In the vein of fax machines, answering machines became ubiquitous, and then vanished. Similar to the Japanese phone cards, might be the US long distance cards and dial around numbers for cheap long distance. Gen Alpha next to me says “long distance” is “like a big amount of miles”, so probably the whole concept of telephone long distance is gone.

Gen Alpha’s brains are scrambled eggs
My daughter (7th grade) has a standardized test today, so yesterday she invited three classmates over to study math in preparation for it. She does okay in school. Not a straight A with ease student but still with hard work will make honor roll. She doesn’t have the intuition that I found easy to come by when I was in school but with proper practice she’s able to find the right answers more often than not. The other kids her age? I’m shocked at how dumb they are. Like I said she doesn’t quite have the intuition or know-how in how to explain concepts to kids her same age so she calls me in to help with the set of questions. In the first problem I had to explain to them, subtracting a negative number turns the problem into addition ( 4 - -1 = 5) and so on. Okay no problem that should be an easy one to remember. I think it broke some of their brains. The next question is easy. A word problem where maybe the words which serve as noise threw them off but the results were shocking. A chart showing percentages of water and how it’s used by people. showers = 25%, hand washing 10 and flushing 27. The question then asks what percent would various other uses be? Easy. Add the percentages it gives you (25+27+10=62). Subtract from 100% total to get your answer. So after walking them through that I ask them to set it up like this and do 100-62. One tells me “162” which makes me realize, she actually somehow managed to think every subtraction problem is now addition based on me explaining how subtracting negative numbers works. I explain why that’s not how that works. She corrects herself “oh it’s 68” … Another problem had to do with rounding. I explain if the decimal following a whole number is under .5 you round down to the nearest whole number. So I say 11.4 for example will round down to ______. I motion for the next kid to give me the answer. “10” … This went on for another hour and a half and we finally got through 10 problems with each kid having various issues with incredibly easy concepts. These kids have “well off” parents with time and resources to dedicate to schooling. How are they this far behind? How are they pushed on to the next grades? This is seriously worse than the most retarded kids I ever grew up with. No doubt they grew up watching YouTube brain rot on their iPads from age 3. I know these kinds of things won’t particularly matter for them to do without calculators past HS, but will they even be able to achieve basic critical thinking skills? submitted by /u/ATLien-1995 to r/redscarepod [link] [comments]

frustration with Gen Alpha iPad kid
My nephew (6yo) and sister in law came over to visit. He asked me about “Lion King”. A movie we were watching a week ago but we never got to finish. He said he wanted to watch the movie. It is on my macbook and I have work files open. So I told him to get his ipad from his mom and I will airdrop it to him and we can watch it on his ipad. He was so happy and went to get it right away. He comes back, with short video open already and eyes glued to the screen. Climb onto my bed and lay there doom scrolling short video. I called his name. No response. Ask him if he still want to watch Lion King. No response. Eyes never leaving the screen for a split second. Okay, I will put it on his ipad and he can watch it when he gets home or whenever. Told him I’m going to start the airdrop now. I told him it will just be a few seconds. He just need to hit accept and he can switch back to continue watching shorts. I start airdrop. He hit decline. And shouted at me very loudly that he is watching a video. I wait for the short he is watching to finish to talk to him. Nothing. Right to the next short video. I give up. Now his mom is calling him to come eat. I urge him to go. No response. His mom call him again and I can tell she is getting upset. I pause his video and told him he needs to go eat now or his mom is going to get upset. He said no! And resume video. I took the ipad from his hand, held it infront of him with the video still playing. He followed it in a trance as we walk to the kitchen. FML. Kids nowadays, especially Gen Alpha, cannot concentrate on reading books for very long. Is it a true story or just a myth?
Yesterday, I took a train and sat next to another family. The kids were on their phones almost the entire ride, watching one flashy Tiktok video after another I couldn’t help but notice how glued they were to their screens. Not once did they look out the window or talk to each other. Keep hearing people say that kids today especially Gen Alpha have shorter attention spans and can’t focus on reading books anymore. Some teachers and parents claim that even when kids want to read and they lose interest after just a few pages. Are Gen Alpha kids really losing their ability to focus on reading, or are we just overreacting to a new media culture like our parents did with us? For me, I think you cannot compare short videos and social media to TV because they are totally different things. Short videos and social media can harm attention spans sometimes even watching movies feels productive, let alone reading books. I’ve noticed that the people who read in public or in libraries are mostly older. I hardly ever see kids reading books anymore. submitted by /u/Delicious_Maize9656 to r/books [link] [comments]

Gen Alpha is perfectly fine, and labelling them all as "idiotic iPad kids" is just restarting the generation war all over again.
I think it's pretty insane how many Millennials and Zoomers are unironically talking about how Gen A is doomed to have the attention span of a literal rock, or that they can't go 3 seconds without an iPad autoplaying Skibidi toilet videos. Before "iPad bad" came around, we had "phone bad." Automatically assuming that our generations will stop the generation war just because we experienced it from older generations is the exact logic that could cause us to start looking down on Gen Alpha by default (even once they're all adults), therefore continuing the cycle. Because boomers likely had that same mentality when they were our age. And while there are a few people that genuinely try to fight against this mentality, there's far more that fall into the "Gen Alpha is doomed" idea. Come on, guys. Generation Alpha is comprised of literal children. The vast majority of them aren't 13 yet. I was able to say hello to two Gen A cousins while meeting some family for Easter— They ended up being exactly what I expected and hoped for (actually, they might've surpassed my expectations!) Excited, mildly hyperactive children with perfectly reasonable interests for their ages, and big personalities. And even if you consider kids their age that have """"cringe"""" interests, I'd say it's pretty hypocritical to just casually forget all the """"cringe"""" stuff that our generations were obsessed with at the time. Let's just give this next generation the benefit of the doubt for once. We wanted it so much when baby boomers were running the show as parents— Can't we be the ones who offer it this time? submitted by /u/Cometpaw to r/GenZ [link] [comments]
