Today, being a weekend I've done thorough cleaning of my house and what is remaining is adding some aromatic ambience. I was considering luxury candles but ended up settling on waterless diffusers. UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM!! Okay so I have three cats. The girl has been with me for years and the boys are from the same litter who will be 3 yrs old this May. We normally do not allow the boys in the bedroom bc they knock stuff over and poop in the room. Somehow Jack Jack snuck into our bedroom for maybe 30 mins and when we went in, there was foamy throw up in multiple places and he was foaming at the mouth. Literally dripping out and wouldn’t stop. He seemed scared of his own spit and kept running around the house so we immediately took him to the closest ER Vet. I took pictures in case I needed them but as far as I’m aware he hasn’t stopped foaming. He is a strictly indoor cat and we do not keep any food in the bedroom now but we used to keep my baby girl’s cat food in there and he is used to trying to find it to steal it so maybe he was looking for kibble?? Important info that I haven’t even been able to give to a vet/nurse while I’ve been here: he is very obsessed with food and we recently went to the vet about it because he was throwing up. He was on one prescription food and we have been switching him to another but I don’t think it’s that because the whole point of the food is to be easy to digest (hills digestive track or smth like that). Since I’ve had him (since he was 8/10 weeks - he was fixed around 3 month mark if I remember correctly) he’s had a sensitive stomach and been crazy about food so I’m worried he must’ve eaten something I just have no clue what it is. Any ideas ?? I don’t know what else to do They said min 180 just to see him, they’ve had him for over an hour and I have no clue what’s going on so im very stressed abt how much this will be and scared what’s happening to him. I just want to know he’s ok. I sent my bf home to make sure the other cats are okay and didn’t get into whatever Jack did. He was v interested but it seemed like the salivating is bothering him too much to eat so I will try again tomorrow morning. Vet said to monitor and if there are any signs of concern (still salivating/not eating/throwing up/anything else unusual) to bring him back to them for an x ray or anything else. (The vet did also mention getting x rays tonight but said it could be too early to tell so I declined knowing it would be hella expensive. If he shows any bad signs tomorrow that will probably be the next move. ) To respond to some of the questions: -If you think I overreacted, Ive taken care of many animals - especially cats - and had never seen an animal foam at the mouth like that before so I was freaked out. I also know my mischievous baby and know he could get into something serious bc he is always getting into trouble ! Now I know he might’ve just had a funny taste in his mouth lol. - We have not administered any flea/tick medicine. - no nicotine - we do not use any essential oils/diffusers in the house - vet did not mention the possibility of poison and we don’t deal w critters/fumigating often - we have an orchid in the living room but no one has showed interest in it and he wasn’t near it at the time so I don’t think it was that. Okay, I’m having a serious case of scent envy. My best friend and I have the exact same HJTHJT diffuser (I actually bought mine because hers made her place legit smell like a spa). I’ve been using lavender, eucalyptus, a couple citrus blends, nothing fancy. I like it, it smells good. But when I’m at her place, the scent just hits differently. It feels stronger and more evenly spread. At mine it’s there… just lighter. Fades quicker too. Before anyone says “just ask her”, I did. She’s basically doing the same thing as me. Throwaway and on mobile. Sry I (25f) rent an okayish apartment in a city. Its a two bedroom and one bedroom is mine, the other is an office/craft room/guest room. My little sister (20f) dropped out of college 2 weeks ago nearby (same state but out of state of our parents) to "take sometime to think" and asked if she and her partner (21nb) could move in with me until they "figure stuff out" since they no longer have on campus housing. I told her I'd love to have her temporarily and is she's here for more than the rest of the semester but she needs to either go home to our parents, find her own place, or pay rent by this summer, all things she would have had to do if she stayed in college. Her and her partner moved in and its been mostly fine, I know her living quirks since we shared a room growing up and its nice being able to hangout. The only issue is they brought a cat with them, did not know they adopted a cat but they got a cat together (which I think is irresponsible but thats besides the point). But the cat gets into everything. Food, craft supplies, bags, toiletries, etc. They did not train this cat at all and lets it walk all over the counters and eat food off of plates, which I've mostly accepted and ignored because its temporary. But this cat keeps getting into my essential oils and having to go to the vet because of it. I use essential oils, mostly for health reasons, not in like an anti vaxxer way but in a supplement to modern medicine way. I mostly use them for sleep and relaxation because I get awful nightmares and I sleep horrendously. Well my sister demanded I stop using essential oils because theyre toxic to cats and I agreed to stop putting them in the diffuser/humidifier in the living room but I'd keep running the humidifier because it's winter and dry. But I said I will not stop running the one in my room because I need the lavender to sleep and the cat shouldn't be in my room anyways. The door should be closed at almost all times. Well the cat got into my room and I guess the lavender triggered its asthma. And my sister is demanding I stop running the essential oils and I pay for its medical bills but its my apartment she's living in for free and I'm not the one letting the cat in my room, thats on her. I just received an aromatherapy diffuser as a gift and after some brief research on Google my anxiety is triggered and I'm worried. The diffuser would create oil particles whihc you shouldn't breath, and evaporating EOs release compounds which are apparently related to heart and lung problems. I have been making and occasionally using roll-on perfumes using diluted EOs in almond/jojoba oil, i haven't noticed any majoar problems but i also can't tell if there are any creeping symptons i'm not noticing (frog in the boiling pot problem). I don't have asthma, COPD, or noticeable allergic reactions or irritations to the roll-on perfumes. I don't have pets or children. So this woman on my team got really into essential oils a few months ago. At first it was harmless. She’d roll some on her wrists or temples, and no one said anything. A few of us even joked about how nice it smelled, kind of like walking into a spa. Then she brought in a small USB diffuser. She set it up on her desk and it started pumping out lavender or peppermint or whatever she was in the mood for that day. It wasn’t overpowering at first, but then the blends got stronger. Some days it honestly makes the whole corner of the office smell like some kind of hippie apothecary. The kicker is she never really asked if it was okay. It just became part of the space. A couple of coworkers have quietly moved to different desks. One guy said it was giving him a headache. Another mentioned that her eucalyptus mix made his asthma flare up. She kind of brushed it off when it came up, saying everything she uses is “pure and natural” so it couldn’t possibly cause irritation. That rubbed a few people the wrong way. She’s also started suggesting oils for people’s problems. Like if you say you’re tired, she’ll pull out some citrus blend and tell you to inhale deeply. One time someone mentioned they were feeling anxious and she basically said they should stop taking meds and try frankincense instead. That one got a few awkward looks. Last week, I invited 3 old friends from high school over for wine and appetizers—just a typical hangout. My friend “Katie” invited “Cara”. Cara went to high school with us, but I was never close with her so I wasn’t friends with her on Facebook or anything. As soon as Cara saw my diffuser, she said her side job is selling essential oils and basically starting pitching me. It was pretty obvious right away that she works for a MLM, but I honestly didn’t care. The way I saw it, since I used these oils all the time, I’d rather support someone I actually know than give my money to some company on Amazon. So I told her to shoot me a Facebook message later and we could talk about it. Anyone who’s familiar with MLMs knows what’s coming next. I was prepared to pay a bit of a markup, but the prices were insane. Cara wanted close to $30 for something I could get for $5 on Amazon. So I thanked for her reaching out and told her the oils were way out of my price range. Cara tried to tell me about how her oils were “more pure” than mine and how they have healing powers. I told her I just go to the doctor when I’m sick and I don’t need the oils for anything but making the room smell nicer. Then she got a bit nasty, told me I’m poisoning myself with my cheap oils, and said I wasn’t smart enough to see the opportunity she was presenting me with. Basic MLM stuff, and I barely know Cara so I didn’t care. The issue is this text I got from Katie yesterday. She said it was really rude of me to “lead Cara on” and make her think I was going to buy something, and that she didn’t think I was the kind of person who’d buy from a “faceless corporation” over supporting a friend who “owns her own business”. She said I didn’t need to start buying all my oils from Cara, but it was “downright disrespectful” of me to not at least try her product and see if it was better. I honestly stared at my phone for a straight minute after I read that message. But I finally sent the following reply: “I didn’t waste Cara’s time by hearing her sales pitch. My friendship with her definitely was strained, though. She seemed to think that me bettering myself meant that I looked down on her. Learned the hard way about essential oils. We had been using a reed diffuser as an air freshener, and it was sitting on the fireplace mantle next to the LEGO Pride set. So first off pretty much all the benefits are going to fall under aromatherapy. In general if you are told to apply it to a certain area of your body for any reason other than that spot will help the scent reach your nose (neck chest or wrists mainly), then it is probably lying. Oils can cause a feeling of temperature difference in which case they can help you topically (like peppermint) Aromatherapy is a scientifically supported concept. there are many studies with thousands of combined citations. Aromatherapy is basically using scents to effect your brain. The nose is the one of the 5 senses that has the most direct access to your brain and certain smells can effect your mood. Lavender has been proven to make you sleepy, Rose oil helps with anxiety, orange can help with pain relief, and many more examples are including in this guide with good sources That being said, a lot of oils being sold are pseudoscience. There are things ranging from mlm schemes to major companies that are known for not being the most clear about what their product actually does or not using quality ingredients that lead to skin irritation. Why Ysk: there are many bad products out there and when shopping around you should look at ingredients and reviews. The main ingredients should be whatever the scent is. Essential oils do not replace modern medicine. They can assist with certain issues. Research on what ailments you have and talk to your doctor about whether or not it will help you. It is completely possible a doctor may recomend this. A diffuser filled with lavender may be very beneficial for your sleep for example. You should also be aware of allergies you may have or be cautious if you have sensitive skin. You do not nescessarily need to put oils directly on your skin. There are things like lava rock beeds that are good for holding the scent but will likely still get it on your skin. Be cautious of this. Always do research on what you buy and go to a doctor first and foremost. ETA: as some comments have pointed out, these oils can also be dangerous for pets. They often are much more sensitive to smells and can get sick or even die from certain oils. Your pet should never drink any oils and if they do contact your vet immediately. I felt nauseous after being sick for a few weeks, so I went to the nurse's office. There was only one nurse there, and I was the only student there. I explained my situation, and requested that due to my athsma, she turn off her essential oil diffuser. She refused. Two more students came in, and they explained what problem they had. Both of them said that the essential oils were making it hard to breathe, and she denied that this was even possible. I believe that one of them had athsma. I was having a large amount of difficulty breathing, so I told her that this was a health and safety issue. She got angry and asked me to leave the room. She had not yet attempted to diagnose me. Is there any way I can report her?
