*TW for details about medical emergencies and surgery* This is an update to my last post, but I also need to vent and keep myself from spiraling right now. My 1.5 year old went in this past Tuesday for his tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and fundoplication. He also has a congenital heart defect (partial AVSD). The plan has always been that he would be having his AVSD repair when he’s between 2.5-3yo, when he’s bigger and stronger, because it’s a major open heart surgery. We still aren’t entirely sure why, but toward the end of surgery on Tuesday, all of his vitals dropped and he started to have trouble with his heart. They were able to stabilize him, and they did an echocardiogram which showed severe valve leakage. We can’t know for sure if this is somehow related to the surgery, or if this would have happened regardless. Either way, his team made the decision that he needs his AVSD repair now. He has been in the PICU since Tuesday, and they’ve kept him heavily sedated for the most part to reduce strain on his heart. Then today at 2:15pm he was taken to the OR for his AVSD repair. We were told it would be between 4.5-6 hours. It’s 4:31 as I’m typing this. It feels like time is moving so, so slowly right now. I am a ball of pure anxiety right now. I know this is all kind of a jumbled mess - I haven’t slept much since Tuesday, and I’m writing this to keep myself focused on something other than staring at the time. My husband and I have been taking turns being at the hospital with our son and the hotel with our daughter. We’re both trying not to scare her, because she is so worried about him - but I’m sure she can see that we are too. We’ve managed to stay near the hospital in a hotel for the past two nights, but we cannot afford more than that, and we checked out this morning. I have no idea what we are going to do for tonight yet, but I’m considering that a problem for later. Luckily, my husband was able to take an additional 4 days off work, and his boss was understanding given the circumstances. We’re on the waiting list for Ronald McDonald House, but there is one family above us on the list as well, so I’m not very hopeful that space will open up for us. We don’t have the gas to drive home and back here every day, and our daughter can’t visit him in the hospital until he’s moved from the PICU to the cardiac step down unit. He’s going to be in the PICU for another 2-3 days and then in the cardiac step down unit for 5-6 days. It will all depend on how he’s doing. They only allow one parent to stay here with him through the night. Once he’s able to come home, full recovery will be about 6-8 weeks. Please send some love our way - healing energy, support, and/or prayers are all greatly appreciated. We really need all of the strength and energy we can get right now to pull our little guy through this. His name is Noah, if anyone would like to say a prayer for him. 💚 I just want to hold my baby. It’s all I can think about. I need him to be okay, I need to see him open his eyes. I am just completely crushed. I lost my lifelong best friend to cancer 15 years ago in May and as hard as that hit me, I have never grieved for anything in my life like I have to loss of my Brutus. To say that his mom and I are devastated is just not a strong enough word. Brutus was 12 1/2, rescued from a “breeder” that had left him to die in a cage behind her house as a tiny baby puppy because for whatever reason she just did not deem him desirable enough. He was discovered covered in fleas by a young exterminator and was told he could take him if he wanted him. Later that day that young man had a teeth cleaning appointment and was taking about it at the dentist office. The office manager at the dentist office that day was my fiancé, later my wife, and she said let me check if we can take him. I was at home in bed with H1N1 flu and running close to 102 fever when she sent me the pic of his tiny tiny self. My response was simply, “bring him home”. I got to meet him later that evening when they made it home and when we were introduced he promptly pooped on the bed, and we were off and running. That was December of 2013, and he has been the best, most perfect Good Boy since. Every body who know Brutus loved him, and I made several posts here through the years showing him off to you all. His mom and I did everything we could every single day to give him the best life possible. It was such a miracle that he even ended up with us, saying yes to him might be the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. Through pancreatitis shortly after Christmas 2015, and then a serious scare from an allergy to chicken in 2022, to having 13 skin tumors removed just 7 months ago, his little body had fought so hard through the years and he had been so brave, it was finally time for him to rest. Again I cannot thank this community enough for giving his mom and I a place to share his pics and stories through the years and for your words of comfort and prayer when needed as well. Our brave boy Milky has already gone through leg amputation to save his life. The infection in his leg was very severe, and this surgery was the only way to stop his pain. Right now, Milky is still recovering. Wound healing after an amputation takes time, and his body is trying its best to heal. Unfortunately, he has also developed an upper respiratory infection, so he is not eating well at the moment. He is receiving treatment and we are monitoring him closely. Please remember Milky in your prayers if you can help for his treatment in anyway please do. “Whatever you ask for in prayer… it will be yours.” “If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” “The prayer of faith will save the one who is sick.” Those are the claims. My Argument If those promises reflect reality, even imperfectly, we should expect to see SOME difference in outcomes. Not perfection. Not miracles on demand. Just something measurable. But we don’t. Christians get sick at the same rates. They recover at the same rates. They experience the same chronic pain, disability, and loss. They die from disease at the same rates as everyone else. Prayer doesn’t leave a trace. The outcomes are identical. And that’s not what you’d expect if a personal, responsive, healing God were intervening, even quietly. Conclusion So this isn’t about theology or motives or “testing God.” It’s a coherence problem. If prayer changes reality, why are the outcomes the same? And if the outcomes are the same, in what meaningful sense are these promises being fulfilled? I’m not asking why God might not heal. I’m asking where the evidence is that he does.
