What is Glp1?

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) is a hormone that plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism and appetite regulation. It is secreted by the intestines in response to food intake and helps to lower blood sugar levels by enhancing insulin secretion, inhibiting glucagon release, and promoting satiety.

I am on a GLP-1 at a normal weight. AMA
Hi guys, I’m on a GLP-1 medication (semaglutide) at a normal weight (BMI 19). I am not diabetic. I have a history of binge eating disorder and I used to be horribly overweight but I lost the weight (painstakingly and slowly) through diet and exercise, without any medication. It was a gruelling process. When I transitioned into maintenance, despite professional therapy and supervision from my doctor, the binge eating thoughts got louder and louder and it became unbearable. I started to regain weight. I asked my doctor about the possibility of being on a microdose of GLP1 to counteract the food noise and weight gain and I was unequivocally rejected because I was still a normal weight. I refuse to put the weight back on and the food noise was tormenting me, so I got semaglutide on the grey market and learned how to mix, measure dosage, and inject it myself. I’m back to my maintenance weight, my food noise is completely gone, and I haven’t had a binge episode since I started. I’m finally free. AMA. glp 1 meds are being sold like a miracle, but no one talks about what they break.
GLP 1 meds are way overhyped and wildly under explained. yes, people lose weight but why is no one seriously talking about the nonstop nausea, the dead appetite, the weird digestion issues, the fatigue, the nothing sounds good anymore feeling? it's always before and after pics, never day to day reality. what really bugs me is how normalized it's become to just shut your body down and call it health. slow gut? normal. can't eat? normal. exhausted but not hungry? also normal apparently. and if you complain, you are told to push through like your body protesting is a moral failure. i'm not anti-glp 1, but pretending these meds don't create downstream problems is dishonest. A lot of people end up scrambling later trying to support digestion, energy, and metabolism with things like glp1 support supplements because surprise appetite suppression isn't the same thing as metabolic health. maybe instead of acting like glp 1 is the whole solution, we should talk more about how to actually support the body while on it because while knuckling side effects and calling it discipline feels like cope. curious who agrees and who is gonna hate this take. submitted by /u/Educational-Rub-5631 to r/TrueUnpopularOpinion [link] [comments]

Semaglutide (GLP1) has ruined my life over the past 5 weeks.
Started taking .25mg injections of Semaglutide (a glp1) on Jan.14 and it’s slowly ruined my stress levels, my HRV (holds tight at 25ms), and plummeted any thought of me being active or recovering from anything. I’m a super active person, riding 40-60 miles a week on bike at a fast pace and playing high level pickleball 2-3 times a week. And haven’t been able to do either for weeks. My sleep has been garbage because HRV has been SOOOOO low and literally started improving two nights ago. The elevated heart rate kept me awake just lying in bed while I can feel my heart pounding stuck wide awake. I only did two injections over 2 weeks. The side effects from this sh!t is no joke and I couldn’t suggest for anyone to take it from my experience. It will take 5-7 weeks to get out of my system and I’m on week 3 of recovery and still just feel like ass around the clock, unable to recover. And yeah, normally I’m in Exceptional or Strong…to being limited and just waiting for it to improve is demoralizing. “GLP1 is a helluva drug.” - Comedian Dave Chappelle submitted by /u/lalalavine to r/ouraring [link] [comments]

Former GLP-1 users regain lost weight after about 18 months, study says
Saw this article in th WaPo today, and was curious if this was true for you, if you have taken any GLP-1s. Former GLP-1 users regain lost weight after about 18 months, study says Those quitting Ozempic, Wegovy and other drugs regained weight four times faster than those using just diet and exercise, still key components in weight maintenance. People who take the most common categories of weight-loss drugs, semaglutide and tirzepatide, marketed as Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound, tended to lose about 33 pounds during their treatment but then regained about 22 pounds in the first year after stopping, Sam West, a physiology researcher at Oxford University who co-wrote the study, said in a phone interview Thursday. “What was particularly striking in our data was just how fast it was regained,” he said. https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2026/01/08/ozempic-wegovy-weight-regain-glp1/ submitted by /u/Own-Independence8430 to r/loseit [link] [comments]

This will sound crazy but supplementing high amount of fiber has been nearly equivalent as a GLP1 in benefits for me
I’ve been taking psyllium husk fiber for about 4 months religiously now. I’ve been dropping weight very consistently. I take much higher doses than I see people posting about though and this may explain why it’s working so well. Most people take 1 tablespoon, I’ve been taking 2 tablespoons 3 times a day. For a total of 24 grams of psyllium fiber. I would not exceed that amount to avoid any constipation issues. I also drink plenty of water. I swear I am never hungry, never craving anything, my blood sugar levels are extremely stable and even if I occasionally over eat I do not get that tired feeling. My poops are amazing. My cholesterol went from 30 points above range to literally at perfect range. My baseline appetite is much lower. Half the amount of foods satisfy me. What I found impressive was, one week I ran out of fiber and I noticed for a few days the benefits continued then I started taking it again. I have taken GLP1 but gained a tolerance and decided to stop. This feels very similar to being on them And it’s a fraction of the cost. submitted by /u/fastingslowlee to r/Biohackers [link] [comments]

GLP1 med feels like a miracle
I have Ehlers Danlos (Hypermobility type, officially dx) and MCAS and within 3 hours of my first tiny dose my pain level all over my body is literally about 70% better. I am SHOCKED. I live with excruciating pain my whole life. I was able to walk up a large flight of stairs I go up a couple times a week quickly (normally it's slow and excruciating 1 step at a time), and walking like a normal person. I can't believe this. It feels truly like a miracle. I have tirzepatide with B3. I can't believe this. It feels similar to about 50 mg of prednisolone but better. ETA Reading responses with mixed experiences. I am wondering if the there's a pattern we can notice. I have lifelong severe inflammation and allergies. DX with MCAS when I was 34, which is 13 years ago. Lifelong battle with severely under eating yet obese. Lipedema. Pots. MASH (Non Alcoholic Fatty liver), Gastroparesis. Dumping Syndrome. Autism . ADHD. Mood disorder. PMDD. Severe and frequent migraines. Possible but un dx PCOS. Short courses of strong Prednisolone cause me to drop inflammation and pain but only while on them. Update 48 hours later my jowls look pretty different https://imgur.com/a/y77a75J Update 96 hours later. Everything still great. No side effects. Still pain free. https://imgur.com/a/dZ7NZoX Update 1 week later. It lasts about 4.5 days then wears off to baseline. Effects back to good after 2nd dose. I am thinking about splitting it into 1/2 or 1/3 and doing it more often? I am going to ask my Dr. Update just shy of 3 weeks later. Last Thursday I decided to try taking the full prescribed dosage, 2.5 ml. I always have gastroparesis which is why I was scared to try this med. The full dose made me nauseous for a couple days. Then just more and more severe gastroparesis to where I literally could barely force myself to drink water. It was painful and scary. I am now letting it fully out of my system and will try again only at the tiny partial dose. In some of the studies that was what worked for people. I will update. I am trying to not panic. I am scared I will have to go back to a life filled with pain. Update: 2 weeks after last one. Thrilled to report that when I went back on .5 every 48 hours I can be pain free and zero gastroparesis. I lost 10 pounds this first month also. Update 4 months later: I am coping down a reply I just posted. Yes I am still AWESOME. I get a bit of a flair right around the first days of my period still but it's ok. I now take it daily so I have no lull/gap at all. I currently take .6 a day which is a little over 4 a week. Still Trizepatide with B3. I have lost 25 pounds. I am also now on oral chromlyn sodium and also the eye drops for my MCAS. The combination of all this has dramatically changed my life. I was so happy and doing so well 2 weeks ago that I freaked out and was afraid I was having some kind of manic episode (never have before) and made an appointment with my psych, she was very sweet and wasike no, you just are happy and feel well for the first time ever in your life. My osteopath said this happens to about half of his folks with MCAS/hEDS etc. But only half of us. I am so grateful. It makes me feel there HAS to be something that will work for the other half of folks too. I still have to take 23 doses of anti histamine and a giant amount of supplements a day for my MCAS. But... Now everything is WORKING. submitted by /u/Ecstatic_Air_4053 to r/MCAS [link] [comments]

At 25, I got into therapy for my binge eating (and general childhood trauma lol). I made slow and sustainable choices to love and care for myself. I started a GLP1 to help with my blood sugars and weight, started going to the gym, and lost 160lbs! Along the way I did a professional color analysis and found my personal style. I might get hate for this but whatever 🤷‍♀️ my husband thinks im crazy when I tell him I'll do anything to make sure I can get this medication for the rest of my life. I have made every change in my life!! I will get 3 jobs if it means I'll get my Ozempic/GLP1!! My insurance covers for now but the day it stops....I'll find a way! submitted by /u/Initial_Sock821 to r/Ozempic [link] [comments]

Seeing people’s GLP1 results make me feel like a failure.
*I am not anti GLP1 and I understand fhat they are very helpful and necessary for many people. However it is honestly so hard to see people losing weight with seemingly no effort, becoming much skinnier than I ever have been and ever will be, and experiencing freedom from things like cravings and food noise. And I will just never had that. I’m 5’1 and 125 lbs. So I’m not obese. And I’m at a good weight which I can recognize. But what honestly just really hurts is that people who take ozempic do not take it and get to my size. Someone my height who takes ozempic may start at double or even triple my weight and get down to 10 or 20 lbs lighter than I am now. But me? I have been yoyoing the same 5-10 lbs over and over again my entire adult life. I will never be the same size as someone who takes ozempic. I do suffer with food noise. I struggle to stay in a calorie defecit. Like I said, I don’t have anything against people who take it. But it just hurts seeing so many people shrink and feeling like there’s something wrong with me (physical? mental?) in that I can’t. submitted by /u/Impossible-Pin-703 to r/1200isplenty [link] [comments]

Thousands of GLP-1 patients later, these are the 7 lessons I wish everyone knew
I’m an internal medicine doctor who’s worked with thousands of people on GLP-1s (and even created a GLP-1 app). A lot of the frustration I see every day could be avoided with a better understanding of what’s normal. Here are 7 things I wish more people knew: Your appetite drops, but it's not magic. Emotional or habitual eating still takes work. Exercise takes work. It may be a little easier to do the work, but it's still work. Weight loss isn’t linear. Expect stalls and fluctuations. You might even gain weight here and there. That doesn’t mean it’s not working. "Weight loss" isn't the same as "Fat loss." Set realistic, healthy expectations. Many are disappointed in not losing at least 5 pounds per week. Anything around 1 pound per week or 1-2% body weight per week is wonderful. Protein helps with everything. Fullness, energy, and muscle retention all get easier when you're getting enough. Side effects are common—and usually temporary. Nausea, fatigue, constipation...they suck, but are often short-term. You don’t need to be perfect. Consistency beats perfection. The best results come from small habits and improving on them slightly week-over-week, not flipping your life upside down. Mindset matters more than macros. The people who win long-term break up big goals into little goals, identify ALL victories (not just on the scale), forgive themselves quickly and keep going. Happy to answer questions or expand on any of these. There’s a lot of noise out there. I want people to have real expectations and a better shot at long-term success. Edit-Post has been locked. Unsure exactly why, but thank you all for reading-I hope you got some value from it! submitted by /u/Dr_Mike_Herring to r/Zepbound [link] [comments]

Normal BMI Patient Requests GLP1
Late 40s female with BMI 24.5 comes to clinic for AWV and also requests GLP-1 prescription. Has never been on one. Is the heaviest weight she's ever been. Her daughter started it for obesity and has seen great results. Spouse recently also got on it. She has lots of friends on it. She wants it too. Doesnt mind doing it through compounding. No comorbitities. I told her no. It's not FDA approved for normal weight. Recent news about being higher risk for macular degeneration has come out. I offer dietician referral. Declines. 24 hour recall includes starving herself early morning to afternoon, then eating big dinner followed by oreos and treats before bed. Doesnt like vegetables. Eats on average 0-2 servings fruits/vegetables per day. She is active and exercises 3-5x a week and says she'll try to exercise more but really wanted a GLP1 because she wants to lose 15 lbs. Commented on jealousy that everyone else around her is losing weight easy with GLP1. I told her she may be able to find a Med Spa that will do it but as her doctor I don't think benefits outweigh the risks. Am I mean? Tell me what you do in this situation. Where do you draw the line on prescribing these meds, even if doing thru compounding pharmacy. submitted by /u/Redredwineallthetime to r/FamilyMedicine [link] [comments]

These GLP1 weight loss patients have been insufferable
So many patients have been so nasty towards me due to the GLP1 back order situation (specifically mounjaro + Zepbound) had a patient last week who let me know I was sick for prescribing Zepbound for her knowing it was gonna go on backorder! Didn’t even know I’m MD now. Had multiple patients curse me out cause their medication is out. Multiple patients crying that they NEED this drug so badly and I don’t understand them. Listen I get thwme frustration but what else could we do?? These patients have been the WORST I’ve seen working at the pharmacy for 10 years now. Ive honestly rather deal with anyone else than these weight loss people who are damn entitled. submitted by /u/moonlightttbae to r/PharmacyTechnician [link] [comments]
