I work in a small tech hub where the office layout is basically one giant room with zero partitions. Usually I dont mind it because the vibes are good and it makes collaboration easier but for the last few months I have been stuck sitting next to a guy who has decided that deodorant is a conspiracy against his skin microbiome. He is a decent enough developer but he is a firm believer in the "natural human scent" theory and it is starting to affect my physical health. It is not just a faint musk or something you notice if you get too close. It is a heavy persistent cloud of sour sweat and stale laundry that seems to have its own gravitational pull. I tried to ignore it for a while because I didnt want to be the office jerk who complains about personal stuff but the weather is getting warmer and the air conditioning in our building is mediocre at best. By two in the afternoon the air around my desk feels thick and I find myself holding my breath during standup meetings just to avoid the direct hit. I actually looked up our corporate handbook to see if there was a clause about professional grooming or basic hygiene but it is all very vague about "respecting colleagues". I tried the subtle approach first like keeping a small desk fan pointed directly at him to push the smell away but he just thought I was being considerate because the office is warm and he thanked me for the breeze. I even left a brand new stick of unscented high quality deodorant on his desk with a note saying "found this in the breakroom maybe it is yours" but he just laughed and tossed it in the trash bin saying he doesnt use chemicals. The worst part is that other people are starting to notice and they just make jokes about it behind his back but nobody wants to be the one to actually say it to his face. I feel like I am being held hostage by his philosophy on bacteria. I am considering asking for a desk transfer to the other side of the building near the server room because at least the ozone smell is sterile. I dont want to go to hr because that feels like a nuclear option for something that should be common sense but my nose is basically on strike at this point . I am not even asking for him to smell like a flower shop I just want him to smell like nothing. Is it really that much of a stretch to expect people to use soap and a basic antiperspirant when they are crammed into a room with twenty other humans for eight hours a day. I am currently writing this while wearing a face mask and pretending I have a cold just so I can put some eucalyptus oil inside the fabric to mask the situation. This floats my boat! Everything could stay as it is! Even the darn red carpet - it suits the space perfectly. Love the uniqueness of this place. Plus almost 7 acres of amazing outdoors. Sure, this and that could be updated, but it's in great shape and functional, and doesn't bother me. Not even the dreaded spiral stairs in the center, because there are other stairs as well. I wonder about the two levels on the tower and the rooms there. Not sure which pictures are showing them. I guess picture 18 that shows sort of loft? Another question is the internal glass window above the master bed. Why it's there and what's behind?
