Tennis is the first one that comes to mind and I enjoy it more than the men’s game. Longer rallies, shorter run time, more fineness. Women’s gymnastics is better as is figure skating.

A thought I've been having with the end of the quad - for many years in the quad people frequently claimed that figure skating was dying with the lack of audiences at events, falling ISU revenue, lack of real star power drawing the public, and so on. But then Alysa won and suddenly we were all saying figure skating is back, within about a week or two of one competition. This always seemed odd to me though - if skating's old core fanbase had mostly jumped ship, is it really possible that that many people would have had their interest captured that much because of one event? In order for it to have that much impact people had to still care about figure skating in the first place, for example there would probably not be this kind of a public sensation if there'd been a US win in many other sports. I find it hard to believe that if the fans had truly gone that there would be this many people to care strongly about a skating medal, within such a short timespan of the event. So now I'm wondering, was this claimed dying era of figure skating ever really a thing? Or were the fans always still there, and they just stepped back and became a sort of silent majority until the win they'd been waiting for came along? Another idea I've thought as well, could it be the public actually really loves the sport when it's put in front of them but doesn't care to pay attention to it? Alysa Liu’s approach clearly works for her, but it can feel off putting when she describes not caring and just having fun while still winning competitions. For many athletes, elite sport requires discipline and structure, even if it isn’t always enjoyable. Different athletes also have different motivations and responsibilities, for some, like those from more demanding backgrounds, their careers carry added pressure to support their families, so their approach is often more serious and driven by necessity. I think it’s important not to dismiss or judge Alysa’s perspective, as she isn’t saying anything negative, she’s simply sharing her own lived experience. So, historically I've never followed the Winter Olympics because it's never been my cup of tea but now that I live in the snowy mountains and have picked up some of these sports, I've decided to watch. All I can say is wow, interesting as hell (can we talk about the drama and suspense of short track mixed team relay?!). I come asking because I'm following figure skating and I'm seeing there's all kind of controversies going on. I hear rumors that there are anti-LGBT rhetoic or comments by the world champ (Malinin and his supposed doubling down on not being homophobic by doing gay tokenism, supposedly his teammate Alysa Liu saying he's always been that way according to that sub), allegations of such with Torgashev, and SA controversy for France's team that won gold medal. Yikes, in a sport that I and many others have seen as diverse and welcoming. The SA allegations I understand, could use a break down though. Can someone give me a quick rundown on the other two with actual reporting? Thank you. I know what you’re thinking. Reddit user, we all know that the Flip is the most boring jump, everyone who watches figure skating knows that. Well some people might be new. Some people might be ice dancers. Some people will be watching for the Olympics only. They all must know why the Flip absolutely sucks. So I will attempt to explain why the flip jump is the worst jump in figure skating. First let's talk about the history of the flip jump (the Flip will be referred to as the flip, it does not deserve capitalization). The flip was first landed by Luxembourger skater Wolfe­schlegel­stein­hausen­berger­dorff Von Flip in 1909. WRONG. No one knows who first created the flip. We assume it was created by the guy who created the toe loop. But out of the 6 it's the only one where it's origin is fuzzy. Even the rest of it's history sucks. First man to land a triple flip, N/A according to Wikipedia. What do you mean N/A? Does the triple flip not exist? Did it just appear out of nowhere? Truly proof no one really cares about the flip. As for the women? Two women on wiki get the credit. Why? A skim of both of their wikis didn’t give me answers. My only assumption is that the credit of first skater to land a 3F is so un-prestigious they don’t care who gets the credit. I sure don’t. Even the name is un-prestigious. flip. That's not a figure skating jump name. I tell my friends i'm doing a 1F and they think i'm doing a backflip or butterfly twist but then it's just a single flip. Disappointment. And compared to other figure skating jumps with actual names it seems so out of place. flip does not give you the sense of feeling the other jumps do. Axel, goes hard. Lutz even harder. flip? Nah who cares. How is the WALLEY a jump that meets all of this criteria and it's NOT EVEN A REAL JUMP? At least it accurately starts with F. F for FAILURE OF A FIGURE SKATING JUMP. Watching flips is so so boring compared to the other jumps. Every other jump brings something to the table. The Axel is the only forward facing jump and is the hardest. There is something incredible about watching skaters land axels. Even in an era of triple and quad axels, you still can always appreciate a good double axel. The Lutz is the only counter rotation jump of the six. There is something about that deep outside edge that is one of the most satisfying things to watch in skating. The Loop is one of the smoothest jumps in skating. Often as the last jump in either the first or last set of jumping passes there's nothing more satisfying then watching that last clean loop after a clean set of jumps. Like a cherry on top. It's also one of 2 jumps that can be part of the second half of a jump combo and you can land a single on the other foot for an eular. The Salchow is definitely the highest of high or lowest of low jumps in skating. Will the skater land it? Or will they succumb to it. Truly the Salchow has claimed a surprising many lives and points. But that's a part of what makes it so interesting. Despite being an ‘easier’ jump you can still never relax when watching it. The Toeloop is the easiest jump and you think that would make it the most basic but it's actually the opposite. It being the easiest jump means it's the jump you're gonna see the most quads out of. And maybe the first quint we’ll see?!?!?! That makes it so interesting. Additionally it's the other jump you’ll see as the second part of a combo. What does the flip have going for it? It's not really suspenseful or interesting. It's not smooth or satisfying to watch. It can't be the second part of a combo, it's not often used with an euler and when it is it looks uglier then a salchow. I mean the mechanics aren’t interesting. You enter the jump with ohhh a 3 turn… How interesting. And you get on the initial edge by a slight toe push. YOU”RE NOT SUPPOSED TO TOE PUSH WHY DOES THE fLIP ASK FOR INCORRECT TECHNIQUE. Are there any fun and creative entries skaters could do for the flip? The other jumps have: Axel: twizzles, counter, ina bauer, spread eagle Loop: counter, 3 turns, spread eagle, deep outside edge Lutz: deep outside edge, choctaw Toeloop: Axel, Lutz, Loop, Flip, Salchow, spread eagle, lunge, quad, Salchow: spread eagle, double 3s, Flip: spread eagle, ??????? Wow a spread eagle. How original. That's so interesting and unique. Really making me interested in this jump. And you're telling me the edge is supposed to be a shallow edge? Basically flat and straight???? I'm sorry what sport is this? The edge jumps require a deep edge for take off. The lutz requires a deep edge. I suppose the Toe Loop doesn't need a deep edge but it's also not supposed to be basically flat. And if you do go on a deep edge for a flip you end up pre-rotating like crazy. What kind of sick person decided a toe push into a flat edge would constitute correct technique for a figure skating jump? If i was an ice dancer and i saw a flip i would throw up. Thats not even mentioning blade assist takeoffs. Like bruh just do a loop at that point. And when you're watching skaters is anyone even watching for flip jumps? Like what skater is known for their flip? All the other jumps have tons of skaters known for them. Salchow: Yuzuru Hanyu, Yuma Kagiama Loop: Yuzuru Hanyu, Kaori Sakamoto Lutz: Yuzuru Hanyu, Boyang Jin, Nathan Chen, Ilia Malinin, Yuna Kim, Gracie Gold Axel: Yuzuru Hanyu, Kaori Sakamoto, Han Yan, Mao Asada, Ilia Malinin Toe Loop: literally everyone including Yuzuru Hanyu Flip: ?????????????? (not even Yuzuru Hanyu) I'm sorry but if not even the Greatest Skater Of All Time cared enough to attempt you as a quad or wasn’t exactly known for you as a jump do you even count? I know what you're thinking. “But Kaori” “But Shoma” “But Nathan” “But Ilia” they all have nice flips. MISLEADING Who is watching for their flips. NO ONE. Everyone is watching Kaori for her 2A and 3Lo. Although i love Shoma, he was often criticized for having heavy prerotation along with heavy blade assistance. That along with his 4Lo means he was a LOOP JUMPER not a flip jumper. Nathan jumped 2 flips in his Olympic free skate and it Tarnished his legacy. Firstly does anyone even remember that he did 2 4Fs? No. Does everyone remember the 4Lz landed perfectly on the music right as he goes into the step sequence? Yes, yes they do. Of course they do because it was a perfect 4Lz perfectly to the music. Honestly if he had put a 4F there he probably wouldn’t have won gold. And because he put 2 Fs in rather than 2 Lz people FORGOT about him. Literally 5 seconds into retirement the QUAD KING was pushed aside for Quadg0d. Instantly people were saying Ilia was the greatest technician of all time. Why, why would they think that right after the QUAD KING had JUST won OLYMPIC GOLD with a WORLD RECORD SHORT and a 332 point score that Ilia barely beat ONCE (twice as of me actually posting this). And the answer is because Ilia repeats the 4Lz twice rather then the 4F. If Nathan had just done 2 4Lz rather then 2 4F people wouldn’t have forgotten about him. People would be saying ‘yea this Ilia kid is good, but hes no Nathan Chen 2 4Lz at the Olympics good, not yet.’ But alas he did not, and Ilia’s 2 4Lz has made fans recognise him as the one and only true Quad-something. Speaking of, he is also someone you might think could be known for his flip. Wrong. Who watches him for the flip? Again no one. You’re watching his 7 quad free and he first jumps the 4F and you think to yourself “Thank the Quad G0ds that ugly abomination is out of the way, now we can get to the 4 AXEL and 4 LUTZ and the QUAD LOOP”. ‘What about his 4Lz+1Eu+ I don't give a shit. Are you really trying to justify the flip’s existence by saying there's a skater who does a +3F in a program with 7 quads. If he dropped the +3F no one could care. People would probably praise him for it. The people hate +3F. Ekateria Kurakova was doing a 3Lz+1Eu+3F and everyone was criticizing her for it saying she should drop the +3F. So i don't want to hear any double standards. I don't care if they’re 2 completely different skaters with completely different predicaments and strengths. Ilia should drop the +3F and replace it with a 3Lo. You ALL know it would look better too. Not even Ilia can save the flip. And when you’re watching skaters the flip is simply an inferior jump compared to the lutz. A skater who can do both well will be remembered as a lutz jumper. Of skaters who can't do both well it is simply preferable to have a good lutz rather than flip. Not just points wise, fans gravitate to skaters that have clean lutzes and skaters who don't are often constantly criticized compated to skaters with iffy flip edges. Fans instinctively don't care about flips even if they don’t know it. Thank you to anyone who read the FACTUALLY CORRECT essay on why the flip is the WORSE FIGURE SKATING JUMP. I would now like to start a petition to replace the flip with the Toe Wally and give skaters a mandatory 1 point deduction for flip jump attempts.
