WTF happened to Italy?!
Italy feels different lately… and not really in a good way. I’m an Italian that lived abroad for 15 years. I came back here 3 years ago and honestly, I’ve started asking myself the same thing a lot of people are thinking: what changed? Post-COVID travel came back hard. Prices shot up, Airbnbs took over whole areas, and places like Rome, Florence, and Venice feel more like attractions than actual cities people live in. It’s getting harder to find anything that feels real. You see it everywhere. Locals getting priced out, “tours” turning into conveyor belts, golf carts and audio guides replacing actual human connection. Even simple things… coffee prices doubled, churches that used to be free now ticketed, neighborhoods that look built for Instagram instead of everyday life. And locals are not just watching quietly. New tourist taxes, restrictions on short-term rentals, protests… especially in Venice and Florence. There’s definitely some pushback happening. That said, it’s not all lost. Italy is still incredible. The food, the history, the small moments… they’re still there. Just not always where you expect them anymore. If you’re trying to experience a more genuine side of it, just ask here. Plenty of people can point you in the right direction. submitted by /u/QUA-ItalianTravel to r/ItalyTravelAdvice [link] [comments]

Italy's Abandoned Winter Olympic Sites from 2006
While everyone's watching the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, we went to the part nobody broadcasts: the abandoned venues that were left behind. These photos are from two abandoned sites of Torino 2006: Cesana Pariol (ice track for bobsleigh, luge & skeleton), and Pragelato (the ski jump stadium). What shocked us: parts of it are still in surprisingly good shape, even after nearly 20 years. And yet, they didn't reuse these sites. Why has Italy (especially southern Italy) become so anti Zionist recently? As someone with Italian ancestry I find this disappointing.
I don’t know if this is the right subreddit but I wanted to get the opinion of Jews. I am somewhat confused by this shift and didn’t expect to see such massive protests all over Italy. Why is Naples specifically so anti Zionist? There’s a very small population of Muslims in Italy compared to other parts of Europe so it makes the situation even more confusing. Is it related to Catholic antisemitism or anti Israel content online? Are there other factors? I’ve never seen a large wave of pro Palestinian sympathizers like this in my lifetime in Italy (as far as I can remember). Italy actually had one of the highest survival rates among Jews in all of Europe during ww2 (80%+). The rise of anti Israel sentiments in Europe seems to be contributing to the rise of antisemitism unfortunately. How will these trends be reversed? submitted by /u/OkBuyer1271 to r/Jewish [link] [comments]

Italy was ... overwhelming
Just back from a 14 day bus tour. Milan: toured the Sforza Castle, shopping area and stunning cathedral Sirmione on Lake Garda: resort area by Italy largest fresh water lake Verona: very pretty city. Padua: university and cathedral. Loved this town Venice: nice alley ways, did the gondola ride, super crowded even in September Pisa: more than just a leaning tower. An opera singer sang in the baptistry to show off the acoustics. Had the best gelato. Florence: our tour guide favored the concrete jungle. Yes architecture is stunning but I would have liked to just sit in a cafe and watch people go by or see some art galleries. Siena: incredibly pretty city. I'd come back Assisi: peaceful and lovely. Rome: we saw all the things, I'd like to see more next time such as the Trastevere neighborhood and walk the Tiber river Sorrento: near Amalfi Coast, lovely resort town on a hill overlooking turquoise waters. Pompeii: much larger than I realized, impressive! Only two thirds of 58 acres has been excavated Sicily: Palermo: a vibrant city with nice architecture and lots of cafes, restaurants & shopping Agrigento: the Mediterranean Sea was nice to swim in, sandy bottom. Valley of Temples, the Greek gods was interesting. Taormina: highly highly recommend for the views, swimming in the Ionian Sea, shopping and people watching. Sicily is a vacation site on its own. Food was in courses: Antipasto - a starter Primo - pasta Secondo - meat or fish with Contorno - veggies on the side Dolce - dessert We were ... well fed. Yet I didn't gain weight for two reasons. The ingredients in their pasta are superior to those in north America and we walked several kms per day. Durum wheat, bronze dies and slow drying. No unbleached flour. They also serve food that grows locally. It's fresh. Tomatoes tasted better, everything. Their cooking is to showcase a single ingredient or food. In Rome at Papa Rex restaurant, an accordianist and opera singer entertained us ... magnificent. Papa Rex is a popular place among locals also. In Taormina, a musical trio entertained at our last supper. They sang with the same gusto as Mexican mariachi bands. Accordian, tambourine, piccolo and guitar. Our bus driver hailed from Calabria (toe of the boot on the map) which is another place I'd love to see. Between architecture, history, food, music and the Italians way of being (everything is theater) I can say I love Italy. Muah!! submitted by /u/elisart to r/ItalyTravel [link] [comments]
