My favourite special occasion restaurant in west London is the River Cafe: https://www.rivercafe.co.uk/ Amazing Italian food, right on the river near Hammersmith. Definitely book in advance if you want to go. I'm not sure how they cater to vegans, would be the only issue. They might be able to make some dishes vegan?

Authentic Italian food ?!
Hi everyone! So my Italian father passed away 11 years ago this month and I’m looking to have a nice dinner in his memory on that date. Been years since I’ve eaten Italian in Boston, I’m wondering where the most authentic food can be found !? Diverse menus are appreciated ! Not fusion, but maybe some traditional items beyond what you typically see at an Italian restaurant. Preferably spots that take reservations. Thanks so much for helping! submitted by /u/Material-Ask1776 to r/boston [link] [comments]

Italian food is romanticized but in reality it’s just okay
I recently travelled to Italy with my girlfriend for around a week to a small town in the Calabrian region, I figured a sea side town would be amazing and the location would fit our student budgets. I went into this trip hyped about Italian food and wanted to see why it kept getting ranked as the top cuisines online. My final verdict, it’s okay? Besides the gelato and pastries their savoury dishes never really hit the note I was expecting; honestly boring. Seafood was much more expensive than I expected despite us being in a small seaside town, they either cooked it in a tomato based sauce or literally just salt and lemon. I tried to avoid only sticking to pizza and pasta but on a budget those are almost your only options, besides a panini I guess? While I enjoy Italian food in casual contexts like pizza or bolognese, the global hype around it feels overblown and pretentious. Many praised dishes, like carbonara or rigatoni with tomato sauce, are simple to the point of being underwhelming; more like side dishes than mains that don’t justify their price or reputation. The frequent defenses of the cuisine (“you went to tourist traps,” or “you’re used to too much spice”) come off as lazy and subtly condescending, dismissing valid critique. I respect the accessibility of Italian food, but its repetitive simplicity and reliance on “fresh ingredients” don't automatically make it superior to cuisines that offer more depth, technique, and complexity. I went into this trip ready to be mind blown and ended up a lot more broke and bummed than I expected. I cannot believe they get away with charging 15€ for some of the most boring pasta with literal slivers of meat; won’t even offer you extra Parmesan on the side. I’ve been to Greece before and thought Italy would hit the same, it really did not. Let me clarify I’m not even saying I don’t like Italian food, I just think it has no business being marketed as the pinnacle of cuisine. ** Edit: This blew up a lot more than I expected, I have gotten a lot of criticism for this opinion so it was definitely unpopular! I want to kind of summarize and respond to most of the arguments I’ve seen in the comments. It’s frustrating when people dismiss my underwhelming experience with Italian food by saying I didn’t spend enough, especially when Italian cuisine is so often praised for its peasant roots and simplicity. If the food truly came from a tradition of making the most out of little, then why does it now require fine-dining prices to be enjoyable? Meanwhile, countries like Vietnam, India, and Mexico endured colonization, famine, and extreme poverty; and yet still managed to create deeply flavourful cuisines that transform humble ingredients through ingenuity, spice, and layered techniques. These cultures didn’t reduce “common folk food” to something bland or minimal. They elevated it into something powerful and memorable. If Italian food can’t do the same without luxury ingredients or a nice setting, then maybe it’s not the gold standard it claims to be. People keep saying I must’ve only eaten in tourist traps, as if that excuses my underwhelming experience, but that simply isn’t true. I went out of my way to go to Scalea which is a very small town. The regional cuisine everyone is emphasizing was a N’duja sausage and a different shape of pasta, wow, riveting. Countries like China are infinitely more regional yet don’t need it as a deflection. Now even in Rome (we had our flight back there) I tried to research and visit a small, highly rated local pasta spot for carbonara, and I still walked away thinking, “That was just okay.” If the best you can say about a world-famous dish like carbonara is that I must have gone to the wrong shop, or that I didn’t spend enough, then the whole argument collapses. It’s no longer about the food, it’s about deflecting any critique by blaming the traveler for not being rich, connected, or “local” enough. Meanwhile, in countries like Vietnam, Mexico, or Greece, I can walk into a humble market stall or roadside eatery with zero research and walk out having eaten something bold, soulful, and unforgettable, because those cuisines don’t hide behind gatekeeping or price tags. If Italian food only delivers when every variable is perfect, maybe it’s time to admit that its reputation is being held up more by nostalgia and romanticism than by universal flavor or consistency. submitted by /u/Revolutionary_Cake17 to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Italian food in Italy is mostly very mediocre
Now I know what you’re going to say, that’s there’s this great restaurant in this little village where a grandma makes the best food you’ve ever had. I’ve travelled in Italy extensively and my conclusion is that Italian food is mostly very mediocre. Not bad, just nothing special. Doesn’t hold a candle to other Mediterranean cuisines like Lebanese or Greek. I’d go as far to say that American Italian food is tastier. American Italian food goes a little overboard with the bread and cheese and meat but it’s more flavorful than Italian food as a whole. submitted by /u/ColCrockett to r/The10thDentist [link] [comments]

AITA for asking my husband’s Italian friend to cook for herself, and told her I would not eat her food?
My husband’s friend flew in from Bellagio, Italy a week ago, and, as much as I tried, I could not make her happy with any type of home cook, or even restaurants in Melbourne! Took her out to restaurants, we wanted to introduce her to the variety of food we have! No, no sushi, no Thai food, no Chinese, because Italian food is the best! We went out for Italian 3 days in a row! She complained about pasta, about cheese, anything is just not as good as in …….Italy She complained about the wine not tasty enough! she got mad when I dared to order a cappuccino at 4pm, because “we don’t drink cappuccino after 12pm” (I was just like:”yeah, I drink wth I want at the time I want). Coffee was either too burn, or not hot enough. We went to Coles to do some shopping, straight away complained about no authentic Italian pastas, and in the middle of the isle, decided to teach me how properly say the name of each pasta. We decided to cook at home today, mind you, I am Asian, I love my spices and I love flavourful dishes! I decided to cook what I know best, did not think it would be a bad idea. She came, and the first thing she said was, your house smell bad (fish sauce), and she proceeded to ignore my dish and asked my husband to take her out for some lasagna! When she got back she told me I should learn how to cook Italian dishes, because it is not good for my husband to always eat fusion food, online recipes are just stupid for straying away from the root (wtf?) I was so mad and did not mince words, I told her how arrogant and obnoxious to think Italian food are the best, told her Italian are not the best, and we would not take her out for any Italian meals, she could go shopping for herself, cooked it, and enjoyed alone, sorry but the ingredients would not be….as good as in….. Italy, but she was in another country, be grateful for what she could find! She cried and decided to leave early. My husband tried to tell me that she is set in her way, she does not travel that much all her life. 60 years, this is the second time she travels out of the country, the last time was to Germany, and it was well over 25 years ago! He told me maybe I should just say sorry to her just to smoother the situation. I refused, told him if she cannot live without her Italian heritage for just a few weeks, there is no point for me to convince her to like me anyway! So AITA? submitted by /u/LegElectrical9214 to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

If you had to take an Italian out to dinner for Italian food in Sacramento, where would you go?
Either in Sacramento or around the area. Also... if you wanted to plan a whole day together (as a couple in the 40s/50s age range), where would you go? Note: they just got back from visiting Italy, and they have a more expensive taste for authentic food. They enjoy art, and live music. :) thanks for the advice EDIT: thank you for the great ideas, but my guests don't want anything that isn't an Italian suggestion. So, if your idea is to go get them something that isn't Italian.. It's not a suggestion I'm looking for. They swear a place in Oakland is better than the food in Italy itself, and I'm trying to find someone who feels that way about a place in Sacramento or nearby. Thanks again. Edit Edit: Turns out, Spaghetti Factory is the highest rated for authentic Italian cuisine by Italians and for Italians!!! :) Jokes aside - I didn't expect this to get so much feedback, I appreciate the advice and look forward to trying some of these! submitted by /u/NoVeterinarian115 to r/Sacramento [link] [comments]

Italian food culture can go fuck itself.
The focal point of this is Italian food culture, but it applies to any and all food cultures which desperately push arbitrary rules onto people. This includes some forms of traditional Japanese cuisine, which can also go fuck itself. I get the importance of culture. I get that there are things which have been carried forth in many cultures for generations for a very good reason. But what I will never get, is this idea of pushing for your food to not only be consumed a specific way, but to only be consumed with specific utensils? Specific drinks served only a specific way? Some may say "This is to maximise the quality of the food" to which I can proudly say get fucked. I'll fucking snap the spaghetti in half if I damn well please, I'll put fucking pineapple on pizza, ice in my wine, hell I don't even like wine! But I'll drink it with ice if some Italian tells me not to. I'll eat with whatever utensil I want, and whatever toppings I want. YOUR. FOOD. IS. NOT. THAT. SPECIAL. Your espresso just tastes just burnt coffee. Your pastas barely have the ingredients variety of a seafood restaurant. What you think Ravioli is special? Chinese dumplings are just as tasty. Your fucking GELATO. NORMAL ICE CREAM IS FUCKING BETTER. We've all been tricked into thinking it's fancier because it had a fucking italian name, but Gelato is just icecream made with milk rather than cream, which results in a lighter texture. I LOVE traditional cream-based icecream, I love how thick and lush it tastes, and yet every icecreamery is slowly being replaced by a fucking gelato place. An Italian patissery opened in a suburb in town. All the local Italians were praising how this is a proper Italian Patisseria! And it tasted mid as fuck. The coffee was fucking atrocious, I've had break ups less bitter than that small container of black death. And the Canoli was fucking boring. It wasn't even necessarily bad, it was just fucking dull. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I hate Italian food. Why would I? It's perfectly fine, even if I may shit on parts of it. But it's not special, not by a long shot. Not to the point where you should be applying all these arbitrary rules on how to eat it. There are rules to eating certain foods because they're special, you can't fake that process by forcing rules for certain food to make it seem special. Bonus: Don't act like your recipe is great just because it came from your fucking Grear Grandmamma. For all I know she could have been a truly fucking awful cook. Once again, your food is not special. Kust enjoy it however the fuck you want. submitted by /u/mister_gonuts to r/Rants [link] [comments]

Italian food is quite overrated
I'm currently in Italy and I am finding myself so underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong everything is nice but like, it's just nice. It's not really stand out amazing at all. Everyone I'm on holiday with is gushing that it's the best food in the world, how cool it is that were somewhere known for amazing food etc etc and I just feel like, underwhelmed. To me this doesn't really hold a candle to say, Thai, Carribbean or even french. If anyone can recommend something to change my mind I would be eternally grateful. Ideally no mushrooms, pork or scallops is the only criteria really. I want to go home after this trip telling everyone how amazing the food is but so far that isn't really happening for me. submitted by /u/coinsntings to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Italian food is boring and bad
Italian food sucks. It’s boring and bland and I will never understand why anyone craves it ever. I’ve been told “it’s just because you live in the US, in Italy it’s way different!” Been to Italy, and can confirm it’s not. Richer maybe, but half the food consists of basically just tomatoes, pastry/pasta, and cheese. The desserts blow as well. Cannolis are disgusting, Panna cotta is meh, and zeppoles are boring just to name the most common ones. It’s only saving graces are the occasional slice of pizza or tiramisu, and if you only like those two things you don’t like Italian food, you just like two Italian dishes. submitted by /u/made_in_quarantine to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Italians should STFU about their precious cuisine
It was funny for a short while, but the joke is old. Yes, Italians, everyone else bastardizes your cuisine. Get over it. It doesn't benefit anyone to be continually reminded that they are using the wrong kind of smoked pork product or hard cheese according to Il cucchiaio d'argento. We know that our versions of pizza and pasta are not true to the standards of Italian cuisine. We just don't care. And that's not because we don't care about food, it's because we are not stuck in some rigid way of thinking. If someone claims pizza is American or "spaghetti Bolognese" is Italian, fair enough, these people can be corrected, but this needs to go alongside a recognition that Italian styles of food have become internationalised and spawned a great variety of dishes that, while not truly Italian, can nonetheless be good. You are not protecting your food by complaining that I put fennel in my soffritto and cream in my carbonara, you're just being a whiny bitch. Italian food is absolutely wonderful for experimenting with. Italians should unbutton their collars a bit and open their minds to my mum's chicken risotto made with long-grain rice and raisins. It's delicious! submitted by /u/Parapolikala to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]
