Grab a kettlebell and a partner for one of my favorite foundation focused kettlebell workouts. This one isn’t meant to be the most advanced workout, just a minimal and effective workout you can do pretty much weekly that’s fun, effective, and easy to follow and progress. It’ll hammer full body and you really only need one kettlebell for it (I did use two though). Favorite thing about kettlebells: you can do really wild and technical exercises or you can just hit the basics. They’re easily the most versatile training tool out there. Beginner Kettlebell Workout
Here's the breakdown of this 3 day a week full body workout that hits the main beginner kettlebell movement patterns while getting in single arm/leg work that a lot of people never train. The Workout: Kettlebell Swing Your posterior chain and power builder. Builds explosive hips, strong glutes, and really solid conditioning. Clean to Squat Fast twitch coordination and core/lower body strength. The clean develops power and timing. The front rack squat forces your core, quads, and upper back to work to support the weight. Goblet Reverse Lunge Single leg strength, stronger knees, better stability and balance. You'll find out real quick which side's slacking on this one. This one builds balance, mobility, and legs with less weight. Bent Over Row Upper back, lats, grip, core all in one exercise. You can't throw, sprint, or lift heavy without a strong backside. This is also great for bad posture and a weak pull. Single Arm Floor Press Chest, shoulders (front delt), and triceps. Unlike a regular bench press, this forces you to control your body on the floor, and the pressing is harder with offset weight. If you were to do this one three times a week I would sub kb push press for one or two of the floor press days. If you have snatches dialed then: one floor press, one push press, one snatch day for number 5. Covers push, pull, squat, hinge, and core. Got way into kettlebells this year - progress pic
Original weight was 242 on January 25th. Current weight is ~210 on July 21st. 42 years old. I just want to gush a little about what a marvelous thing kettlebell workouts are. I’ve been in and out of shape many times, but I don’t think I felt quite as athletic as I’m starting to feel now. The cardiovascular conditioning is top notch when using circuit style training, and I’m getting more core work in than I ever did before. Not one workout I’ve done in the last 6 months lasted longer than 45 minutes (I knock them out closer to 35 minutes now), and I’m basically never sore. The full body nature of the training that kettlebells lend themselves to has me seeing muscle growth everywhere at once, and somehow it never gets grueling the way bro splits always did for me eventually. It’s something to do with how active and high energy the workouts feel. I’m not sitting on a bench getting cold waiting for a single isolated muscle group to stop burning so I can go again. Instead I’m waiting for my heart rate to slow down enough to go to the next movement. Covered in sweat, gasping for air, but excited to do the next thing anyway. Anyway that’s a long winded way to say this is awesome and I wish I found it a decade ago. Just starting with kettlebells, seeking exercise recommendations
I recently snagged a 53lb kettlebell off marketplace because it was such a good deal. Last night I had very limited time so I decided to do my first kettlebell only workout because of how streamlined it seemed. A quick google lead me to the image I shared and man did this workout rock! I can’t believe how well it gassed me in just 20 minutes. I think I really like the EMOM style and was hoping to get some recommendations for other movements or workouts. Feedback appreciated. PSA Kettlebells are the most dad friendly workout routine
So before I became a dad I used to love going to the gym. I loved doing heavy squats and barbell exercises, I loved running on the treadmill and feeling exhausted afterwords. It was a big part of my self care and mental health maintenance. Since becoming a dad years ago my wife and I have both tried to figure out how to get back in the gym and we just haven’t figured out how to carve out the hours in the week for me to drive to the gym, workout, and drive home, several times a week. It just feels unrealistic for this stage of our lives. I had tried getting some dumbbells and working out at home before but they never gave me that full body workout feeling, and I missed the cardio aspect of workout out too. Also I tried doing all these different multi-set bodyweight routines and it was just taking too long. Enter kettlebells. I lurked around the kettlebells subreddit and watched some YouTube videos and picked up a pair of 35lb kbs. With kettlebells I only need a small amount of equipment and in a short workout I can hit my strength training, core work, and cardio and feel exhausted after. Lately I’ve been doing emom complexes where you do a series of exercises every minute on the minute. After 15 minutes I am completely spent and I feel like I’ve gotten a good workout for the day. Doing just 15 mins daily since the beginning of this year has seriously changed my body composition and I’m starting to feel like my old self again. Anyway, story time over, I just thought I’d share my journey in case any of you dads are where I was, wondering how to maintain strength and workout with barely any time.
