Fabric Paint Alternatives
I’m making my boyfriend a hoodie for Christmas and wanted to paint on it, but I don’t have any fabric paint. Fabric paint on a cotton tshirt
The paint won't wash off or peel (or rather it will do so at the regular pace a normal tshirt would lose it vibrancy). The color is controlled by how much you dilute it in water. The paint used here is only black and white. submitted by /u/Red_Walrus27 to r/crafts [link] [comments]

Ok I admit it, I need help. My fabric paint always washes out.
https://preview.redd.it/zcze4vn2lhqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62e8e838e897fae88a0724fc5250628d853f3a57 https://preview.redd.it/smoumwn2lhqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=966b8364c41d012460b0bc5783adc1a97dcf6c10 I drew these in the 90's with permanent marker. The denim jeans were originally light blue but they faded to white in the wash, so I figured what the heck, what have I got to lose. They were starting to go thin when I started the first drawing. Since then I have worn them thin, although I suspect the texta assisted that process. But I washed them every time I wore them, and minimal fading if any. So when I decided to try this again (30 years later!) I decided to use colour instead of black. (I still have these but they don't fit me anymore!) I bought some Cinos instead of denim jeans. I decided to try a few things and see what worked. I first tried coloured Sharpies and anko permanent markers. https://preview.redd.it/9qf4izy6mhqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83e60179a24fbe4eca8bbd4305c95124b3a4c457 The colour faded on the N as the pen ran dry a little, but it looked ok, so I started on the other leg. https://preview.redd.it/o2b1kvkimhqd1.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=025b20a4fc8ab81cea94c31665aac095b18ee1ad After a wash there was a small amount of bleed. Also a small amount of fade. I thought it was ok, and pressed on. https://preview.redd.it/en1czn5omhqd1.jpg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=991f3bd9881d108be698d5e372e52b64f98ce581 https://preview.redd.it/po555uqumhqd1.jpg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=893f2f8ce750fed7f0b0c81fdff4b00fae286eb2 https://preview.redd.it/xs96fs8wmhqd1.jpg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ea199d176ca8d0722f8f6880e84ed747d0dd80da I felt my work was even improving as I go, so at this point I was pretty happy. And then this happened.... https://preview.redd.it/4b3we6b2nhqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2c7ca7adeaa4f55550b147ff09ff49a9d1d5659a I realised that it was only the red that caused the problem, but it was still a problem. I ditched the permanent markers and started with fabric paint pens. https://preview.redd.it/0ed4mxddnhqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03e5c02de70ac455bf3340e63416d0811ef45b12 I don't think it looked as good, but I hoped it wouldn't bleed at least. It was definitely harder to draw with the paint pens. https://preview.redd.it/kjjcpprknhqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08106915cb908d943b671ad1fa0c7252c5fb7c07 https://preview.redd.it/b9gw5rhpnhqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4aed6a56c8070afd32918d2cd2fb2907f8bf72a1 The more practice, the better it got. And then this.. https://preview.redd.it/r7kbwb1vnhqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a9e3b6ab7a833ace3ef824a1df461e6cef55881 I think what happened here was the original pens faded so much that I did a full colour touch up with fabric pen, and perhaps that didn't mix well. It's ok, this is a trial run anyway. https://preview.redd.it/6agzj9d2ohqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=103a385bd4c5f5fe66a6d9a17d95074f2706d349 But also this: A distinct and strong loss of colour. I went and repainted some of them, improving the first attempts somewhat. https://preview.redd.it/5tzhh5edohqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f22d1c37fa5d245efd9c40dac3ed7391113ecc4 But that was the last moment in which these pants looked good. Now they're so faded you almost can't read the Iron Maiden or see any of the art. https://preview.redd.it/j6clz51ephqd1.png?width=1439&format=png&auto=webp&s=db8317617ed2026162b3557c963a046304789bf1 https://preview.redd.it/uxa63q8fphqd1.png?width=1439&format=png&auto=webp&s=37e00a04fb964e9e620ba01a31c73a445b91e930 As you can see the body colour and fine detail is just gone. I decided to try and heat press, so I started a new pair of Cinos. Fabric Paint pens. https://preview.redd.it/ibuyqplpphqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6aaf8d9edf0cc5a81cbdf5d40f120b2ce03e7fb8 This was the front, not yet washed. https://preview.redd.it/fyxdnawsphqd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9ae36f5d01430640d8a11c99298ef6398697dc5 This was the back, and was so happy with how it came out. I heatpressed at 400 degrees, thinking that the paint would dry and set, but no. These are also faded. Either my materials or my methods is wrong, and I have lost motivation to keep trial-and-error. (They take hours to paint) I need help please. How can I make my fabric paint permanent? submitted by /u/Bluebehir to r/fabricpainting [link] [comments]

Why did this fabric paint fade after washing?
The fabric paint I used wasn’t very thick so I had to paint multiple layers. I waited a couple hours between the layers however I didn’t “set” each layer with the iron (not sure if you’re supposed to do?). I waited about 12hrs between finishing and ironing, which I did for 5 minutes with a baking sheet in between the shirt and the iron. I wore the shirt immediately after, not washing it for a couple days after ironing. I used this exact same fabric paint on a similarly stretchy T-shirt and it held up a lot better in the wash. Any idea why it faded so much? Could it be the fact that I had to do multiple layers? Would appreciate any advice! Thanks so much submitted by /u/frqncisabernathy to r/punkfashion [link] [comments]

tip for painting on fabric!!!
for those of you who like to make your own patches or paint directly on the jacket, i've got tip for y'all! fabric paint can be expensive, and it's kinda crusty when it dries. instead, mix acrylic paint with an equal amount of fabric softener. when it dries, it's super soft and can stretch with the fabric! looks nicer (imo) and is cheaper. and that way you can use whatever color you want. :) submitted by /u/transmasking334 to r/BattleJackets [link] [comments]
