I'm looking to build a Faraday cage for my inverter generator, which is pretty large. My idea is to weld some thin sheet steel together and tape the seems with conductive tape then line the inside with 3/4" plywood. Would this be enough? The lid I'm still working on so any suggestions would be welcome, so far I was imagining a cap style with latches all around and conductive foam to seal. Any recommendations on conductive foam you've used with success? The goal was to develop a low-cost 6-DOF robotic arm platform that lets me build foundational robotics and ROS 2 skills on real hardware instead of only simulation. I wanted a system where I could explore the entire robotics stack, including embedded firmware and motor control all the way up to motion planning and digital-twin simulation. It has also been a great opportunity to experiment with custom and unconventional joint and reducer designs that I haven’t seen implemented on any robotics platforms. Mechanical Architecture: Each joint section was designed and built independently, and later connected using clamped carbon fiber tubes. This modularity allows each joint to be iterated on separately, while the tube lengths can be swapped to change the arm’s reach or payload capacity accordingly. Joint & Reducer Designs: The base joint uses a traditional planetary gearbox. While the shoulder and elbow joints use a split-ring planetary gearbox, by utilizing two slightly offset ring gears driven by a common set of compound planets, this design provides an incredibly high torque density in a compact form factor. Which is what allowed me to achieve a 70:1 and 40:1 gear reduction respectively, while keeping a large contact area to minimize stress between the plastic gears, all without the bulk or backlash of a multi-stage system. Because this gearbox configuration does not provide an accessible output shaft for a conventional encoder, I implemented a custom sensing approach: alternating polarity magnets were mounted around the output ring gear, and a magnetic encoder is positioned perpendicular to the axis with an offset, allowing it to perceive the alternating magnetic fields as a spinning radially magnetized magnet. The spherical wrist uses an inverted belt differential with a custom bearing track to maintain consistent pressure on the belt to prevent skipping. All three wrist motors are mounted behind the elbow joint so they act as a counterweight, reducing inertia at the wrist and improving dynamic performance. Embedded Control & Firmware: The robot is controlled by a STM32 microcontroller, where I developed custom firmware in C to manage SPI communication with 6 daisy-chained encoders, CAN bus communication with a Raspberry Pi, PID loops and step generation for motor control, and a state management safety system. Higher-level planning will run on a Raspberry Pi using ROS 2, where the arm will interface with MoveIt for motion planning and simulation; this is still under development. Hello, I had installed adani solar panels(5kw) along with a solis inverter(8kw) on 28 april2025. The upfront cost was 2.82L out of which 78k was reimbursed through govt. Subsidy. Now the most important thing that no YT video or no reddit post covered while I was doing my research for solar panels was that 1 unit generated through solar =/= 1unit of electricity used, what it means is. 1 unit in my state is chargeable at approx 7.8 while 1 unit of electricity that your solar generates will be subsidized at 3.9 per unit. For eg. You used 500 units in a month & your solar produced 900 units in that same month, you bill won't be 0. It will be (5007.8)-(9003.9)=390rupees. But the good thing is these units are carry forwarded to next month i.e. if you bill is at -1090 you bill for this month will be 1090-390= -800 rupees. Now let's calculate break even for me & BE in best case scenario. Before solar my electricity bill was 30k/per year so my BE will be 2.04L/30k=6.8years Best case scenario you have an electric car & you use all the units generated from the solar plant. My 5kw solar plant has generated 7800units in 9.5months according to the app but the solar generation printed on electricity bill is around 7200units(yes, govt decreases the units lost in transmission or something), so an avg of 750+units per month. Your breakeven time will be 5years & 8months. Lastly if you take away the subsidy of 78k your BE time in my case jumps up to 9.4yrs & in best case scenario it jumps to 7yr 10months. Conclusion: if you're installing solar just for monetary gains it won't make much sense since that 2.82L in sip will push the BE period even further, but we are a country that does not produce enough electricity to sustain ourselves so if you want power cuts to not happen in India, get solar panels and produce your own electricity. submitted by /u/banned-commentar to r/Frugal_Ind [link] [comments]

I’ve always loved classic trucks, but the reality is that many of them end up parked, slowly deteriorating, or only driven occasionally. I started wondering if there was another path where these trucks could stay on the road and actually be used regularly. My background is a bit unusual for this space — I’m a professor of nanoscience by training — but I’ve always been drawn to mechanical systems and old vehicles. I’m a lifelong car nerd, constantly buying, selling, tracking cars and trucks and nursing my addiction. I grew up in rural Delmarva in a Ford truck family and I’ve always thought the sixth-generation F-series trucks are some of the most charismatic pickups ever built. Project 1 is a 1977 Ford F150 SuperCab running a Tesla drive unit and a custom ~100 kWh battery pack built from Tesla modules. The goal wasn’t to erase what makes the truck special, but to preserve the driving feel and capability while modernizing the drivetrain. Here are a few things that surprised me during the process. Lessons learned. Classic American trucks are incredibly builder-friendly platforms. If you enjoy working with systems, older vehicles are a joy. Everything is laid out logically and accessibly — a wire starts here, powers these components, and ends here. Compared to modern vehicles (post-late 80’s), the simplicity is refreshing. Older trucks have packaging advantages modern vehicles don’t. Large engine bays and simple ladder frames give you far more flexibility for packaging motors, controllers, and batteries than most modern vehicles. Integrated drive units are extremely attractive for conversions. For this build I used a Tesla SDU tuned to roughly mimic the original power and torque characteristics of the truck. I’ve also designed systems around Tesla LDU units and Cascadia Motion iM-series motors. Motors that integrate the inverter simplify packaging and reduce system complexity significantly. Having integrated differentials reduces parasitic loss of energy and frees up space that the old drivetrain used to occupy. Battery and switch packaging is a learning process. The truck uses a custom ~100 kWh pack composed of Tesla modules with a Dilithium BMS and a house-built contactor box. There are three battery enclosures wired in series: the main pack sits in the engine bay and replaces the original V8 to within about 30 lbs, and two additional packs run along the transmission tunnel and where the driveshaft used to be. My next builds may not use an identical system, but designing one like this from the ground up will teach you a lot and make you a much more seasoned wirer in every respect. From crimps, to harness design, to fusing, to bus bar design and on and on, the lessons learned by building a custom traction pack and control system aren’t something you can learn from books or YouTube. Rear drivetrain design matters more than people realize. Instead of keeping the transmission and driveshaft, I designed a fully custom rear assembly that mounts the motor between the rear wheels. The setup uses a De Dion axle with custom hub boxes, CV joints, and a bespoke Wilwood brake system. You can see this set up in the picture of the rear brake kit. This layout lets the truck maintain unsprung mass similar to the original and results in very natural road manners by keeping the weight the same as it was before the conversion, and in the same place it was before the conversion. In my opinion, there’s no other way to EV convert a vintage pickup. By designing a new solid rear axle mounted to the original leafs, the truck drives like a truck and has an unchanged payload. Range is better than many people expect. The truck averages roughly 2.3–3 miles per kWh, which gives a practical real-world range of around 220 miles while keeping the battery within healthy voltage limits. If I started over, I’d finish all chassis work first. I would complete every custom chassis modification before installing any EV components. Wiring and battery integration ended up being relatively straightforward. Chassis design and fabrication require far more focus and iteration to get right. Getting the brake kit dialed in was the hardest part of the build. You need brakes, you need them to work, and if you’re designing the brakes you better damn well get it right. Everything else seems trivial in retrospect compared to the braking system. I ended up having axles spinning on my motor a year before I could take my first drive. My philosophy with these builds isn’t about gas vs electric. It’s about offering another option to keep great trucks on the road for decades instead of watching them slowly disappear or become garage queens. What really struck me the first time I took this truck for a spin was just how immensely calming it is to drive. Silent, smooth, floaty and simple. There’s no way to replace the rumble of a V8 but, on the other side of the coin, a V8 can’t replace the incredible Zen that flows from this truck. Also, it’s fast. I’m in this for the long haul. I’m looking at picking up a Champion 4500W dual fuel inverter generator for camping and backup power. I already own two larger Champion generators, but I want a quieter inverter model. I’m considering the Allstate 3-year protection plan and had a few questions. The plan mentions repair, replacement, or refund. My concern is that I live over 5 hours from the nearest authorized repair facility. In that case: Do they arrange shipping both ways if repair is required? Or do they typically just send a replacement unit? Has anyone actually gone through a claim process on one of these? I run premium fuel, use synthetic oil, and keep maintenance records. I just want to make sure if something major fails, I’m not stuck driving 12 hours round trip. Hello - I am looking into an inverter generator to pair with my solar + battery backup. Standard 50 amp generator inlet port + interlock switch for manual use if needed. I’ve attached a picture of the specs of my 5 ton heat pump. I know the LRA is also of concern but am planning on getting a soft start installed. I know for a fact my heat pump doesn’t use anywhere near that RLA + FLA when running bc I already have energy monitoring. So I’ve monitored this for a long time in the winter and summer and at most it use 5,000 watts when running at the worst outside temperatures. The point I am trying to make is it seems the LRA, RLA, and FLA is the theoretical maximum and you don’t use anywhere near that in reality. I have been looking into getting something bigger to power a whole house and then came across those 5000 super quite inverter generators like predator and Champion and so on. My question is for the big non inverter generators, how do people use those to power a whole house and power sensitive devices? My wife is concerned about an extended power outage and no heat. I have a 2350W inverter generator that I assume I can use to power our furnace if necessary. Flip off breaker for furnace Cut off the end of my 12awg extension cord Open the furnace cover and disconnect hot, neutral, and ground from the house wiring Connect hot, neutral, and ground from my extension cord and close furnace cover. Plug extension cord into generator sitting outside the house Start things up and enjoy heat from the furnace. Any issues with this plan in a situation of last resort? I assume my generator doesn't have enough power and has an internal breaker anyway if the furnace starts drawing more than the extension cord could handle, but a gas furnace shouldn't pull more than a few hundred watts.
