Easy foraging toy for elderly rat?
Hey yall! I have an elderly rat named Tuxedo. He is 3 years old, and his back legs don’t work very good anymore. He is alone (his siblings passed), but he spends a lot of time with us and is very happy. He’s typically very energized and excited about life lol. I think he’s probably the happiest rat I’ve ever owned, and we don’t intend on getting more rats after he passes for a year or two (to give ourselves a break from the heartbreak of losing them). So that is why he’s alone for now but gets lots of attention from us and from all of his “friends” who come to visit (our friends and family love him and smother him with attention too). Anyway- given that he is alone in his cage and not physically the most capable anymore, I’m looking for ideas on foraging toys or enrichment toys that would be easy for him to do. He LOVES food (obviously from the photo 😬). Anyone have any ideas on good, easy (for him) foraging or enrichment activities for aging rats? submitted by /u/Phukamol to r/RATS [link] [comments]

Thought I was foraging on public land for years turns out it was private property
So this is a bit embarrassing: I’ve been foraging in this patch of woods for over 3 years now. It’s quiet, full of wild garlic, berries and the occasional mushroom jackpot. Always assumed it was unused public land never saw a fence, no signs, nothing. Well yesterday the owners showed up. Apparently they’ve been watching me on security cameras for a while. I panicked, ready to apologize and get chewed out but they were actually super chill. Even said they liked how careful I am that I always leave no trace and don’t take too much. They basically invited me to keep coming. Told me most trespassers don’t even know what plants are edible they just hunt or litter. Earlier while i was scrolling on my phone I kept thinking about it: how even with foraging, consent matters. I lucked out that the owner was cool but not everyone would be. Lesson learned: land isn’t always what it seems. Ask permission when you can. submitted by /u/Mindless-Smoke9520 to r/foraging [link] [comments]

Got sick from foraged prickly pears :(
Some friends and I are on vacation in north carolina, and we saw a ton of ripe prickly pears by the side of the road. We decided it would be fun to juice them and make prickly pear margaritas. We burned off the spines then boiled them for 20 minutes before juicing them using a strainer and coffee filters. Honestly they didn't taste like much but had a beautiful color, the juice itself definitely had a beet-like/root vegetable flavor. But 3 of the 4 of us ended up having really awful symptoms around 6 AM - waking up every hour with headaches, body aches, skin-sensitivity, and otherwise feeling feverish. One of us threw up and is still pretty nauseous as well. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Could it be the fruit? Potential herbicides or pesticides? Road exhaust? submitted by /u/chasingthestarfish to r/foraging [link] [comments]

I wanted to get into foraging. Do you follow hiking trails, walk a little ways off, or walk straight into a deep forest?
The title is pretty self-explanatory. Do people really just walk straight into a forest when foraging and are able to find their way out? Don't you ever get lost? Or do you use navigational tools? I don't have lots of connections, so I doubt I could find a foraging buddy to show me the ropes. I was planning on starting off by identifying plants along a hiking trip with a field guide, but what would I do after getting the hang of that? submitted by /u/Novel_Art_3663 to r/foraging [link] [comments]

Is foraging profitable
So I recently “maxed” out my forging setup with the exception of perfect gemstones and jade drag(using ocelot for wisdom) and I was wondering does foraging actually make money cuz to make good rates like 300+ sweep and 700+ foraging fortune it costs quite a bit of an investment from the amend to the equipment and then ofcouse shards. Foraging Scythe I Made For My Wife!
Here’s something I’ve NEVER done before! It’s a tiny little scythe for foraging! I made it for her for Christmas! She wanted one so I stepped up! It’s not often she asks for something sharp so I was extremely excited to make it!!! It’s always nice when we get to impress with our craft 🤣 the middle segment is actually dyed and stabilized brain coral!!! Never used it before. Someone gave it to me 5-6 years ago and I just used it now! •3/16 1095 high carbon steel. •Black G10, Brain coral, black, white, and purple G10 liners and spacers. •Brass mosaic wolfs head pin w/ brass pins. •Triple moon that I engraved and then filled in with enamel! I really love this piece. It was something I’ve never made before and I was pretty happy to try it out. Now I have a sweet custom order for 2 of these that are ALOT larger! Kamas coming up soon!!!! submitted by /u/G7MS to r/knifemaking [link] [comments]

Popped up on my feed - thoughts? Would you still forage where it's banned?
There were some comments about how anti foraging laws came about in the post-civil war era to prevent black and indigenous people from supporting themselves off the land and it prevented them from engaging in traditional cultural practices. I hadn't thought about this before but it makes sense. Do you all forage in places where it's banned? submitted by /u/OkButterscotch2617 to r/foraging [link] [comments]

Foraging is actually the best money making method.
Let's take a look at all the most popular MMM's. Mining - Current best MMM F/M7 - Extreme RNG carry Farming - Really good MMM Rift - Good MMM, completely free and takes like no time at all to get started Mining - Takes hundreds of hours to set up. Extremely repetitive and extremely boring. F/M7 - Extremely repetitive, you basically need a term and a hyp. Farming - Less time than mining, but has a hard cap on how much money you can make. Don't expect more than like 25m for the average person with a life. Rift - Soul-destroying torture. And before you start commenting - No, foraging does not make more Skyblock Coins than literally any other MMM. However, it is still the best. Allow me to explain. All of the money making methods, you do in order to purchase things. Infernal crimson armor? Hype? Term? Dyes? Divan's drill/necklace? You aren't doing the MMM because it is what it is. You do it because it's positives and negatives appeal most to you. You don't farm just to farm. You don't mine just to mine. You don't do tiny dancer challenge on 500 ping just to do it. You do these things in order to get something else. Which brings me to the solution - foraging. Aside from autopet rules, you basically need 50m to max out foraging equipment. It brings a tranquility and a sense of gratification which knows no mortal bounds to reach Foraging 50 legitimately. You think of all your hard work, and you look back on the good times chatting with people while exploring the different faculties of every branch and wood type. You laugh (and then bash your keyboard in) as you remember the ender armor/sa armor treecap nons looking at you in your face, then proceeding to tail you and taking half your trees. Foraging is better than graduating college. It's better than having a loving family and kids. It's better than donating jillions of dollars to charity. It proves that you have the determination, drive, and spirit to joyfully, willingly do something not for the purpose of attaining something else, but just for the "love of the game". If I could, I'd put foraging 50 on my job application. The absolute power, divine in nature, perhaps, which you gain from foraging is unmatched. Unsuited. Unsullied. This is the only thing in Skyblock (aside from quitting in your first hour) that will actually benefit you in any way. Conclusion: Forage. submitted by /u/Any_Register2726 to r/HypixelSkyblock [link] [comments]

Please read this if you're new to foraging!
Edit: Please don't give me awards, donate it to your local orgs that need funding! Here in Michigan we have Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, Washtenaw Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights, We the People Opportunity Farm, and Farmworker Legal Services, just to name a few! Like many hobbyists, we're seeing a lot of influx into this community as a result of the quarantine-- but unlike many hobbyists it's really, really easy for newbies to seriously fuck up the local ecosystem. And while I certainly fucked up quite a bit when I was learning the ropes, there's less ecological tolerance for it now then there was when I was starting out because there's so many people out there now. I don't mean to be a fearmonger, or to imply that we're going to cause, like, immediate total ecological collapse or something. Though I am sure this may read like that to some folks. I am just trying to walk that fine line between being patient with new folks and also trying to make sure people take it seriously. Here are some things I wish people knew before starting to forage. For many species, like morels and chanterelles, it's really, really easy to over-pick them. There are basically no morel spots in my city anymore because of this. You have to drive 20-30 minutes outside of the city to have a hope of finding any. Don't ask people for their mushroom spots. They almost certainly won't tell you. (I hear in Sweden it's a HUGE faux pas!) Instead, go out and walk the land and learn what grows where; look up some books on foraging and mushroom hunting. For instance, once you know that chicken of the woods is a common parasite of oak and cherry trees, you can start keeping a sharper eye out in nature areas that have lots of oak and cherry trees! For the love of god, PLEASE look up how to sustainably forage. Learn about the organism you're harvesting and treat it with respect so that you and others can continue to make use of it. E.g. don't pull up ramps by the roots because they don't start producing seeds until they're 5-7 years old. This means one single plant takes up to 7 years to produce seeds! Once you pull it up, you've essentially killed that plant-- but if you cut it from the roots with a sharp knife, leaving a chunk of it in the ground, it'll re-grow next year. Same is true for many other plants and fungi. When you're not sure of an ID, take a picture-- don't pick it. See above re: sustainable foraging. Consider gardening instead of/in addition to foraging! Harvesting things you grow in your backyard can be just as rewarding as foraging, and you don't have to worry about your sustainability! Even in my tiny-ass apartment I'm able to grow a bunch of herbs and veggies in big containers outside. eattheweeds.com is a great resource. Dandelions, chickweed, purslane, watercress, and more are all weeds that grow probably right outside your house and don't require much searching at all-- and they make a great salad! Hope that helps and doesn't sound like I'm being too much of a jerk! If people hate it/if this isn't well received let me know and I'll delete it. Edit: OMG I forgot one of the most important things which is EAT YOUR INVASIVES!!!! Learn what they are and go to town! Garlic mustard makes a great pesto; autumn olive makes jam, ketchup, and apparently (according to some folks on this thread!) a good beer; curly dock goes great in salads; you can do all kinds of things with japanese knotweed. If you're in Florida, cook up some lionfish; if you're in the Great Lakes, hunt some carp. Happy foraging!! submitted by /u/Oriza to r/foraging [link] [comments]
