UPDATE: this date is over, but I have one coming up that I am incredibly invested in. I really like the guy and would like to have an outfit that flatters me and that I feel confident in. I plan to go shopping a bit so I am open to suggestions, particularly if you know of a place with affordable stylists. Kate just completed the National Three Peaks Challenge, climbing the highest summits in Scotland, England and Wales in less than 24 hours. She did it to highlight life after cancer and raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Kate climbed alone with support from Mountain Rescue and was met at the bottom of the final mountain by her husband, children, parents and brother. I’m getting married this summer and I’ve been trying hard to be a “chill bride.” My family and myself are doing most of the planning. My cousin is letting us stay at her house in Antioch, TN, just outside in Nashville so we’re saving money before the bachelorette party and another cousin has a van and we’re all driving down together so we just have to split the cost of gas. None of us are exactly swimming in cash and I wanted to keep costs down as much as possible. I also told my bridesmaids, if there’s anything about my wedding stressing you out, let me know. I’m the only one that should be stressing and before this little scenario, I was feeling pretty good. Anyway, I found these perfect cocktail dresses at Anthropologie, inclusive sizing, great color and the holy Grail they were on sale. I made a deal with the bridesmaids. I buy the dresses if they covered any necessary alterations, everyone was happy. I gave everyone their dresses. Everyone looks fabulous and we’re all happy, who said planning a wedding was hard? Enter Roxy: back in December I saw a photo of Roxy at her work Christmas party wearing the bridesmaids dress. I’ll admit it bugged me. I wanted the big reveal at the wedding to feel special not like a rerun of an HR office mixer, but I bit my tongue because none of our mutual friends were there so I’m not going to stress myself out about something I felt like was kind of petty. The problem is we have a mutual friend getting married in June, one month before my wedding. A lot of my wedding guests will be at this wedding, and when I asked Roxy what she was wearing she casually said “Oh I’m just wearing the bridesmaids dress from your wedding. I look hot in it and it’s my favorite.” I paused . I told her I didn’t want her wear the bridesmaid uniform as a guest to a wedding filled with our mutual friends right before my big day Well, now Roxy thinks I’m being a bridezilla. She pointed out that I did say I wanted them to have a dress that they could wear again ( I meant after the wedding obviously) she then dropped the bombshell that she’s already worn it to several events. I might’ve snapped. I told her that since I bought the dress, I didn’t want her to wear it again until after my wedding she hit back in that since she paid for the alterations, she’s invested just as much money into the dress as I did which thanks to the sale might actually be true. My other bridesmaids are on my side, but Roxy thinks I’m overreacting because it’s just a dress. Am I the asshole for wanting the first time our friend group sees her in the dress to be when she’s standing at the altar with me. Mini update I guess - we’re meeting for dinner tomorrow to talk. She actually reached out to me, so fingers crossed 🤞 Update: She’s not wearing the dress to the June wedding and she even apologized. Yay! That’s the update. I’m going to go on to elaborate but if you don’t like ramblers, I would stop reading here. I like to ramble. Plus I had a few delicious cocktails at dinner tonight (it was happy hour) and tipsy me loves to go off topic and since there’s no one here telling me to stop and focus, who knows what’s going to come out. Im pretty sure this is going to be a long read. I’m using text to talk on my iPad because I hate typing on my iPad. I have a laptop but it’s old and every time I turn it on, it updates for what feels like a year, and by the time it lets me do what I need to do, I’ve lost interest or gone and did it on my phone or tablet, so it’s not worth it. Also I’m not going to apologize for grammar and spelling mistakes. Anyone who comes to Reddit posts and schools people on grammatical errors must get a kick out of it, so have fun, I’m sure this will be full of them. I get there, their and they’re confused sometimes. It makes my sister insane ands she loves to correct me when I do that. Sometimes when she’s feeling down, I do it on purpose just to give her a pick me up, so I get it. Back to the story, when I got there, she was already there, which is unusual because I’m usually the early one. I hate being late. I also hate when other people are late so I tend to get to things early because how can I judge other people for being late if I’m late? That’s no fun. But I was watching Ladies of London and the etiquette lady said that being early is also rude. Who knew. She actually said if you’re going to a dinner party, you should actually be about 15 minutes late so the hosts have time for unexpected things that come up. If you get there too early, they feel like they have to entertain you instead of wrapping up whatever they need to finish. I thought that was interesting and wanted to share. But let me get back to the update. I walk in, she stands up and gives me a hug and apologizes. So of course, I immediately start to tear up which makes her tear up and we’re just standing there hugging and crying in the middle of the restaurant. When we finally sit down, she tells me what’s going on. Apparently she’s been a little depressed for the past few months. She feels like she’s the only single person in our friend group, and I hadn’t thought about it but she kind of is. She said even our friend who is asexual has a partner. Again true. But it’s not like Roxy doesn’t date, and I’m not going to say she’s picky. She just feels like if she can tell that her and the guy aren’t compatible, there’s no reason to waste time. I’ll tell you why it hasn’t worked out with the last 3 guys she’s gone out. Guy number 1. Great guy, owned his own business, and I thought he was very handsome. But he’s not a pet guy. And if you do have a dog, he thinks it shouldn’t live in the house. It should be outside with a nice dog house. And the dog definitely shouldn’t get on the furniture. Her dog is her baby so he had to go. I agree, my fiancé knows to never make me choose between he and my dog. It would not be pretty. Guy number 2 hated his ex wife too much. She said he was always bringing her up but never in a good way. He seemed to always bring her up in conversations. Like they went to the movies, and he said his ex always said she loved movies, that’s why her and her girlfriends went so much, but it turns out she wasn’t really going to the movies, she was going out to cheat. Or they were going for a hike and she had her hair in a ponytail. He told her how cute she looked then said his ex wore ponytails all the time, unless she was meeting up with the guy she was cheating on him with, she always wore her hair down for him. She swears any topic of conversation, he could bring back to his ex cheating on him. She felt like he wasn’t over his ex wife so she cut it off. And guy number 3 just enjoyed fart humor too much for her liking. I don’t think I have to elaborate. My boo loves a good fart joke too, but I find it endearing. She thinks it’s immature. So anyway (I’m going to say that a lot, that’s how I get back on subject) she had been in a funk and I’m sure me talking about my upcoming wedding constantly didn’t help. She didn’t say that, but I do talk about it a lot. I mean look at me, I’m on Reddit talking about it now. So getting back to Roxy, she was in a funk. She picked up the dress from the seamstress and tried it on to see how it fit and she said she felt so pretty. She hadn’t felt pretty in a long time. Isn’t it funny how some outfits just make you feel good? I feel like that in my wedding dress, which I got at a consignment shop, can you believe it? I took it this seamstress and she worked magic on this dress. It was pretty before but now it’s beyond. Now you see what I did there, talking about my wedding again. I’m trying to do better. So anyway, when her holiday office party came along, she so didn’t want to go and procrastinated until the last minute to find something to wear. She went shopping and couldn’t find anything she liked. She even went to Anthropologie and couldn’t find anything in the store she liked and because she waited so long, didn’t have time to wait for an online order. And she knew it was wrong but she wore the dress and everyone loved it. She got so many compliments. Her work crush flirted and danced with her. Even the women there liked it. She hit it off with one of her work colleagues, “Aja” and they’ve hung out a lot since the party. They didn’t talk much before that night because they’re in completely different departments. But now they’ve gone to dinner several times and movies. They even hung out at Aja’s apartment and watched Bridgerton with their dogs who are also good friends now. She also feels like upper management noticed her too because since the office party, they’ve put her on bigger projects. So anyway, life’s been pretty good since she wore “the dress”. And this past weekend, when we were hanging out and I’m of course droning on and on about my wedding and then bring up what to wear to another’s friend’s wedding, that funk came back and she snapped a little bit. She said it really started off as a joke when she said she was going to wear the bridesmaids dress, but my reaction pissed her off. Looking back at my original post, I didn’t elaborate on my reaction. I was hopping mad yall. And I didn’t ask her not to wear it. I TOLD her she wasn’t wearing it because I paid for it. She said I made her feel like a child and I was her mother and she had to do what I told her to do because I said so. Therefore she acted like a child and threw a tantrum. She also hasn’t worn it anywhere else. Again she just said that to piss me off. After the party, she did take it to the dry cleaners, but it’s been hanging in her closet since. Even though I come off looking like an ass, I’m so happy. I even told her about the Reddit post. She thought it was hilarious. She said she knew I must have been mad because I gave her a Misfit name and not a Hologram name. It’s from a cartoon wet both lived add kids. She feels like Reddit was right since most people called her the asshole. I apologized to and told her the ESH people were right. I need to talk about this because none of my friends understand what I actually do when I try to explain it and my girlfriend thinks I'm running some kind of scam. So background. I'm 28, work full time as a marketing coordinator at a mid size agency. Not a creative role really, mostly spreadsheets and campaign tracking. Last year around September I was helping one of our clients source photos for their Instagram. They sell swimwear and wanted diverse model shots across different locations, skin tones, backgrounds, the whole thing. The quote from the photography studio came back at $4,200 for a two day shoot. Client said no. We ended up using the same three stock photos everyone else uses and the campaign looked generic as hell. That stuck with me because I knew AI image generation was getting crazy good. I'd been messing around with Midjourney for fun, making weird fantasy landscapes and stuff. But the problem with basic AI image generators for anything commercial involving people is that you can't get the same face twice. You generate a photo of a woman in a sundress on a beach, great. Now you need that same woman in a cafe, different outfit. Completely different person shows up. Doesn't work if you're trying to build any kind of consistent brand presence. I started googling around for tools that could keep a face consistent across multiple images and went down a rabbit hole for like two weeks. Tried a bunch of stuff. Played with some LoRA training on Stable Diffusion but I'm not technical enough and the results were hit or miss. Tested out several platforms, APOB, Synthesia, HeyGen, Artbreeder, a couple others I can't even remember. Each does slightly different things and honestly they all have tradeoffs. Eventually I cobbled together a workflow using a couple of these that actually produced usable stuff, the kind of output where you'd have to really zoom in and squint to tell it wasn't a real photo. The basic idea is simple. You set up a character's look once, save it as a model, and then reuse that same face across as many different scenes and outfits as you want. That's the thing that makes this viable as a service and not just a cool party trick. Because brands don't want one cool AI photo. They want 30 photos of the same "person" that they can drip out over a month on Instagram. I didn't plan to sell this as a service. What happened was I made a fake portfolio to test the concept. I created three AI characters, gave them names, generated about 15 photos each in different settings. Lifestyle stuff, coffee shops, hiking, urban backgrounds, gym, that kind of thing. I showed it to a friend who runs a small clothing brand and asked if he could tell they were AI. He said two of the three looked real and the third looked "maybe AI but honestly better than most influencer photos I get." He then asked if I could make some for his brand. I did 20 photos for him over a weekend, he used them on his Instagram, and his engagement actually went up because the content looked more polished than the iPhone shots his intern was taking. He paid me $150 which felt like a lot for maybe 3 hours of actual work. That's when I thought okay maybe there's a Fiverr gig here. I listed a gig in October called something like "I will create AI model photos for your brand" and priced it at $30 for 5 photos, $50 for 10, $100 for 25. Figured I'd get zero orders and move on. First two weeks, nothing. Adjusted my gig thumbnail three times. Then I got my first order from a guy running a skincare brand out of his apartment. He wanted photos of a woman in her 30s using his products in a bathroom setting. I set up the character, generated the scenes, did some light editing in Canva to add his product packaging into the shots, delivered in about 2 hours. He left a 5 star review and ordered again the next week. Then I hit my first real problem. My third client wanted a fitness model character and I spent a whole evening trying to get consistent results. The face kept shifting slightly between generations. Like the bone structure would change or the nose would look different in profile vs straight on. I ended up regenerating so many times that I burned through way more credits than I expected and had to upgrade to a paid plan earlier than I wanted. That order probably cost me more in time and tool credits than I actually charged. I almost refunded the client but eventually got a set of 10 that looked cohesive enough. That experience taught me that not every character concept works equally well. Some faces just generate more consistently than others and I still don't fully understand why. I've learned to do a test batch of 5 or 6 images in different angles before I commit to a character for a client. If the face isn't holding steady, I tweak the setup until it does or I start over with a different base. By December I had 14 completed orders. The thing that surprised me is who was buying. I expected like dropshippers and sketchy supplement brands. Instead I got: A yoga studio in Austin that wanted a consistent "brand ambassador" for their social media but couldn't afford a real one. They order monthly now. A guy selling handmade candles who wanted lifestyle photos but didn't want to hire models or use his own face. A pet food company that wanted a "pet parent" character holding their products in different home settings. A language learning app that needed a virtual tutor character for their TikTok content. This one was interesting because they also wanted short video clips where the character appeared to be speaking in different languages. Took me longer to figure out than the photo work and honestly the first batch looked rough. The mouth movement was slightly off sync and the client asked for revisions. Second attempt was better and they've reordered three times now, but video is definitely harder to get right than stills. Here's the actual workflow now that I've got it somewhat dialed in: Client sends me a brief. Usually something like "25 year old woman, athletic build, for a fitness brand. Need 10 photos in gym settings, outdoor running, and post workout lifestyle." I set up the character's appearance and save it. This used to take me over an hour when I was learning but now it's more like 20 to 30 minutes including the test batch to make sure the face holds. I generate the photos by describing each scene. I've built up a doc with scene templates that I know tend to produce good results so I'm not starting from scratch every time. I just swap out details per client. I generate more images than I need because not every output is usable. Weird hands, lighting that doesn't match, uncanny expressions. I've gotten better at writing descriptions that minimize these issues but it still happens. Early on I was throwing away more than half my generations. Now it's maybe a third, sometimes less. Quick edit pass in Canva or Photoshop if needed. Sometimes I composite a product into the shot or adjust colors to match the client's brand palette. Deliver on Fiverr. Total active time per order is usually 45 minutes to maybe an hour and a half for a 10 photo batch depending on how cooperative the AI is being that day. The renders themselves take time but I'm not sitting there watching them. Cost wise I want to be transparent because I see a lot of side hustle posts that conveniently forget to mention expenses. I'm paying about $30/month for the AI tools on paid plans because the free tiers don't give you enough credits to fulfill multiple client orders per week. Fiverr takes 20% of every order. And I spend maybe $12/month on Canva Pro which I'd probably have anyway. So my actual margins are lower than the gross numbers suggest. On a $50 order I'm really netting about $35 after Fiverr's cut, and then subtract a proportional share of the tool costs. It's still very good for the time invested but it's not pure profit like some people might assume. The part that makes this increasingly passive is the repeat clients. I now have 6 clients who order at least once a month. Their character models are already saved. I know their brand style. A reorder takes me maybe 30 minutes of actual work because I'm not figuring anything out, just generating new scenes with an existing saved character. Some honest stuff about what sucks: Fiverr fees are brutal. I've started moving repeat clients to direct payment but new clients still come through the platform and that 20% hurts on smaller orders. Revision requests can be painful. One client wanted me to make the character look "more confident but also approachable but also mysterious." I've learned to offer one round of revisions and be very specific upfront about what I can and can't change after delivery. I had one order in January where I completely botched it. The client wanted photos in a specific art deco interior style and no matter what I described, the backgrounds kept coming out looking like a generic hotel lobby. I spent three hours trying different approaches, eventually delivered something the client said was "fine I guess" and got a 3 star review. That one stung and it dragged my average rating down for weeks. The ethical thing comes up sometimes. I had one potential client who wanted me to create a fake influencer to promote a weight loss supplement and pretend it was a real person endorsing it. I said no. My gig description now explicitly says the content is AI generated and I recommend clients disclose that. Most of them do because honestly it's becoming a selling point, "look at our cool AI brand ambassador" is a marketing angle in itself now. But I know not everyone in this space is upfront about it and that's a real concern. Also the quality gap between what AI can do and what a real photographer can do is still real. For high end fashion brands or anything that needs to be truly photorealistic at full resolution, this isn't there yet. But for Instagram posts, TikTok content, small brand social media, email marketing images? It's more than good enough and it's a fraction of the cost of a real shoot. Monthly breakdown for the boring numbers people: October: $120 (4 orders, mostly figuring things out) November: $230 (6 orders, lost one client who wasn't happy with quality) December: $435 (11 orders, holiday marketing rush helped a lot) January: $410 (9 orders, slight dip after the holidays which I expected) February: $710 (15 orders including three video batches which pay more) March so far: $200 (5 orders, month is still early) Total since starting: roughly $2,105 over 5 months. Minus maybe $150 in tool subscriptions over that period and Fiverr's cut which is already reflected in the numbers above. Average time commitment is maybe 5 hours a week, trending down as I get faster and have more repeat clients. I'm not quitting my day job over this. I tried dropshipping in 2023 and lost $800. I tried starting a blog and made $12 in AdSense over 6 months. This actually works because there's a clear value proposition: brands need visual content, real content with real models is expensive, and AI has gotten good enough that small brands genuinely can't tell the difference at Instagram resolution. Still feels weird telling people I make fake people for a living on the side. I know there is a lot of discussion right now about GTA6, the Nintendo Switch 2, the prices of skins in games like League of Legends, etc. There's a whole lot of discussion about how these prices are absurd, are going to alienate the playerbase, etc. Something that really isn't being given proper attention is that the justification for why these price hikes need to happen are directly in contrast to the reality of the gaming industry. Just in the past week, I've seen memes pointing out how "games haven't kept their pricing in line with inflation", while failing to account that many games now include a base price, microtransactions, season passes, DLC packs, etc. We recently had the head of Saber Interactive go on the record, bragging about how their strategy is to "cut costs" and outsource development to emergent regions as a means of bolstering profits. And even though he is no longer there, I think everyone recalls when John Riccitiello of Unity had once suggested charging gamers for the ability to reload their weapons. We're now even hearing about how "GTA6 is going to kill a lot of studios and publishers" making the rounds What seems to be slipping under the radar is that, despite posting record profits, developers have been getting laid off for nearly 2 years now. It was attributed to the "COVID hangover" at first, then it came down to "inflated development costs", now we're circling back to "games haven't kept up with inflation", and I expect (undoubtedly) that we'll soon see the newly-minted tariffs as a reason why the business needs to raise prices. There doesn't seem to be any discussion about the job losses that already took place. There doesn't seem to be any discussion about how the very same companies crying foul about development costs have already moved their operations overseas as a means of cutting costs. These price hikes have nothing to do with the business being unsustainable, and everything to do with corporate greed. Companies don't get to outsource their operations to Poland, Brasil, China, Vietnam, Turkey, the Phillipines, and outsource providers and also complain that they aren't making enough money. These same companies are actively trying to cut headcounts and incorporate tools that replace even more humans, such as Activision starting to include generative AI to build assets, or using deceptive contract language to replace voice actors with AI generated lines. Whole divisions of game development have been outsourced to 3rd party providers, who pocket anywhere between 20-60% of the contract's value while underpaying contractors who don't have any benefits or protections; companies like Keywords and Pole to Win now, almost assuredly, do the majority of testing for your games. They charge the biggest players in the field full price salaries, while subcontracting the work to people for $10/hr. When developers tried to unionize, they were already being let go. Unionization efforts are effectively failing across the industry. If these proposed price hikes went to ensuring development teams were being maintained, staying together, promoting longevity and sequels and the opportunity to create more new titles, I think gamers would consider it more tolerable; but that isn't happening. Studios are cutting costs, firing staff, and paying out even bigger bonuses to a handful of C-suite members. C-Suite staff do not make video games. People like Matt Karch, a person wealthy enough to own a private jet, are doing press tours telling everyone how expensive game development is while his company pays people a fraction of what they would have earned 5 years ago. These price hikes aren't going to ensure that developers and studios can build new titles freely; they're going to ensure that the financial class which has actively been ruining this industry for a decade gets to reap even bigger rewards off the backs of consumers. All while they whimper and whine about how difficult, how expensive, how unsustainable game development has become. EDIT:I thought I would add this, after commenting it in response to another user's reply. Keep in mind that many developers are already: using a pre-existing Engine to expedite game development using AI to generate assets (art, audio, V/O, missions/narrative design) using outsourced shops to control quality and handle player support issues using volunteers to moderate social media/manage communities using content creators for marketing/pushing product sales in a specific instance, using players to create free content for the game, as noted in the case of Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite Creative/UEFN where modders work for free and the parent company takes a share of any profits generated submitted by /u/CyberSmith31337 to r/gaming [link] [comments]
