The absolute power of saying nothing during a salary offer
I just finished a marathon hiring process that took nearly six weeks and four rounds of interviews. By the time I got to the final call with the recruiter I was already exhausted and just wanted to see the numbers. When she finally dropped the offer it was a classic lowball move. It was about fifteen percent lower than the range we discussed in the first screening call. Usually this is where people start stuttering or trying to justify why they deserve more but I decided to try something different this time. I just stayed completely silent. I am talking about a full thirty seconds of dead air. I could hear her breathing on the other end of the line and it was probably the most uncomfortable half minute of my professional life. Most people feel the need to fill the void because silence feels like a failed connection but in a negotiation it is the ultimate leverage. I just sat there staring at my wall and waiting. I didn't say no and I didn't say yes. I just let the low number hang there like a bad smell in the room. The recruiter broke first. She started babbling about how the budget was tight and how they have great benefits but then she stopped herself when I still didn't respond. Then came the magic words. She said "Let me see if I can go back to the hiring manager and see if there is any wiggle room on the base pay." Ten minutes later she called me back with an extra twelve thousand dollars and a signing bonus. It was like the money just spawned out of thin air the moment I stopped talking. Companies spend thousands of dollars on these hiring cycles and the last thing a recruiter wants is to lose their top candidate over a few grand right at the finish line. They rely on you being desperate or polite. If you treat the offer call like a technical bug that needs a fix instead of a social interaction you win. Don't explain yourself and don't make excuses for why you need more money. Just shut up and let them realize they are about to lose a month of work because they wanted to save a few bucks on your salary. It is a game of chicken and the person who talks first usually loses. submitted by /u/Doormat_8JV to r/jobsearchhacks [link] [comments]

I ran my first official 5K in May of that year (33:10). Shortly after this, we got pregnant and welcomed our baby in early 2025. While I continued to run until December 2025, I stopped from January to April 2025. From April 2025 to December, I got back into running and increased my distance each month. Over the winter, I bundled up and got into winter running (as long as it was warmer than -20 Celsius) and continued to increase my distance. In March of this year, I started to do two runs a week. At the start of May, I tried a solo practice half marathon and clocked a 2:32:40. I spent the rest of May reducing my distance per run. The week before the half marathon, I did 2 easy 3km runs and hit the YMCA hot tub. Training Log May 2024 Calgary Marathon 5K Summer/Autumn 2024 June: ~18km total, long runs around 5km July: ~24km total, long runs reaching 6.5km August: ~29km total, long runs reaching 8.9km September: ~34km total, long runs reaching 10km October: ~49km total, long runs reaching 12.7km November: ~80km total (biggest month), long runs reaching 16km Winter 2024-2025 Switched to indoors runming over winter. But did not do that many runs. Early 2025 Took time off running after the arrival of a new baby. No runs from January through April 2025. Mid-2025 May 2025: 1 run, 5.5km June 2025: 1 run, 4km July 2025: 5 runs, ~27km total, longest run 6.6km August 2025: 5 runs, ~28km total, longest run 6km Fall 2025 September 2025: 6 runs, ~31km total, longest run 6km October 2025: 3 runs, ~17km total, longest run 8km (had a 2.5 week vacation). Time was 2:32:36. I set up a pitstop at my car and would stop 4 times for water. Continued with 14km and 12.7km the following weekend. Pre-race My race morning started at 4:00 AM. I drank some warm water with salt and maple syrup, had toast with PB and a black iced coffee (my usual), walked the dog (a short one), used the toilet (warm water helped), got dressed, and left. It was cool, so I had a windbreaker on. Jogged to the train station and caught the train at 5:34 AM. Tried to relax on the train and listened to my favourite comedy podcast (Stop Podcasting Yourself). Around 5:45 AM, I ate a banana. Got off the train around 6:20 AM, hit the washrooms, did a light 1km warmup jog, and did some stretching. While lining up in the corrals, I found the 2:30 pacer. My goal was to start behind her and try to catch up near the end of the race. When the race started I quickly lost sight of her. Race For the first few kilometers, the run felt significantly less enjoyable than my solo runs along the quiet river park pathways. Also, I knew I was starting slow, but it was disheartening watching waves of people pass me early on. I had to repeatedly tell myself to relax and just run. My pace was a all over the place as I got used to the new experience. My first 5k was 38:22. By KM 3, things picked up and I started to enjoy the atmosphere. During a hillly section with a turnaround (around KM 5 - 7), it was great high-fiving runners on both sides as I went up and came down. My second 5k was 36.27 By KM 12, my legs felt pretty good and I could feel myself speed up. My third 5k was 33:38 Around KM 15, just before a loop turnaround, I spotted the 2:30 pacer for the first time since the start. She was running on the opposite side of the road and seemed quite far ahead. My initial thought was that there was no way I could catch her. But with only 6k left, I wanted to try. I sped up and started to close the gap. Between KM 16 and KM 20, I had a 31:43 time for that 5K stretch and an average pace of 6:20 min/km. By KM 18, I caught up to the pacer and I stayed in sync with her for a bit. As we hit a downhill section, I took the speed boost and kept a steady pace on the uphill. I passed her and kept running. At KM 19, I turned off the metronome I listen to on my phone and switched over to some fast, upbeat music and just ran to the beat. When I hit the 700m sign, I started to go as fast as I could but it was a bit too early and had to tap the brakes for about 100 meters. At 300m out, I could see the finish line and I again ran as fast as I could. I crossed the finish at 2:28:40. Post-race I was completely empty after crossing the finish line. I picked up my medal and walked straight to the water and electrolytes. I had planned to walk back to the train and head home. However, I suddenly heard someone calling my name. I turned around and saw my wife had managed to make it to the finish line with our 14-month-old daughter :) Because of my daughter's morning nap schedule, we really didn't think she would be able to coordinate the timing. Seeing them standing there was hands down the absolute best part of the entire day. My wife ran the 10K event the day before, and our next big milestone is training together for her first half marathon. After a celebratory recovery stop at A&W for a burger, a zero-sugar root beer, and a blue Powerade, I got home for a hot shower and a solid 1-hour nap. I felt like 70% better by the afternoon (just some stiff knees) and went for a walk with my wife, daughter and dog. Ended up doing 46K steps for the day. Looking back on this entire experience, I enjoyed it so much. From the quiet training runs along the river to preparing for the race. In hindsight, I could have prepped a bit harder or done an proper training program but I feel like I can do that for my next one. I feel a lot healthier and better overall. I am hooked on runnining and my plan is to keep running 2 to 3 times a week. I want to do another half marathon this fall (either an official race or a solo time trial). Also I will train with my wife for her first half next spring. Thank you for reading my story. submitted by /u/Run_CMB to r/running [link] [comments]

The boys finale and overall season retrospective
Spoilers for the finale. Overall, the finale was incredibly rushed. I was shocked and awed when Homelander was killed and there were still 25 minutes left to do the Butcher Genocide storyline. Each half of the episode definitely needed to be its own episode. And they somehow rushed the episode without even using the Gen V cast, who somehow had to help the people from the prior episode even though they can drive themselves? Even the Peak’s death, while appropriate and what he deserved, was rushed. He went out too easily, when he can survive traveling that fast into the beach or severe water pressure. It definitely felt like the season was anchored by the Vought Rising setup, and overall budget issues tied with the 8 episode limit. They spent 2.5 episodes setting up Vought Rising, at the detriment of the season. If Bombsight was a legitimate hero who was grizzled by the world, and was tied into the main plot more such as helping to fight supes with Geisha with the Boys and then dying to Butcher’s final plan, then it would be fine. Instead, he is not or barely even mentioned after getting depowered. The tie in wasn’t a bad idea, but so horribly executed that it hurts the perception of the thing they tried to tie into. They could have made the Vought Rising tie in be the same episode as the Supernatural reunion, by having Marathon Man and Malchemical work with the Boys to find the V1. If there had been 13 episodes, most of the issues in the season could have been fixed because there would have been more time to cover every storyline. While the Peak, Homelander, Frenchie, and Kimiko (might be contentious but I was fine with it) finished their arcs well, MM’s was abandoned entirely after episode 2, Butcher and Soldier Boy let flip flopping too much, and Hughie’s arc of not becoming like Butcher despite everything was only semi-explored. MM’s whole story with Soldier Boy is to show how Butcher is going too far, that he is willing to work with MM’s Homelander. Soldier Boy is now sealed back into ice, not by MM, but by Homelander in a weird scene that felt like it undercut the potential tie in to Boys Mexico they’re planning. What’s the point of having the penultimate episode be called “the Frenchman the female and the man called mothers milk” if he’s the only one who doesn’t finish his arc (Kimiko became the ultimate weapon and Frenchie saved lives and got to tell Homelander the truth). Butcher’s writing (Karl Urban cooked with every scene) feels like the one of the greatest disappointments with this season. Despite becoming Kessler at the end of the last season, he still shows signs of empathy. If he’s doing that, he should be dying from the tumor. They should have had his only moment of empathy be when he sees Lenny in UE and lets him shoot, and let every other moment in the season be his manipulations to kill Homelander or all supes. It’s also terrible that his genocide plan, which had been built up to since season 4 and his decaying morals since season 2, was resolved in less time then it took me to write this entire post. But perhaps the greatest disappointment is how they tied into Gen V. They really didn’t even bother to make sure they got the third season before writing for them in this one. They set up Marie as one of the few who could fight Homelander, and she doesn’t even fight. Cate doesn’t even show up all season (except maybe as a cameo???) even though her powers don’t require CGI. They should have had more supes on Homelander’s side for Gen V to fight in the final episode, and explain that Marie can’t harm him that easily because of the V1, but her support allows everybody to be healed while fighting him and severely limits his speed to escape the fight. Why did they spend so much time on the Vought Rising tie in instead of utilizing the existing tie in? The Boys season 5 had better moments then season 4 all throughout, a more consistent plotline. But it’s severely hampered by its episode count and its writing. I don’t know if Amazon or Kripke or both are the main reason why this happened, but if feels like they got the recipe to a killer Mac and cheese, but they used the microwave instead of the stove, changed the recipe so it can be used in a future recipe rather then using good cheese from a previous recipe, and then only used some salt for flavoring. It’s not so bad it ruins the overall show, but I do feel like it will damage the reputation of the show and all future spinoffs. How can we be excited for Vought Rising? It can be as peak as Centuria or Land of the Lustrous, but we will only know that came at the cost of the main show. submitted by /u/PrimeTheGreat to r/CharacterRant [link] [comments]

First Half Marathon!
I ran my first half today!!!! It was a long road to get here. I was supposed to run last year, but had to take 6+ months off from running in 2025 due to injury (RED-S/tendonitis/stress fracture) and dealing with another two weeks off in March due to MTSS and achilles issues. But today I did it. The day started out a little rainy but that stopped before the 8 am race time and the weather was in the low 50s, overcast, and humid. Honestly, kind of perfect running weather. A goal: 2:15 B goal: 2:20 C goal: run the whole thing and hopefully come in around 2:30 I came in at just over 2:03. I am beyond thrilled. I loved every second (even the hill right before the finish line). I immediately signed up for Every Woman's Marathon next February. My first marathon at 46 seems like a great plan. Thank you so much to this community for all the tips about iron supplements, support during injury, discussion of fueling (during the race and training), and just - everything! submitted by /u/Snarfles55 to r/XXRunning [link] [comments]

Do you genuinely believe if someone can run a half marathon, they can run a full marathon?
I've done 5 half marathons, 27F. I'm a painfully average runner, i only run because i sign up to half marathons to give me motivation to go out and train. (Whilst raising money for charity). My friend works for a marathon company and has a free spot available for one of the big 5 next year, i feel stupid to not take it but i'm so scared. my logic is though, i'm doing a half marathon in september so i'll have already been training i guess. My question is to those who have done a marathon, do you think those who have ran a half are capable? submitted by /u/Mysterious-Tear8972 to r/Marathon_Training [link] [comments]

First official half marathon (2:28:40)
Hi everyone, I just saw a few post like these and wanted to share my journey. I hope to keep running and improve (my health, form, times and distances). Race Information Name: Servus Calgary Marathon (Centaur Subaru 21.1KM) Date: May 24, 2026 Distance: 21.1 km Location: Calgary, AB Shoes: New Balance 1080 v14 Time: 2:28:40 Average Heart Rate: 144 bpm Max Heart Rate: 171 bpm Goals | Goal | Description | Completed? | | 1 | Keep things easy for first 5K | Yes | | 2 | Steadily increase pace | Yes | | 3 | Get as close to 2:30 as possible | Yes | Splits | KM | Time | Avg HR | | 1 | 7:20 | 116 bpm | | 2 | 8:08 | 128 bpm | | 3 | 7:41 | 131 bpm | | 4 | 8:02 | 134 bpm | | 5 | 7:03 | 139 bpm | | 6 | 7:15 | 143 bpm | | 7 | 7:09 | 141 bpm | | 8 | 6:40 | 144 bpm | | 9 | 6:56 | 146 bpm | | 10 | 6:38 | 145 bpm | | 11 | 6:38 | 145 bpm | | 12 | 6:34 | 145 bpm | | 13 | 6:51 | 146 bpm | | 14 | 6:39 | 148 bpm | | 15 | 6:39 | 149 bpm | | 16 | 6:40 | 152 bpm | | 17 | 6:38 | 156 bpm | | 18 | 6:17 | 158 bpm | | 19 | 6:10 | 160 bpm | | 20 | 6:00 | 159 bpm | | 21 | 6:22 | 162 bpm | Training I’m a 41-year-old guy who started running in 2024.

Thank you so much to this community for all the tips about iron supplements, support during injury, discussion of fueling (during the race and training), and just - everything! submitted by /u/Snarfles55 to r/XXRunning [link] [comments]

this is your sign to run your first half marathon with your best friend
(pink) a year ago I couldnt even run a mile without stopping and gasping for air. I slowly learned to be deliberate in training, prioritize recovery, and stayed sober through everything. Everything in life just feels easier when you have running to lean on 🫶🏼 submitted by /u/gumballtimemachine to r/BeginnersRunning [link] [comments]

Half marathon selfishness
This morning I went out to watch and support runners in the half. Now, the run goes right past the bottom of my road, and there were flyers dropped into the houses 2 weeks ago.Signs were put up along the road saying "race route". This morning there were metal barriers blocking the road so no cars could leave/drive into the race. One lad came out going mad he couldn't get through. Started moving the barriers. People had to stand in front of the car to tell him to stop, but he didn't care. Got out and started screaming at the race volunteers and said he'd go during a gap. This was as the first wave of runners that were going past, so there literally was no gap. He started driving forward, almost hitting spectators standing on the side of the road watching and blocking him. The guards had to come over and put him back in his box. Like wtf is wrong with people. Literally was willing to drive straight through a crowd of standing people and oncoming runners because it was a minor inconvenience. submitted by /u/tevenall13 to r/irelandsshitedrivers [link] [comments]

This seasons is just missed opportunity after missed opportunity and the budget use is also questionable
I refuse to participate in the "filler episode" discussion, but I'm having some concerns. After the last two episodes I'm genuinely worried, the writing has been all over the place and the fact that people think the last episode was good progression, because we got any progression at all, is a sign, that expectations are getting lower episode by episode. We have three episodes left and they are still introducing new characters while also killing them off in the same episode, while also skipping over the actually interesting parts, introducing side plots or explaining backgrounds, which should have been done way earlier. So yes, maybe not a filler, but it should not have a place in the 5th episode of the final. The conversations between characters are getting more unbearable, it feels like they tried to cram in either a comedic relief or something gross/sex related/gorey every few minutes to a point, where a lot doesn't feels serious anymore. They are trying so hard to be funny and give characters funny one-liners, it feels almost like a marvel movie. I'm also annoyed by the very obvious meme baiting but that's another topic. Most important or actually exciting character-interactions get a fraction of screen time in comparison. Let's take Stan Edgar for example. We had the chance to see the first conversation between Homelander and Stan after years, a chance to give us interesting, tense dialogue, between two characters with a complex relationship and past. The same goes for Stan and Soldier Boy to some extent. Instead the first conversation happened off-screen(Why!?) and we get a rushed 2 minute scene, where everyone exchanges maybe 3 sentences and then shifting the focus towards Mr. Marathon. We then spend a third of the episode at his place, where some random characters, that get killed in the same episode, receive more screen time. They spent probably a good amount of their special effects budget showing us these characters getting killed, while we haven't received a single well choreographed, flashed out fight scene. We haven't even seen Butcher use his power in a meaningful way yet. Let's take Soldier Boy and Butcher as another example. We could have gotten an actually interesting conversation and/or an actual fight scene with the slightest bit off choreo. Instead they talk for 30 seconds, butcher throws a car and that's kind of it, their dynamic and relationship is not being discussed any further, despite being way more impactful than most other. Or Homelander and Ryan. We finally get a confrontation, after Ryan has been set up as a main plot device for 3 seasons, but they both get like 3 lines, we get a very underwhelming fight, an admittedly actual meaningful scene with Homelander punching him - but then Ryan disappears again. Or A-Train A-Trains final scene was executed incredibly well no doubt, but they could have shown a single scene of A-Train and Homelander fighting and let A-Train show the full potential of his power atleast once. Or Homelander and Butcher, we see Homelander in his most vulnerable spot ever since the show started. Of course we don't want to take away from the final confrontation, but why not add some depth to their conversation, why not give them a bit more screentime together. Whenever a confrontation with high stakes happens, that the audience has been waiting for, they either don't take the time to flash it out or nothing meaningful happens and it makes it very frustrating when the remaining time is used for uninteresting characters or sex jokes. My point is not, that these scenes are bad or should drag on forever, my point is that they feel rushed and feel like wasted potential, when we spent half an episode with Starlight's dad or get more scenes exploring Black Noir's relationship with Adam the Director or Mr. Marathon running through people nobody cares for, while skipping over other scenes. It's very disappointing because they had every chance to set up some of the most interesting character interactions of the whole series after they spent 4 seasons building everything up and they waste it by focusing on sideplots and often try-hard funny dialogue. submitted by /u/Common-Image-5628 to r/TheBoys [link] [comments]

Smartwatch lost all my workout data 500 meters befote finishing a half-marathon
Turned 21 today so I decided I wanted to do my very first half-marathon. Took this photo since I wanted one with the recording watch. I then checked a few more times to see my distance: 18.16k. 19.83k. 20.69k. I checked again a few minutes later to find the watch at its home display, with no signs of any workout happening. No log in the history either, meaning that it wasn't an accidental pause. Mildly infuriating since my body knows it did the 21k under 3 hours, but I guess there's no Strava gold medal for this one submitted by /u/21bamejs to r/mildlyinfuriating [link] [comments]

6 months - 210lbs > 145lbs
I was 30, had two babies but I was so unhappy, depressed, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t focus and doing everything I could just to get through the day. So at 9 months postpartum I decided I needed to get fitter, just so I could play with my kids and not be out of breath after 5 minutes. I started small, walking with my 9 month old in the pushchair while my toddler was at nursery, and eating in a calorie deficit making healthier choices. I finally started running around September and adding weight/strength training at this time to support my running goals. I’ve went from not being able to run for more than 30 seconds to signing up to run a half marathon next year, am I crazy?! Who knows! Just this morning I ran a 10k and found it hard but manageable!! I’m also extremely lucky that my husband has supported everything I have tried and given me the time to go and do it. My mental health has improved drastically, I’m no longer depressed and actually living each day with purpose I believe I had undiagnosed sleep apnoea which has gone and I now get good quality sleep (when my one year old allows) Exercise is something I look forward to! My whole mindset has changed and it’s actually a privilege to move my body. I have more energy now even though I’m more active during the day and I spend the day playing with my two girls - which is what it was all about. My cardio fitness is on the up and showing as ‘above average’. I genuinely didn’t think I could do this and I’m still not finished yet… I thought about it for years, I’ll start tomorrow… one day I’ll just do it… I’ll start on Monday… Well I started on a random Thursday and haven’t looked back. It is possible, you’ve just got to show up for yourself. submitted by /u/AdhesivenessAny8450 to r/fit [link] [comments]

Former couch potato runs first half marathon
Hi everyone, I've (31 M) mostly been a lurker here and quietly absorbed the wisdom you all share. Today, though, I want to share a personal milestone. Just over eight months ago on August 29th 2024, after a painful but beautiful hike, my wife and I came to a realization: that we were terribly out of shape, and both of us were about 27lbs overweight and approaching obesity. We committed to eating better and working out, initially we started jogging and couldn't do a kilometer without stopping. Days into our 'training' I ran across an ad for Runna and we started a 5k program. During this initial block, my goal was to be able to run a 5k at a reasonable pace (whatever that means!), and my first attempt at an "all out" 5k was on September 23rd 2024 (about a month into training) and I could muster a 28:50 in mostly zone 5 (picture 3). Somewhere towards the end of the Runna program, we both got a Garmin Forerunner 55 because we started to like the sport and wanted to keep on running! After the Runna program, I immediately started a 5k plan using Garmin coach (coach Greg), setting a time goal of 23:10, ambitious I know! The end of the Garmin coach program was set to end December 19th, and we wanted to gift ourselves a strong, healthy end to the year, reaching a new level of fitness we could only dream of a few months prior. I was 9 seconds shy of meeting my 5km time goal, completing it in 23:19! I still counted this as a major win, considering a couple of months prior running a continuous kilometer was a challenge. After a short break, and probably against the advice of most people here, I jumped into a Garmin Coach plan for a half marathon. Just for context, I only ran one season of cross country back in high school, so this was new ground for me. After a couple of minor injuries (dips you see in my Strava screenshot) and learning to run in the winter and sometimes having to run on a dreadful treadmill when it was too cold, I signed up to the local half marathon. I set up a time goal that was probably too ambitious for my capabilities back in January, and the thought of running a pace that was hard to maintain at the time, let alone for the entirety of a half marathon was daunting! I powered through the program nervously and at the same time excited for what i could potentially achieve. All my training sessions slowly went from being 90% zone 5 to a healthy mix of zone 4 and zone 3. For all my effort I was rewarded with a first half marathon time of 1:48:20. Needless to say, running has been a gift, not only for my physical well-being but my mental well-being as well. On the downside now we have to budget for shoes, and better nutrition haha. Being 27lbs lighter is good though. Tl;dr: From couch potato to running half marathon in 8 month. submitted by /u/Prestigious-Cell-220 to r/Garmin [link] [comments]

Is it embarrassing to run a half marathon at a 12/13 minute mile pace?
31M, 6’, 245lbs built like Gru from despicable me but with a slightly smaller nose. In December, after the birth of my first child, I impulsively signed up for a half marathon in October of this year. I have never run, never been a runner, and I have (multiple times in the past four months) accepted that I cannot do this and it was a mistake. But I’ve done my best to ignore that little voice and try to keep at training anyway. My pace is not fast. I started off at around 14 minutes per mile and have since gotten it down to around 13 but not consistently. I’m wondering if it is indeed too embarrassing and slow for an actual organized very large race. I see people posting their results in other running subs and it makes me that much more anxious that I could be in the same race with people who run 13.1 in the time it takes for me to run a 10k?? I know they have pacers and the DNFmobile that goes around if you take too long so that’s a pretty big fear of mine too but I’m wondering if (in your eyes) it’s respectable enough to try anyway? I still have a lot of training to do and it’s overwhelming most of the time but I’m not sure if I’m in too deep here. Help me beginnerrunning, you’re my only hope. submitted by /u/bigrunningboi to r/beginnerrunning [link] [comments]

Ran my first half marathon today, fully garmin trained!
25 M, fairly athletic background but have been VERY lazy since high school. No running in background. In early October I decided I wanted to get in better shape, and so I bought a garmin forerunner 265 and signed up for a half marathon! Since then I’ve followed the Garmin smart coach (lots of base running), and been fully trained using that! I ran 7 days a week, with the occasional rest day, and never missed a day of running. My initial goal when I started was a 1:44, but that was eventually adjusted to a sub 1:30 (thought this was too ambitious), but today I ran a 1:26! I’m super happy about this and proud of myself, and I’ll be a garmin loyalist for the rest of my life lol. Thought this could be helpful for people asking if garmin plans are effective! submitted by /u/varietyman13 to r/Garmin [link] [comments]

A super slow runner's first half marathon
Race Information Name: Riverton Half Marathon Date: March 23, 2024 Distance: 13.1 miles Location: Riverton, Utah Website: https://www.rivertonutah.gov/recreation/programs/races/half-marathon.php Time: 3:16:17 Goals Goal Description Completed? A Finish race Yes B No walking Yes C Finish in under 3:30:00 Yes Splits Mile Time 1 13:12 2 14:03 3 14:36 4 15:16 5 14:45 6 13:50 7 14:12 8 15:10 9 15:32 10 15:35 11 16:16 12 16:21 13 16:03 Training I started thinking about training for a half marathon last September with my sister-in-law, and we attempted to do a half marathon (unofficial) at the beginning of December. But both of our phones died at mile 9 and we had no other form of GPS or tracking, so we only ended up doing about 12 miles before getting back to her place. She went back out and did the last mile but I did not have it in me. So the next week I signed up for this race so I could actually complete the 13.1 miles. I started training in January and followed the training plan on the NRC app. I really enjoyed this training plan and it worked really well for my schedule. Since I had already been running plenty in the fall/winter, it wasn't hard to work my mileage back up. The longest run of the training block was 20k, which I did 3 weeks ago, in 35+ mph winds, which turned out to be very helpful for the conditions I ran the actual race in. Race The race started at 9am and I very quickly ended up in the very last spot. For the first 6-7 miles I could occasionally see one other person in front of me, but for the last half of the race I was running completely alone. Miles 1-6 were fairly easy, felt good, and I was going a little bit faster than my goal pace. Then, miles 6-10 were where it got really hard. At this point I couldn't see any of the other racers, and I was on a very exposed part of the race, where the wind was just brutal. Basically, I was running into a strong headwind for 4-5 miles. Around mile 10 was the hardest hill of the course, and that was the closest I came to walking. Miles 11 and 12 were by far my slowest, as I was getting very tired and there were fewer places that my family/friends could come cheer me on. I picked it up a little bit in mile 13 but I struggled a lot. The wind and hills in the second half drained me so badly. Throughout the race my family and friends cheered me on in various places, and my dad ran/walked (yes, I run slow enough that people can walk the same speed as I run) with me for parts, which was so amazing and encouraging. The volunteers at the aid stations were also awesome, and the police who were closing the course behind me were so encouraging and nice to me. Post-race I finished so tired, but luckily all the race officials were still there, and almost everything was still set up. My dad put my medal on me as I crossed the finish line. I was definitely crying a little bit. Most of my family and a few of my friends were there when I finished, and the race officials were so nice and supportive of me, even though I finished very last. After I had recovered a little bit my family went out for lunch at a burger place and we got literally every fried thing on the menu, which was so perfect for after a race. Even though this race was super hard, it was overall a great experience and I'm so grateful to my family and friends for supporting me throughout training and the race, and the race officials for keeping aid stations and the finish line set up even for the very slowest runner in the race. Made with a new race report generator created by /u/herumph. Edit: Thank you so much for all the kind comments and congratulations! This sub is one of the most supportive and lovely groups I've ever found on the internet

Update: I have now lost over 200 pounds, signed up for half marathon
Friends, I had a lot of feedback from my last post, so I wanted to give you an update. In late September, I had lost 157 pounds in 12 months. Since then, I have lost an additional 45 pounds. At the time, I had just run my first (virtual) 10K race. I am now signed up for a half marathon for April. On Friday, I ran over 10 miles in 1 hour, 36 minutes. (UPDATED PHOTO) I have found that it's harder to keep losing weight. Even as I step up the intensity and length of my workouts, I have found it a little more challenging (but not impossible). My body also looks fat. I have loose skin all over my body, which makes me still feel fat at times. But guys, I have to tell you it's amazing to be down to 218. I still want to lose a little more, and think I still can. I also want to say something about companies like Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Advocare and others. I am sure they truly believe in their product. I am sure they work for some people. But I believe they have given people the wrong idea about losing weight. There is a cost of entry to those programs (in some cases, a very expensive cost of entry). It gives so many people the idea that if you don't have the money, you can't diet... THIS IS SO WRONG! Every bit of research out there shows eating a low-calorie, well-balanced diet coupled with regular exercise leads to weight loss. That isn't that hard. I really feel if you just watch what you eat (I have used an app, but pen and paper still works), and compared that to how many calories you burn a day, odds are, you'll become fit. Anyway, thanks for everyone who supported me. Below, I have attached my post from late September: https://www.reddit.com/r/loseit/comments/j2z34u/my_weight_loss_journey_1_year_later/ My weight loss journey 1 year later June 2, 2019, I waddled my 420-pound body up Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls. My wife and I have taken an annual road trip for our anniversary every year since getting married in 2014. Our 2019 trip was special as it was the first time I had ever spent the night outside of the United States. I had always been fairly athletic despite my size. I played basketball and tennis almost every day growing up. My diet, however, was horrific. I lived off Hot Pockets and ice cream. But exercising every day at least kept me from ballooning as a teenager. Then adulthood came, and the perceived time I had for exercise was replaced with work and chores. Leisure no longer felt like a priority. Walking never felt like a challenge, and the walk from our hotel to the falls wasn’t hateful as it was downhill. But returning from the falls, I was gassed. The simple act of walking had fatigued me to the point that I had to stop. I was shameful. I had never really felt “unhealthy” until this point. Shamers be shaming August 3, 2019, was a gut-wrenching day for many of us in the US. That Saturday, I had just taken Jenna’s car to get an oil change. We found out her rear brake lights would not work, and it appeared there were electrical malfunctions. We were planning on replacing her car at the end of the year, so leaning of a potentially expensive electrical issue prompted us to decide on buying a new car. When I came home, I heard that there was a massacre at the El Paso Walmart. I checked in with our Saturday person at work, and she was going to need some relief at some point (any one who has worked in breaking news understands how draining these massacres are). After working an unexpected Saturday shift, I went to bed planning on teaching a few classes in the morning and then going to buy Jenna a new car. After briefly falling asleep, I received a text that another massacre happened, this time just 15 miles down the road in Dayton. Having graduated from Wright State and then working at the Dayton Daily News, I had many friends living in that immediate area. My thoughts turned to them as I now had to work another shift, this time in an area I knew quite well. While reporting on the events taking place in Dayton, some of my tweets went viral. Immediately, some of the responses weren’t about the shooting, but about my weight. There is this huge tragedy happening in Dayton, and my weight was the issue for some on social media. To be fair to other reporters, this was a new experience for me. For many of my (especially female) colleagues, the vitriol of fat-shamers can be far worse. I am not an on-camera journalist, but for those who are, the shaming can be downright vitriolic. But given the two tragedies going on, it was tough to process this hate I was receiving. A few weeks later, I watched a segment on Bill Maher’s show about how there should be more fat-shaming in society. It had me thinking that all of those people tweeting at me during another tragic night in our country were the ones who were right, and who am I to judge them? I decided to get a gym membership. But the very thing that was driving me to get in shape was what was scaring me off. If these fat-shamers are so spiteful online, how much shame will I face at a gym? Last September, I went for a walk at VOA Park in Butler County, Ohio. The loop there is 1.5 miles. I felt so exhausted just going once around that loop. I had enough. I knew I wanted to get into shape. For several weeks starting around late September 2019, weighing over 420 pounds, I started walking as fast and long as I could. The 1.5-mile walk quickly became 3-mile walks. While I wasn’t seeing results on the scale, I was feeling better mentally. Shamers replaced with cheerleaders After a few walks, I already ran into a few folks at VOA Park who saw how much of a sweat I was working up, and gave me so much encouragement to keep moving. I never expected to get thumbs up from people. You quickly realize that for every person out there shaming you, there are dozens ready to push you and help you. As the weather turned colder, I finally worked up the courage to enter a gym. And it’s true about Planet Fitness… it truly is the “No Judgement Zone.” People there were so wonderful. Hearing people say “good work” was a great affirmation that I was in the right place. My time spent exercising prompted me to do a lot of research on how to lose weight, and what I could do to drop weight. There are SO MANY diets out there. Which one is right for me? It seemed the one constant was you have to watch your calories. If you burn more calories than you consume, you’ll lose weight. I am pretty good with numbers and statistics, so I realized that this could be a winner. So I decided to go with a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet. Coupled with exercise, I found myself losing weight QUICKLY. In the month of December alone, I lost 25 pounds. I have not put anything in my body that I don’t track. I track every calorie I eat. It is a great way to hold oneself accountable. Last December was when exercising no longer felt like a chore but routine. I was no longer “forcing myself” to exercise, and had to force myself to take a few day off for rest. This habit of eating 2,000 calories a day and exercising almost every day simply became my routine, and unlike past diets, it felt like this one worked for me. If I wanted to have a cookie, I could, but I had to make up for it somewhere else. My habit of eating a whole package of Oreos quickly disappeared, however. I have bought a few package of cookies since, but it seems they spoil before I get a chance to finish the container. Then came COVID March 11 started off a good day. My weigh-in had me down 78 pounds since October. I went to the gym and had a good workout on the stair stepper. I then went to work. Our whole world felt like it changed in one night. That evening, the NBA suspended the season, President Trump suspended travel between Europe and the US, and Tom Hanks announced he had the coronavirus. It felt like all of a sudden, the coronavirus was going to have a major impact on our way of life for months to come. Leaving work that night in a bit of a haze, all I wanted to do was stress eat. I got off at an interstate exit and was about to order a midnight McDonald’s hamburger. Then when I got to the drive thru, I saw my gym membership dangling from my keys and decided not to undo the effort I put in that day at the gym. So I drove home and opted for a small, more calorie-friendly snack. In the days to come, I decided to workout from home. I found myself doing step aerobics on a daily basis, thanks to my wife finding a fantastic YouTube channel. I am so thankful for Jenny Ford for her encouragement as she is a great step aerobics instructor. Even though I don’t do step aerobics as often, I plan on doing more as the weather gets colder. It’s a great full-body workout that requires very little equipment. And it doesn’t require going to an indoor gym during a pandemic! Becoming a runner At the start of 2020, I thought it would be cool to do a 5K. But I didn’t just want to walk one, so I decided if I could go 5Ks in less than 45 minutes, I’d sign up for one. Little did I know the only options for 2020 would be virtual. I never really thought I’d enjoy running. It never appealed to me. In May, I tested myself by seeing how fast I could go at the park. It was the first time I had jogged or walked in two months. I crossed the proverbial finish line in less than 40 minutes. YES! Time to sign up for a 5K! It also turns out running is a great way to burn calories. This started to become my daily routine. It also is such a great way to clear the mind. I put on some music and don’t think about work or the ills of the world. This is also where I picked up more cheerleaders. I never truly planned on documenting my weight loss journey. I thought to myself I am doing this for myself, and not those dreaded fat-shamers. But I posted some photos of my first runs, and your support was so overwhelming. It truly motivated me to keep going. On July 3, I ran my first official 5K. Not that I was counting, but my photo from that day had over 200 Facebook likes... more than I got for my wedding. HAHA It was time for a new challenge: a 10K. I completed my first 10K on September 14 in 1 hour, 11 minutes. A few days later, I set my 5K PR at 29 minutes. Let’s say beyond the improvement of my physical health, my mental health has improved so much too. I have felt so fortunate to have my health and fitness back during a time that so many are suffering, I decided to organize a 5K to benefit Feeding America. A small group of friends have joined, and we have already enough participants to contribute nearly 2,500 meals to Feeding America. If anyone is interested to join, it is on Facebook as the “Beat COVD, Beat Hunger 5k Fun Run.” What’s next As I end my first year of diet and exercise, I can announce I have lost 157 pounds. Even at 263 pounds, I am still considered “obese.” There is more weight I want to lose as I want to continue doing more with running. I have already started planning on running a half marathon in 2021. Nine months ago, even the idea of doing a 5K didn’t feel like a given. I understand losing weight is not as challenging as maintaining weight loss. But I am sure with the constant support I have received from so many of you, I will give it my all in keeping the weight off. One reason I write this is because I have gotten several messages from others saying how my new lifestyle has caused them to get more fit. I can’t tell you what it means to be an inspiration to others. Given all of the perceived hate in the world, love is what rules. And I have felt the love from my dear friends and family, especially Jenna! Thank you to everyone for your love and support. You all mean so much to me and I feel so proud that I have been able to inspire others to get out and enjoy the outdoors! submitted by /u/jjboggs to r/loseit [link] [comments]

Yesterday I ran my first half marathon and since they were all cancelled my family and friends made me a “finish line.” I feel like I’m floating with joy
Two years ago I had some pretty severe postpartum depression. I started to train for a 5k and little by little I started to feel alive again. I completely came off my medication and now I enjoy life with my son. Flash forward to when COVID hit and I needed something to look forward to so I signed up for a half marathon! It’s been an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling process for me but I was so disappointed when every race in my area was cancelled due to COVID. Instead of cancelling or waiting until next year, I decided to make my own route and do it alone. I told my friends and family and they all came together to make me a “finish line.” The run itself was my hardest run because it was so hot and humid. I wanted to quit so many times because I felt like I could faint at any moment and my hamstring was so tight but I just kept focusing on everyone I loved waiting for me and how 2 years ago I really didn’t want to live anymore but here I am today doing the hardest thing I’ve ever done. As soon as I turned the corner and saw my son and the people I love most waiting for me I burst into tears. I never expected to feel so accomplished and elated in this process but it has brought me so much joy and fulfillment. I was shooting for an under 2 hour time, but I finished at 2:15 with an average pace of 10”25. I am still proud of this time though because it was by far my hottest and hardest long distance run! Edit: Wow I didn't expect to get this many responses! Thank you beautiful, kind fellow runners for your words of encouragement, love and sharing your stories as well. You have made this accomplishment even sweeter. :) submitted by /u/lookatzeemoon to r/running [link] [comments]

I ran my first half marathon today after competing in a strongman comp 15 days earlier
Greetings Internet, As some of you are aware, I have a blog about training online and I wrote up my whole experience there, but I also wanted to just offer a quick-ish write up on the topic of running and lifting. STARTING WITH THE END/STATS I am 33, turning 34 this month. 5'9, 205lbs. I finished my half marathon today with a time of 2:00:36, so keep that in mind for gauging your opinion on my thoughts on running and lifting. And with that, I finished my strongman competition 4th out of 10 while weighing in 15lbs under the weight limit. BACKGROUND I have been lifting for 19 years, and ran often 17 years ago, but have since been an infrequent runner, usually only gearing up for the Murph WOD once a year in May. I started training for my strongman competition about 3 months out from the comp, and 1 month into the training decided I wanted to run a half marathon my wife had signed up for, mainly because I make bad decisions. TRAINING I settled on running twice a week on top of lifting 4 times a week and a strongman events day 1 day a week. This shook out to needing to have one 2 a day per week, which ended up being on my press day on Monday. I’d run in the AM and lift right after lunch. I’d then squat on Tues, Bench on Wed, do a long run on Thurs, day off on Friday, Deadlift on Sat and events on Sun. This was, of course, on an ideal week. Life occasionally gets in the way, such as working the night shift 3 weeks in a row at one point during the training. I had a lot of time during the day to train, but since I wanted to walk my kid to school and pick them up, things got compromised. Of my 2 runs, I’d do a 6.55 mile run on Monday. I started with a 6.3 mph run (9:30 mile time) as that seemed sustainable for me. Each week, I'd bump the speed up by .1 mph. On Thursdays, I'd do a longer run, starting at 8 miles, then 9, then 10, then 8 (week of my strongman competition), and then a 6.55 mile run after that, since it was the week before the race. These runs were always a 6.3 mph. I set the incline on the treadmill to 1, to make it closer to running on real terrain. On the final 6.55 mile run, I set it to incline 2, since I didn't want to make the speed any faster. NUTRITION Training for a half marathon AND a strongman competition while trying to fill out a weightlcass you're severely underweight for requires a LOT of food. I don't count calories or macros, but I was eating pretty much every 2 hours, very high protein and fat, while keeping the carbs on the low side in most cases. Meat and vegetables are my primary food sources, with quest bars regularly featuring as well. HOWEVER, on my long run days, I would make a habit of getting the Taco Bell $5 Nacho Box, primarily because it was cheap and a lot of calories and carbs. I was able to put on about 7lbs through the process, and got stronger in my gym lifts while getting faster and better endurance. LESSONS LEARNED The big thing here is the value of General Physical Preparedness (GPP). So many folks in lifting just plain don’t get what this is, but it’s your ability to perform when the need arises, irrespective of what that need may be. I may compete in strongman, sure, but I keep myself fit across a bunch of different domains, and it meant that, when the time came to prep for the half, I didn’t need to spend much time focusing that general fitness toward a specific task. And I’m not saying this as though I crushed a half marathon and set a record, but considering people need a 9 week plan with 3 running workouts a week to get from the couch to running a 5k, I think that I could go over 4 times that distance training in fewer weeks with less workouts is saying SOMETHING. Be happy to answer any questions. submitted by /u/MythicalStrength to r/Fitness [link] [comments]

Woman who mistakenly signed up for half-marathon in Worcester, England, ends up running 13 miles by herself in Worcester, Mass.
When I read the article title, I could've sworn it was a satirical piece on The Onion! Thought that others would also find it amusing that this can actually happen in real life. It's nice that the race organizers will be sending her a shirt and medal. https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2019/09/20/woman-who-mistakenly-signed-for-half-marathon-worcester-england-ends-running-miles-herself/2j9i8CVYX3Pdivo9oqMlgO/story.html submitted by /u/theturbanator1699 to r/running [link] [comments]

TIFU by volunteering for a fundraiser half marathon without knowing the run route.
Last Saturday I volunteered to be a worker for a half marathon race fundraiser. After I checked in I was driven to the last water point, at a T intersection about 2 km from the finish, so I was told. But I was told nothing else and I asked no further questions. Within 15 minutes a pack of very fast runners begin to approach. Their leader yelled to me "Which way?" Well, I had no fucking idea. I could either guess left or right. But, the road they were to turn on was a one-way road. So I directed them in the direction of the one-way, towards downtown. I had a 50-50 chance of directing them in the correct direction. I guessed wrong. For the next 30 minutes or so I directed runners in the wrong direction until one of the race organizers drove by and caught me in the middle of directing another group downtown. We spent the next hour sending vans downtown finding runners and bringing them back like lost kids at a park. TL;DR I directed the first 40-60 half-marathoners in a race in the wrong direction (when they were 2km from the finish) causing them to run around aimlessly. submitted by /u/cooterholland to r/tifu [link] [comments]
