is absolutely in Cara’s downline. She just started making Facebook posts about the essential oils she’s selling. I think this is probably the final nail in the coffin of our friendship. Which I’m sure sounds dramatic, but hear me out: Katie and I have been friends since high school, but the main thing that held us together these years was being burnouts: neither of us went to college, both of us just got shitty jobs out of high school and did nothing productive. When I was 22, I decided I was sick of making $12 an hour, and I went back to school. After three years of busting my ass, taking credit overloads, and doing evening classes after summer internships, I recently graduated with a CS degree and got a coding job with a top 10 tech company. While I was in school, I had a difficult time making friends (probably because I was older than everyone else), and I clung very hard to my high school friends like Katie. My friendship with her definitely was strained, though. She seemed to think that me bettering myself meant that I looked down on her. Things started getting really difficult when I started getting high-paying internships. They got worse when I got an extremely well-paying job right out of college and she saw what kind of apartment I was able to afford. (Katie lives in a very small apartment with a roommate). She would talk about how school had “changed” me for the worse, and how I thought I was better than her. Some of it was just her projecting insecurity, but some of it was also probably tactless behavior on my part. The truth of the matter is that I DO think Katie is capable of being better, and it frustrates me that she’d prefer to buy into a pyramid scheme than get an education. Her parents still have her college fund, and have told her that she’s welcome to it (it’s something like $100k; way more than she’d need for 2 years at a community college and 2 years at a state school) if she chooses to go back. But I guess she’d rather get rich quick hocking essential oils. Anyway...it’s pretty obvious that Cara is Katie’s mentor now. And after the smackdown I laid on Cara about what a bad businesswoman she was, and how essential oils are stupid, I’m guessing Katie is probably done with me. To her, it probably just seems like yet another example of me looking down on her. I appreciated what a lot of you said—about how friendship shouldn’t be predicated on buying things. But I think I also just need to accept that we’ve outgrown each other, and this would’ve happened soon whether she got into essential oils or not. I’m still sad, though. Tl;dr friend is selling essential oils. I think our friendship is probably over. TOP COMMENTS imaginesomethinwitty Many of these MLMs meet a lot of the criteria for cults, particularly advocating cutting off anyone who doesn’t support your ‘oily journey’ or whatever. Don’t let Katie drag you down with her. ~ Weaselpanties It sounds like it's time to distance yourself from some of your old friends. It's unfortunate, but some people really do hate it when their friends become successful. MLMs also tend to be cult-like, and brainwash people into believing that not buying product from them = undermining them. AITA for bluntly telling a woman it’s dangerous to put essential oils in sensitive areas?
My uncle’s new girlfriend came to family dinner the other night and it was the first time anyone in my family met her. She is super into essential oils which is very eyeroll inducing for me but I didn’t say anything about it or show that I found it annoying at first. I bit my tongue while she went on about putting them in her water (you should not be ingesting essential oils) and rubbing them on pressure points and trying to convince my mom to buy some. But then she brought up that they can be super good for yeast infections!!? I looked at her super horrified and asked “you mean you’re putting them down there??” And she said yes you just insert a few drops and it clears up right away! I told her this was very dangerous and could cause chemical burns as well as throwing off your vaginal ph and potentially causing other infections. She said “oh no you don’t have to worry about that they’re all natural!!” To which I replied “so is poison ivy but I wouldn’t suggest shoving it up your vagina.” She just looked kind of shocked. My sister laughed and my aunt said “well she has a point,” but other family members said that it was rude and crass. Which I didn’t think so because she’s the one who started talking about yeast infections at a family dinner certainly saying the word vagina is less crass than that. submitted by /u/throwaway7655551 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Essential Oil Diffuser: Is it worth it?
I am planning to buy an essential oil diffuser to help me relax and (hopefully) sleep better. I have just decluttered my room recently and had managed to fill up two extra large boxes with stuff I haven’t used for several years. So I am kind of hesitating to buy one now, since I have just started my minimalism journey and would just like to keep things that are essential and important in my life. Do you guys think it’s worth it? submitted by /u/unknownymousAF to r/minimalism [link] [comments]

YSK that in “essential oils,” the word “essential” is not synonymous with “important” or “necessary”
In the case of essential oils, the word essential just means that the oil contains the essence (i.e., smell) of whatever substance from which it was derived. Why YSK: if you think these oils are “essential” to your health you might be more inclined to waste your money thinking you’ll receive a medical health benefit. Not to say there aren’t benefits, but when one hears “essential!” they might think they’re necessary or important. submitted by /u/Satanic_Nightjar to r/YouShouldKnow [link] [comments]

Scientists find new evidence linking essential oils to seizures: Analyzing 350 seizure cases, researchers found that 15.7% of seizures may have been induced by inhalation, ingestion or topical use of essential oils. After stopping use of oils, the vast majority did not experience another seizure.

LPT: Add cinnamon and essential oils to a pot of water, boil on medium heat to fill your home with a festive, holiday scent and humidify the dry air.
A quick and easy way to make your home smell lovely as fuck and humidify the air during the dry, flaky skin inducing winter months. What you need: A small pot.(I don't pay attention to actual sizes, so let's just say one of those little ones that are perfect for one ramen.) Water, filtered or unfiltered- Doesn't fucking matter but fancy blogger type people will say filtered. (I fill it to about an inch and a half below the top) A few shakes of cinnamon powder. (cinnamon sticks if you wanna get fancy) As many drops of essential oil as you like. I use peppermint oil, balsam fir needle, or orange oil. If you don't have essential oils and don't want to buy any, cinnamon alone smells really great and festive as well! You can also add sliced fruit like apples or oranges if you wanna go all out. Enjoy feeling like a festive ass adult who's killin it at having your shit together and making your house smell like Christmas. submitted by /u/cummanderkeen to r/LifeProTips [link] [comments]
