What's wrong with my sister's arm? Is it related to her schizophrenia? (Potential self harm? - she is completely non-communicative, usually immobile so this would be huge) Could also use advice on her near catatonic state?
19F 5'4" 98 lbs (weight is her weight before schizophrenia, she hasn't been weighed since but I put this for the automod, I'd guess her as quite a bit heavier now) dx: schizophrenia, non-verbal/non-communicative (doesn't speak or use ASL), immobile. **no** diagnosed physical conditions including no skin conditions. Meds: Seroquel, Effexor. Eta: She's supposed to start lovenox next week. Effexor: 262.5 mg a day. Seroquel: 300 mg a day. No other medications except a daily multivitamin (one a day women's petites, if that matters, in my head the smaller size is easier for her to swallow but maybe I'm delusional). Hi. My 19 year old younger sister had no mental (or physical issues) throughout childhood and teenage years until being diagnosed with schizophrenia at 18. The symptoms that manifested first at 18 were social withdrawal and isolation. She stopped seeing her friends and while she lived in the family home, she started spending 90% of time in her room. She would only speak if spoken to. Her mood and personality changed quickly and abruptly. She was a social butterfly prior, extremely talkative, bubbly, and cheery. We, nor the psych team that initially saw her, knows what caused the changes in her and set into motion the onset of her schizophrenia and we were told sometimes it "just happens". No family history, no substance use, etc... Anyway, things progressed into her having auditory hallucinations, shortly after that she started having visual hallucinations. She also started having signs off paranoia, believing that people were trying to kidnap her and brainwash her (particularly the government), so she put foil up on her windows. She was having erratic jerky movements. And started saying incomprehensible made up words. She also expressed that she was suicidal and had a specific plan to end her life. My parents thought she was possessed (they're religious) and they started praying with her. At this time she was still verbal and responsive, but would never leave the house. I told my parents I was taking my sister to a church service but took her to urgent care at the hospital. They sent us to the ER. Because she had a suicide plan, they 5150'd her. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia and started on seroquel and effexor. When I went home and told my parents what I did, they kicked me out onto the streets. My sister was allowed visitors, I visited, but my parents didn't. I stayed with friends for a while, couch surfing. The hospital described my sister as a complex case and she ended up staying in the psychiatric ward for a couple of months. She was starting to do really well in her last few weeks in the psychiatric ward, became more like her pre-schizophrenic self. Her funny, sweet, and talkative self. I was saving money for my own place but didn't have enough yet, so when she left the hospital she was back at my parent's place (my friends couldn't accommodate her). I wasn't allowed to see her and they took away her cell phone and computer so she could only talk to my parents. My parents don't believe in medical intervention because they live by faith and God's healing. So they did not allow her to continue the medication and she was forced to stop them abruptly/didn't wean off of them. I called them often to ask about her and as time went on they told me she was doing worse, her symptoms were back with a vengeance. Still believing her to be possessed (alleging her tattoos opened her up to possession) they had an exorcism performed on her. I won't talk about that in details because it's irrelevant and I don't want to open that can of worms. I wasn't present and I tried to stop it but couldn't. My parents stopped updating me on her, wouldn't answer my calls. I was able to get an apartment a couple of weeks later, and I went to my parents house and physically took my sister despite their opposition. At this point, she was completely non-verbal, non-communicative, and immobile; according to my parents she'd been that way for only a couple days but I have no way of knowing. She was soiled and dehydrated. I changed and cleaned her and I took her back to the hospital for psychiatric help and they coaxed her to talk but she wouldn't. They gave her IV fluids. And she saw what I believe to be: a crisis team, social worker, and a psychiatrist. She did not speak or write anything down on the piece of paper. She was essentially catatonic but they decided she didn't need emergency care, which I really, really, really don't understand. They told me to take her to a pcp and ask for a psychiatric referral. So, I got her in with my pcp (family doctor). She turned 19. She saw my pcp and became her patient, and we are waiting to get in with an outpatient psychiatrist she can see long-term after our pcp sent out the referral (she did this right away on the first visit). This was a whole process and really difficult because she was basically catatonic and so it was impossible to know what schizophrenic symptoms she was experiencing. I tried to become my sister's medical power of attorney but was told I couldn't easily become hers because my sister wouldn't/couldn't sign off on that. Pcp did try contacting my parents (I don't know if she went against HIPAA to do this? Since my sister was 19? Or if this was proper next of kin protocol? I didn't question it, in case she was doing it under the table kind of thing as a favour to us) but in any case: they refused to help in any capacity. I had to go through a court process for conservatorship. I petitioned the court for a temporary conservatorship and got it. During this court process she was hospitalized again. (Not here for legal advice, just medical please). I worked with their patient advocate and an attorney. They kept her for 21 days in which they put her back on Effexor and Seroquel, then they released her back into my care. Which I also really don't understand. Why wouldn't they keep her in a psychiatric ward when there was NO progress to her near catatonic state???? I simultaneously filed the permanent petition when I did the temporary one, I was interviewed by a court investigator, and I'm waiting for the court hearing now. My long term significant other has been paying for everything: our housing needs, legal bills, her medical bills, etc... I work very part time hours to try to help (only 1-2 hours at a time at a close friend's family business because I try not to leave my sister alone. I dropped out of full time college to take care of her but I've been taking some online classes. I don't have much work experience so haven't been able to find a proper wfh job.) But here's how my sister's "basically" catatonic state is - I keep saying basically/essentially because she isn't FULLY catatonic I guess - she chews and swallows: she doesn't talk at all or have any facial expressions, doesn't write anything down if given a paper and pencil, never holds/grasps anything in her hands, she's immobile and has no reaction to her environment (she can't/won't(?) walk on her own, I have to move her around which I do by "fireman carrying" her - yes I literally even did then when she was discharged from the hospital to get her to my car, and the staff saw no problem with that??? They didn't think hey, wait, maybe we should keep this patient hospitalized??) My boyfriend and I have tried to "human crutch" (two-person assisted walk) but she will not walk/move her legs. She uses an adult diaper, I clean and change her, I bathe her (on my own, boyfriend of course doesn't assist with this), and I feed her. To feed her I have to place a small cold spoon on her bottom lip and I gently stroke the outside of her lip with my fingertip (hospital showed me how to do this), this gets her to open her mouth (not sure if that counts as a form of mobility?), when I put food in her mouth she will chew and swallow (also not sure if this counts as mobility?). She drinks water from a syringe (without a needle)... This is what the hospital told me to do: sit her fully upright, fill the syringe with lukewarm water, tap the syringe to remove air bubbles, slide tip of syringe into side of her mouth, point towards her inner cheek, administer by slowly pushing plunger pause and allow her to swallow after each squirt. I keep the syringe thoroughly clean. Our pcp doesn't normally do virtual since covid but makes an exception for her and has refilled her psychiatric medications (only had to refill once since she was discharged from the hospital - they discharged her with an rx). To give her the medications I use the feeding method, pcp says it's okay that she dry swallows them. I will move her from her bed, to the couch with the tv on, or to a chair (inside) facing the glass balcony doors so she can see outside. I don't know if there's actually any point in this? I don't know if her brain is even processing anything? I am not a caregiver or psw. I have no experience in this. I feel I have no help (besides my boyfriend). I don't know what to do at this point. The local hospital has been no help and as you can probably imagine taking her anywhere is difficult but I'm willing to do anything or go anywhere to help my sister. Would it be worth it to take her to a different hospital or will every hospital dismiss her or accept her as a patient but only very temporarily before releasing her back to my care? If I have to take care of my sister like this for the rest of my life I will but I can't help but think somewhere, somehow she could get a higher level of care? I love her so much but I think she should be in a hospital permanently? Is that even a thing? I'm only a little older than my sister, I just don't think I'm qualified to help her. I don't understand why they didn't keep her? Or put her in some kind of long term home? I asked my pcp about it and she just told me it doesn't work that way, so how does it work? Today I came home from work and noticed my sister's arm is like this? Some kind of rash or something? Or to me: it kind of looks like scratch marks? So I'm wondering if it's possible that she did it to herself? I'm actually hoping that is the case because that would mean she is actually feeling something and can actually move her limbs, even if it's a feeling of anger or something, something is better than nothing if that makes sense... Because she normally doesn't express feeling anything at all and normally doesn't move at all. She doesn't even look at you if you say her name so this would be so huge. I booked an appointment with our pcp for her to be seen Thursday but I thought maybe I could get an answer here before that? Since being back home, she hasn't scratched her arm or moved. (Her tattoos were done **before** this mental health crisis). I have absolutely never, ever ever ever scratched her or hurt her in any way. ETA: I replied to comments here Eta 2: It completely slipped my mind but: My pcp is putting her on lovenox specifically because of how immobile my sister is. Not going to lie, I am squeamish about needles, like I got a tetanus vaccine as recommended by my pcp and I literally threw up at the sight of the needle. So this will be a tough one, but of course I'll do it for my sister, even if I puke every time. I know the risk is her getting a dvt and it's important. My pcp wants to show me how to administer it into my sister's abdomen, so the plan was for me to have the rx filled and to take it to my sister's next appointment (we scheduled an in-person one that lands next Tuesday a few days ago, but I bumped that up to this Thursday). However, my boyfriend and I are planning to take my sister to a hospital or academic learning center in a large city before that as per recommendations here. ETA 3: Just an update: we've gone through our normal evening/night routine since I posted this and she's in bed sleeping now. Made her dinner (homemade puree of peeled, washed and steamed sweet potato; cooked lentils that I thoroughly washed and soaked overnight before cooking (I also changed the water from the soaking water); cooked chicken, cubed and steamed with the sweet potato, temperature checked to safe standards with a thermometer, and some uncooked fresh green peas that I shelled and washed thoroughly). Everything I cook her is organic (I don't eat organic myself because it isn't feasible financially so there is non-organic food cooked in the house on shared equipment). She eats three meals a day. Breakfast is always oatmeal blended with baby formula as per pcp recommendation and sometimes I blend it with cooked eggs. Lunch is usually pureed steamed fruit and vegetables. Dinner is usually pureed steamed sweet potato, cooked peas/beans, and a cooked meat if I can budget it. I make these in a baby blender (Baby Brezza). She drinks 64 fluid ounces a day safely and carefully given by a 2 ounce needless syringe (sold as 60ml so technically over 2 ounces). Never squirted directly toward the back of her throat, but rather against her cheek. I rotate cheeks every session just in case it's some sort of negative pressure on them. Water is the only fluid I give her. She always eats and drinks sitting upright. I do put some minimal spices in her food so it tastes as good it can for what it is (I don't know if can even consider the taste of things anymore but whatever); she hated spicy food and it turned her red so never anything spicy like chili pepper🌶️ spice or anything that could be the culprit for the redness. Spices were just a little bit of garlic salt and dried oregano today. But sometimes I put thyme, parsley, dill, or onion powder. Then I did some assisted ROM exercises for her: arm lifts and knee-to-chest. Then we sat on the couch and I put on some music she used to like, not sure if her brain can register it so she can appreciate if still but I do if anyway. I cut and filed her nails (fingers, and toes [cause who knows]) extra short in case she is scratching herself. I painted them too (OPI - Infinite Shine: Beach Party Teal Dawn). I gave her a bath. I went out and picked up some bath products that may help whatever is going on with her skin. I used Aveeno Fragrance-Free Skin Relief Body Wash with Triple Oat Complex, CeraVe shampoo and conditioner (separate products that I used separately, not 2 in 1), Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion (With prebiotic oat, paraben free, fragrance free), The Honest Company Fragrance-Free Conditioning Hair Detangler (bought this previously). Used a MainBasics shower loofah. Brushed her hair out with just a regular old Wet brush. Her hair is down to her waist and very thick (she liked it long) so I always blow dry it (a really old Revlon hair dryer, not sure which model). Sometimes I curl it but didn't today (really old Remington one, don't know model). I sometimes do her makeup but not often (when I do it's all Covergirl products: Trublend foundation, eye enhancers shadow palette in natural, lash blast mascara, continuous color lipstick in rose quar). Covergirl was her favorite. I don't leave the makeup on long. Just dress her up in the nicest dresses I can afford, then do her makeup, take a few photos of her (I don't post them anywhere or send to any friends or family since I don't have her consent), then remove the makeup and put her in comfier clothes. She wears 100% organic fabric clothes - I bought a few everyday outfits for her from Quince but I splurged for a couple of pricier dresses from Pact for when I dress her up especially nicely. I change her clothes to daytime clothes during the day and pajamas at night. Our pcp said I could just put her in hospital gowns 24/7 but emotionally I cannot do that. Like food, I do not wear organic clothes because of financial reasons, so non-organic clothes are also present in the home environment. Her diapers are Depend brand, I always use the Night Defense ones (in medium) even during the day because it has the maximum absorbency. The package says 12 hrs protection and my pcp said with her fluid intake her urine outtake could cover 24 hours even but I'd never let her sit in a soaked diaper all day and night; I don't want her to get an infection or rash. I change her 4 times a day (despite the ludicrous cost of adult diapers). Her bowel movements are once a day, usually between dinner and bed time. I check her diaper often for feces. Anyway, then I brushed her teeth (RiseWell Mineral Toothpaste), Beautiful Mind Biodegradable Floss Sticks with Strong Bamboo Charcoal Thread & Vegan Cornstarch Handle). Then I put her to bed (Naturepedic bed - serenade organic hybrid mattress, Naturepedic organic latex pillow, Naturepedic organic mattress protector, Naturepedic Adagio mattress topper, Avocado branded sheets and pillow case. Avocado branded pajamas - Modal line tee & and pant in colors in Rosewater or Navy, Navy tonight). And I read her a few pages from one of her favorite books until she fell asleep, just a fun fantasy series - nothing that would scare her or something. Again, I don't know if she is even aware I'm reading but that's okay. Obviously not affiliated with any of these brands. Just gave all and every specific detail in case one of you is like, "Oh hey, xyz brand/product can cause rashes or medical issues! That's the culprit!" or "You shouldn't be doing that specific exercise you're making her worse!" or "Feeding her that is making her ill!" or whatever else. I keep careful record of everything every day in a diary/journal: food and water intake, exercises done, etc... She has not scratched or moved herself since I made this post. Even when I left the buy the bath products. When I came back the lip gloss had not smeared (someone recommended I put a colorful lip gloss on her finger tips to see if it smudges or ends up on her arm). My boyfriend and I are up coming up with a plan right now to get her to a hospital or academic medical center as per recommendations here. Please don't comment saying the things I do for her like curling her hair or doing her makeup and nails or dressing her up is stupid or a waste of time because she's essentially catatonic. My sister was the ultimate girly girl. She loved those things so much. She was totally that girl in high school who would wake up an hour early every single day just to do her hair and makeup. She can't do those things now, so I do them for her. If she's aware and cognizant of what's going on then great, if she isn't then.. That's okay, it makes me happy to do it for her. To answer some of the common questions being messaged to me: Has she been tested for PANDAS? Does she have any medical history? Vaccination history and medicine history? She has not been tested for PANDAS but I looked up what it is and will 100% ask about it when we get her help in the morning. She does have very little medical history as an infant. Just edited to add this in case it matters but her infant history was unremarkable, just some maternal health details, birth details: as in delivery details and newborn stats (birth weight, length, head circumference), my parents declined tests like newborn screening tests by signing an official waiver. They weren't against seeing doctors at that time but were antivaxx + anti med already. They did not do any newborn checkups. Within a couple months of her birth my parents joined a different place of worship and became radical then nothing else regarding medical history except she kind of has.. some "medical history" and I'm an idiot for not disclosing that but we were just seen by a medical student and not a literal licensed doctor so she doesn't have any formal, confirmed medical history after birth and I didn't think to talk about it because it isn't her current health status. When she was 8 she fell ill. My friend's older sister was in medical school and she came over to evaluate my sister because my parents wouldn't take her to a doctor (she evaluated her without my parents knowledge). I was present the entire time she was being evaluated. She had a headache, sore throat, and red rash on her chest and stomach. This rash ended up later spreading to neck as well. She had a white tongue when evaluated then it was red later on. My friend's sister thought it was some type of strep and recommended we go to a doctor for antibiotics but we we were really young and did not have any healthcare coverage and barely money. I'm sure we would have qualified because we were a low income household but my parents not believing in science or medicine never tried to enroll us in anything. I got sick with whatever she had within a couple days, same symptoms plus vomiting. Whatever it was cleared up on its own in about a week or so. I had a little bit of money from handwashing dishes at a really dodgy local inn. Naturally it was under the table (they paid me $2 an hour) and I didn't have nearly enough for us to see a doctor and get medication. Parents also got sick but no rash. We all recovered fine... Or so I thought before this PANDAS thing. I did not mention this or include that rash as a skin condition in my original post because we fully recovered from that; I thought I was only supposed to mention current diagnoses and she's not had any rash since then until now. Maybe irrelevant but we also had chicken pox as kids (also "diagnosed" by the same med student - so I don't know how reliable or accurate that diagnosis was). Again we didn't see a licensed doctor. That also cleared up within a week or so though. She presumably broke a finger as a kid (presumably because again no doctor, and no med student this time) and my parents just taped her finger to the next one. I think it healed fine? As a kid she would get what we guessed to be motion sickness when we were driving. She'd get dizzy, and had noticeably rapid breathing and she'd throw up every time we drove anywhere. By teenage years this was resolved on its own. We were "home schooled" (we basically taught ourselves using the curriculum that was supposed to be taught to us lol because our "teacher" was for all intents and purposes useless and we had a bit of a "class" because my parent's religious friends also "home schooled" their kids). None of us (to my knowledge, still in contact with most of my "classmates") received any childhood vaccines because our parents are antivaxx. She has no other notable "medical history" - just some unremarkable infancy stuff. I'm actively working to getting myself vaccinated and I got my sister vaccinated for the following (this was done on a catch-up schedule as per pcp: tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (only one I have so far, I focused on my sister); measles, mumps, rubella; hepatitis B; Polio. She's never taken any medication, even historically (to my knowledge), outside of the NaCl fluids (if that counts), Effexor, Seroquel, and the multivitamin (if that counts). She never received medication to help with the motion sickness, and we were both never administered things like Tylenol because of my parents religious beliefs. Do you take your sister on outings? Does she have a any resemblance of a social life anymore? Pcp recommended I avoid doing this unless necessary (like going to see her), so no. I do take her out onto the balcony for some fresh air and sunlight during the afternoon but generally I don't take her anywhere. She dropped all of her friends when she became reclusive because she thought they were spying on her for the government. So I don't let any of them visit her in case my sister is cognizant underneath and still has that fear of the spy thing. I do chat with her previously very close friends via text once in a while. We are 100% no contact with my parents and our extended family at this point. I don't generally let anyone except my boyfriend into the apartment but we've had two water damage specialists/contractors working on some restoration and repair. I intentionally hired women for this because I knew I'd have to work some of the time they would be at the apartment. No disrespect intended toward men, I am not some extreme misandrist or something, it's just that I felt more comfortable with that dynamic. I do not even let my boyfriend be alone with her, because as much as you trust someone: it's my opinion that realistically you never know what someone is capable of. I have my best friend stay at the apartment when the specialists/contractors are there to keep an eye on things, but she hasn't noticed anything off during that time. Did your sister have a romantic life? Boyfriends? Potential stds? Any SA type of trauma? I'm not going to go into many details on this because I'm already receiving disgusting messages. She is a virgin, she had a high school boyfriend for 3 months who she only kissed (yes, I'm sure about this). ETA: we didn't attend a physical high school, I meant high school years in terms of homeschool curriculum where we had our homeschooled peers including her then-boyfriend. No SA history that I know of. So, I don't think she has any stds. Did your sister experience physical abuse, childhood or domestic via a partner? Yes, we both received "physical discipline" as kids but it was to an extent that I now believe it to be abuse. I remember an instance where my sister got hit with a cast iron skillet, and another where she was hit with a ruler until it literally broke. We were good, polite kids but we subjected to things of that nature any time we made any mistakes. No domestic abuse via a partner that I am aware of. What religion are your parents (Catholic or Christian? What denomination?) What happened during the exorcism? Not disclosing their specific religion or their particular denomination. Also not disclosing exact or graphic details of the exorcism but will say their "method" is primarily to make the "host's" body as agonizing and inhospitable as possible to the "demons". They also try to break the "will" of the "demons" possessing the "host". The former is done physically. The latter is done through deprivation. Thanks again everyone. It's really appreciated. submitted by /u/AbjectTooth5258 to r/AskDocs [link] [comments]

Best hair dryer Reddit users actually recommend in 2026 — budget to Shark FlexStyle, broken down honestly
Trying to find the best hair dryer Reddit users actually trust in 2026 is harder than it should be — every list pushes Dyson on everyone equally, regardless of hair type or budget. Here's an honest breakdown without the hype. Short answer: most people don't need to spend more than $30 –$60. Premium picks like the Shark FlexStyle make sense for specific buyers - not automatically for everyone. The "what type of dryer do you actually need" question This matters more than brand or price. A 2-in-1 brush dryer is completely different from a diffuser dryer or a straight blow dryer. Blowout and volume? → Round brush dryer Curly or wavy hair? → Traditional dryer with diffuser Just fast drying, no styling? → High-wattage traditional dryer Multiple styles, minimal heat damage? → Premium all-in-one system Pick based on hair type first. Everything else follows. Best picks for blowouts and volume The REVLON One-Step Volumizer is the most consistently recommended 2-in-1 in Reddit beauty threads — and it earns it. One tool replaces a separate brush and dryer. Works best for straight-to-wavy hair wanting volume. Not the right pick for tightly curly hair. The REVLON Turbo 1875W is worth considering if you just need fast drying without the brush combo — strong airflow, no fuss. Best picks for curly and wavy hair The Wavytalk Hair Dryer with Diffuser keeps coming up specifically for curly and wavy hair. Lightweight, solid diffuser included, multiple attachments. Key tip: low heat, scrunch upward, let the airflow do the work — the diffuser is genuinely good, not an afterthought. The REVLON Infrared Ionic is the better fit for damaged or color-treated hair dealing with frizz. Infrared heat tends to be gentler on the hair shaft, and the ionic design targets frizz reduction. Best everyday and professional picks The INFINITI PRO by CONAIR 1875W is consistently underrated — distributes airflow well, dries faster than most expect, and works reliably every day without drama. The slopehill Professional Ionic 1800W stands out for quiet operation — noticeably lower motor noise than most in this price range. The BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium 2000W is the pick for genuine salon-level power at home. Higher wattage means faster drying but also higher heat exposure — better matched to thick or coarser hair. Fine or color-treated hair will want a heat protectant in the routine. Best budget picks KISS 1875W Tourmaline Ceramic — hard to argue with under $25 for basic daily drying Revlon Compact 1875W — lightweight and simple, though results run slightly frizzier than the full-size Revlon Worth considering for specific needs: CONFU Ionic 1600W for travel, SHRATE Ionic for sensitive scalp types Is the Shark FlexStyle actually worth it? For specific buyers — yes. It combines drying, curling, and volumizing in one system with temperature regulation built to limit heat damage. If you currently own a separate dryer, curling wand, and volumizing brush, it can realistically replace all three. If you only need a dryer — it's more than you need at that price. What I'd avoid Skip no-name ionic dryers under $18 — motor quality and long-term durability just aren't there. Also avoid cheap 2-in-1 combo tools from brands with no track record; heat distribution on budget combos tends to be uneven where it matters most. Best hair dryer picks Best overall 2-in-1: REVLON One-Step Volumizer Best for curly/wavy: Wavytalk with Diffuser Best for frizz/damage: REVLON Infrared Ionic Best everyday reliable: INFINITI PRO by CONAIR Best professional power: BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium 2000W Best premium all-in-one: Shark FlexStyle Best under $25: KISS 1875W Tourmaline Ceramic For most people — the REVLON One-Step Volumizer is where I'd start. It covers the most common use case, works well without a learning curve, and holds up consistently in long-term reviews. Upgrade from there based on your specific hair type. What are you guys currently using? Anyone switched from a budget dryer to the Shark FlexStyle and actually felt the difference was worth it? submitted by /u/Effective-Heart28 to r/SmartTechChoices [link] [comments]

Short hair styling struggles, is a hot air brush actually useful
I’ve had short hair for a while now and styling it every morning is honestly getting annoying. Straightener feels too harsh sometimes, regular blow dryer makes my hair puff up, and using a round brush on short hair is way harder than people make it look lol. I keep seeing people recommend hot air brushes but most reviews online feel fake or sponsored. I just want something simple that actually works for short hair without frying it or taking 40 mins every morning. My hair gets messy fast and some days it sticks out in random directions no matter what products I use. I’m trying to find a reliable brand that’s actually worth the money and not another overhyped tool that dies after 3 months. Anyone here with short hair actually using one daily? Does it really make styling easier or is it mostly made for longer hair? Would really appreciate real experiences before I waste more money. submitted by /u/Electronic_Damage_47 to r/BeautyGear [link] [comments]

Frizzy / puffy hair that gets messy easily — looking for product & tool recommendations (not natural remedies)
Hi everyone, I’m trying to improve the condition and manageability of my hair, but I’m struggling a bit. My hair is relatively long (and I want to keep growing it), but it tends to be frizzy, puffy, and very easy to mess up, even shortly after styling. It doesn’t hold shape well and gets messy quite quickly. Just to be clear, I’m not looking for natural remedies (oils, homemade treatments, etc.). I’m more interested in commercial products and tools, including professional or salon-level options if needed. I often see amazing transformations here, so I feel like I’m probably missing the right routine or products. 👉 I’d really appreciate recommendations for: shampoos / conditioners that help reduce frizz and improve control leave-in conditioners or treatments that don’t weigh hair down styling products (creams, serums, anti-frizz products, etc.) tools (brushes, hair dryers, attachments, etc.) simple routines for keeping long hair smoother and more manageable Thanks a lot in advance for any advice 🙏 submitted by /u/Onentendlecoucou to r/finehair [link] [comments]

How to style an elderly white woman's short hair?
Hi, all! Please give me grace with the words I am using, I can't for the life of me figure out what the name of my grandma's haircut is called. I am going to visit my grandma in the hospital tomorrow and style her hair for her. She has the stereotypical tapered on the bottom, slightly longer on top, but generally short and cropped, often permed haircut of elderly women in the United States. She currently does not have her hair permed. She normally has it done at the hair salon once a week. She usually has it styled with a slight wave. I am definitely not a hair stylist, but I am baseline competent with hair. My best guess about how to accomplish how she normally wears it is a small round brush, blow dryer, volumizing hairspray?? Would you say that is accurate? She used to use curlers sometimes in the past, but has moved away from that in favor of her current hairstyle. Thank you so much for any and all help and suggestions. submitted by /u/BeanMom19 to r/AskHairstylists [link] [comments]

Blow dryer brush for short hair?
I see lots of posts for them in general but they are almost always with long hair! I currently have a Conair one I love (see photo) but they don’t make it anymore! I tried the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus 2.0 but it is HARD on your head. My scalp was sore. And I use a dryer brush almost daily so I know it wasn’t me! I read people like the Dryshot but then reviews aren’t awesome. (I know my hair is mostly pinned in that photo but gives a general idea of length.) submitted by /u/ffxprincess to r/Hair [link] [comments]

Product Recommendations for Short, Non-porous, coarse, medium density "frizzy straight" hair
I have super thick hair that is EXTREMELY non-porous. So much so that I keep a pixie cut because if it gets any longer than a bob, it takes way too long to even get wet for washing in a shower. I always get a layered pixie with sides cut really short and side bangs. The front and top layers of the cut sometimes have a lot of curl, ranging from waves to baby hairs that are perfect spirals so I started testing CGM products and methods about a year ago. I know I'm not in for a full set of sausage curls, but would love recommendations for how to let my natural curls/waves shine (and stay throughout the day, which is hard because I have a lot of volume at the top) Here's what works & what hasn't: Current Routine *wash every other day (more like 3x a week right now) with OGX Rosemary & Mint Shampoo. Hair is always washed upside down because I use a shower seat. I have a super dry scalp that will get irritated if I go more than 2 or 3 days without a wash and tea tree products help. They recently switched to rosemary and it's not as effective on the scalp so I'm browsing other tea tree containing products. *Use the matching conditioner on the ends of my hair and leave in while I scrub down my face & body & other shower things. Rinse out upside down. *first thing out of the shower, I wet brush and apply a dime size dollop (quarter if my hair is shaggy) Not Your Mother's All Eyes on Me leave in conditioner to my ends & the curly pieces. Air dry, and go about my day. Any excess product, or any delay in putting it in, and I can tell within a few hours that it's just sitting on top of my hair making things sticky *In the southern summers if I know I'm going out and risking frizz, I'll use just a little bit John Frieda Frizz-Ease. Products/Methods I've tried and disliked - Not Your Mother's curl mousse - didn't hold or define any curls, just made my hair feel sticky, even applied on wet hair - göt2b styling creme - not bad if I want a slicked back Natalie Portman situation, but didn't do much for texture -microfiber towel - I wanted to like this, I really did, but it didn't...towel anything? Even patting my skin dry with it, it just didn't even absorb anything. wrapping my thick hair in it just meant I had to later that day sleep on wet hair, which I also hate - Plopping: Didn't do anything for my curls, curls didn't seem to hold better or form better, and made me feel even more damp with the microfiber. Like the Damp sidekick in Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog? Just...so damp - Squish to Condish: only works when my hair has grown out a little Other considerations: I'm chronically ill so I am still trying to keep things as low maintenance as I can, I just get kinda sad when I have lil curlies in the morning, and by the afternoon they're deflated. Want to embrace my hair's texture. Only other concern is that my hair runs dry, because it practically deflects liquid. Prefer sulfate free shampoo so it doesn't burn my eyes while washing upside down. Lol When I say low porosity I mean it's almost like my hair can sense intentions with products and subvert them. Hairspray has never held unless used at theatrical levels. Insane amounts of hairspray. Gel has never held either. Hair dryers? None have met expectations unless I clip up each layer of hair and dry one at a time. Used to semi-permanent dye it lately but not in a few years. I switched to morning showers so I wouldn't have to sleep on wet pillows. submitted by /u/Reverent_Birdwatcher to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

Help me choose a new hair dryer. I think I’ve narrowed it down to these 4.
I’m really struggling with decision paralysis. I had a [Tyche Chic](https://supersistersbeauty.com/products/nicka-k-new-york-tyche-chic-hair-dryer-with-diffuser-green-hdch03?srsltid=AfmBOop3is7VCtmxCC3zubjFEvAYSfzh2eLYlqdvTEwg-vnkjTkZXQfx) from Marshall’s, and was overall happy with it but the diffuser kept falling off. It was my first dryer after embracing my curls. Then my dog chewed up the diffuser attachment.. I purchased a [confu hair dryer](https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Lightweight-Hairdryer-Blowdryer-Concentrator/dp/B089SLN2DC?ref\_=ast\_sto\_dp) from Amazon as a replacement. I hate it. The diffuser seems to suck my hair towards it. Things that are important to me: A short nozzle- I hover diffuse and have short arms. I can’t do something with a long nozzle. On the quieter side. The volume of the two I have are fine, but no louder. Lightweight Longer prongs for drying my roots —- I have shoulder length hair that’s low density with medium/coarse strands. I’m on the wavier side of curly, with medium-high porosity hair. Routine: clarify every other wash with The Doux, condition with NYM Daily Nutrition, rinse and add small about of knot today, add gel (currently TreLux Reflex topped with Innersense Curl Memory), section & brush style w/bounce curl brush and hover diffuse. I break cast with a satin bonnet, and sleep in the Moonstone Seven satin sleeper submitted by /u/smontres to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

Help my little nanny out 🤞🏼 What hair straightener or drying styler would be best for elderly/disabled people that struggle to lift their arms up?
first post I've ever done but I thought reddit would be a good place to ask? my grandmother struggles to lift her arms very high, or with things too heavy. she can no longer do her hair and has cut it (from bit shy of shoulder length to quite short) so that she can just shower and give it a ruffle. I gave her my old hair styler (shark flex style) because I thought she would be able to do her hair again as it has the option to use the brush with the dryer straight so the idea was she wouldn't have to lift her arms too high but sadly she gave it back to me because it was too heavy for her. I understand people age but I genuinely can't watch my nanny not be able to do her hair. does anyone have any ideas, or advice on what I could look into that is extremely light and still a good styler? or any ideas on what a nanny could do with shorter than shoulder length hair? I have only ever had a shark flex style and a shark glam myself and both are too heavy but thats about as much help I am 🤷🏻♀️ thank you for reading 🙏🏼 submitted by /u/PodLengthy-9533 to r/Haircare [link] [comments]

Hair advice needed for a wedding!!!!
I just cut my hair recently short and for this wedding hair is up to us. So I am wanting to bring out my natural waves. What products can I use to help bring those out? I have thin hair that is curls and waves when wet but dries straight, wavy, and a couple of defined curls. I have a blow dryer, old straightener, and a round brush curler. I’m investing in a small round brush as well as curlers but I don’t know what size. Photos are of my hair styles and not styled. submitted by /u/StinkBug1098 to r/femalehairadvice [link] [comments]

Best blow dry brush for short hair?
Hi, I recently cut my hair into a bob. Previously, for my long mid-back hair, I had been using the Revlon One-Step hair dryer brush, but now the barrel size is too big for me to style my hair effectively. Any suggestions for a brush that would be as reliable/good as the Revlon, but better suited for short hair? Thanks! submitted by /u/ukrainianironbelly92 to r/Hair [link] [comments]

Beginner with short natural hair on a budget, need advice🙏
Short natural hair and no idea where to start! Help Hi everyone. I’m a young Black woman looking for some hair advice. I cut off my locs last year and since then I’ve mostly been doing crochet styles because it’s affordable and I can do it myself. I don’t know how to braid yet but I want to start learning. After my current style, I really want to start wearing and styling my natural fro. My hair isn’t super short, but it’s also not long enough to brush back into a bun. I also don’t a blow dryer / hand dryer tool to stretch my hair, so I feel kind of limited. I’ve looked into natural hair salons for wash and gos or trims but they’re too expensive. As a grad student I can’t afford $100 trims or expensive products that may not work. I have a few gels, mousse, a comb or pick, and some basic oils. When I watch YouTube videos for styling short natural hair they always use products I don’t have. Finger coils don’t work on my hair at all and it doesn’t coil. I don’t know if it’s the products, my technique, or the fact that my hair is untrimmed and uneven. I feel stuck and don’t know where to start. Any advice or tips would really help as I’m starting to feel discouraged. Thank you!! submitted by /u/girlyfans101 to r/BlackHair [link] [comments]

Hair System Maintenance Tips That Worked for Me
I stopped treating every base and every glue the same, got a lot more careful with removal instead of just slapping more adhesive on top, and started tracking what actually happens on my own scalp. My toupees last longer now and don’t randomly die at the front. I’ve been wearing hair systems for a while and got really tired of the same advice everywhere: “use sulfate-free shampoo, don’t scrub too hard, change your tape regularly.” Cool, but super generic. So I went down the rabbit hole — manufacturer guides, tech videos, totally ruining a few units — and changed my routine a lot. I’m not a pro or selling anything, just a fellow hair goblin trying to keep his carpet alive. The first big shift was realizing not all bases should be treated the same. Thin skin, lace, hybrids, mono, whatever — they all have different lifespans and tolerance for abuse. Those ultra-thin skin bases (the 0.03mm “feels like nothing on your head” kind) are not built for long wear and aggressive cleaning. I used to wear them as if they were tanks, then be mad when they died in a month. Now I treat them like “special occasion” units: short wears, very gentle removal, no scraping, and I don’t expect them to be my main everyday piece. If I want durability, I wear something thicker or a lace/mono combo. With lace or hybrids, my old mindset was “leave it on as long as possible because maintenance sucks.” Bad idea. Adhesive breaks down, seeps into the lace, gums up the knots, and the front starts shedding or looking weird. These days I aim to fully remove and clean roughly every week to week and a half instead of trying to stretch it to 3+ weeks. Less buildup in the base, less damage to the hair. Scalp prep was another huge one. I used to do a quick swipe with alcohol and then slam on tape. Now it’s more of a sequence. First, I get every bit of old adhesive off my head — not just the obvious stuff. I use a bit of solvent and a fine nit comb on my scalp to gently scrape out tiny glue bits from the stubble. Sounds obsessive, but it makes the surface way cleaner. Then I wash my scalp properly, like skin care, not “meh, it’s under the system, nobody sees it.” After that I make sure everything is completely dry. Damp skin + adhesive = slip, early lift, and weird breakdown. Once it’s dry, I do one more quick pass with alcohol only on the attachment area to remove oil right before bonding. When I follow all those steps, my bonds hold noticeably better at the hairline. When I rush it, I can tell within a couple of days. Adhesives were another place I was winging it. I used to grab whatever tape or glue I had and hope for the best. Now I match my adhesive to what I’m doing that week and to the base. Glue behaves differently on thin skin vs lace. Tape behaves differently on sweaty skin vs someone who sits at a desk all day. I also stopped believing the “2–4 week hold” marketing and started tracking reality. I literally put notes in my phone like: “Lace unit + X tape on sides, glue at front, gym 3x, started lifting on day 7.” After a month of that, it becomes really obvious which combos hate your scalp and which ones actually hold up. The most damage I used to do was during removal, not wearing. I think this is one of the most underrated parts. People obsess about the perfect bond and then absolutely brutalize the unit getting it off. I was guilty of peeling tape off lace like a sticker and then wondering why knots were popping and the hairline looked thin. Now I soak the base in solvent or at least saturate the adhesive and let it sit. Only when it’s really broken down do I start gently working the tape or glue off. On lace, I support the net with my fingers and wipe in the direction of the hair (roots to ends), instead of scrubbing in random directions. It feels slower, but over months it adds up to less stretching and fewer broken knots. I also make a habit of checking the front lace from underneath every few removals. If I can see adhesive creeping into the knots, that’s a sign I either left it on too long or that combo of glue and base isn’t ideal. When I see that, I adjust the next install by shortening the wear time or swapping products. That one little “flip it over and inspect it” habit has probably added weeks of life to each unit. Washing the hair itself changed a lot too. I treat it like a delicate garment instead of a dirty pan. I don’t even bother with shampoo until most of the adhesive is off the base. Shampoo + leftover glue just turns into a sticky paste that’s worse to remove. I wash with lukewarm water, never hot, especially on ventilation methods that don’t have real knots (like V-looped or injected hair) because those are easier to shed if you overdo heat and friction. When brushing, I only do it when the hair is either fully wet with conditioner or fully dry — never that half-damp, grab-and-yank situation. I start from the ends, work my way up, and support the base with my hand so I’m not pulling directly on it. Drying-wise, if I have time I air-dry. If I need a blow-dryer, I keep it moving and don’t fry the base or roots. I used to blast it like my own bio hair and that absolutely did not help longevity. I used to wear systems from Newtimes Hair. Their lace hair systems were the most durable one I'd ever worn. But it looks like they stopped selling to individuals, but only to salons. You gotta find out. Color maintenance snuck up on me. I didn’t realize how much UV, harsh shampoos, and heat were fading dark units until I compared photos over a couple of months. Now I try to wear a hat or cap if I know I’ll be in strong sun for a long time. I only use clarifying shampoo when the hair feels really coated, not every wash. And I keep a mental link between “how often did I curl/straighten this thing with heat?” and “how quickly did the color go flat or dry-looking?” More heat always means faster fade and more dryness, so I try to save heavy styling for when I actually need it. One thing that really helped my sanity was having one “everyday / sacrificial” unit and one “nice” unit. All experiments, heavy styling, and new products get tried on the sacrificial first. If it tolerates it, the good unit gets the same treatment. It’s way less stressful than testing everything on the one piece you’re emotionally attached to. Then there are the small quality-of-life upgrades. I built a little “toupee toolbox” that just lives in my bathroom: nit comb, alcohol wipes, a small bottle of solvent, a few pre-cut tape strips, cotton pads, and a small mirror. If something lifts or I’m doing a full removal, I’m not running around the house hunting for stuff with my hairline half off. If the front starts to lift, I don’t just smear more glue on top of old glue anymore. I lift that tiny section, clean it properly, dry it, and rebond just that area. Takes a few extra minutes but avoids building up this huge crusty layer that eventually trashes the lace. Once a month or so, after removing the unit and cleaning it, I take a quick photo of the underside — especially the hairline and the highest stress areas. Looking back at those pics lets me see if shedding, fraying, or weird stretching suddenly got worse. If it did, I can usually tie it back to something I changed: different adhesive, pushing wear time longer, being rougher with brushing, etc. It’s like a maintenance log for your hair system. That’s pretty much my current routine. It’s still evolving, but my systems last closer to the “max” end of their expected lifespan now, and I don’t get as many sudden “why is my hairline dying?” surprises. If you’re wearing a toupee or system, I’m genuinely curious: what’s one weird or nerdy maintenance thing you do that you don’t usually see mentioned in the generic “be gentle” advice? submitted by /u/Ok_Revolution_2108 to r/HairSystem [link] [comments]

Frustrated father at the end of my rope
This is my incredible, strong, beautiful, smart, sweet, strong willed almost 5 year old daughter. I can be long winded so I’ll try to keep this to bullet points. Please, I need some help! First two photos show her hair length, texture, weight, and the tangled knotted frizzy mess that gets created in her hair. I would say her hair is fine and wavy. A magnet for knots. Second two photos are what I try to do every night before bed after bath, but that usually only ends up happening 2 or 3 times a week. The biggest issues - she is about to start Kindergarten and idk how to get her out the door on time with presentable hair - she has a very sensitive head and gets very mad when we brush. She now wants us to basically only brush in the bath with a wet brush - my wife doesn’t want to cut it short. She would probably be okay with cutting off an inch or so to promote health but she won’t let us go shoulder length What we have tried - satin pillow case (satin bed sheet just arrived in the mail) - going to bed with it wet - going to bed with it dry - 4 kinds of kids detangling sprays - heat protection spray before blow drys - 3 different types of blow dryers - 8 different kids of shampoos and conditioners?? Lost count - I’ve wanted to sleep with a bun or braids but daughter says no :/. What I think the next step is - take her to a local stylist with specialty in this style of hair get recommended care and products. But I can’t find anyone locally I trust. So instead I am here. I hope you all can help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart in advance. I’m an open book!! Tell me what to do!! Sorry first post had wrong flair. Second didn’t have photos. All good now I think. submitted by /u/a_Food_lover to r/finehair [link] [comments]

Nervous about posting a selfie so I might delete this soon. Put my hair is as long as it's ever been and I never learned to take care of it. What do I do? How do I stop tangles? How do I know what kind of brush or comb to use? I don't even know enough to know what questions to ask.
For most of my life I never really kept short hair. It's never been this long either. Through high school and college I had an undercut and the top bit was about down to my chin. I often kept it long-ish relatively speaking for somebody who presents as a guy. But it's never been this long before. And during most of the time that it's been growing to this length I've kept it tied up. But now it's getting hard to even tie up because it's so big and so heavy. Eventually I'd like to donate it to one of those companies that makes wigs. But I want to be sure to take care of it in the meantime. All I do for hair care so far is just medicated dandruff shampoo two or three times a week. (And I've seen a number of posts on here warning against over shampooing. So I might be cutting back on that.) And I often use fructis leave-in conditioner. I've only just recently started trying to use a hair dryer. But I don't really have the attention span for that so usually just let it air dry instead. So I guess like the title says, where do I start with combs and brushes? I've broken so many combs already. Are there any particular products or oils I'm supposed to be putting in my hair? Should I learn how to braid it? Are there gender or neutral styles you would suggest for Shelby bearded guy that won't look too out of place on me? How does donating work? I'd like to do it eventually but I've never really researched it. Do they accept hair from older people with a few gray streaks? Where do I go and how do I do it? submitted by /u/kappakingtut2 to r/Haircare [link] [comments]

Damaged hair from Revlon blow dryer brush
I’ve had really healthy 3b curls for years and very rarely used heat since age 16. However last year straightened my hair a couple of times and curls always bounced back without damage. In October I used my friends Revlon heated blowdryer round brush, I was in a rush and didn’t think to look up how to use it and used it on wet hair 💀 Anyway after that my hair has never been the same. Over the months it’s become increasingly frizzy, dry and damaged. I’m noticing significant thinning and breakage. The curls don’t bounce back at all they’re constantly limp with many part not curling at all, even on wash day and when I use my usual products. It feels it’s been stripped from all its natural oils and moisture. lots of short hairs around face bottom of hair and top of head. The curls are stringy and frizzy stray hairs. I’m so devastated because I’ve spent years looking after my hair and one silly mistake I’ve ruined it. I had it trimmed in November and re trimmed the ends myself last month, although I think I’ve made it worse because the cut is super choppy and weirdly layered/ short at the front. But I just want to get some advice on products to use / what to do because I feel it’s progressingly getting worse still even months later, and I obviously haven’t used heat since apart from occasionally using a hair dryer. I would hate to have to cut it short. Is there anyway these broken hairs / my thickness will grow back if I don’t use heat again or I have I actually damaged my hair for life It’s hard to show the breakage in photos, but in the underneath area and around hair line, front of face and sides, chunks of hairs are actually short and broken. First picture is from 2 years ago. And the rest of from recently. I have ordered olaplex no3. Obviously I’m aware I can’t restore any heat damaged hair, but just looking for tips on preventing further breakage/ thinning, and maintain healthy hair growth without having to cut too much off! Posted the other day but it got deleted! :) Routine: Shampoo/ conditioner- garnier hair food Use Garnier hair food leave in conditioner, As I Am hair smoothie, eco gel (w/ argan oil)- used in this order on wet hair after shower, scrunch Dry with microfiber towel and air dry submitted by /u/Beautiful-Macaron733 to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

So many men put such little effort into their appearance
The average woman I see has put so much effort into her looks. She’s done her hair, her makeup. She’s wearing a thoughtful outfit that’s clean and ironed. There’s probably a lot of behind-the-scenes effort too. Many women have skin care and hair care regimens. They’re expected to shave from the neck down. They pluck their eyebrows. Hair curlers, straighteners, eyeshadow palette, blow dryer. Bronzer, blush, lipstick, highlighter. Nail polish, eyebrow pencil, hair mask, eyeliner. Cleanser, conditioner, body scrub, moisturizer. And yet… when I see the average man, it’s clear that effort isn’t even remotely reciprocated. Perhaps it’s just my area, but when I survey a crowd, I see most women have dolled themselves up, and most men… well…haven’t. In fact, many men I see seem to be wearing ill-fitting or wrinkled or stained clothes. No attempt to groom their hair or beard. When I see a man who has put some effort in, I seriously do a double-take. It’s so rare where I am. There is so many jokes on the internet about men’s only beauty regimen being a bar of soap. And I’ve dated before, so speaking from experience and what I’ve heard- it’s seems like there is quite a bit of truth to those jokes. And I find it quite frustrating. Why is there such a strong societal expectation that women have to put so much effort in to be desired, meanwhile men just get to be loved “as they are”. I’m certain, that many of these men who put no effort in, are lusting after the girls who do put a lot of effort in. And these guys would probably have no interest in a woman who matches their level of effort. It’s just disappointing, because I feel like I’ve been trained from a young age to make myself look attractive. Weight loss ads, shaving commercials, hair-care infomercials, makeup magazines. Radiant, illuminating glow- whatever that means… And yet the average guy I see can’t even brush his hair or iron his shirt. (Obligatory not all men, I’m sure many do put in effort, but personally I have not encountered many. Also I’m not supporting the beauty industry or beauty standards, but it is nice to see when people have tried to make themselves presentable) Edit: Woahhh so I pissed off a lot of people: this post is not meant to shame people who embrace their natural self’s, but it’s about the unfair beauty expectations placed on women. There are so many things women need to do behind the scenes in order to literally not disgust other people, both men and women. Like the removal of body hair. That has become so normalized, most people do not even remember women grow hair anymore. Sure some people don’t care, but most do, and many will actually be disgusted by you if you have visible body hair. Often times you need to wear makeup or you’re bombarded with “you look tired” or “are you sick”. Some women are even told they’re unprofessional for not wearing makeup and dressing up. The Media is constantly telling us we need to lose weight and look a certain way. This post is lamenting these deeply ingrained types of societal standards women deal with, while so many guys literally have to do nothing in terms of appearance and people praise them for it, based on the controversy of this post. Edit 2: I am not trying to shame men for their appearance. I said most of them in my area are wearing an unwashed, wrinkled, ill fitting shirt with unkempt beard and hair. Why is me saying that’s off-putting so evil? Would you bring someone like that over to your parents? Someone who has literal food stains on their shirt? Someone whose hair is a helmet of grease? Would you want to kiss someone whose beard has literal food crumbs in it? Would you be comfortable walking with him into a fancy Italian restaurant where everyone else is dressed appropriately, and he is wearing shorts that are falling down his ass? I do not expect beauty gurus, but I’d like to date someone who maintains hygiene, and will wear something nice on a date. Being clean and combing your hair so it’s not a mess is not beauty standards- that is simply taking care of yourself which is all that I ask. submitted by /u/Level_Issue_5196 to r/TwoXChromosomes [link] [comments]

Basic ass hair tips for those who've never had long hair
basic-ass hair, not basic ass-hair. (EDIT: commenters have pointed out that this mostly applies to straight hair) I've been transitioning for a couple years now, but had hair most of the way down my back for a decade before I even pursued transition. But if you've never had long hair before, here are some basic steps for caring for it. Please note that i'm a white lady, so I can only speak to white lady hair and white lady hair styles. Right now my hair is well below the shoulder blades and my genes gave me extremely thick hair. Stop washing your hair so much This one seems counter intuitive, but you really need to stop using shampoo on your hair everyday. Shampoo is a good thing, once a week-ish or whenever you feel it needs a wash. But hair also needs the natural oils your head produces to stay healthy and it takes time/brushing for those oils to work down from your head to the tip of a long strand of hair. If you shampoo too much you're stripping all those oils constantly and your hair will suffer for it, or you'll need to use more product to replace the oils. Or tangles, knots, and mats will get much worse. Of course too much oil is bad and your head or pillow will start to smell. Just shampoo when you feel the need and/or once a week. Conditioner though So I just told you not to wash your hair. However I do wet my hair and my head in the shower every day and sometimes that's it. But much more frequently than shampoo I will apply just a tiny bit of conditioner. Just the minimal amount to work through your hair. This does help hair health, but i do it largely for tangle prevention. Also if you do the tiny amounts of conditioner every other day method, you don't need to drench you hair in conditioner quite as much after you do shampoo. And don't dismiss leave-in conditioners that you apply after getting out of the shower. Because shampooing and conditioning in one shower session is a massive time commitment and enough work that my arms get sore, consider leave-in conditioners that you apply after the shower when your hair is still somewhat damp but no longer soaked in water. (seriously, if someone with long hair declines because they're "washing their hair" they might not be blowing you off) Rotate shampoo and conditioner brands If I go for a very long time with the same brand of conditioner i'l start to notice it's less effective or even what seems to be buildup. Now it could just be a thing about that brand, but personally I just like to rotate through brands. And I'm not talking fancy shit (well, kinda, relatively speaking). I'll talk more in the Product section Thou shalt comb it every day I almost didn't put this one, but look... I'm a crazy cat lady who lives alone and didn't even really go outside my apartment much before the pandemic. Now I only have a direct interaction with the sun once every two weeks or so. So it sometimes happens that I get extremely depressed or lazy and can't be bothered to do the not-insignificant work of combing out my hair. But skipping a day when combing is a horrible mistake, because the next day is just that much worse. You'll also notice that you leave hairs in the brush every day no matter what you do. This is natural and you're head was already shedding hairs every day when the hair was short. You just notice now because they are so long. Long story short is that individual hairs actually have a lifetime and only last so long. Eventually the individual hair will fall out and the follicle will start a new one. That's just how it works. But when I don't comb for a day, the amount of hair that comes out is way disproportional and i'm likely losing quite a few hairs to the knots and tangles. The hair gods are malicious demons who exploit all weakness, you cannot skip combing out your hair or you will suffer for it. Which brings me to... Combing again, and dealing with tangles You might notice that much of the shampoo and conditioner sections really have to do with preventing tangles. For this I have recently been introduced to a magnificent things called a Wet Brush (that's the brand). It looks like a normal plastic brush but it deals with tangles really well, especially if you brush you hair out in the shower itself while the water is running on it. I keep one in the shower and another outside and if I just do a half-assed job combing it through while in the shower, it's so much easier to comb my hair out later when it's more dried. Speaking of. As for brushes and combs... you need a soft-bristle brush. The wet brush above has extremely soft bristles. Meaning that they just bend out of the way when encountering an obstruction without catching or trying to resist much. It does resist a little, pulling the tangled hairs into a straight line just a little bit. This means that after a few dozen passes it will slowly and gently work out the issue. A hard bristle brush, however will catch and pull when it encounters a tangle. Now you might be tempted to just apply more pressure to break the tangle and work it out, and you'll get it done but you're going to lose hairs that way. And combs are basically right out, unless your hair has already been brushed through and thoroughly conditioned, which is why a stylist can use them. Pay attention to how wet your hair is when you comb it My hair will do radically different things if I comb it out when it's soaking wet, still a bit damp, or bone dry. This is going to be very personal to you and your hair, so you're going to have to experiment. For me, if I comb it out wet, my hair will stay relatively straight and dense during the day, when combed damp it will have a bit more volume and take on a bit more of it's natural curl, and if combed out completely dry it gains insane volume. I never quite reach carrot-top levels but it gets big.How much you've been conditioning recently will also affect these results, and any product or leave in conditioner will tend to smooth is out a bit. Get a shower cap All of this is quite a lot of work, and i'm very lazy. And even through i'm a morning shower-er sometimes I just want to jump in a shower to relax before bed. But it takes a good hour for my hair to air-dry and a wet pillow is hell on earth. The solution is the old lady shower cap. And if you have a lot of hair it might well be hard to tuck it all into a shower cap so don't think they're all the same. You're going to have to find one that works. ~Product~ It's not a bad word. In truth there are only the couple things I'll stand by and i've already talked about them: A basic leave-in conditioner is wonderful. And anti-frizz serums because my hair does that a lot especially when combed dry. The anti-frizz is really just a very very thick oil and it's annoying on my hands, but does it's job well and adds a nice shine to the hair. Mousse's i stay away from with long hair because you need to use so much to get full coverage, and unless you've moussed everything it just looks like you've got a weird patch in your hair where you failed to wash out all the conditioner. For brands: I like Tresemme shampoos and conditioners, Garnier for leave-in conditioner and anti-frizz oils, and rotate in Head and Shoulders because fuck flakes and it works (as a shampoo, not so much with the conditioning). Pantene is OK i guess. None of these are mega fancy, and you're going to develop your own preferences. Getting a trim and growing speed Getting your hair trimmed makes it grow faster... is a fucking lie. Getting your hair trimmed is still very good, and can help keep your hair longer in the long term, but it doesn't change hair growth. What it does is make you hair look better by trimming back split ends. This is where the tip of your hair has begun to fray and split the hair. If you don't get regular trims, that split in the hair will start to travel up the hair shaft until you have long splits. So getting your hair trimmed regularly will keep split ends in check and prevent you from losing even more hair to them when you finally go to a stylist. The result is less trimmed off in the long run and longer hair. Things not covered Blow driers - I don't use them, can't help you. Professional vs box dye - I only do a little dying, little enough that I can get by with box dyes though I do believe that they are worse if you do heavy or a lot of dyeing. And this is all I could think of Holy shit that's a novel EDIT: I should have known hair would be so varied and a bit contentious. TIFU by grooming myself on a flight and shaving my beard only to trigger the crew's anti-terror training and make everyone super paranoid for a short while
This happened while ago while I was traveling to the US on a 9h flight from Europe. Context: I'm Greek / Lebanese and am a rather moderately hairy person, most of it on my face. I had an important meeting to attend in the US that was happening a few hours after I land, so I had to freshen up and prepare while on the plane still. A few hours into the flight, I went to the bathroom to change my clothes, wash my face and freshen up, shave and trim my beard, put on some deodorant etc. Took my backpack with me since I've got everything in there. After spending some 5 minutes in there, struggling to move around the tiny bathroom stalls on planes, someone knocks on the door. I brushed it off with something along the lines of “I’ll be right out”, I thought someone needs to use the bathroom but it was clearly occupied. Another 5 minutes go by and I start hearing chatter outside and could feel some people moving around. I hear a knock again, at this point i had my shirt off and my face was half shaven with mousse all over the other half. I open the door in this questionable state. To my surprise I see 3 flight attendants looking terrified standing around the door... Two women and one man. So I laugh and ask them if there is a rule and a timer for how long you can use the bathroom or what exactly was going on. The man proceeds to tell me some passengers complained because they saw me go in with my backpack, and i stayed in there a while, so they were scared something was going down and reported it to the flight crew. Mind you it wasn’t even at the "questionable" beard or stage or anything... it had grown for some two weeks or more give or take just a week or more of fuzz (edited to say that definitely more than a week’s btw should have been clearer). So I laugh some more and tell him I fully understand, but I had an important meeting upon landing hence freshening up, and that i’ll need a bit longer to just shave fully and finish grooming myself. He then excuses himself and we laugh a bit then he goes away. Shortly after he comes back knocking and I open, this time in a new fresh shirt and fully shaved, and i ask what’s up? He tells me that some passengers are still concerned i’m shaving my beard and thought I was shaving my body too since I opened the door with mousse dripping on my face and without my shirt on. I was very confused and at that stage started to get annoyed, just let me use the damn bathroom in peace there are many others people can use. Turns out that apparently some extremist muslim groups do this before they "get up to no good" (aka sacrifice their life in an act of holy retribution/terror/whatever the fuck you want to call it). Something about going to heaven freshly clean... So at this point i’m laughing too hard but I tell him I fully understand and that this is a good thing they check on such instances. I’d rather be safe than sorry. I then show him my meeting email with the time and date for the sake of their peace of mind. I also mentioned I was Christian born but not religious and that even as a Lebanese dude I had no idea terrorists were shaving before acts of terror, thanks for the information I didn't really need. We then had a chat outside with the rest of the flight crew, laughing and making jokes. I could tell they were still a tiny bit paranoid but 95% apologetic. They didn't check my bag or anything and now that I think about it I should have shown them what was in the bag (snacks, iphone cables, some books, clothes and my toiletry bag). TL;DR - I groomed myself on a flight and the flight crew along with some passengers went full anti terror alert mode while fearing this was something more than just one beardy dude shaving and putting on fresh clothes. Edit: Here's a photo of where my beard was at more or less before I shaved And here's a photo I took after I was done with the whole ordeal (hoodie was swapped before meeting lol) Edit 2: For the many "why would you shave on the plane" queries - it was a special circumstance trip that I booked on a day's notice and my beard grows too fast so shaving before we took off would mean I'd have some annoying stubble when we landed. I wanted to look as fresh as I could for that meeting and I did what I could with the given circumstances. I also groomed myself during a “lights off” time where everyone is asleep. Queues to bathrooms don’t form during that time. Remember, they offer you shaving kits on some business flights so to think anyone shaving on a plane is extreme is funny but understandable if you’re unaware. They have plugs for razors, hair dryers, etc in the plane bathroom stall. I mean they change poopy kids in there so think about that for a second Reddit. Thanks for the feedback r/tifu! Can't believe this blew up. submitted by /u/GallowBoob to r/tifu [link] [comments]
