I (22 F) have been playing DnD with this group for almost two years now. We just finished a rough campaign where my character, the secret traitor of the group betrayed our group for an evil goverment organization, with the other player's characters ending up getting experimented on by my character, who was a doctor/scientist. After that was over the same DM (24 M) wanted to dm again, but in the same world and setting (post apocalyptic fictional island riddled with undead and mutants) just with new characters. Now, to give more context in the last campaign I was the only woman, not to mention I made my character be a plus size lady. That earned me a whole lot of sexistic and fatphobic jokes which I tried to laugh along with while lowkey dying inside. Anyway, since I didn't feel comfortable playing a guy just to fit in, I decided to make a nonbinary character. I already drafted up their design. They're a somewhat femme presenting person with no real focus on sexuality or gender (Again, the setting is post apocalypse, ain't noone tryna look like the Tomb Raider). So I send my draft to the dm with a picture of the character and just the summary of the class and the fun fact about them being non-binary. His first response is "Bruh" before adding "Why not make things complicated?" I was confused, thinking he didn't like my choice of a class, which ig fair, we still needed a medic and leader, but given that I was the medic last campaign, I didn't want a repeat. So I asked what exactly was complicated and what could be complicated about a non-binary character. I just saw it as a shift in grammar and not just being seen as "The girl" of the group. His response about the issue is "How to reffer to you? How will the others react to you?" Which is annoyingly vague and leaves me wondering if he was reffering to the other players or the NPC's. I gave him my suggestions to how NPC's could call out to my character and then he goes "Right, but then one will go 'That lady' and your character will loose it and go on a rant about misgendering and not identifying as female." The whole interaction overall left me feeling bitter about the whole thing. I just wanted to step out of my comfort zone in roleplay while also giving myself more of a chance to blend in with the group. But now I'm second guessing everything. I don't want to back down so easily at the first pushback, but I also don't want to make it a whole annoying thing. But at the same time it really sucks that the last message he sent is "Like I told the others, ok, go ahead, but control yourself" which I have no idea how to interpret. Story time - was at brunch with my girlfriend when a guy started talking to us from a neighbouring table. Convo was casual but could definitely tell he was more interested with us than his family. A waitress seeing him literally starting to third wheel our date asked if we’d like to move. Being polite we decided to stay where we were seated. When we went to leave he followed us out, knowing it’s an awkward and sensitive question he asked if I was trans. For context he did ask with sincerity and preface that he has a trans daughter. Wanting to be polite/helpful I said yes and got to talking about his daughter and whether Australia was a safe inclusive space to live. The conversation went fast but by the end I was left with no confidence. For the last year I’ve felt like I’ve passed up until now. For context, all of his children are lgbt so maybe he just has a really good sense for it, picking up on something I never saw. I am lesbian, and definitely don’t fit within the hyper femme box. I’m imagining my tattoos could have given something away but I don’t know. I’m just at a loss. So, r/196 has remained one of, if not the only chaos subreddit to not fall into bigotry and general cesspitdom, primary because the moderators actually bother to enforce the Reddit TOS as the bare minimum requirement. This doesn't mean the subreddit is without flaw, it has this very obnoxious, horny, leftish, vaguely bisexual tone to it all that seems more mocked than celebrated these days, but it's still a place to freely shitpost. It's been going for 4 years strong with over 500k members. Bears, deletion, and the drama thereof At a little after 11PM on the 6th, user ras0003 made a post entitled All the femme people are posting thirst traps, so fuck it, the people get a bear thirst trap too. It's a photo of a bear, who, for those here who are straight, refers to a large, hairy, homosexual man. This might seem a little beyond the pale for most people, but trust me, people on r/196 had been posting shirtless pics for years, just broadly without the chest hair. It was not particularly well-liked by the overall community, but it was tolerated as the mods would ban any explicit porn. About 12 hours after that, the exact timing is not clear, the post was removed, and the user was banned from the subreddit. Because the post gained a little over 700 upvotes prior to its deletion, this fact was very quickly noticed by user profanearcane, who made a post entitled literuley 1984 with an image of the post and the deletion annoucement. This post was significantly more successful than the one removed, gaining over 8 thousand upvotes at the time of its deletion. The subreddit was in a near-universal agreement that the post was ill-removed, and if the mods had a good reason for it, they should outright say their reasoning. Body wasn't femme or youthful enough for them. As someone else pointed out its twink or woman are whats celebrated. Lookism in queer communities is only quieter and even then only sometimes. Okay hold on that guy actually made me feel validated that people found him attractive. I'm actually upset. That's fucking horseshit um did the mods explain why they removed it? that is kind of fucked up that they let all these other suggestive photos stay but ban this one (In Reply) You see, the other ones made them horny and the posters were skinny. Taking the fujoshi 196 mod to a gay bar but it's bear night and they start throwing up and crying. Posting avalanche With absolutely zero moderational insight into why the decision was made, the only way r/196 users found to deal with the problem is to start making their own posts about the drama. I won't bore you with the details, because 90% of them are just more posts complaining about the deletion reasoning or bears posting their own thirst traps. I would like to highlight, however Bear Full Spreading (NSFW), because it made me laugh. This is what you would've noticed if you logged onto r/196 last night, about 25% normal posts, 25% people complaining about the mods, and 50% gay men posting thrist traps. But, of course, you can log into it right now, and you might notice that it's almost 100% normal shitposts. Oh boy, things just got a lot stupider. Where the story should've ended In a normal world, the mods would put out a pretty bad statement on the issue that'd get downvoted into oblivion, they'd enforce whatever new policy they had like normal, and the subreddit would settle down. It wasn't like bears ever were the main subject of the subreddit, if you weren't there for it, it's like it never even happened. Instead, the decision by the moderators (or perhaps, moderator singular, it's unclear how many people are actually involved in doing this) was to delete every single post discussing the issue and burying it as much as possible. This includes the thirst traps, the posts complaining about the removal, any posts mentioning bears whatsoever, including the animal bear, and as of writing this post the mods are still very active in doing so. Decent drama posts on the mass removal are hard to find, for obvious reasons, but there does happen to be exactly one post which managed to slip through the cracks. When I saw the banned post, I immediately jumped to a conclusion that I don't see anyone here talking about, but it makes sense if you consider how many autists there are that struggle with the gap between written and unwritten rules...The mods have to balance the sub turning into (even more of a) porn sub than it already is vs backlash of people taking the "plausible deniability" side, which is a particularly volatile mix on a trans-focused sub. Normally, deleting a post that explicitly calls itself a thirst trap is a no-brainer. Turns out, this time, it was a bear trap, and it sprung shut. (In reply) That explanation has stopped working whatsoever given that as of me making this comment the mods have been going on an unreasonable purge of not just all the tummy posts made in response to the mods banning that one (even though none called themselves thirst traps), but also every meme and completely sfw post made criticizing the mods' behaviour. If you can look at that and tell me the mods aren't just silencing people for arbitrary double-standards given that fem thirst traps still face no repercussions, I don't know what to tell you. Addendum So, this section was supposed to be a stupid conclusion about Grizzly Bear (the band)) because I had nothing better to end it with, but there is actually a bit more information I learned at the last minute when putting this together. When viewing the many new bearposts to see if any of them have anything interesting to say, I found this comment that seems to indicate that the mods are drafting some sort of response: The moderators are currently "in discussion" about it, according to a reply to my message to them. Apparently they're removing all posts that are "encouraging spam" whilst they come up with a response. Whatever that means. Personally I'm not holding my breath as they're also claiming the post was accidentally taken down despite the guy being banned for 1 day. I'm not sure how you do that accidentally. Is this user lying out of their ass? Possibly. Is it the closest we've gotten to an actual, official response from the moderators though? Sure is. Update: Mods responses never fix anything So, the mods made an official response. Read it and weep. We recently removed a thirst-trap post that was on the edge of what we'd typically allow and gave the user a small (one day) ban. This action has received a lot of attention and has been interpreted as the mods having bias against masc presenting body shapes. I want to say this is absolutely not the case and we remove thirst-traps that are too risqué regardless of body-shape. Since the post was borderline and due to the public outcry we have restored the post and unbanned the user early (again it was a one day temp ban). Going forward we will be deleting any post that solely serves as a callout against the mod team on this issue. The memes and bear pics will stay up. Why is everyone (on Twitter at-least) complaining about this look and saying it’s not Buffy? This seems like the natural progression of Buffy’s style.. She’s always been feminine even when patrolling she legit wanted to be a figure skater. When she got more serious and badass as she grew into her slaying years with that was the leather faze but growing into a femme power woman like this is where she was going without slaying anymore this is the today’s version of a 90’s power woman like this to me is Buffy and I’m so glad she got to evolve into the woman she wanted to be. Called her ungrateful, mean, etc. any and every reason to make her this witch. The biggest reason being that she’s living in Lucille’s house and Lucille is paying for her wedding, both things that Joan has made no secret she does not want. Imagine, if you will, that you are in this new country with this completely alien culture. You’re not in your own space. Your partner is totally unmotivated to do anything. He has a codependent relationship with his mother where you can’t even kiss him goodbye at the door for his first day of scho-, I mean work without her forcing herself into the moment. She’ insists on paying for the wedding, and you can assume she’ll be very… generous with her opinions on what should be offered for the food and decor. Your family will not be able to attend any any possible fantasies you had about what your wedding will look like are likely not to come to past. But you have your dress. And you have the ability to share in the moment with your family in the best way you can. Maybe you fret about allowing your future mother-in-law to come, but then you will be guarded. You won’t be able to be as honest about how difficult it is to be marrying and living under the circumstances because you don’t want to be ungrateful to her generosity. It doesn’t make it easy though. You don’t want to have your sadness dismissed uncomfortably by people with good intentions saying “it’s okay, we’re your family now.” You want to be able to mourn with your family their not being able to take part in what is one of the most important days of your life and just exist outside of the vacuum you’ve been in since you landed in the US. I'm not sure if "Rotten Onion" is a term that anyone uses, but I'm going to coin it right now, because I've been playing through Cyberpunk recently and after going through the initial Judy quests, I cannot think of a more fitting description for this character. What do I mean by that? Well, Ogres, as you may have been told, are like an onion, they have layers. Evelyn Parker has layers too. The problem is that each time you peel them back you see more and more clearly just how rotten the entire onion is. And funny enough, perhaps the funniest thing of all, is just how utterly perfectly this and everything else about her and the way her life collides with V's matches with the quote from the old E3 trailer- "This city's always got a promise for you... might be a lie, an illusion, but it's there." When Evelyn first comes to V she comes through DeShawn, someone recommended extremely highly by Jackie and someone who's working out of the Afterlife. This is, without a question, the big leagues. And it quickly gets bigger as the details of the job unfold. Before you know it, you're watching a video playing from her own secret recording meeting with Yorinobu Arasaka himself. Unbeknownst to him, not only is she spying on all the layout and security details of his penthouse, but she's also ferreting out the location for the ultra top-secret biochip that contains Arasaka's most prized technology. She's arranging a job to hit one of the biggest names in the biggest corporation in the world to steal a piece of technology that's utterly priceless. It's a breathtakingly daring job, the biggest of the big leagues. Everything about Evelyn is mysterious and secretive. She holds her cards extremely close to her chest, almost anything you question her about gets deflected. You don't need to know why she wants the chip, you don't need to know what she's going to do with it. It's extremely important for her, and she's going to make you rich beyond counting if you get it. From her presentation, it all seems to add up. She looks, dresses and acts extremely high class. We see video proof that she's connected to the heir apparent to Arasaka, one of the most powerful men in the entire world. And she's fully knowledgeable about an ultra top-secret biochip that goes beyond even the Relic technology Arasaka has been teasing the markets with. Clearly, there's a lot she's not telling V. What does she want with this Relic? Well, we know that Jonny Silverhand is on it, so we can only assume she's got some kind of deeply personal connection to him, or she's connected to someone that does. For some reason, Evelyn doesn't want Arasaka to have Jonny, she wants him. Why is that? We don't know, we can only speculate in the darkness. Whether she's working by herself or with others, Evelyn is clearly an extremely wealthy, well connected woman. Someone connected to extremely powerful people, and someone to whom a job this audacious is not just imaginable, but possible. There's only one strange piece that stands out... If she's this well connected, and able to move the ungodly amount of funds this Relic is worth, along with her promises that V and everyone else will be set for life afterwards... Why is she working with V's crew? V's made a name for himself, but he's hardly Morgan Blackhand. He's only been a merc for ~6months or so. Still, rather than a real question, that comes across as a gameplay contrivance, she's working with you because that way you get to be the one doing this story. And anyway, she wasn't the one that hired you, she's linked to DeShawn, one of the biggest Fixers in the game (although... not the biggest...) and he was the one that brought you in. If you're strangely unqualified for this kind of job, that doesn't reflect on Evelyn. And so, that's the beautiful, alluring and mysterious outer layers of this onion. Evelyn is an enigmatic, powerful, and ambitious woman, with a lot of money, connected to extremely important people with even more money, and she's come to DeShawn, to V and to Jackie and T-Bug with a promise... and, because of that, every one of them gets killed. Of course, not even that reflects that badly on Evelyn. The job went badly due to bad timing and bad luck, it was always an extremely high risk job, that's just how things go and none of it was her fault. So, as I finished up the Heist, as I went through Act, and as I went through all of the various Gigs around Night City and through all of Panam's quest, that was my impression of Evelyn. And then, I started Judy's quests... and... very quickly, things started to unravel. More and more layers came off that onion, and with each layer that was removed, an almost choking, rotten smell began to pour out! First, you meet up with Judy and press her for details about Evelyn, where she's gone, where she's up to... And surprisingly, you're told that Evelyn is a Doll, and she works at the Clouds. Not an auspicious start, and even less auspicious as I learned exactly what a Doll is and what the Clouds is. The beautiful, mysterious and powerful lady you met in the intro is essentially a high-tech prostitute, with a cyber-chip that essentially wipes her mind during every session so she can be whatever the client wants. That wasn't at all what I expected, but then, that's only the first layer, it doesn't break the facade too much. From it's appearance and profile on the Net, Clouds seems to be a very high class and sophisticated service. Less a brothel, more a high class escort service, the Dolls aren't just for sex, they're for companionship, similar to a Geisha. That makes sense, and that explains why she would be linked to Yorinobu, she's a high class escort that serves the most elite of the elite. Except, not really. When you arrive, it's clear that Clouds isn't situated in some high market and nice part of Night City, it's just another part of another slumhole. And nor is it a particularly glamorous organisation, the whole place is teeming with Tiger Claw thugs, the bosses of this "elite" service are nothing more than gangoons selling customer details to Arasaka on the side. Talking to the other Dolls there, and even the boss, makes this more clear. Dolls getting attacked and beaten is an occupational hazard, and if they're severely damaged then the Boss will either "recycle them" or offload them to a slimy, shitbag RipperDoc called "Fingers" for all the most predictable reasons. From there, we begin the desperate hunt for Evelyn, from the heights of the Clouds, to the lower levels of Jig Jig street, and all the way to where she's been captured, brutalised and tortured by the Scavs for XBDs. And finally, as we go through this and as we finally rescue her, the layers of the onion come off completely and the full truth slowly falls out, as rotten and ugly as anything in Night City. Evelyn, of course, isn't a super elite woman connected to the most powerful men in the world. She's a prostitute at a brothel that happened to be favoured by one specific ultra powerful man. She doesn't have some deep connection to Jonny Silverhand, nor is she working with someone who does. In fact, she's not even working for anyone on this job, it's completely her own merits. And not in a good way. And, ultimately, she doesn't even seem to have any specific way to turn the Relic into money. She promised everyone that it would make them all rich beyond their wildest dreams, she promised "Just give it to me, I'll do the rest", and now we see that she was connected to the Voodoo Boys by a very thin connection and they absolutely didn't want her to even know about it (her mentioning it to them maybe sealed her fate, but then maybe they would have tied up that loose end anyway). So, in the end, this enigmatic, powerful woman who hobnobbed with the ultra-elite of the world was just a random hooker who learned about an incredibly valuable item and hired you to steal it before the Voodoo Boys got a chance to do so. Her entire plan was just to klep it under their noses, and what? Sell it to them? Do Gangoons even have that much money? Or was she planning to sell it to another Corp? Or maybe she would just blackmail Arasaka to hand it back? None of those plans seem very good and almost all of them seem like they end with her getting flatlined without a single eddy. And, of course, that answers the question of why she tried to cut DeShawn out of the deal at the start of the game. A question that previously made no sense is now given stark contrast... Why did she want to cut him out? Because she's slimy and she's cheap. After rescuing Evelyn and after going through the memories Judy extracts from her, I actually had to sit for a bit and just fully process everything about her, because it was just such an absolutely stunning revelation and it was so utterly perfect for Night City. That woman right there is everything Night City and Cyberpunk 2077. Just like her heist, Evelyn is a promise. She's the promise of a mysterious, powerful and well connected woman who knows a great deal about this ultra-secret technology and has her own plans for it, plans that involve other well connected people and an enormous amount of money. And, just like everything else, that promise is a lie, an illusion. Evelyn Parker is just a prostitute who arranged a desperate, reckless gig with very little chance of payout and even less of a chance of everyone all living happily retired on the infinite wealth she assured us we would earn as a reward. Honestly, it was almost surreal watching just how meekly and submissively she talked to her contact with the Voodoo Boys in the recording. And even more so, reading the casual and slimy tone of the emails saved on Judy's computer. I can't substantiate this at all, but from looking through them, I got the distinct impression that Judy likes Evelyn a lot more than Evelyn likes Judy, and that Judy has been used by her in the past. It was almost a cliche, Evelyn contacts Judy for the first time in however long, first to dangle the idea of a potential romance before her, and then to ask her for a favour. It was wonderfully manipulative and disgustingly slimy. I loved it. What a terrible woman and what a perfect character, emblematic of the entire game. She's like an onion, she's got layers, but damn, when you peel them off, you've stunk up the whole room with that rot! I don't like her at all, but she's absolutely one of my favourite characters so far. A fantastic, fantastic little experience within the game. In this letter, you claim “as Snoos, we do not tolerate hate, racism, and violence, and while we have work to do to fight these on our platform, our values are clear.” As of today, neither you nor any other Reddit admins have shared this letter anywhere on reddit.com. However, the response to this message was swift on Twitter, where you were rightfully labeled as hypocritical based on your long and well-recorded history of defending racism and white supremacy on this site. Among the many responses was this message from former CEO of Reddit, Ellen Pao. I am obligated to call you out: You should have shut down the_donald instead of amplifying it and its hate, racism, and violence. So much of what is happening now lies at your feet. You don't get to say BLM when reddit nurtures and monetizes white supremacy and hate all day long Many others shared links and screenshots of your past statements saying “Open racism and slurs are fine to post on Reddit”. The problem of Reddit’s leadership supporting and providing a platform for racist users and hateful communities has long been an issue. Nearly six years ago, dozens of subreddits signed the original open letter to the Reddit admins calling for action. While the Reddit admins acknowledged the letter and said it was a high priority to address this issue, extremely little has been done in the intervening years. On June 5, you shared this update on /r/Announcements, Upcoming changes to our content policy, our board, and where we’re going from here. In the post, you stated that there is a need for continued adjustments of Reddit’s content policy to address racism and that this remains a priority. These continued statements that you hear us, that this is a priority, or that you are working on it are not enough. It has been five years since your return as CEO and this still remains Reddit’s most glaring problem. Steve, if you and Reddit genuinely care about the values of standing up to racism and hate, then you need to back it up with real action. As moderators on this website who have dedicated countless hours to keeping this site running, we call on Reddit to take the following steps: Enact a sitewide policy against racism, slurs, and hatespeech targeted at protected groups. For too many years, Steve Huffman and the other Admins have stood by and allowed this site to fester with hate in the name of “free speech.” It is time to enact a specific and detailed policy that protects the disadvantaged members of our communities from hate based on their sexuality, gender identity, ethnicity, country of origin, religion, or disability. Reddit needs to hire more community managers According to Reddit's job listings there are dozens of open positions that the company is hiring for, and yet not a single one for Community. Reddit has enacted numerous policies over the years that have been detrimental to the ability of Reddit’s moderators or the broader Reddit community. Reddit needs more community managers to build positive relations and engagement with the site’s volunteer moderators. Honor Alexis Ohanian's wishes to have his Reddit Board seat filled with a black candidate - On June 5, Reddit Co-Founder and Executive Chairman announced that he would be stepping down from his role on Reddit's Board of Directors. Alexis requested that his position be filled with a black candidate and we ask Reddit to honor that request. While you have stated your intent to honor that request, we are asking for an announcement to be made on this decision in the next 3 months. We believe this is not an issue that should be put off for action years down the road.
