Being a penny pincher, this is for other penny pinchers! I only bought the cake knife and shelf brackets. The old cutting board, 1x2, and screws were lying around the garage. Works pretty good, too! Cheapest brackets I could find were at Walmart. And there are no paint issues at all. In fact, the brackets aren't even "painted," at least not in the conventional sense, it's more like enamel. You should also cut a groove in the cutting board along where the knife would make contact. That way, when you slice through the bottom of the loaf, the knife edge falls into that groove and (hopefully) won't cut into the board. I've been slicing my bread with this contraption for the past three months, and I make bread every 3-4 days, so it's had a pretty good workout. The gap is about 1.5x the width of the blade. Slicing tends to keep the knife blade centered. More importantly, it keeps the knife blade at a 90 degree angle to the cutting board, so the cutting edge of the blade doesn't saw into the bracket. So far, there is no indication of "paint" chipping off and no indication the cutting edge of the blade is scraping the bracket. Only part of the blade that touches the bracket is the smooth side, which is what it's supposed to do in order to guide the blade. If there was going to be a "paint" problem, I think I would have seen it by now. I'm keeping my eye on it, though. From AI: That 1.5x gap is the "sweet spot" for a DIY guide like yours. The black wheelie bin (trash can for our transatlantic chums) is for general waste, but it was emptied on Wednesday and we haven't put anything in it since. The brown bin is garden waste, and the green bin is dry mixed recycling - so nothing meaty in any of the bins that a raccoon, curious cat, inquisitive badger, or Fantastic Mr Fox would have been looking through any bins for. The garage door was closed overnight and there's no gap that anything could get through. What's above it? Wooden boards, and above that a bitumen felt flat roof - will post photos in the comments. Due to the shape and size of the splatter, lots of you have rather sensibly suggested looking up. It certainly looks like it has fallen from a height, and we did look up when we discovered and didn't see anything out of the ordinary so didn't think to post a picture. Upon closer inspection there are possibly some white fibres between the boards that are similar to the white/ grey exterior of "The Splat". I'll add some photos to the comments. We tend not to make a habit of looking at the ceiling in the garage, so there's a fair chance something has been growing there for a while and last night gravity got the better of it, but still no idea what this something actually is. There was a suggestion or two of cocoon or a nest. I think we might be honing in on an answer, but I googled pictures of wasps nests and they seem to look much drier than what we discovered. I'm a bit obsessed with organization, not just in the game but in almost everything in my daily life. I've realized that with my cars scattered across all my garages (and there are quite a few), I end up always using the same three cars, and the rest are just a waste of money. I feel like there are too many good cars to waste like that, so I want to create something to address this. I was thinking of an Access database with fields like "Brand", "Model", "Color", "Tuning Style", "Function", "Real-Life Inspiration", etc, so I can keep track of all my garages, then, if I ever want to use, for example, "a yellow armored SUV", I can filter the search and see where I have cars that fit that description. I would like to update the exterior of my 1972 ranch and I'd love input on how to modernize it while keeping it very natural looking and connected to the setting. The house sits in a wooded area overlooking woods and a creek and I really want it to feel "treehouse/organic modern".
