Why are school uniform and hairstyle ugly only for girls?
Guys while going to office today, I saw a lot of school girls. And it reminded me of my school days. Till 6th or 7th standard uniform was skirt and shirt. But then from next year majority schools adopted salwar suit as uniforms. And let me tell you in my school it was ugly af. It couldn't be worse. There were rules like we have to put oil in our heads and make 2 braids, no makeup of any kind. And were even taunted/scolded as girls if we were seen laughing or just being friends with boys. And it made me think, I get it it's for precaution or whatever. But why are such rules only imposed on girls. Boys were never taunted or shamed for being friends with girls. Nor were they made to change their uniforms "for precaution". I get what was the point of it . But isn't it indirectly justifying that women's clothes are the reason for misconduct/harassment. submitted by /u/Rinuuu to r/TwoXIndia [link] [comments]

My nephew [14/M] asked me [30/F] about his true origins, but his mother made us all swear we would tell her fabricated lies about him
This is a repost sub. I’m not the Original OP (OOP) OOP: u/ShatskyRise Published on: r/relationships Story is: CONCLUDED Story timeline Main Post: October 19, 2015 Update: October 26, 2015 Final Update: October 30, 2015 Main Post October 19, 2015 My nephew [14/M] asked me [30/F] about his true origins, but his mother made us all swear we would tell her fabricated lies about him A quick background explanation : "Jack" is my boyfriend 14 years old nephew. I consider him to be my nephew because I've known him since the day he was born, even thought I am not married to his uncle (very common in my part of the world, so no comments on this please!) His mother was in her mid-thirtiestwenties when she desperately wanted a kid, so she either tricked (or paid, her story is a bit unclear on that part) a coworker of her into fathering a kid. Jack really loves me because I am the "cool aunt" and often confides in me, especially since hitting his teenage years. What we know about Jack's biological father : he used to be a coworker/acquaintance (we're unsure) of my sister-in-law, he's Black, he was married with kids, and he may have been deported back to his home country (or willingly returned there, that part is also unclear). Also, my sister-in-law is adamant he didn't know he fathered her child, and she never told anybody who it was. The fabricated lies about Jack origin : her mother fabricated a whole web of lie about Jack conception, because I guess she's ashamed of how he was conceived (personal interpretation). She asked the few of use who know the real story to propagate those lies, mainly that Jack was conceived during a trip to Italy, with an unknown Italian man she met on the beach and they had a night of unbridled passion...She said that having a fictional Italian father would explain is "curly hair" and dark skin. Never mind that she got pregnant a whole 2 months after her trip to Italy. Also, Jack look, well, Black. He's got very pronounced Black facial features and hair, as well as a very dark skin (his mother is the whitest of white). Despite this, his mother is having him believe he's the product of two Caucasians persons and described him as looking "Mediterranean" Recently, at a family reunion, Jake asked me if he could speak privately about some important matters he was too afraid to ask his mom (or his uncle, because he feared he may tattle to his mother). So under the guise of going for a ice cream run, I took him for a drive. He told me that other kids at his school were calling him a "nigger" (there's not a lot of black people around here, we're in the middle of nowhere in a very rural and white area...) and were laughing at him when he told them he's half-Italian. He said he know he looks like a black person, and he's pretty sure his father was black. He also told me he doesn't mind being half-black, nor does he care about knowing his father. He said he's tired of the uneven buzz cut his mom gave him ever since he was a kid because she was unable to style his hair and would like to experiment with other hairstyles, like those he see on Black people on TV. He also told me he likes Hip-Hop but his mother doesn't want him to listen to it because she doesn't want him to "catch" mannerism associated with rappers. Instead, she has him listening to classic rock and 90's alternative (basically her preferred style of music). He also said they've learned about slavery in school, and he'd like to know more about the history of "his" people. What I've heard when talking with him was a teenage boy who wants to belong somewhere but haven't found that place because he look different. All his life he's been told he's someone he isn't, being made fun of and rejected for pretending to be this person he isn't. He's afraid of looking for the truth since he fears his mother reaction, he fears she might hate him if he say he's black because then he'd be something she tried to avoid all his life. I didn't told him his story, I said that we would try to help him, but didn't make him any promises. I did gave him a memory stick with my favorite hip-hop and reggae album and and huge pair of headphone (which he wears 24/4 now, they are "fashionable"). I talked about what Jake told me with my boyfriend. We both agree his sister is ridiculous, and he had a lengthy conversation about it with her. She flatly told him that Jake is not Black, he's half-Italian, End.Of.Story she doesn't want to hear another peep about it or she'll forbade us from talking with him (I don't care, he's got snapchat, instagram, facebook, twitter and so do I, she's barely able to send an email). The grandparents don't want to get involved, they said they will side with their daughter since she knows what's best for her son. I have talked about the situation with my supervisor at work, we have a nice relationship beyond work, and she's from Africa as well as her husband. She said if I wanted, I could take my nephew with me for a day and meet with her and her husband and their kids. Her husband offered to give him a crash course "black hair for men 101" and talk with him about important "black man things" that my boyfriend might have not know, such as ingrown facial hair .Their twins are the same age as Jake, and like the same things so he could make friends beyond his school. My boyfriend agree it's an excellent idea, but we're reluctant to break his sister clear orders. We feel this could backfire and that Jake himself would be punished for our actions. I feel like I should tell him the truth about his origins, and take on the offer to meet my supervisor family so he could get some positive role model he can relate to. TL;DR : teenage nephew discovered (!) by himself that he's half-black, his mother still saying he's Italian and doesn't want him to experiment with his culture and heritage. Edit : typo in the age my SIL got pregnant. She was in her twenties, not thirties... COMMENTS heretoprocrastinate Yeah I think the kids is only going to figure it out more and more. I really don't have any advice since this is way out of my league. I wish the best for him, and good luck to you guys. OOP Yeah, he told me he was always a bit suspicious of his purportedly "Italian" origin. He said that even thought he's at peace with who he his, he's afraid his mother will never love him for what he's really is. It really broke my hearth hearing that. JancariusSeiryujinn Why did the sister not just say "It was a black guy in Italy?" in the beginning? Like, that would have closed up pretty much all the holes in the story. OOP I think her problem is with the "black" part... Mostly the stereotypes associated with black persons, and (IMHO) most importantly, the stereotype associated with fat white woman and black guys. I strongly believe she doesn't want to be that "fat white woman who got impregnated by a black guy who disappear from his child life"... even though she willingly took the steps to be impregnated by a black guy and willingly do things that would prevent the father to know he fathered a child. She once said, and I quote : "I want a baby without having to endure the jerk needed to make one". She's also a fervent reader of Harlequin type books. I'm pretty sure she constructed a whole romantic story in her head and she's using her kid as a real life prop to indulge in that fantasy. pancake_ice Could you tell him that since no one knows his biological father's family history, he could be black and to embrace that culture if it feels right? OOP I didn't explicitly told him his father was black because the kid is not stupid and know pretty well what he look like. I did however told him that if something look like a duck and quack like a duck and act like a duck, then it's probably a duck winkwink* To a long comment I am not close at all to her. My boyfriend his really close to his sister, but each time he tried to talk to her about it, she either hang up or leave the room. If he push the matter, she gets angry, yells at him then complain to her parents, who in turn call my boyfriend to remind him how bad of a brother he is for tormenting his sister and that as a mother, she's the only one who know what's best for her son. I believe the grandparents are happy to shove their heads in the sand regarding this subject, since it's mean they can continue to tell the "romantic" story of their half-italian grandson instead of the "dirty" story of a mixed-race grandson conceive in deceit or in exchange or money... I think there's a strong racist undertone to the whole story. iggybiggyblack Can you help him meet these black role models without explicitly telling him his story? I think that connection is more valuable than a confirmation of a truth he already knows. OOP I plan on introducing him to my supervisor family. I think I'll tell him his story when he's 18, this way it's gonna be pretty hard for his mother to forbid any contacts with him. I think I'll leave out the part about his mother tricking/paying his bio dad (I'm not even sure myself, and it's not a nice thing to know, especially since he seem to have accepted his bio dad will never be in his life). Update - after a week October 26, 2015 UPDATE : My nephew [14/M] asked me [30/F] about his true origins, but his mother made us all swear we would tell her fabricated lies about him After a discussion with my boyfriend, we agreed to invite his nephew for the weekend, set him straight about his origins and have it meet my supervisor family. Boyfriend called his sister last week, and told her we'd take Jake for a weekend in the city (this happen often so she wasn't suspicious). So last Friday, I pick up Jake from school and we drive back home. We talked about music (he loved what I gave him on the memory card), school, girls, etc. During dinner, my boyfriend told him we had a discussion about what he said to me during the family reunion. He said we had a long thought about it, weighted the pro and the cons, and decided we would tell him the truth about his origin, or at least, what we knew. Basically, we told him that yes, his dad was black so that makes him half-black and no, he wasn't conceived in Italy because her mom got pregnant 2 months after her trip. We said we were telling him despite his mom direct order, because we feel it's not ok to be lied about his origins. I told him about my supervisor's family, and their offer. He said he wanted to meet them, so on Saturday morning we drove to the mall and meet them there. It was an instant hit with the twins, and after a couple hours, they acted like they've been friend forever. We all had lunch together then drove them to the park near my supervisor house. They played soccer all afternoon with the twin's friends and neighbors. Around dinner time, we received a call from Jake asking if it was ok if he stayed for dinner with the twins (with their parents blessing of course) then later he called to see if it was ok for him to spend the night. Then on Sunday morning, they all went to a community brunch. The twins had hockey practice so my supervisor husband, Henry, drove him back to our place. They had a "manly" discussion on their way about personal topics (grooming, not knowing who their father is, what it means to be mixed-race, etc.) We didn't pry about what Henry told him, but Jake told us that Henry told him a lot of things that putted him at ease with himself and that for the first time in his life, he felt like he could simply be himself. My supervisor later called me to tell that Jake is a very polite and well-mannered young man, and he's welcome anytime he wants in their house. Before we drove Jake back home, we told him it was his choice about telling his mom or not. Whatever he did , we would stand behind his choice and are ready to accept the consequence. We said to contact us by any necessary mean if he needs us and we'll be there. He decided to come clean to his mom. He told her we told him the truth about is origins, that he spent the weekend with his new friends. He told her he was tired of being laughed at for pretending to be someone he isn't, and that it's not because he knew he was half-black and likes hip-hop that he would turn into some kind of gangster or whatever she feared. He told her he would start growing his hair because he want's an afro, whether she likes it or not. Obviously, his mom blew a fuse and we received a very angry call from her. She said we were undermining her parental authority, she threatened to cut contact with us, my boyfriend tried to calm her but she then threatened to call the police (!). He got fed up and told her to call back when she was calmer. She did called the police, and kudo to the officer who called us back. He just wanted to confirm that his sister wanted us both arrested and thrown in jail for telling our nephew about his bio dad race, When we confirmed, he said he'd have a talk with her about the purpose of the police force and what making frivolous calls entails. He asked about the well-being of our nephew and told us he's gonna pay them a little visit just to make sure everything's ok with him (he's got a file with CPS from a couple of years ago because we made a complaint about his mom, so I guess they're being extra cautious). We call Jake to keep him up to date. He said his mom got very angry at him, so he ran next door to his grandparents house. He explain the situation to them, and they wanted to talk to my boyfriend about it. They had a quick discussions about it and they both agreed that Jake mother was ridiculous about the whole situation. They've apologized to Jake about lying to him for all those years and that they should have never let his mother do this. They also called their daughter and basically put her in timeout. Jake will spend the week with them so she can think about what she did and the consequence of her actions. They will also talk with the police officer to assure him that Jake is safe at their house and that they are keeping their daughter in check. tl;dr: Told Jake the truth about his origins. Mom blew a fuse. Grandparents agreed we were right and put mom in adult time out. EDIT : I initially forgot to tell, but when I wrote the original post, I was entirely sure that Reddit would tell me to mind my own business. I was very ambivalent about doing nothing or going against his mother direct orders. Then people started commenting on how bad it was for a kid to not know his origin, how bad it was too be lied too and discovering the truth later one. I also received some PM from people telling me their stories as a mixed-race kid. It's only then I realized how important the questions of race and origin are. It's something I couldn't have even imagined with my background (I know both my parents and all of my grandparents, I know stories about my ancestors. I have never doubted from where I came from.) Hearing from people who went through the same things as Jake really helped us make what we believe was the best decision for him. COMMENTS captaincuttlehooroar I feel very badly for your nephew. I wish you guys had spoken to the grandparents ahead of time and tried to get someone in the family to convince your boyfriend's sister to tell the boy the truth before someone else did. I'm not sure if an ultimatum like that would have worked on her, but one of the the worst possible outcomes is someone other than his morther telling him, and then telling him that his mom has not only been lying to him his whole life, but that she is also forcing everyone this young man loves and trusts to lie to him too. I have no sympathy for the boy's mother whatsoever but I can't help feeling there was a more sensitive solution to this than the one you chose. If you exhausted those options and attempted to resolve this another way, then I apologize for being so harsh. OOP We tried talking to the mom to no avail. We tried talking to the grandparents to help them reason their daughter but they said they would stick by their daughter. They only changed their minds when Jake himself told them and explained to them how bad he felt because he knew his mom was lying to him. Jake was absolutely sure of his origins, he just wanted confirmation from someone he trusted. rj20876 I hate to see family overstepping parental authority. My gma does it constantly with my daughters but fuck did it need to happen here. She was being absolutely ridiculous. OOP It's during time like this we regret not pushing forward to get parental authority over Jake when he was still a toddler. The grandparents stepped in to keep an eye on their daughter but we feel it might not have been enough sometime. SoMuchMoreEagle Did she pick him because she figured he wouldn't be a part of her son's life, either because he would go home or because he was black? Or did she get pregnant on accident? Or is she just nuts? OOP She definitely didn't got pregnant on accident. She had two miscarriage before Jake, and from what she told us, it was from the same guy. I think she picked him up because he was willing to have sex with her. I don't think he know he fathered a child with her. SoMuchMoreEagle I'm so glad it worked out. Hopefully his mom will come around. Too bad she couldn't have been the one to tell him, but for some reason, she was living in some kind of blissful denial world and didn't see that her son was being hurt by her lie. Why didn't she just go to a sperm bank? Also, big kudos to your supervisor and her husband. They really stepped up. Being 14 is hard enough when you aren't being called names and have friends who look like you. OOP Artificial insemination cost a fortune. She's unemployed (and according to her previous work records, probably unemployable unless she could be placed in those insertion programs for the mentally challenged). wookiee42 Wait, she's mentally challenged? Or are you just joking around? OOP She was never properly diagnosed, but it's not too far fetch of an assumption to make. She cannot drive. I saw her trying to learn in a empty parking lot and you could just see the task was too complex for her to fully grasp. She tried at least 6 time to get her apprentice permit, but she never passed the theoretical exam. She never got her high school diploma. When she was 18, they sent her to adult school and her assessment test showed that her general knowledge level was around grade 6. Her reading and writing knowledge were lower than that. She struggle with basic additions and subtractions. She was able to get an equivalent diploma after 5 tries, she was nearly 30 at the time. As for work, she never held a job for more than 3 month, and 3 month being an exceptional high. She worked at all the minimum wage place around here. Fast food places, big box stores, house cleaning... she was fired from all her jobs (10+) for gross incompetency. So yeah, I really believe she's somewhat mentally challenged. However, she never had the help she needed because her parents refused to act and enabled her like crazy so she wouldn't feel "different". east_end he's got a file with CPS from a couple of years ago because we made a complaint about his mom What happened here? OOP When Jake was 4, she got fired from another job. She was beyond on rent, utilities have been cut off for at least a month so she was keeping a toddler in an unheated basement appartment late in autumn. She was feeding him exclusivly on junk food and diet soda. She lived in another town and we only found out when her landlord called my boyfriend to tell him he had served her an eviction notice (he was on the lease as an emergency contact). We found out she would often leave him unattended to go shopping or see movies... He was 4yo !!! We called her parents but they didn't believe us. I was 19 at the time. My boyfriend was 20. We didnt know what to do so we called CPS. There was a family meeting with a social worker and it was agreed that she would move near her parents and they would act a legal coguardians (or somerhing like this). CPS made a couple of follow up visits and everything was ok so they "closed" the file. orangekitti Between this and the last post (where they disagreed with telling Jake because "his mother knows best") maybe your boyfriend's parents need to learn which sibling to give the benefit of the doubt to. They need to stop coddling her just because she's a mother and can do no wrong. She clearly has a lot to learn about putting her kid first. OOP There's an 8 years age gap between my boyfriend and his sister. Their parents always considered him the troublemaker because he was an hyperactive child who didn't do well in school. She is the older sister, therefore she's right. MIL continue to believe her daughter can do no wrong, bu FIL got a head on his shoulder more than his wife. Final Update - after 11 days (after 4 from last post) October 30, 2015 [FINAL UPDATE] : UPDATE : My nephew [14/M] asked me [30/F] about his true origins, but his mother made us all swear we would tell her fabricated lies about him Just some quicks update about Jake's situation. I don't think I'll post more after this because IMO the situation is pretty much resolved. About the call his mom made to the police : the police offier who called us payed her a visit. He then called us back to let us know that they obviously won't pursue with her complaint agaist us. Jake called us to ask if he could come again for the weekend. During our discussion, he said his mom talked to him and told him that yes his bio dad was black. He said she had a kind of "are-you-happy-you-ruined-everything-now" kind of attitude about it. She's lifted the ban on hip hop music and black hairstyles, but very seriously told him it's gonna be our fault if he become a gangster... Oh well, I guess we can live with this. On more serious matters, my boyfriend talked with his dad this week. They're gonna have Jake and his mom move in with them. Their house is literally next door, plenty big, and paid for. Plus they'll be able to keep an eye on them. FIl hinted that the move was sparked by the fact that Jake mom was having trouble paying rent and her bills again (and her dubious decision to call the police over such trivial matters). My boyfriend took the opportunity to say that it was maybe time they have a serious family discussion about his sister mental capacities and he expressed his concerns about what will happen when her parents won't be there anymore. FIL is starting to see the light, he said he's gonna take an appointement with an attorney to see what can be done, but he expect MIL to throw a shit storm over it. Finally, the biggest shock would be that we've learned that they are the legal guardians of Jake, ever since we made that call to CPS 10ish years ago. They never bothered telling us this little fact. So Jake lived with his mom but it was his grandparents who had legal authority over him. Again, it show how they tried to "protect" her again and again from the consequence of her own actions. We offered to have Jake over for the weekends and holidays if he wants. They were reluctant a bit, but they agreed on the condition that we have to pick him up on Friday after school and drive him back for Sunday evening. (1h ride each way). Also he's starting high school next year, we're gonna offer his mom and grandparents (and him, obviously) to have him for the whole school year so he could attend high school in the city, near our place. Jake has always showned an interest for learning a trade and this school offer a program where high school students can try different trades and then transfer their credit when they graduate. I'm gonna leave soon to pick him up for another weekend in the city. So thanks everyone for the kind comments and words of encouragement ! TL;DR : Mom comes clean, they gonna move in with grandparents, we have Jake over for the weekends and Holidays and are considering asking them to have him move with us next school year. I'm thinking of divorcing my wife for how she treats our twin daughters.
I just want to rant on an account not associated with my hobbies, sorry. I'm 34m, my wife is 35, my daughters are 9 year old twins. Twins kind of run in my wife's family, even though she herself is not one. From what I know she was very jealous of her cousins that are twins when she was growing up, so she's been very intense about it ever since she got pregnant. When going to her 8 week appointment, she kept talking about how she hoped the baby was two babies. I thought it was funny but not weird. When we found out they indeed were twins, my wife was so happy and so excited, and of course I was happy to be having kids too. The problems started with the baby planning. When decorating the nurseries, she decided that they should instead be in the same room. This makes sense for new-borns, for convenience, but she always said she wanted them to share rooms forever. This seemed very silly to me since we have a 6 bedroom house. She threw us a gender reveal, and got her family to organize us a baby shower. Both parties were themed around the fact that the girls were twins; Gifts were required to be matching, all the games and activities were about things in sets of 2. This is around when my family started thinking she was being weird but I disagreed with them. We had a bit of an argument before the baby shower, because she wanted to give the girls what to me were overly matching names. Her favorites were Eva and Ava. in the end she agreed that having them be only 1 letter off was silly, and we ended up with matching, but not overly obvious names. When my girls were born, my wife would dress them up the same every day no matter what. When one of the girls dirtied her clothes, she'd change them both, even if that meant waking one of them up. She would get mad at me if I dressed them differently. Shed get upset if they did not both want to be fed at the same time. This is when I started noticing how weird she was being about the twin thing. (I'm going to be using those fake names from now on.) When they started going to kinder she bought them all matching coats, new shoes, backpacks and lunch boxes. But she would also get upset if any of them got swapped (she made sure to name-label anything). One time she complained to the teacher about sending "Ana" in "Betty's" coat the previous day. Ana has always been the quieter, more calm one of the two. Now that they are older, she likes to stay home and read. She watches tv with her mom. Betty on the other hand is a lot more energetic. She likes to play outside and build things, she likes to play videogames with me, or go stay with her aunty, my sister, who is a hiker and mountain biker. She loves sports class and tennis, and last year started doing swim too. This is the origin of all our problems. My wife doesnt like that Betty is not as feminine and calm as her and Ana. When Betty started not wanting to get her hair done every morning, they had such a massive fight the house was tense for a week. My wife likes to send the girls to school in the same or matching hair-styles, and would get upset when Betty would return home with her hair in a ponytail or messed up from sports. They go to private school, and Betty recently also asked me if she could start wearing the boy's uniform (pants) instead of the skirt. I said I could buy them for her if that made her more comfortable. When I brought this up to my wife, she got extremely mad, and went to stay with her sister “for a week” even though she returned the next day. She never apologized but took back her threat of getting rid of the pants. I have been very upset since this happened and have been trying to take more time out of my day to talk to Betty and make sure she doesnt feel upset with her mom. Our biggest fight was tonight, and why im sleeping in our guest room. While i was finishing dinner and the girls we setting the table, my wife stood at the door of the kitchen and told us all that Betty would not be allowed to do swim anymore. I got upset because she said this without talking to me first, and Betty was upset because all her friends are in Swim. For context here, you have to know we are from immigrant families, and our home country/elders are, to be completely honest, quite racist and colorist. My wife proceeded to explain to Betty that swim makes her spend too much time outside, that she had gotten too tan, didn't match her sister anymore, and that our family back home would make fun of her about it if we went to visit this summer. I got extremely upset at my wife and told her she cant tell our girls things like that, and that it is extremely hurtful and irresponsible. Ana went and sat at the table and Betty locked herself in the bathroom. The argument kept going, and I brought up how ridiculous she was being about "matching". That its extremely dumb for the girls to still share a bedroom when we have a perfectly usable open one, and that what she said was very obviously racist. She said she wasnt but I decided this was not worth it and went to try comfort Betty. I ended up having a long conversation with both girls where they agreed they wanted separate rooms, and apologized for arguing in front of them. Ana also told me she hates wearing matching hairstyles because their mom is "aggressive" with the brush. I apologized to her too. After cleaning up the kitchen, I realized my wife locked me out of our bedroom, and she won't even acknowledge me when I knock. She also seems to have taken the keys from the utility closet with her, because I cant find them. I'm extremely frustrated. I put the girls to bed and said we'll move some of the furniture tomorrow. I called my sister and we talked but now I'm just more upset. I feel like I failed as a parent. They are 9, I should have noticed sooner. I'm seriously considering divorce. But I'm worried how the girls will get treated if we end up with 50/50 custody. submitted by /u/fun-rey-92 to r/offmychest [link] [comments]

Years ago I (38M) had a one week fling with my gf's (29F) sister (35F) and she doesn't know about it. Will everything blow up if I tell her?
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/ThrowRARoder Originally posted to r/relationship_advice Years ago I (38M) had a one week fling with my gf's (29F) sister (35F) and she doesn't know about it. Will everything blow up if I tell her? ---- Original Post: March 4, 2026 Sorry about mistakes in English in advance guys I've started dating my gf last December and I really like her and I love her. Last weekend I was invited to a barbeque on her parents’ house and met the whole family, and amongst them her sister. When I saw pictures of them both together on Instagram I didn't recognize her because she's changed her hairstyle completely and dresses very differently, but once I met her in person I identified her. In 2012 I won a prize at work consisting in a whole week of vacation in a touristic place and I met her in the hotel and we connected extremely well on a physical and intimate level and had a great vibe the whole week. Basically going to the beach, going out at nights and having sex for six days. We kept contact for a time through Facebook but later on she deleted her profile and we just stopped interacting completely maybe in 2014? or so. When my gf was introducing us I almost froze for a moment, and I could see in her eyes that she also noticed and stuttered a bit but we both acted like we never met before the whole day. I could see her glancing at me at times and I also have absolutely no doubt its her: same name, same voice, same smile, same tattoo. Must I tell my girlfriend about this? I mean, if I was her, I think I would have wanted to know something like this because it's not like a lonely kiss when we were in high school. But I also think it might hurt her to know and it may also hurt her and that's what I fear the most. I've talked to my best friend about it and he says I should never tell her but I should also talk about it to her sister. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: Talk to her, don’t talk to her sister. Chances are the sister already told her. You want to make sure she trusts you if she finds out through her sister and not you, then she’ll have reason to doubt you. Obviously it might cause some insecurities, but it was so long ago, I think if you say it right, do it in the right way it shouldn’t be an issue OOP: I understand. And should I say it in a casual way, like "oh btw the other day I thought your sister was familiar to me and I remembered later on that I met her once in 2012 during a vacation, etc"? Or maybe like "listen, you need to know something that happened" and detailed way? I'm terrible at this Commenter 2: Do not go to her sister. Absolutely not. You tell her directly. Like you said, it was 14 years ago. Open with that. “Hi, we need to talk… blah blah blah ok so I recognized your sister. 14 years ago, we had a bit of a fling. Just for a week. We stayed in contact until 2014 and I haven’t heard or thought of her since until seeing her when I met her family. It was a really long time ago, but I wanted to tell you so as to be honest and not hold something from you” Your friend is an idiot. You have to tell her. Otherwise you are a LIAR. And for all you know, her sister could have already told her and now she’s just waiting for you to do the same. Do NOT under ANY circumstances reach out to her sister. That would be the worst thing you could possibly do. I have three sisters myself and a brother. If I were in her sisters shoes, I would a million percent tell my siblings RIGHT away and if their boyfriend reached out to have a secret convo with me on the topic? Oh my sibling is getting TOLD and I would tell them not to trust this man who tried to work things out behind their back. You and her sister aren’t close friends. You don’t know each other. It would be so weird and inappropriate and gross to reach out to her. Please do not do that. Tell her. Tel her right away unless you want to get dumped or divorced. Because NO HEALTHY AND LONG LASTING relationship is built on lying or withholding information pertaining to sleeping with their sibling lol OOP: Okay I completely understand. Thank you. It's just that it's going to be a difficult conversation to have and I fear it might hurt her, but I guess I have to do it + Well it's decided and I'm gonna tell her today later on when we have lunch together. I'm stupidly nervous like I've done something wrong Commenter 3: No, you didn't do anything wrong, it is just bad luck. Don't go into detail about how many times you did it or how amazing it was. Just give her the facts and tell her you felt she needed to know, since you love her and want to spend the rest of your life with her. It isn't a minor issue, she will feel weird for some time, so just don't invalidate her feelings. OOP: Thank you Yeah, I will try to jus state it and that I want to be honest about it and that I will be there by her side whatever the emotions that come out of this are. I just hope I'm not losing her because of one stupid week 14 years ago. Im already on my way there so wish me luck Update: March 4, 2026 (same day, seven hours later) Years ago I (38M) had a one week fling with my gf's (29F) sister (35F) and she doesn't know about it. Will everything blow up if I tell her? UPDATE Today I had lunch with my girlfriend and gathered the courage to tell her about me and her sister back in the day. I feared that, as some people wisely pointed out, maybe her sister had already told her "Hey, I've met that guy years ago and had something with him, he didn't tell you about it?" but turns out her sister didn't tell her anything. I tried to just state what happened back in 2012 in the most factual and brief way possible, and that even if she has a couple pictures with her sister on Instagram I didn’t recognize her before meeting her in person the other day and she thank God she believed me. But also I could see how it was progressively affecting her and she ended up crying about the fact that it even happened, and it completely broke my heart and made me feel extremely guilty. I know I'm doing the right thing not hiding stuff, of course I understand that, but I'm devastated still over the fact that I'm hurting her so much. Well she was embarrassed to be crying and wanted to leave the place, so I paid, picked up coffee to go and we walked to the harbour and sat there to keep talking in a more solitary place. She started asking a lot of questions about very specific things like how many times, how it was, if I enjoyed it, if I felt something fer her after that week, how many times had we messaged each other, if sex was better with her, and many more things that took me by surprise because I thought that maybe she would want to know the less possible. And I know I did wrong but I lied and told her I don't really remember that much about those days and that a few days don't really mean anything in my life, that I don't feel and never felt anything for her sister (this is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH) and that it was just a vacation thing that lasted for those days, etc. She seemed worried about emotional attachment and I have none, and I'm certain her sister will tell her the same. Idk I felt like a moron and like I hurt her even if unintentionally. Like anything that I could say and do would be a mistake Turns out that, to make things worst, the last two years they aren't having a great relationship since her sister divorced and moved back to their parents house and my gf feels like her sister is manipulating their father against her. So now this kinda hit like a terrible blow and she says her sister possibly expected me to not tell her, so she could keep the info to throw it at her at some point during a fight or anything. I don’t really know her sister, so I don’t know, but sounds like a very resentful and complicated person to deal with at least at the moment. It's just so unfair overall, and again, I don’t want to make this about me, but I feel like a villain. She said she will eventually talk to her sister but not today because she’s too upset, and I think it might be a good decision. As I was typing this at the office I talked to her again on the phone and she is going to stay in my apartment tonight and I'm glad she accepted, so I'm gonna leave the office early and prepare some nice food for her and try to talk a bit more. Any advice is absolutely welcome and thank you sincerely to the people that guided me here Relevant Comments Commenter 1: Continue with your relationship. Make her feel loved. Cook for her. Care more about the present than the past. If she asks too much tell her you told her the truth because you are an honest person but that it is in your past. Talk to her about the future. Make plans. Travel somewhere new for you both. The sister is not a part of your relationship. Good luck. You did the right thing. OOP: Thanks mate, that's exactly the plan and the conclusion I reached while I was at the office earlier. If it turns out that she can deal with it and we can remain together after this, I'm gonna make her happy OOP responds to a thread regarding not answering any more questions that his GF has because he did the responsible thing and should allow to give her time to get over the details he told her OOP: Yeah, I will see how she is feeling tonight and will try to talk about how I feel about our relationship and our possible future, and how happy she has been making me, which will be all true and I hope she sees my honesty and understands our future can be much bigger than something so small and remote. Maybe she can't, of course, I would be so happy if she tries Commenter 2: This is definitely a difficult situation, and might well end your relationship which is only a few months old anyway. But the ending would NOT be because you did anything wrong back then or now. It would be related to the relationship between the sisters. As others say, you definitely need to consider it closed on your end and not go into details - because nothing positive will come out of it. If it is something she can't let go - it WILL end your relationship. OOP: Yes, and it's understandable. I just hope we can manage to surf the wave and leave it behind. OOP responds to a downvoted comment about his GF's questions being strange on what took place years ago OOP: I don't think it's that strange, especially when you just found out. She has insecurities and I have insecurities too, I understand the sudden questions specially when she is just finding out, even if it took me a bit by surprise Is OOP saying that he lied about the sister being better or lied about not remembering the details? And was there great vibes between him and the sister at the time? OOP: I told her I don't remember details and that it's all so in the past for me that it's a foggy memory. But I do remember a lot, so it's a lie. I'm not going to tell her all that even if she breaks up with me over this. And no, her sister isn't better than her in absolutely anything + Yes, back then we had a great physical connection and had a great vibe in terms of partying snd being on a vacation. But that was it. There was not enough common ground to try to start building anything in "real life" that's why it all faded away after that And yes, I was basically a kid back then and I've grown and changed A LOT since then, I promise you Commenter 3: Do they not look alike? It is also her sister's fault not telling her once she saw u? OOP: They don't really look that much alike, no. And also, now her sister has a completely different hairstyle compared to what she looked like back then and dresses very differently so no, I didn't recognize her in pictures Does OOP still have any interest in the sister? What about her interest for him? OOP: I have absolutely no interest in her sister at all, and I believe it's the same for her DO NOT COMMENT IN LINKED POSTS OR MESSAGE OOPs – BoRU Rule #7 THIS IS A REPOST SUB - I AM NOT OOP submitted by /u/Choice_Evidence1983 to r/BestofRedditorUpdates [link] [comments]

AITA for being mad at my husband after he let our daughter shave her head?
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/Enough_Worry6831, account now deleted Originally posted to r/AITA_WIBTA_PUBLIC AITA for being mad at my husband after he let our daughter shave her head? Thanks to u/soayherder for suggesting this BoRU Trigger Warnings: borderline child abuse, emotional abuse and manipulation, verbal abuse, child trauma Mood Spoilers: sad and frustrating Original Post: July 17, 2025 We have a certain tradition in my family. During the summer, all children in age 10 have their hair dyed (currently with a special dye that wears off after a few days), we dress in colorful clothes, decorate my grandparents' house, and celebrate for three days and three nights. There's cake, presents, various contests, and so on. It is a family tradition, not a matter of culture or country and it comes from the time when one of my great-great grandmother lost many children before they turned 10. Well, my daughter turns 10 this year, she is one of 3 children in this age. The celebration was scheduled for August 1. Everything was going well, she was very happy. And then I went on a business trip. When I came back, my daughter had a shaved head. Honestly, I was shocked because during this time I did not receive any information or even a photo. I asked my husband what happened. He said that he and our daughter were watching some cartoon together and one of the characters had shaved her hair, so our daughter decided she wanted to shave hers too. And he agreed. That... caused a lot of drama. We had a bit of an argument, and honestly, at the time, I was more concerned that he'd allowed her shave her head on such a small impulse. But the next day, my mother came in and a conversation about tradition began. You know, how to dye hair that doesn't exist. My mother suggested a wig or just painting my daughter's head, but... my daughter burst into tears because she realized she would be the only one 10 year old whose hair wouldn't be dyed. She also refuses to go to the celebration now because "it won't be the same." And now she's mad and my husband is furious with me, thinking the whole tradition is stupid and that it's the tradition's fault that our daughter is upset. I, on the other hand, think he was irresponsible and he should have thought about what he was doing before he started shaving her head. Yes, my husband knows about the tradition. He's been there twice. edit: yes, my daughter is completely bald now. As for "what if one of the kids doesn't want to dye their hair?" the answer is that my brother was that kid. So on the day of the celebration, he wore a rainbow wig, and no one had a problem with it. The thing is, as I've already pointed out: my daughter doesn't want wigs or head paint, she wants dyed hair. edit 2: I've noticed that many people in the comments have a strange view of this tradition, so I want to clarify something. No, we're not talking about dead children, nor is there a "cemetery like atmosphere.". Although it began with many deaths, it is a celebration of life and joy. Something like a huge birthday. That's why everyone dresses colorfully, that's why we paint ourselves and decorate our houses, and that's why children get presents. Relevant Comments Commenter 1: was daughter excited to show you her bald head when she got home? It could be she wanted to or it could be dad pressured her or that something happened to the hair like gum candy caught on fire while you were gone and your husband is covering up. Mabye talk to the salon that cut it? How your daughter acted initially is super important out side of the tradition. for the tradition use face paint and get your daughter excited about what design will go on her head. OOP: My husband shaved her hair at home. When I got home, it was early morning, and my daughter had just woken up. I remember her coming to me, hugging me, and saying, "Hi, Mom.". It took me a moment to process what had happened. She didn't try to hide it, but there was no "Mom, Mom, look what happened!" Then she went to the bathroom, and I started talking to my husband, as I wrote in the post. OOP on her fight with her husband about their daughter's hair OOP: I fought with my husband because he didn't even tell me about it. No, it's not fun or cool when you come home after a week and hear "oh yeah, our 10 year old daughter watched a cartoon and decided she didn't want to have hair, so we got rid of it at home." My mother and I were discussing ways my daughter could participate in the tradition. I don't know, maybe you missed it, but literally one example was head painting. A colorful wig was the other. Plus, it's funny to make it "girls can't have autonomy" when ALL 10-year-olds participate in the tradition. This year there will be one boy, last time there were only boys. Commenter 2: Info: did your husband realize it was her year for the dyed hair or did he forget? OOP: Yes, he knew. Before my trip, we were literally shopping for outfits for the occasion. Update: July 18, 2025 (next day) So, a few things have happened since yesterday, and taking advantage of the fact that it's currently 11 a.m. in my country and I'm home alone, I'd like to share this with you. I guess I'll start by saying that many of you were right, even if you were wrong about the reasons. So 3 hours after I published my first post, my husband's sister came over to pick up my daughter. I decided to take the opportunity and ask her for help, figuring she was the perfect "neutral person." My husband wasn't happy and strongly opposed it, thinking it was unnecessary to still drag this out, but I asked his sister to talk to my daughter about what had happened anyway. She (my husband's sister) currently has a Mohawk, so I asked her to simply start with the hairstyles and then get to how it all started. She agreed. They returned around 11pm. We waited until our daughter gone to bed, then we sat down in the kitchen and started talking. Well... My husband tried to end this conversation many times, but I finally learned this: the fact is that he and our daughter watched a cartoon where a character shaves her hair. The fact is that my daughter found it interesting. But that's where the "Daddy started encouraging us to do it and saying it would be great" part comes in. My daughter told his sister how he convinced her that "it would be more fun this way" and that "this way she would be able to better play the character in their game." When my husband's sister left, we started arguing. I don't know if it's still obvious, but even as I write this, I'm still pissed. At first, my husband defended himself, trying to say that his sister was biased and that it was all lies, and that the idea was 100% our daughter's. But in the end, he told the truth. Yes, he convinced her to cut her hair. No, it wasn't just about "stupid tradition." It's worse. You see, before the date of the celebration was set this year (August 1), my husband wanted to go on a week-long vacation to Greece. They were supposed to start... August 1st. So yes, my brilliant husband shaved our daughter's head to "get back at me for taking away his vacation." . He thought that this way we would avoid reuniting with my family or at least "I would feel what he felt." Yes, I too don't know whether to laugh or cry. It ended with me sleeping on the couch, him taking the bedroom, and going to work in the morning. Now our daughter is currently with my parents while I consider my next move. I don't want arguing again, but I'm certainly not going to leave it like that. edit: okay, I appreciate all the comments, and as I wrote, our daughter is currently staying with my parents. That said, when I took her to them we talked. The good news is that we joked a bit about the fact that at least now we don't have to comb her hair. The atmosphere was better than in recent days, together we found some positives in this whole situation, and using your advice, I also decided to assure her that she still looks wonderful and that nothing that happened was her fault or I'm not mad at her. Unfortunately, the bad news is that she is still sad. She said she still wanted to have her hair dyed and that she's already starting to miss plait Relevant Comments Commenter 1: Can you ever trust your husband alone with your daughter again? He used her to punish you. Think about that. Now she's upset because she was too young to understand the results of shaving her head. Your husband is disgusting. OOP: Oh, I'm definitely thinking about it. I'm going to pack up some of our daughter's things and take them to my parents' house. I won't let her be around him until this whole thing calms down. Commenter 2: What on earth. He was getting back at you? Has he behaved this way before? Will he do it again in my worry? How far would he go? I'm not sure what you can do about your daughters hair. Is their a singer or actress she likes that wears wigs to change her hair? If so, maybe show her to encourage her to try. OOP: You see, the strangest thing is that I can't recall a single situation where he was this extreme. Did we ever argue or disagree on something? Sure. But he never used our daughter against me or became... like that. It usually went "normal": a small argument, followed by an apology and a normal conversation. Literally, just a few days ago, I would have called him a good father and husband. Commenter 3: I’m still concerned about your 10-year-old, especially in a couple of months when she goes back to school. It’s one thing to give a boy a buzz cut in the summer, but there aren’t too many girls who have completely shaved heads, and I’m worried about what she might go through with her classmates, or even other adults who might treat her differently thinking she might be recovering from cancer or a surgery. This is not just about doing something to upset you, and ruin your vacation. This is something that your daughter has to live with until it grows out, which could be a year before it looks normal. OOP: For now, I'm hoping the hair will grown enough before she come back to school . If not I'll try to approach this as if nothing's happening and observe it and react accordingly. Commenter 4: Well your next move is hiring a divorce lawyer, right ? OOP: Honestly? I have no idea. I know Reddit likes to talk about divorce, but I've been with this man for over 10 years, and this is the first time I've ever been in a situation like this. I literally can't remember anything as awful as this. Of course, our daughter will stay with my parents for now, but I plan to have a long talk with him. We might need to go to couples therapy. Maybe he'll learn from this on his own. And maybe this incident will actually lead to our divorce. AITAH for refusing to get rid of my braids because of a stupid dress code.
Recently my school has added a stupid dress code that bans braids, saying they’re distracting and will suspend me until they’re “neater.” I 17F have worn braids my whole life, and they’re a big part of my culture. When I spoke to the principal and explained this, they told me I’d either need to change my hairstyle or face consequences. I refused to get rid of my braids, and now they’re threatening suspension. This feels more than just about hair and I feel like this is a matter of respect. Am I wrong for standing my ground on this. UPDATE: The dress code was removed due to the amount of complaints. Parents and teachers joined in too. We’re reporting this to the ACLU and receive a proper apology. submitted by /u/fl3shd0ll to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

My girlfriend just left me.
My girlfriend just left me for another guy and just said it out right as she liked the other guy. I just don’t know how to feel. I treated her with respect, kindness, compassion I gave her things like flowers her favorite color or hand written notes. I feel like shit. I feel like she broke up with me because I couldn’t give her time sometimes because I go to school then work then if I can sleep. I don’t know what to do I need some advice on how to feel better. I just can’t right now. I don’t even know how I’m going to work through this. Edit she’s trying to play matchmaker for me and have me date her friend it’s so weird. Holy cow you all I appreciate the support didn’t expect this to get so big. I’ll try to reply to everyone but if I can’t thank you for all the support. Update: I’ve started to hit the gym and change my hairstyle. She’s also been saying to people “I’ve lost interest, I never liked her, I ignored her” I told her multiple times why. I have a job and have no time. I should get my car working by Saturday will be going to a road trip in a few weeks after. I’m doing a little better by keeping my mind off it all. I appreciate the support from everyone will keep updating. Thank you all a lot! Sorry I couldn’t respond to everyone. I did not expect it to blow up like this. submitted by /u/Kinchi_man to r/Advice [link] [comments]

AITAH for "glowing up" after my divorce and not before?
I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/ThatPeach7311 Originally posted to r/AITAH AITAH for "glowing up" after my divorce and not before? Thanks to u/soayherder + u/Direct-Caterpillar77 for suggesting this BoRU Editor’s Note: added paragraph breaks for readability Trigger Warnings: emotional abuse and manipulation, infidelity, body shaming Original Post: September 1, 2024 I (53F) have been divorced from my ex-husband "Larry" (54M) for 6 years. Larry and I have two adult children, "Steve" (27M) and "Carla" (25F). Larry and I met in college when we were both electrical engineering students. We were both very much on the nerdy side and looked the part, but were very attracted to each other (so I thought anyway). We got married soon after we graduated and both worked as engineers, but after a few years Larry decided he wanted to go to law school (to become a patent lawyer). In order to look the lawyer part, Larry underwent a major glow-up during this time on pretty much all levels (tailored clothes, fancy haircuts, designer accessories like watches, etc., along with working out to trade his "dad bod" for a lean gym bod). During this time, I was having/raising our small children, while taking care of about 95% of household matters because of his long working hours, all while working full time. I admit I did not "glow up" along with Larry. My own appearance has always been on the plainer side - I'm not overweight but a bit stocky (5'5"/140 lbs), simply cut hair, glasses, practical clothes, not much makeup. Larry loved me as-is for about the first decade of our relationship, but after he started working as a lawyer, he started to become drawn to more conventionally attractive women and had several affairs. When I pressed for counseling, he said that the issues were things like my big nose and post-baby tummy pooch (not things I could fix with a simple makeover). I was getting organized to ask for a divorce when Carla was hit by a car while riding her bike. She survived and is fine now, but needed several years of intensive surgeries and rehab. In order to provide a unified front for Carla (and Steve), Larry and I agreed to stay married and be as cordial as possible (he continued to see other women during this time, but by this time I was past trying to get him to be faithful). We did separate (and divorce) after Carla went off to college. Larry is remarried now to a much younger woman (33F). In the past couple years, I have actually decided to focus more on myself - including my appearance. Now that my children are grown and out of the house, and I don't have to worry about tiptoeing around a difficult husband, I finally have time and resources to do so. I didn't get a nose job or other plastic surgery like Larry had wanted, but I did update and color my hair, started working out more (lost about 15 pounds), got a new wardrobe, and actually started dating (I don't have a steady partner yet, but regularly go to age-appropriate singles events and go on dates). Unfortunately, my children detest the "new me." In particular, they blame me for the divorce and are angry that I didn't "glow up" to accommodate Larry, saying I was too selfish and lazy to do so "when it mattered." My son Steve is getting married soon, and says he is too angry to invite me to the wedding. Carla has gone low-contact with me. I had great relationships with both of them until I started my own glow-up process a couple years ago, which was a few years after Larry and I finalized our divorce. Steve and Carla have told me that the only way to fix this - the only thing that would be fair - is to go back to the way I was before - meaning stop coloring my hair, dress in my former plain/frumpy way, and stop dating. They say they are most upset about the dating and that it's not fair for me to be looking for a new partner. So, AITAH for everything I have done here - for not improving my appearance until after I got divorced? I really don't think Larry would have been faithful to me no matter how much I twisted myself in knots. I felt I did the best I could given the energy and resources I had, and, while it may seem selfish, I do believe I deserve to have my own life now? But I am open to other opinions if I have done something wrong here. Additional Information from OOP to clarify some things OOP: I appreciate your perspective, but I think there may be some unfair conclusions here. First, where did I ever say I had no sex drive? Our sex life was fantastic for the first decade of our relationship (including after having two kids). It only diminished after he decided he had other attraction preferences as he started to rise in the lawyer ranks at his firm. Next, where did I ever say I didn't maintain my appearance? I did, in fact, maintain the appearance I'd had since college. I said we were both on the nerdy side. I maintained a healthy weight (even after kids) and always looked tidy and appropriate for the occasion (in my case, the occasion just happened to be my engineering job and my family/household responsibilities). I just didn't have high-end haircuts and designer clothes, etc. Was I a bit "frumpy"? Probably, as compared to a big-firm lawyer with a $500 haircut and regular spa treatments. But I didn't "let myself go" by changing my appearance for the worse after marriage. Also, I don't think it's fair to say that I didn't "improve myself" in any capacity during our marriage. I advanced significantly in my career while keeping a warm and loving home, cooking healthy meals, and otherwise raising our kids. Those were my priorities, especially after Carla's accident. I don't think I "got what I had coming" just for not wanting painful and time-consuming plastic surgery. Especially as one of the big things he wanted me to do was get a nose job when I was already perfectly happy with my nose. If he'd suggested some smaller changes - like updating my hairstyle and wardrobe or even a gym membership - and had broached the idea kindly and had given me time to do these things - I likely would have been more amenable. But as it was he set the bar so high (surgery) that it didn't seem like I could reasonably make him happy. AITAH has no consensus bot, OOP was NTA Relevant Comments OOP on prioritizing herself and her health in order to be there for her marriage and family OOP: Thanks for this. I do want to say that it's not like I didn't take care of myself at all - I maintained a healthy weight, wore clean and tidy clothes, etc. I just wasn't extremely polished like the high-powered lawyers who were Larry's new colleagues because there wasn't time to prioritize that. I didn't let myself go by any means, I just stayed the same person that Larry married while he changed. The kids have said that I didn't put in the work to make Larry happy (something he has complained loudly about to them) so I don't deserve to have a relationship now. I'm trying to understand their position but it seems very judgmental. OOP responds to comments on if her children knew their father cheated on her OOP: Yes, they know he cheated. He regularly paraded the other women in front of them "as Daddy's friends" and openly left me for the young woman he subsequently married. But he convinced them that he had "no choice" because I was a slob (I disagree with this assessment, I just had a plain and simple appearance) and he became out of my league in terms of looks and professional standing. + Yes, they know he was repeatedly unfaithful and that he ultimately left me for someone else (he did not try to hide this), but he has convinced them that I drove him away after he begged me to pay more attention to my appearance and I refused. I mean, no, I wasn't going to go get painful and time-consuming plastic surgeries while I was working full-time, doing nearly all the childcare and household tasks, and then coordinating my daughter's medical care and rehab after her accident, especially as it's not like he offered to help and do more so that I'd have time to do more appearance-related stuff. I do appreciate you saying that I deserve to be happy and healthy now. + Yes, they know about the cheating and still blame me. They say (as he does) that he wouldn't have cheated if I'd paid more attention to my appearance. OOP on why her children have a say in what she wears OOP: They think that I'm basically rubbing it in my ex's face (and theirs) that I never cared about him because I couldn't be bothered to fix myself up until after we were divorced. I've explained that it just had to do with time and bandwidth that I have now that I'm single and the kids are grown but they aren't buying it. And no, of course the ex doesn't go back. The kids just think I deserve to be alone and frumpy, I guess, because I wasn't a perfect wife in my marriage. OOP on if her ex did anything for her during their marriage together OOP: Heh, he really didn't do anything. I mean, he made good money so we had a nice house, but honestly it was a pretty cold and lonely place. I would have been much happier if he'd stayed an engineer working normal hours and we could have equally shared childcare/household responsibilities and had quality time together. Small Update and Additional Info: September 5, 2024 First, thanks so much for everyone who responded to my initial post. I started out trying to acknowledge everyone's responses but as they grew to the thousands I wasn't able to keep up - I'm so sorry. I did read everything and appreciate your time and thoughts, both for those who offered support and those who had more critical feedback. As a small update, while I do agree that the behavior of my adult children Steve (27M) and Carla (25F) has been extremely judgmental and unkind, to say the least, I am not ready to write them off. I realized that since they started in with their criticisms a couple years ago when I started changing my appearance, I have been very defensive and dismissive. Perhaps that is justified, but as I do want to make every effort to maintain a good relationship with my children, I decided that it would be best to listen with an open mind. (This doesn't mean I'm going to go back to my old frumpy appearance to accommodate them, of course not, but just that I am open to hearing what is really bothering them so we can hopefully talk it out.) When I contacted them both to request this, they agreed to have brunch with me this coming weekend, which is a good start. Perhaps the conversation won't change anything, but I'd always regret it if I didn't try, and listening is free. Many of the commenters felt that some info must have been missing from my initial post. I thought I hit all the main points, but can fill in a bit more detail here. For about the first decade of my relationship with my ex-husband Larry, things were really wonderful - or at least I thought so. As I mentioned, we met in college as electrical engineering students who both had fairly plain and unfashionable appearances by conventional. Honestly, as a nerdy woman I have always been much, much more attracted to nerdy-looking men than super-polished ones, just a better match for me I guess. Larry seemed crazy about me from the get go and I was equally crazy about him. We graduated, both got good engineering jobs, bought a house, and started our family. We had a very warm and loving home, lots of quality intimacy, and frequently hosted our equally nerdy friends for D&D and anime nights. Then Larry decided he wanted to go to law school; nothing really changed for the first couple years, but the law school career counselors advised him to spruce up his appearance when it was time to start applying for attorney jobs. Hence his own glow-up began. Even after that, for his first couple years as a law firm associate, he jokingly referred to his new look as his "silly lawyer costume" and looked forward to coming him to change into his anime T-shirts. I didn't try to match his new appearance because (a) he never asked me to; and (b) initially it seemed like it was just some sort of uniform for him that he was somewhat uncomfortable with. However, this all changed abruptly one night when I was supposed to accompany him to an awards dinner for his firm. Knowing that it was a fancy thing, and that I wasn't the best with fashion, etc., I actually went and got my hair and makeup professionally done and worked with a personal shopper to select what I thought was a flattering dress and shoes appropriate for the occasion. However, when Larry saw me in this getup he suddenly got angry, made "lipstick on a pig" type comments, and threw out the insults about my nose and post-baby tummy pooch. I learned shortly afterwards that he'd started an affair with a colleague (who happened to have a small, pert nose and flat stomach). Even after he was so mean, I was still hopeful that we could get counseling and work through this, but he didn't want to. I will admit I was paralyzed for a while and also didn't want to make any rash moves due to the impact on the kids, and perhaps I could have made better decisions there. But by the time I was actually ready, emotionally and logistically, to proceed with a divorce, Carla had her accident and I had to shift gears to prioritizing her recovery. On another note - contrary to what some commenters assumed, my post-divorce glow-up had nothing to do with wanting to meet new men. Initially, it was precipitated by having a work-related opportunity to do more high-profile client-facing activities, and I received some gentle guidance from my supervisor that it would be a great time to update my appearance - hence the new hairstyle, wardrobe, makeup, manicures, etc. In addition, once I hit 50 my A1C started creeping a bit higher - as diabetes runs in my family, although at 5'5" and 140 lbs I wasn't medically overweight, my doctor advised that losing just a few pounds, coupled with some dietary tweaks and changing up my exercise routine, would be a good idea. So I added yoga, pilates and strength training to the hiking and cycling I already did, and ended up losing about 15 pounds over the course of a year. I'd always been physically active (despite some commenters accusing me of being lazy), I just wasn't focused on scuplting my body to look a certain way as opposed to general fitness. Once I slimmed down and updated my look, I did find myself getting a lot more attention from men, so I figured since I'd been single for a few years I might as well lean into it and start dating - but again that wasn't the initial reason. Some commenters asked if I'd spent "family money" on my makeover and if that might be what was making my children upset. The answer to that is no - Larry and I divided our assets in the divorce, he got the big house we had lived in and paid me for my share which allowed me to buy a much smaller house and have plenty left. Although, as a law firm partner, he makes about 10x what I do, I did not request any alimony beyond my 50% of our assets, which had all been accumulated during the marriage. Anyway, if folks are interested I can post an additional update next week once I can talk to my children and find out more about what their issue is. Relevant Comments What was OOP’s ex’s reactions to her glow up OOP: Larry and I have been divorced for 6 years and he's been remarried for 5 years now. He hasn't said anything to me about it directly either way! As the children are adults we aren't in contact much and only occasionally see each other at group family events. + I've seen him a few times in passing. He is now married to an extremely conventionally attractive woman in her early 30s (over 20 years younger than we are). He told me, when we were married, that he was no longer attracted to me because my nose is too big and because I had a post-baby tummy pooch and that, basically, he was going to keep seeing other women unless I had plastic surgery. And no, my makeover did not include any plastic surgery so it's not like I eventually did the things he demanded. I do think I look great for my age (53) but I'm certainly not going to compete in the looks department with a woman 20 years younger. OOP on her children’s thoughts about her OOP: I'm pretty perplexed as well. They are adults with their own lives (they are both employed and have their own residences) and they both have significant others, so it's not like what I look like or whether or not I date affects their day to day lives. But it's possible I may be missing something. + I will ask them when I see them this weekend, at least if there is an opening to do so. He doesn't have kids with the new wife - I don't know what their plans are there, but they have been married for 5 years and haven't had kids yet. + I'm still planning to keep up my new appearance (which I need to do anyway for job and health reasons as stated in my post) regardless of what they say. But I do really want to know why they are so upset about me improving myself. I updated my look because my job required it - much like Larry had to update his own look for professional reasons all those years ago. I lost weight recently because my doctor suggested it to stave off diabetes - before, there wasn't a health-related reason to lose weight because I wasn't medically overweight and didn't have any health issues. + They likely don't know the full extent of the verbal abuse. Frankly, I didn't want to air dirty laundry and come between my children and their father (per the advice of any mental health expert advising people going through a divorce). But perhaps I can share a bit more now that they appear to be judging me without having all the info. AITAH for calling the police on my neighbours and calling her and her husband pedos at their "Hallovenn" (yes, it is spelled correctly) party .
I am NOT OP. Original post by u/Frosty-Connection344 AITAH for calling the police on my neighbours and calling her and her husband pedos at their "Hallovenn" (yes, it is spelled correctly) party . Originally posted to r/AITAH TRIGGER WARNING: Stalking, kidnapping, abuse of power by authority figures MOOD SPOILER: A fucking David Fincher movie Original Post. - Nov 1, 2023 Throwaway. My husband (39m) and I (35f) moved to this country when we first got married due to his work. We had our first child (f6) here. He was then moved to Germany where our other two (4m,3f) were born. His company decided to move him here again, but to the opposite side of the country to where we lived the last time after we had our fourth (f 5 months). So needless to say we know the culture despite not being native. Our daughter started school this August for the first time, and a lot of her classmates live in the same area we do. One of the boys in her class lives at the end of the road behind us. When we first moved into the neighbourhood back in May we were welcomed by a few of our close neigbours and this boy's mother (let's call her Astrid). She took a shine to my baby, but most people fuss over babies so I didn't think much of it. That same day she told me of how she had lost two baby girls and how lucky I was to have so many girls, and she only had three boys. The day after she came with her husband (let's call him Morton) and he too wanted to pick up the baby and paid her a lot of compliments. Until he met our oldest daughter and made a remark which I didn't think much of at the time. He said my daughter and his son could easily pass for twins as they are in the same class, and they look alike. They don't. My daughter is super blonde with grey eyes and their sun has dark blondish hair with hazel eyes. So, I corrected him. He feigned offense and said what he meant was that she could pass for his daughter, the baby too. Again I corrected them that with his light brown hair and hazel eyes neither of my girls could. He once again insisted and said, I mean our features not the colouring. Then he laughed it off and said he was just joking. They then invited us to go out for drinks, but we declined as neither one of us drinks and we don't like to be too friendly with neighours. During the summer when we bumped into them at the local store a few times Morton and Astrid would call her "julestjerne" and sing a song from a famous movie here. After a few times I told them to knock it off as it was no longer funny. Since May and up until a week ago they have tried to invite us to many get togethers which I found strange as they hardly ever invite the neighbours that they have known for longer than us. Morton and Astrid would quite often talk to my daughter on her way back to school (as she passes their house on the way home), and she said that it bothers her as they have both tried to pick her up and Astrid has treid a few times to touch her hair. When my husband confronted them about it they said it's just the culture here. It's not. The picking up and touching her hair stopped after that. At the beginning of October they wanted us to help them host a "Halloween party" at the end of October, and wanted us to meet them at their house so we could coordinate the childrens costumes, especially the "twins". We declined again as we don't celebrate Halloween. They tried to convince us otherwise and were very pushy. Even had their son knock on our door a few times to play with "his twin" after school. Knocking on doors to play with other children is normal and most children roam out and about as it's a safe neighbourhood and country so that part was never suspicious to me. However after the umpteenth time of calling my daughter one of his twins I put my foot down and said he needed to stop "joking" about it as it's not funny anymore. My husband goes offshore at times due to his work and it's has been me and the children since mid October. My daughter's teacher also lives in the neighbourhood and she is a childhood friend of Astrid. She was present in the park by our house when Astrid came up to me and handed me three costumes. One for each of my girls. She said as we don't celebrate Halloween her and her husband had decided to host a "Hallovenn" party instead and wanted my girls to wear these. I was schocked but told her no. It would not happen. The teacher tried to convince me that this would be a nice way of meeting others families and it would be fun for our children. Astrid said she had spent a lot of money on adjusting the costumes and had found the right hairstyle for my daughter to go as Gretel to her son's Hans. I told her no one made her spend the money as I had made it very clear that none of my children would be going. Right in front of me she took the hairband off my daughter's hair and tried to put one on that she had bought for the costume. I told her to stop and started walking of. She tried to apologise and said relax. We are neighbours and friends. Her teacher followed me and said not to be uptight and that Astrid meant no harm. She just likes girls. On Monday my daughter came home with a different hairstyle and accessories to what I had sent her off with. I asked her how she got them and she said her teacher had done her hair during lunch. I asked her if she had played rough so her hair needed to be fixed she said no. Yesterday morning I spoke to her teacher and she confirmed that it was indeed her who had fixed her hair and that it was Astrid who bought the stuff. I asked her why she would go against my wishes to which she said it was only hair stuff and Astrid didn't want to throw it away as she had spent money on it. She thought with three daugthers I would appreciate help with some free accessories. She also said that I had not made it explicitly clear not to fix y daughters hair. I left after telling her to never do it again and returned the stuff. In the evening the neighbourhood children went trick or treating (those participating were informed it would last from (six to eight) I let my daughter go off and play with one of the other girls who wasn't trick or treating. At about seven I couldn't hear them. So, I went outside to check and they were not there. I asked one of the other children if they had seen her and they said Morton and Astrid had collected her in their car, and her friend had gone home. I asked next door to watch my other two while I ran with the baby to their place. When I arrived there they were having a party in the garden and my daughter was there. She had her hair done and she had a candy bag. She was also wearing the costume. So, in my anger I called the police before speaking to anyone and once I got off the call I called both of them pedos and everything under the sun in multiple languages. When the police arrived and I spoke to them we left. Today at school her teacher was very short with me and said there was no need for that as Morton volunteers for the children's football club. Having a police report filed on him was not the wisest of choices. She explained that if I wasn't happy I should have asked for a mediation appointment at the school instead of embarassing Astrid and Morton in front of everyone. She also mentioned that it was her who helped my daughter change into the costume and it's not unusual for teachers to help their students change here (that part is partially true for this country). She said Astrid has been grieving and her behaviour is normal for someone who lost so many children one after the other, and not to make it harder on her as people have gossiped quite a bit about it. She said they didn't know they had crossed a line and it wouldn't happen again, so just drop the complaint at the police. On Friday I have to make a full statement at the police station. She wants me to cancel it as Astrid and Morton are not bad people and she thinks I should be glad someone else thinks this highly of my daughter. She wasn't harmed and she sees no reason for me being angry as the children all play in each others garden anyway. She said not to blow things out of proportion as at no point was my daughter alone with Morton. AITAH for calling the police instead of mediation at the school as the first step because it was from a place of love and greif that they did this? Relevant comments sheneedsnoone: Are you currently in Northern Norway? I can see the behaviour being more normalised in certain areas, but normalised isn't the same as cultural. Norway is a very "raising children takes a village" country, but that's family, close friends etc stepping in as and when needed. But there's definitely some areas where this kind of behaviour would be excused, and predatory behaviour in general would be excused by people that grew up with them, however I will also say as Norway is a low crime country compared to a lot of countries, you will get a lot of naive people there, even in the police. I would see what they say once your daughter has completed her interview, however once that has been done make a complaint to the commissioner in your police district, making sure to include that you fear for your child(ren)'s safety and the local police are not taking it seriously, despite these people taking your child to a different location, without even informing you, never mind with your permission. You can then complain nationally if the local commissioner doesn't do anything. I have my fingers crossed for you that they listen, but to be honest, I would not hold out much hope unfortunately. Edit to add:the people who are telling you that you are the problem, are part of the problem, and would most likely excuse/enable certain people in their own areas. I'm sorry you're having to deal with that. OP: I am in the Southern part. I already mentioned what they have done and how scared I was. I also provided the text they sent me after I collected my daughter. It's strange because it's a safe country with no child abductions and murder yet this type of behaviour is excused. I learned that while my daughter was being changed Morton was present and although he didn't help with the clothes changing he did with her hair and pickd her up to take he downstairs to their garden. They changed her not in one of the bedrooms of the chidlren or the bathroom, but in their own room. The female police officer said nudity is not seen as bad here. It's normalised, but since when is it ok to undress someone elses child especially three adults are present while it's happening. It's almost like the female police officer was saying it's no big deal. AITAH for calling my neighbour pedos at the Hallovenn party UPDATE - Nov 23, 2023 Thank you for all the reassurances. It was helpful. A lot of people asked about an update and many DM'ed to see how it was going. We filed a report at the police station and basically we were dismissed. We had two female officers on the first day, but a male police officer came in and offered us some water tried to do small talk. He is the ex of my daughter's teacher and told us as much. We had to do the report over two days as on the first day my daughter was too tired to relay all the details. On the second appointment we had the two female police officers and her ex also joined us. It seemed like he had already talked to her teacher about it, but he denied it when I confronted him about it, citing confidentiality. I was told they would have a word with Astrid and Morton, but I doubt they took it seriously as all three kind of defended their actions. Wanting to know why I wouldn't let my daughter go to a party. When we got home we had a knock on the door in the evening and it was Astrid and Morton. I didn't open the door. On Saturday the 11th while my daughter was playing in the garden with my next door neighbours children she said Astrid was taking pictures of her from across the street. On the Sunday they came by again and kept knocking on the door, they said they knew I was inside and that they wanted to talk. I didn't open the door. I phoned the police and they said if they become violent call back. In the meantime just open the door and tell them you don't want to talk to them. I didn't and they left. They left a message in my postbox. It was a long message about how they felt connected to my daughter and how I should take better care of her. How they know how it feels like to lose a child and that they only want what is best for her. On the 15th I kept my daughter from the school as she said that Astrid's son kept teasing her. Instead I spoke to the principal about the matter and explained that I needed this absence validated. I took my daughter to the store and I think maybe I was followed because not five minutes had gone by when Astrid walked in and "bumped" into me by the dairy section. She apologised and blocked me in with her cart because I tried to get away. She started talking to my daughter and tried to stroke my baby's hair. So, I screamed. That made her walk away from me. The day after I found another note in my postbox telling me not to be so hysterical, and I have that saved. I phoned my husband to come home or find a reason to get home ASAP. On the 18th both Astrid and Morton confronted me in the park and wanted to know why I was keeping Julestjerne away from them due to a misunderstanding. I told them politely (Morton is a big guy and I am not as strong as him) that my husband was home (I lied). They walked away. I phoned the police and gave them the latest evidence on the harassment but they said they would have a word with the two. On Monday I attended a meeting with the principal and the teacher where she apologised, but she made it out that it was a misunderstanding. The principal was very nice and told the teacher to back off sternly and not to mix her professional life and private life. Astrid and Morton came by my house that evening, and while I was attending to the laundry in the basement they were talking to my girl in the garden and she let slip that her dad wasn't home yet. They gave her some cookies, but she threw them in the outside bin while they watched on. On Tuesday they confronted us on the way to school and asked me why I lied about my husband, luckily I wasn't alone and one of the neighbour's on my street told them to back off. On the way back from picking her up at the end of the day we took a taxi home. In the evening they were banging on my door again and they had their sons with them. I called the police, but they only arrived after they had left. I discussed it with my husband on the phone and he managed to get three days off, but he won't be home before this weekend as his workplace didn't see it as an emergency until yesterday's incident. Yesterday they came by again while we were in the park. I was pre occupied with my son and I noticed a tap on my shoulder. It was Morton holding my daughter and he said I should take better care of her as she might walk into the road while my attention is elsewhere. He made it out as if she had run into the street, but my daughter denied it. I grabbed her and the other children and left and packed some stuff. I asked my next door to collect my post and hold onto it while I booked a hotel. She informed me that the postoffice will do it for free for 14 days, but that she will look out for my house and note if they come by again. Words gone round that they are being a bit weird about my daughter. I have been staying in this hotel since and my husband is arranging ticket for us to visit my parents before the Christmas holidays. At this point I don't want to stay here anymore and my husband will have to ask for a transfer. I spoke to the principal and she said she would check in on my daughter in the morning and keep her at pick up time and I can pick her up from the office. I haven't told the principal about our moving plans just in case she mentions it to another teacher, and it gets back to Astrid's friend. I hate lying, but feel that if I don't it may put us at risk. One of my neighbours on the other side of the street said both Astrid and Morton have mentioned that they suspect that I neglect my child, and that they tried to insinuate that maybe I was too overwhelmed with four little ones while my husband was offshore. She told them I wasn't and they have now moved onto another neighbour trying to badmouth me. It seems like they are recruiting witnesses/helpers. So, my neighbour said it's best best to keep documentation in case they call CPS on us, and to get a copy and confirmation from the police that there is bad blood between us. My husband can deal with the paperwork and the aftermath, and join us when he can arrange a transfer, but I am not staying here anymore. A Black student was suspended for his hairstyle. The school says it wasn't discrimination
“Greg Poole, who has been district superintendent since 2006, said the policy is legal and teaches students to conform as a sacrifice benefitting everyone. “When you are asked to conform ... and give up something for the betterment of the whole, there is a psychological benefit,” Poole said. “We need more teaching (of) sacrifice.’” Sacrifice your freedom to benefit others! These two paragraphs made me sick. submitted by /u/hardcory00 to r/Libertarian [link] [comments]
