TIFU by tripping over a kettlebell and accidentally acquiring a good luck spirit
So I (32M, yes I am enormous, thank you) was at the gym a few months ago and tripped over a kettlebell like a complete idiot. We’re talking 280 lbs of pure embarrassment. This small woman with giant headphones witnessed the whole thing. Instead of laughing, she just gave me the most sincere thumbs up I have ever received in my 15 years of lifting. Like she was a referee officially ruling the fall as “acceptable.” Something in my brain short-circuited. I walked over and held up my hand. She high-fived me. I then deadlifted 600 lbs. Personal record. I have not missed a Tuesday or Thursday since. I don’t know her name. We have never spoken. I don’t even think she knows my name. But she is, without question, the source of my power. She is my pre-workout. She is my chalk. She is the reason I exist in this gym. A few weeks ago she wasn’t there on a Thursday. I pulled 40 lbs less than usual. COINCIDENCE? Absolutely not. I am currently researching whether it’s weird to ask someone to be your official good luck talisman. Asking for myself. For legal reasons she has not been informed of her duties. TL;DR: tripped, got a high five, am now spiritually bound to a stranger and cannot PR without her. submitted by /u/Schmettywhop to r/tifu [link] [comments]

Beginner Single Kettlebell Workout
The most complete beginner workout you can hit with one kettlebell. I used a 44kg, but pick a weight that works for you. One kettlebell and about 40 minutes for this one and you can do it in the living room, garage, or backyard. Swings - 5x12 Goblet Squat - 4x12 Offset Lunge - 3x10 (each side) Close Grip Floor Press - 4x12 Over/Under Row - 4x20 Ditch the gym and grab a kettlebell for one of the best beginner kettlebell workouts you can do to improve strength and conditioning. This workout is easily progressed to build a stronger and more resilient body without ever going to a gym. All of these movements are beginner friendly and you can easily up the weight or reps week after week to make some solid gains at home. submitted by /u/asgooch to r/kettlebell [link] [comments]

What actually matters when you’re new to kettlebells (from 10,000+ hours coaching)
There’s a huge amount of information out there about kettlebells, and for beginners it can feel overwhelming fast. After coaching kettlebells since 2012 (both fitness and kettlebell sport), I’ve found most progress comes from getting a few key things right early. Here’s what I see matter most: Alignment Good alignment makes the bell feel stable and loads the joints correctly. When structure is right, effort drops and control improves. Balance Proper balance and weight shift make even smaller athletes powerful. Think more like a judo throw than a lift — force travels through the whole body. Grip This is where the rubber meets the road. Proper grip prevents hand tears, reduces tendon stress, and vary dependingon the situation. Weight Selection The closer you constantly train to your max, the closer you move toward injury. Progress comes from sustainable loading, not survival reps. Volume Kettlebell lifting is cyclical by nature. Moderate weight + higher total volume builds strength, durability, and stamina with lower injury risk. If your goal is maximal single-rep strength, a barbell is usually the better tool — but kettlebells excel at repeatable power and resilience. These principles come from years of coaching and are part of a structured system I put together in my kettlebell training library. If people are interested, I’m happy to share more. submitted by /u/Prokettlebell to r/kettlebell [link] [comments]

Physique with just kettlebells?
Are there people who just use kettlebells at home for their workouts? (No gym or dumbells etc.). If so, how does your body muscle mass look / is one able to get the insta muscles / defined body look using just kettlebells. Or is this not possible as can’t do as many isolated movements as possible using weight machines at the gym/ dumbbells? submitted by /u/Square-Plane-1000 to r/kettlebell [link] [comments]

What kettlebells did for me.
I am 39m, 5’10” and before the summer, I was a 190lbs with a dadbod. Here’s the thing—I used to be fit. Not elite; I wasn’t going to win any bodybuilding competitions. But in my 20s, I was athletic. I played soccer. I ran marathons. But then we had a baby. And then a global pandemic. My exercise routine was low on the totem pole in responsibilities, and my physique suffered. This last summer, something snapped. It was seeing myself in pictures, seeing how chubby I was getting. So, I grabbed a kettlebell. I don’t even know why. I’d never done kettlebell work in the past. Maybe it’s because I prefer more plyometric exercises instead of just curling dumbbells. Anyway, I started a pretty simple routine. Three times per week, I grabbed a kettlebell. Started out pretty light, 30lbs, and I did swings, thrusters, snatches. 100 swings, 100 pushups, 50 pullups was a pretty normal workout. Or I’d do 10x10 snatches (5 each arm) and/or 5x10 thrusters. What was crazy was my aerobic efficiency and VO2 max shot up as well, and I started mixing in running (I haven’t ran in years!) again. Twice per week, I started running at least 3.1 miles, something that would not have been possible without KB swings. Kettlebells have completely changed my life. I have more energy than ever and feel like myself again. submitted by /u/ajbrandt806 to r/kettlebell [link] [comments]

Why do people seem to have such a success with kettlebells?
I have throughout my life been taught that the barbell is the king of building an athletic body. The argument has always been: The barbell is able to load more weight, and this will be better for the athletiscm being developed. Given the above statement, the kettlebeell should be lagging quite much behind the barbell given the lower weights used. However, when reading up on kettlebells, people seems to get very good results, I'm very surprised by the "before/after" pictures people share. There even seems to be a coined name for this "what the hell effect"? If the barbell is so superior to the kettlebell in terms of athletiscm, what is the reasoning behind the success behind kettlebells? My first thought is a bias among users, but that doesn't necessarily seem true as people with plenty of experience within weightlifting also seems to get nice gains with them. submitted by /u/FluidDebate to r/kettlebell [link] [comments]

Got way into kettlebells this year - progress pic
Original weight was 242 on January 25th. Current weight is ~210 on July 21st. 42 years old. I just want to gush a little about what a marvelous thing kettlebell workouts are. I’ve been in and out of shape many times, but I don’t think I felt quite as athletic as I’m starting to feel now. The cardiovascular conditioning is top notch when using circuit style training, and I’m getting more core work in than I ever did before. Not one workout I’ve done in the last 6 months lasted longer than 45 minutes (I knock them out closer to 35 minutes now), and I’m basically never sore. The full body nature of the training that kettlebells lend themselves to has me seeing muscle growth everywhere at once, and somehow it never gets grueling the way bro splits always did for me eventually. It’s something to do with how active and high energy the workouts feel. I’m not sitting on a bench getting cold waiting for a single isolated muscle group to stop burning so I can go again. Instead I’m waiting for my heart rate to slow down enough to go to the next movement. Covered in sweat, gasping for air, but excited to do the next thing anyway. Anyway that’s a long winded way to say this is awesome and I wish I found it a decade ago. It really feels like it’s turning back the clock. submitted by /u/SlitheryDee62 to r/kettlebell [link] [comments]

I climbed mountains with Wim Hof, swam with virtual Great White sharks, learned to juggle kettlebells, used float tanks, took a 5-hour sauna with Latvian shamans, MDMA with psychologists and ayahuasca in Peru. All of this in pursuit of a human power that I call “The Wedge.” I’m Scott Carney. AMA.
TLDR?: How about watching a 2 minute video instead? I’m an investigative journalist, anthropologist and author of the New York Times Bestselling book “What Doesn’t Kill Us” and wrote about Wim Hof before he became the international superstar he is today. Before that I was better known for exposing organ trafficking rings and false gurus for Wired, Mother Jones, Playboy, NPR and Men’s Journal. I’m here on reddit today because I just released a new book called “The Wedge.” And, like every author who does an AMA: I’d love you to read it. For the last few years I’ve been traveling around the world trying to discover esoteric techniques that help put space between stimulus and response--things that allow us to take control over our bodies’ autonomic processes--so that we can thrive amidst adversity. So, I studied the roots of fear in a neuroscience lab in Stanford by swimming with virtual great white sharks, I learned a crazy kettlebell throwing exercise where there’s constant risk of breaking a foot, plunged into sensory deprivation tanks at a brain research institute in Oklahoma, fasted, took a 5 hours sauna with Latvian shamans called “pirtnieks,” did MDMA with my wife in the presence of two clinical psychologists and ended my journey in the Peruvian amazon where I engaged in a series of ayahuasca rituals where I wasn’t sure whether I was going to go mad or find transcendence. So, yeah, in other words, and completely unintentionally, my life sort of sounds like a summary of Joe Rogan’s greatest hits. (To make things stranger, I also produced a podcast about my wife’s year long search for Bigfoot--which I hear is also a Rogan passion, but I digress). I’ve been doing all these things is because I’m very interested in how humans respond to stress and how repeated exposure to difficult things makes us stronger and more resilient in any circumstance. I believe The Wedge lies at the heart of just about every human experience. We evolved to use it. It’s a power that we all have when we’re born and start learning to use our bodies, but over time as we get comfortable in our environment we stop using it. My book is an effort to try to dig deeply into the concept and test out different wedges for myself. I’ve also started a subreddit called r/wedge that I hope can be a place for people to explore this concept deeper and share their own experiences pushing their own limits and honing their own wedges. Last time I did one of these people were pretty interested in my relationship with Wim Hof and the various things I’ve done in the cold. While I’m sure that some people will think that I’m crazy, give me a shot and I’ll do my best to answer all of your questions. Oh yeah: Here’s some instagram and twitter proof. 1:50 PM MT: After almost four and a half hours it seems that the comments are finally slowing down with 617 in the feed. I will check back in a little later to see if I can answer more, but I'm a bit tired after typing pretty much constantly this whole time. Please excuse typos etc. There was a nice mix of skepticism and interest here and I did my best to address everyone along the way. submitted by /u/gekogekogeko to r/IAmA [link] [comments]
