What is Fruit Fly Trap?

A fruit fly trap is a device designed to attract and capture fruit flies, which are small insects that are commonly found in homes, especially in kitchens where ripe or rotting fruits are present. These traps use various attractants, such as vinegar or fruit scents, to lure the flies in and prevent them from reproducing.

FLYCATRAZ - Fruit Fly Trap
Most fruit fly traps share a fundamental design flaw: they allow light into the bait area. The flies use this light to navigate, often easily finding their way back out. FLYCATRAZ weaponizes physics against them. Engineered as a light-sealed containment system, it plunges the bait zone into absolute darkness. Instead, we exploit the insects' natural phototaxis (light orientation): precision perforations in the lid act as light anchors. These deflect the flies away from the entry point, funneling them into an optical dead-end along the perimeter. They see the light, but the physical escape route remains locked. https://makerworld.com/models/2901625?appSharePlatform=copy submitted by /u/Ghulaschsuppe to r/3Dprinting [link] [comments]

Been trying everything for a severe fruit fly infestation. This simple homemade trap works better than anything I’ve purchased.
double sided sticky trap sheets around a container of apple cider vinegar. in the same amount of time it took to catch these, premade traps have caught 2-3 flies each edit: For people saying those are too big to be fruit flies, I found a regular fly (this one is actually kind of small for a fly) in my windowsill and stuck it next to the ones I caught https://imgur.com/a/kEqSzyQ the sticky traps are 7.5x10cm. Also that’s standard sized scotch tape holding them in place. are they some other kind of fly or gnat? Idk, but they’re much smaller than house flies. Can’t Cook, Can’t Eat, Can’t Live - Fruit Flies Everywhere
I have an apartment in Austin, TX. It’s brand new and I’m the first person to live in it. I’m extremely frustrated with fruit flies. I’ve done everything you can imagine, and they still keep coming. I’ve been renting for over 10 years and I’ve never had an issue like this. I can’t cook because of them. I can’t even eat inside my apartment because they immediately swarm my food. I’m honestly at the point of crying. Pest control can’t do anything. I still have 5 months left on my contract. I can’t break it because I’d have to pay all remaining rent, and I’m not allowed to sublease. I’m stuck with these mf. What I’ve done so far: Taken all trash cans outside to the balcony. The balcony door hasn’t been opened for 2 weeks. Stopped eating anything inside the apartment. Cleaned the entire apartment thoroughly. Cleaned all drains and blocked them, except the main kitchen sink. That one has a plug, and every time I use it, I put the plug back, block airflow, and pour water to keep the trap sealed. Apple cider vinegar + dish soap traps. They catch like 10 flies a day and I constantly refresh them. Constantly killing flies with cleaning spray. It works, but they keep coming. Asked the leasing office for pest control. They came and only sprayed the drains. My thoughts: They’re coming from outside. My apartment stays at 72°F, and when the weather outside gets cold, the flies disappear. When it warms up above ~70°F, they come back. It’s probably the HVAC vents, the entrance door, or some gap somewhere. I don’t know anymore. I’m exhausted and tired of these mf. submitted by /u/Jsycke6436 to r/CleaningTips [link] [comments]

I joined the bonsai contest and wanted to create something useful instead of just another plastic tree. So I came up with Bonfly. We’ve tried everything but can’t get rid of fruit flies in kitchen and bathroom- what else can we do?
We are dealing with a really bad fruit fly problem, ISO recommendations on how to get rid of them because I’m about to lose my mind. We’ve: cleaned out the fridge, moved the oven and fridge to make sure nothing was spilled underneath, checked for any food left around the house by the kids, use baking soda and vinegar and then boiling water in the drains, used apple cider vinegar traps, used the Zevo light trap, have bleached out the trashcan and recycling bin, put my aloe plant outside, put all fruit in sealed containers, and have had the exterminator come out and he poured something in the drains. What are we missing? We’re still finding them constantly in the kitchen (even in the fridge which I’ve thoroughly cleaned out and put all fruit and veggies in sealed containers) and bathroom. I’m 99% sure they’re not drain flies based on how they look (picture of them in apple cider vinegar trap for reference). 😩 submitted by /u/hp774465 to r/pestcontrol [link] [comments]

Improved fruit fly trap: put sticky paper behind your apple cider vinegar or wine
I've always used apple cider vinegar to catch fruit flies, but it's frustrating seeing so many just chilling on the surfaces around it. My wife was using these sticky window fly traps to catch house flies, and I dawned on me to move the vinegar next to it to catch all the ones just hanging around. submitted by /u/ThanklessThagomizer to r/CleaningTips [link] [comments]

FAILSAFE way to get rid of fruit flies 100% guaranteed!
OK guys so a few years ago we went away on an extended vacation and came back to a fruit fly infestation. When I would go to the trashcan, there would be a cloud of them fly out of there. I read lots of remedies and how to drown them with traps and such But I had a different idea. And it worked. Really worked. What I did is I went and bought a sticky fly trap. These are the ones that look like a little can and you pull the sticky material upward and it uncoils into a long strip approximately 24 inches long. I uncoiled it and actually hung it right near the trashcan since that’s where they were congregating. Next I cleaned the kitchen, bathroom area is really really well. Anywhere with water because that’s what they need along with whatever food. I mainly wanted to Clorox those areas to keep them out of there so they would seek other places for sustenance or moisture. I then took half of a napkin and soaked it with apple cider vinegar. This draws them like a moth to a flame. They smell that vinegar and they come. Take the napkin and stick it down in the can that is hanging at the end of your sticky strip. They will smell the vinegar, fly in and land on the strip. I’m convinced the flies already stuck to it draw them in like duck decoys do to flying ducks. Give it a couple days and that strip will be full of them. It’s incredible how quickly it works. Simply take it down and throw it away when you’re done and if need be hang another strip to get the stragglers. I swear you will see a difference in no time. submitted by /u/Jomofo1967 to r/CleaningTips [link] [comments]

MASSIVE fruit fly infestation. Nothing is working!!
I went on vacation not even thinking about the fruit I had in a bowl on the dinner table. I always keep my windows open because we have no AC (it doesn't get hot here) I came back from my two week trip with THOUSANDS of fruit flies in my house. I mean they are on every damn wall of this place and I can't even live here. I tried to lay out vinegar traps with some (maybe I used too much soap?) They are not being drawn to it at all. I have nothing out that would attract them outside of the traps but i'm catching hardly anything. I have a dog so I can't just spray the entire place with a bug spray. I nuked my drains and the only food source they would have is the vinegar. Has anyone had any success with this? Maybe I put too much soap and they are not being drawn to it idk. This is a nightmare. submitted by /u/Jumpy_Nothing859 to r/lifehacks [link] [comments]

Best Fruit Fly Trap Ever
Maybe this was already known, but I just came up with this recipe after trying apple cider vinegar for years. In a glass with no cover mix: -A half inch or so of whiskey (cheaper is better) -Tiny squirt of dish soap -Splash of water -(Optional) Apple moonshine (or something else sweet) Swirl it to mix, leave uncovered with a note not to drink. In the time it took me to write this I caught two already. submitted by /u/MeProfessiLavaHot to r/lifehacks [link] [comments]

It's scary how I was just reading a post here the other day thinking how crazy those people were to be having fruit fly troubles. Yeah, karma's a bitch. They're in rooms without food... submitted by /u/Uhurungus to r/Portland [link] [comments]

TIFU by unknowingly hosting a fruit fly breeding hub, in my closet, for six months of my life.
TW: Eating disorder, insects, probably don't read if you also have OCD. This is an incredibly convoluted story and, honestly, really fucked up. I never thought anyone outside of the people I'm living with would know about it. However, I've recently been browsing this subreddit. After reading about a guy fucking a maggot-infested coconut, feel like I, subjectively, did not fuck up as much as that. Although this might be equally disgusting. This event happened exactly a year ago now, and while it was genuinely one of the most traumatic periods of my life, I can laugh about it now as it's honestly funny how my mind became my biggest enemy. In February of 2019, I stumbled into a large sum of money and decided that I would take my grandma on vacation. She has been my sole provider throughout my life and works tirelessly, so I took her to Tennessee and we created memories I'll never forget. A very integral part of this tale is that I have OCD. One of my biggest triggers is insects. So when I returned home from my trip and sat down at my PC to play some games, it did not take me long to notice these tiny little brown gnats flying past my peripheral. I panic. I realized that I had accidentally left out half of a lemon in my room before I went on my trip. I immediately suit up, decked out in three pairs of gloves and clothes that I later threw away, and I disposed of the lemon. Problem solved, right? Upon the removal of this lemon, it seemed to me that the fruit flies dissipated after a few days. Everything was fine. Until they came back. I could not, for the life of me, figure out where the fuck they were coming from. The lemon was gone. Once I eliminated the source, it seemed to me that based on thousands of compulsive internet searches and hours spent reading, that the fruit flies would go away. I took every piece of furniture out of my room, vacuumed for hours, scrubbed every possible surface, disinfected every nook and cranny, just to appease the thoughts in my head that perhaps they had laid eggs somewhere that I could not visibly see. I made sure not to bring any source of liquid or food into my room. Nothing helped. The fuckers were multiplying at rapid speed. I deep-cleaned my kitchen, scrubbed every vegetable and fruit we owned, made sure the trash was taken outside multiple times per day, even though it seemed that they only existed in my room. But there was nothing in there! The straw that broke the camel’s back was when I was laying down in my bed and one landed upon my arm. Absolutely not. I began to hyperventilate, I jumped out of bed, turned on my lights, and realized that they were everywhere. It felt like my world was crumbling around me. I felt trapped. The idea that they were flying around me and I could not possibly kill every single one, I could not know where they were at every moment, the idea that they were crawling on me and oh God, the bacteria. A complete and utter loss of control. I deemed then that my room was uninhabitable. I could not go in there. I set up maybe ten vinegar/soap traps within my room. I placed paper on top of every vent and taped it shut. I shoved a towel under my door. I vowed then that absolutely under no circumstances would I open that door, and nobody else could so much as even touch the doorknob. I had to get out, and they could not come with me. Over the next few weeks, my room was in lockdown. I slept in the spare bedroom, although I did not get much sleep. I lived in constant fear that a fruit fly would escape from my room and taunt me again. I stayed vigilant, always watching. I couldn’t focus on anything because my brain told me I must stay alert. I eventually set up vinegar traps throughout my entire home just for some slight peace of mind. As time proceeded, I realized that somehow, despite having no real exit or entrance, the fruit flies escaped my room. I broke down. I felt like I had nowhere to go in my own home. Nowhere felt safe to me. I was constantly reminded that I was not the one in control. It didn’t matter where I was in the house, I would see a fruit fly, and it would send me into an unrelenting panic attack. My family eventually got fed up with me refusing even to enter that side of the house. They decided that since I would not, they would go inside and inspect. For some reason, it never occurred to me to look in my closet. What could possibly be in the closet? All I had in there were clothes I didn’t wear. I didn’t use my closet because I kept all of my clothes in the spare bedroom. However, this oversight was my biggest mistake. My grandmother found the source of my turmoil. The past 6 months of my life were spent living in constant fear and confusion. I’d racked my brain for every possible answer, cleaned everything and anything, and could not, for the life of me, figure out the source. There were thousands of fruit flies caught in my traps and yet they seemingly never ended. In my closet was a bag. It was decaying and rotten. It was absolutely disgusting. It was covered in fruit fly maggots, tons of adult fruit flies feasting upon the contents of this bag, and it struck me that this entire ordeal was entirely my fault. I have been bulimic since I was 14 years old. Most of the time, I would simply purge my meal into the toilet and go on with my day. However, at some point that I can’t remember, I’d needed to purge and had company over, so I vomited into a plastic bag and hid it in my closet. At that point, I had never faced any real, in my face consequences from my eating disorder. My teeth have been fine, sure I got nauseous when I ate but, to me, that only made it easier to do what I do. This was my wake up call. This was my slap in the face, the final realization that I truly had a problem. The last 6 years that I spent face down in the toilet with two fingers down my throat, it all came to bite me in the ass in a way I never could have precedented. I spent 6 months of my life genuinely believing that I was going crazy. I lost absorbent amounts of sleep, endured multiple panic attacks daily, and it all came down to my toxic relationship with food. I hope anyone who has made it this far can understand the overwhelming guilt and shame I felt when I found out that this disgusting vomit bag, the product of my eating disorder, was also the catalyst for 6 months of my insanity. I hope this goes to show the evil and relentless grip that our own psyche can have upon us when we are sick. Something as small as fruit flies probably does not mean much to the average person, but I still am sent into panic if I see a flying insect. It seems so silly to have trauma associated with such a thing but I will never forget the sense of doom I felt standing in a swarm of insects. Anywho, that’s my story of how I unknowingly sponsored the most notorious fruit fly orgy, in my closet. TL;DR: TIFU by unknowingly breeding thousands of fruit flies in my closet by forgetting that I’d left a bag of my own vomit in there as a result of my eating disorder. EDIT: Quite frankly, I didn't expect anyone to read this because it's a literal novel. Thank you for all the awards and gold, I am glad that some people can get some kind of entertainment from this. It's kinda funny to me now too. I did leave a few things out because I'd already written so much but I keep seeing similar comments, so I'll just put it here. The vomit was not in clear sight. It was tucked away back in the back, underneath a lot of things. It's not like no one else never looked in the closet, it just wasn't until someone searched deeply that they found it. The bag was under comforters and other shit. The closet was just a major oversight. Looking back in retrospect, I want to beat the shit out of myself for not looking earlier, but I obviously can't take any of that back now. The closet is so ignored that I really just forget it exists, and in my panic state, all logic and reason kind of goes out the window. No, the smell of vomit did not penetrate into my room. By the time the vomit actually smelled, it only smelled right around the bag and a little bit in the closet. I moved out of the room very early into this story, and by then, my room smelled of vinegar, disinfectants, and bug spray. Because there were so many traps, the predominant smell was vinegar, so I suppose that is why none of us ever smelled the vomit. Most people with OCD know that there are multiple ways that OCD can manifest. It is not always the over-organization, arranging, and cleaning that is represented in media. I'd never had any issues with insects in my home. My room was not unkempt besides this bag. I have completely different and unrelated compulsions and obsessions. Some people question how I can have OCD if I forgot a bag of vomit in my closet. I've personally never read that criterion in the DSM or heard from my psychiatrist, but I will be sure to ask her next time. Thank you to everyone being kind about this experience and my eating disorder, even though this story is gross as hell and really embarrassing. I have been in recovery for several months now and am happy to say I haven’t purged in months so I definitely don’t have to worry about this occurring again. Thank you all, stay safe and take care! Oh, and don't leave vomit bags in your closet. submitted by /u/codeineprincess to r/tifu [link] [comments]

Fruit fly trap. Cut top off bottle, flip and stuff top into bottom of bottle, pour in beer, wine, or fruit juice. Wait 24 hours, rinse out the little bastards and repeat as necessary.
