I'm very new to makeup. I've been sampling a lot of different skin tints and lighter foundations. It's been fun swatching in-store and taking home samples. I'd built up enough of a collection of samples that, this past week, I was going to start full face trials at home. I wanted to use a brush for application and was advised to pick up the Sephora PRO Foundation Brush #64. Unfortunately, I am finding this brush too irritating to use. I do not have overly sensitive or reactive skin. I do plenty of skincare/prep, but I tried using the brush two days in a row and it wasn't just a fluke the first time. Something about this brush (I don't know if it's the density, the way the bristles are cut, the type of bristles or some other factor) instantly gives me that "pinprick" sensation and leaves the skin feeling itchy (the way it would after a light scratch, not a "reaction" to something.) By contrast, I used the Hourglass Veil Powder Brush to lightly apply setting powder after my skin tint and that brush did not irritate the skin at all. Unfortunately, I won't be able to return the Sephora brush. That's my fault. I purchased it over the holidays, but didn't open it and start trialing it until this past week. But, I do need to replace it. For now, I want to try and find an alternative brush vs. going with beauty blenders. Could I get recommendations for alternative brushes and/or what to look for in brush specs and descriptions to avoid having this issue moving forward? I was 20 when I bought my first makeup brush set and honestly had no idea of what I was doing. I just decided to go with the flow, with what my heart called out to. So I grabbed what I felt was decent and went my way. They have served me surprisingly well to have made it to the fifth year but currently my foundation brush has been shedding bristles into my makeup and as for my blending brush? It has lost its shape entirely. So this time I want to replace everything properly, instead of just grabbing some random brushes like before. But the problem is that I don't really know whether my current application issues are actually because of the brushes or solely on my techniques. Would new brushes make a difference or am I just in denial and assuring myself I need new tools? Well, I've been looking at options and the price range is insane, different prices basically for the same number of brushes. I'm torn between going for the expensive ones or cheap ones. I wouldn't want to end up getting something for the packing alone. Wearing the shade .5N. It looked quite orange on the back of my hand but is stunning on the face. Paired with the Haus Labs Blush stick in the Shade Glassy Hibiscus and the a Haus labs concealer. It had beautiful stying power and didn’t need to be set. I did put a bit of powder on and under the eyes to keep my mascara (Maybelline sky high) from running. I tried applying with both a beauty blender and the morphe flat top foundation brush and they were equally stunning. When I first started, I thought it would be simple. Foundation. Concealer. Eyeliner. Lipstick. Done. But then you realize your face looks kind of flat… so you buy a blush. Then you see how good blush looks with highlighter. So you buy that too. Then your foundation isn’t quite right. Maybe it’s slightly too orange. Or too pale. Or it looks weird around your mouth. So you buy an orange corrector. Then a green one for acne. Then you learn you have olive undertones (wow me!) and now apparently you need a blue corrector too. At this point, you’re not even adding fun products. You’re just trying to fix the ones you already bought. And blush? Don’t even get me started. Too pink. Too warm. Too dull. So you buy another. And another. And you can’t return opened cosmetics, so the “wrong” shades just sit there as wasted money. Then one day you realize your makeup doesn’t last long enough. So now you need a primer. Or a setting spray. And of course you need setting powder to lock everything in. And don’t even get me started on brushes. Because apparently you need different brushes for everything. Foundation brush. Concealer brush. Blush brush. Setting powder brush. Multiple eyeshadow brushes. And they all cost money. This is all drugstore, but when you keep adding product after product after product, it really adds up. And if you wear makeup regularly, you have to repurchasing things soon. I’ve looked at Sephora collection, Sephora pro, and individual brands’ brushes. First of all, you guys are makeup/skincare geniuses and I love each and every one of you who helped me out 🫶🏻 I posted in here a few weeks ago asking for help with foundation as my face would always appear dry and clumpy by the end of the day like in the last pic here, no matter what brand of foundation I used. Turns out my skin type is dry and I was over exfoliating, in addition to using all matte products (this sub also helped me realize matte is out of style now. Apparently I’m just an out of touch millennial lol). So here’s what I changed based on everyone’s advice: I started applying a small amount of aquafor to my face every night, along with weekly hyaluronic acid face mask treatments. I use a wash cloth to wash my face daily instead of a rotating brush, which is a lot gentler. And I started using a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation, along with a mineral powder finish. And that’s it!! No more primers, no more setting sprays even. And my makeup stays looking like this all day long! I don’t even have to use concealer any more. Just tinted moisturizer, powder, blush, brows, mascara, and a little lip tint. Takes about 5-10 minutes out of my morning! No matter what I do, my makeup always cakes on my chin, upper lip and under my eyes, and most of the time around my nose but not as bad. For my morning skincare routine, ive tried waiting for 2 minutes, 20 minutes and an hour, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Ive tried exfoliating, shaving peach fuzz, tried different primers with different foundations (making sure they match water/silicone), ive tried a full AM skincare routine (toner, serum, eye cream, moisturiser, spf). Ive tried stripping it down to just eye cream and moisturiser. Ive tried using different moisturisers etc. Ive tried different setting sprays, and changing how I apply foundation, with a brush or damp beauty blender. Ive tried using more loose powder, and less. I think im combi skinned, leaning more dry. I know my under eyes are dry, but ive tried like 10 different eyes creams and am yet to notice a difference to any creasing. Is there anything im missing? It happened really quickly so it isn't like I was sweating it off all day. I wasn't sweating at all. And my mouth/chin area is not at all oily. Hi! Y'all were super sweet and super encouraging when I posted last, and it makes me so happy to see y'all treat us trans girls so nicely! Before delving into the main point, I want to talk about eyebrows. Last time, there was a lot of discussion about my eyebrows (and i wasn't at all expecting it): a lot of folks said they should get trimmed or waxed, a lot said to keep them. So, fully honest here, I love my natural eyebrows (maybe more than the new ones)! But I did choose to get them threaded~ the reason, ultimately, is a personal reason: I had never done it before, and they grow back; so, it would be fun to try something new! Hopefully I'll keep posting over the next several months, and y'all will see me with a few different versions of brows, some more trimmed, some less; some bold, some feathery. In the end, I'll probably end up near a cleaned up version of where I started, but let's enjoy the ride! On to the makeup! So, I tried to work with the advice I received, and get a lighter foundation. I sort of got better at that. I also got a new foundation. More on that later. I also tried a peach lipstick, and worked with more browns and mauves. I also tried some more peach blush, too. And shaving. Look, there's lots of advice, and im still working on following some of it, line experimenting with blues and mauves in eyeshadow. But I think y'all helped me improve my natural looks which is such a huge help at work. And also, progress is not linear. I got a new foundation and a foundation match. Now a liquid foundation. Those are the last few pictures. And the first couple days were... awkward. I had to relearn a lot of things. I had to unlearn some others. One morning, I just sat still and experimented with different ratios if mixing the new liquid foundation with color correction and concealer. But at the end, with the last picture in makeup, I think I ended up with one of my best looks! And finally got a darker blush to work, too. I also included a picture of just my face, without makeup, so y'all know what I'm working with. I have a case of persistent rosacea. I'm still experimenting with what sort of skincare makes my skin happier. As for my products, I'm working with a skin tint (previously foundation balm), putty concealer, powder bronzer, powder blush (pink, peach with sparkles, and a brownish red), lip liners, lip gloss and stick and tint and plumpers, brown and black eyeliner, brown and black mascara, brown brow pencil, brown tinted brow gel, orange and green color corrector, concealer, a setting spray + sunscreeb, and highlighter. We were hired to build a client 4 sets of stairs for his cottage. We got to talking about the building and the idea of a vault door to secure his keg room and antique fire arms came up. Not something we ever built, but fully in the realm of our skill set. End result was pretty awesome. It s awfully functional vault door built fully out of 1/4" plate. It has a smart lock and also serves as a panic room door. The finish is a clear industrial wax over washed raw hit rolled plate. The rods are polished and brushed stainless and hide the latching system. The whole thing weighs 500lbs. We had to build a custom door frame that attaches directly to the concrete ICF foundation. Whoever suggested this, thank you! Finally, found a product that keeps me matte all day. Hindi na shiny, no need for blotting paper, and still looks fresh at the end of the day (lalo na sa mga photos, I no longer look like hulas). Laneige Neo Essential Blurring Powder. For context, I get oily 1-2 hours after applying my makeup. I have tried adding a mattifying primer to my routine pero no change pa rin. I have also tried the loose setting powder from Mac pero wala pa rin. Tried not using a moisturizer (just my sunscreen) pero shiny pa rin. Tried switching my sunscreen to the gold Anessa (which they sais is recommended for oily skin) pero shiny pa rin. Eto lang pala ang makakapagmatte sa face ko. I use it to set my liquid foundation. Since using this I no longer need to touch up my makeup. Hindi na rin ako gumagamit ng blotting paper. Don't be scared of the white powder, it won't affect your makeup. And totoong nakakablur sya. I use a brush to apply it, mas nacocontrol ko kasi yung amount ng powder compared pag puff. BONUS: I am on tretinoin and it does not emphasize my flaky skin. Pores on my nose are not emphasized too compared to other powders. TIP: Hold your breath when applying this. I (24f) recently moved back in with my parents so I could finish trade school. My little sister (10) and I share a jack and Jill bathroom, I had been noticing slime and spilled wax all over the counter tops and and light switch in my side of the bathroom and had talked to my parents about keeping my little sister out of my side of the bathroom. Well 2 weeks ago I was supposed to go on a date but couldn’t find any of my makeup, I asked my little sister if she had taken it out of my bathroom and her response was “I didn’t even know you wore makeup”. She’s a good kid so I believed her and figured I must have lost my makeup in the move which pissed me off because I buy expensive stuff since I don’t use it too often. I ended up going to the store that day and just replacing the concealer/foundation (100$) since I couldn’t afford to replace my whole set. Well this morning I wake up to find my old concealer/foundation sitting right on top of the new ones I just bought. I asked my mom if she had found it somewhere and she said she never touched it. It was pretty obvious that it had leaked or something because there was makeup all on the outside of the bottle and it was way more empty than when I last had it. My mom immediately thinks that my little sister took it and goes into her room to snoop around. The next think I know my mom starts tossing the room and I’m trying to get her to stop when she finally dumps out a drawer with not only my makeup but a bunch of makeup of my moms that had gone missing. My sister had taken 2 makeup pallets of mine, 1 I hadn’t even opened yet, brushes, lipstick, eye liner, basically everything. On top of that my mom found open containers of slime and paint that had seeped into the carpet and other shit she had stolen from around the house. All of the makeup she took from my mom and I were destroyed, the pallets were mixed together and cracked, brushes had paint in them, lipstick mashed, and everything was covered in slime. When me and my parents confronted her she denied everything, even said that she didn’t use any of the makeup when it was an obvious lie. My parents have grounded her for month (no phone, no electronics) and have offered to pay me back but I don’t want them to pay me back I want HER to pay me back. She stole and destroyed nearly 200$ in makeup and lied to my face about it, the worst part is I’ve only been living here for 3 weeks! Her 11th birthday is coming up in 2 months and I’m wondering if i would be the asshole if I made her use her birthday money to pay me back? I feel like taking her birthday money is cruel especially because it’s the only kind of spending money she gets all year and my parents have suggested chores but what chores is she gonna do for me to pay me back? I do more chores than her and I pay rent! EDIT: My parents are not against her paying me back with her birthday money, they actually suggested it first, they’re leaving it up to me to decide how I want to be payed back. My grandparents give her a 200$ check every birthday on top of toys/art stuff for extra spending money during the year.
