Hey all, I’m working in InfoSec at a small company and looking to level up incident response skills — both for myself and my small team. Wanted to ask: What certs are actually worth it for incident response? Good options I can also send my team (2–5 people) to? We’ve already got the basics covered (ISO 27001, SOC 2, etc.), so now trying to get better at real-world stuff like handling incidents, investigations, ransomware scenarios, etc. Would really appreciate recommendations based on what you’ve personally taken — not just what looks good on paper. I recently started a new position as an Incident Responder. Our stack is Microsoft Sentinel (SIEM), ADX Explorer, and Cybereason (EDR). As someone new to the role, I try to follow the playbooks documented in Confluence as closely as possible. But honestly… it still doesn’t feel like enough. When I receive a ticket, I often feel the gap in experience. The playbooks help, but real incidents rarely follow them perfectly. There are always small deviations, subtle details, edge cases things you don’t even realize are important until you’ve seen them before. And that’s where I struggle. Even if I complete the investigation, there’s always that lingering question: “Is my analysis solid? Did I miss something?” So I end up double-checking with my senior colleagues almost every time. They’re supportive but I don’t want to rely on them forever. At some point, I need to trust my own judgment. I don’t think this is something you gain just by reading more documentation. It feels like something deeper pattern recognition, intuition, experience. So my question to the community is: How did you actually improve your incident response skills? Next week I am starting a new position as an Incident response engineer and I am gathering some ideas to bring up and look into as soon as possible. This is my first more serious position in the cybersecurity field and the team I am joining is being created at the moment. I am basically the first one for now as I know. Since the new place is working with a MSSP and I will be their contact point I thought that it might be a good idea to do some kind of assessment of their processes and overall quality of work. My first job in the field was for an MSSP and even though we gave it our all they way it worked made it hard to deliver quality results. I would also want to go over existing SOPs and incident response plan with a focus on how other teams are aware, involved and ready to cooperate when needed. Other than that I would also look into how firewall changes are done and how involved the security team is. Any other ideas that might help me have a strong start and work towards a more secure environment? To be honest I have never had an actual incident in my short career so far so I am quite nervous how I would deal with a potentially real threat. That is why I want to prepare as much as possible. Well that was fun... got walked out friday after completely botching a p0 incident 2am alert comes in, payment processing down. im oncall so my problem. spent 20 minutes trying to wake people up instead of just following escalation. nobody answered obviously database connection pool was maxed but we had zero visibility into why. Spent an hour randomly restarting stuff while our biggest client lost thousands per minute. ceo found out from customer email not us which was awkward turns out it was a memory leak from a deploy 3 days ago. couldve caught it with proper monitoring but "thats not in the budget" according to management 4 hours to fix something that shouldve taken 20 minutes. now im job hunting and every company has the same broken incident response shouldve pushed for better tooling instead of accepting that chaos was normal i guess submitted by /u/GroundOld5635 to r/sysadmin [link] [comments]

The first Turn at Spa-Francorchamps, also named La Source, has seen many incidents through the years. In 2012 there was Grosjean that even got a race ban after colliding with Hamilton. In 2016 there was Vettel, Raikkonen and Verstappen. In 2018 there was Hulkenberg braking too late and colliding with Alonso, with Bottas also braking too late and colliding with Sirotkin. After that in 2019 it was again between Verstappen and Raikkonen, and in 2023 it was Piastri and Sainz. Most of those incidents involve someone braking too late with some drivers more at fault than others, and some of the incidents are very similar, but with very different responses from the community. Those 3 incidents that are similar, are the interesting ones to me. With most of them thinking Verstappen should not have gone for the move. I would like you to note how much alongside Verstappen already is, way before any turning in is happening. To note, Martin Brundle thought this accident was solely on Verstappen in the replay. Again, what did the community think of this accident? Verstappen crashes out of the race | 2019 Belgian Grand Prix - Race Discussion | 2016 Spa vs 2019 Spa | Max crashes with Kimi 2019 A lot of people arguing, between racing incident and Verstappen at fault. With really aggressive discussions and a lot of people blaming Verstappen on the collision but seeing that it could be a racing incident. Note that nobody was blaming Raikkonen for this incident. To avoid this Sainz is braking hard and is swerving to his right. Sainz, to avoid running into Hamilton, is steering to his right. While steering the brake forces are not going straight trough the tire, which causes a short lock up, until his steering is straight again. Race start analysis - Piastri squeezed into the wall The moment of contact Sainz's insistence Piastri caused Spa clash Not what we wanted today (Carlos Sainz) ​ Personally, while writing I didn't want to inject my opinion in either of the crashes, just wanted to make observations. I also will not give any completing statement of who I think was at fault. I just found it interesting how the community response between all three of the incidents were so different. With Sainz probably getting the most blame for an incident of all the examples, with also a lot of the comments being wrong about how the incident happened.
