Managed the first cut yesterday. There are several undulations in the lawn which I would like to eradicate - has anyone any experience of the simplest way to do this? e.g. mix topsoil with some grass seed and just keep topping up over time, go full on and try to lift turf add soil and relay which sounds much more difficult especially on a mature lawn

Fred said he plans on trying the roller today but will put down some grass seed he bought last year first. Guess that’s something the roller does. Pushes the seed into the ground better. I started with a IH #27 with a 1 cyl Wisconsin behind a Farmall B. In 1976 I bought a new #430 IH and a used 454 IH tractor. Baled about 1000 ton of hay and straw every year. Alfalfa, red clover, grass and lotus, grass seed straw, oat and wheat straw. Also baled lotus after seed crop. Baled a lot with a 544 hydro and the 430 baler....James

I've recently moved into a property where the lawn in the back garden is very patchy and damaged. My knowledge about gardening is next to absolutely nothing so have some potentially silly questions to ask, mainly about what grass seeds to purchase. Do i need to buy seeds that match the current lawn? And if so can someone recomend/drop a link for me to purchase some. I have also read if you buy cheap grass seeds you can get a lot of weeds in there? Do i just sprinkle seeds across the dead patches? So looking at the watering schedule he said it is looking fine but the grass was producing a lot of chaff and neeed aeration. Something feels wrong to me. I don’t see how/when it will bounce back. I don’t know why healthy grass is covered in too soil? I don’t understand how there just won’t be dirt in the grass now. Hi all, Are there any lawn experts here who knows where I’ve gone wrong when overseeding the lawn in my new garden? I carried out the work and overseeded 2 weeks today. Here’s a breakdown of what I did and with what products Aerated with pitchfork Mowed low Scarified many times lots of different angles Mowed low again to clean up Leveled where I can with 50/50 soil/sand mix Reseeded about 3kg of “A1 Fine Blade Grass Seed” (link down below) the area is about 60sqm2 toplayer of compost using a spread Watered between 2-4x daily depending if it was overcast or sunny Here I am, 2 weeks later with just a tonne more weeds, and probably less grass than I started with. What’s gone wrong? Or do I need to wait more? The bare patches literally have no seed there now, and no growth, so unsure? Below is a picture of start, during, some progress, and now with the weeds? It’s a full fescue mix which apprantly takes linger, and requires slightly warmer temps? Could that be it? I do have some slight growth in areas. Any ideas would be appreciated. I did it all myself. Starting early spring (MN) I went all in. After de-thatching and aerating, I mixed 20lbs of seed with top soil and laid it down with a peat moss spreader. Then I did 2-5 more layers of soil. I rigged up an above ground sprinkler system with hoses, timers, and pop-up sprinklers with spike bases. The house was built in 2020 and the grass was struggling in the backfill. Nearly zero black dirt was put down. I put nearly 8 yards of dirt down. I think I'm around 2800-3000 sq feet. I know now is not the right time and I’ll be waiting until fall, but I’m antsy and was hoping to get some recommendations on grass seed for overseeding. Im in zone 5a and my lawn is currently tall fescue and kbg mix. My lawn pretty much gets full sun with some shade mixed from the fence as the sun moves across the sky. Googling obviously pulls up a ton of brands, but I was wondering if this community had a particular brand they found worked best. We are on clay soil so last year I raised the patio and path by 5-10cm relative to the previous lawn level. Earlier this year I scarified, cut as short as possible, aerated and repeated ad nauseum. I have since added nice, friable topsoil on the sandier side, one bull bag at a time compressing, allowing to settle and compressing again until I’m up to the level of the hard landscaping. Does this look ready for seed? Is there anything more I should do first? And how early will I get away with - I want it at a point that it can be left by the end of April ideally, as in not needing daily watering. Why YSK: Depending on where you live in the world, avocado is often sold as this one thing that is the same as any other avocado. It's not! Avocado has incredible an genetic diversity and does not grow true from seed. Sometimes this "not showing what kind of avocado you're getting" is used maliciously to sell shit tasting avocado. Avocado can taste terribly even when perfectly ripe depending on the variant and growing process. I've seen this malicious type of labeling more prominent in Europe, where avocado can be extremely expensive and a complete gamble in terms of quality. Every avocado plant grown from seed produces a new variant that may taste great, meh or terrible. What producers do to try to stabilize taste, is to essentially clone other avocado plants that are known to taste well (grafting). If you slap a label to your particular variety of avocado you get things like Hass, Fuerte, Reed, etc. More info on this genetic variability: "Reasons for the use of clonal avocado rootstocks around the world". and "The unpleasant flavor hinders acceptability of some avocado varieties". And here's a list from 1915 that lists 86 different varieties of avocado and what are they notable for. Imagine how many varieties we have now! Some varieties taste great but spoil quickly or are hard to grow. Some are easy to grow but taste like shit. Two avocados might look similarly but taste wildly different. To add to the genetic complexity, changes in the soil conditions, height, humidity, temperature, water, pests, location, season, etc. can also affect taste. Some city people came out and repaired part of our driveway and threw down some grass seed. That stuff grew in immediately and thick and has never had a single problem with ZERO effort. My grass which is right next to it just can't seem to live, ever.
