So I built this contraption to recycle my K-pods. I'll try and put some explanatory stills in the comments (since it doesn't seem to allow me to mix them in the intro). I wanted the coffee grounds for my somewhat alkaline garden. GFL in Calgary insists they can recycle the PP5 plastic in the pods (without separating the bits of foil and paper ?) but I'm dubious about that. Probably ends up in their "waste to energy" incinerator. In any event, I thought you might enjoy, or even be inspired, by my creation. 80 psi air supply. Knife 'puck' is 3 Olfa blades with a tip spot weld, glued into shallow slots. it's removable with a wing nut below. The piston head is 3/4" PVC stuffed with wood and PL Premium glue. The pod retainer is 2" built in vacuum pipe (perfect fit) with another section sliced and glued in to support the pod rim. Piston and controls are Amazon. About $100 Cdn all in. Tower could have had a larger, more solid. base but it's holding up well. You don't have to pre-slice the pod foil, but it is easier on the piston. When folks ask how they can stretch their grocery/eating out budget, a common piece of advice is to make coffee at home. So I want to know what your ways to make your coffee feel special on a budget. Is it a specific creamer or coffee? A morning ritual? For me, I was able to score an older but working Keurig machine on my local Buy Nothing group. I purchased bulk pods for a while (about $0.50 per cup of coffee, not terrible) and they were ok, did the trick. But I felt bad about using disposable pods so I asked my friend to gift me a couple of reusable k-cup filters for the holidays and OH MY GOODNESS. The amount of coffee they use per cup is so little and the coffee is so much better! I'm a 2 cup per day drinker and I can now make a regular 12 oz package of coffee last 75% longer than I could when I was doing a pour over or a small drip coffee maker. Even if I purchased a Keurig new, with the coffee savings, it would probably pay for itself over two months. Plus the coffee is like 10x better than the pods Edit: y'all came through! I live in an apartment community which has a keurig coffee maker for its residents to use. On occasions I have gone to make myself a coffee and the keurig has been out of stock. Because of this, I got into a habit of taking a few coffee pods back to my apartment to ensure I can have a coffee every day. I usually keep a stock of 3 and will resupply as needed. This morning, while making my coffee, I noticed the coffee bar had been recently restocked and I knew my supply at home was low so I was planning to take 2 coffee pods back with me. Another resident however saw me and decided to huff and puff. She accused me of theft, stealing from the community, and causing a toxic living space. I had never seen this lady before and just piped back that she should mind her own business. I then took my coffee, 2 pods, and went back to my apt. Since then the situation has got me thinking and I would like the opinion of others to see if my actions are appropriate. I feel like I am just utilizing a feature of my apartment complex and that since no one is getting harmed there is no foul? Edit: People are missing the point, I understand there are other ways to make coffee Frugally and in a environmentally conscious way. But there's millions of Kuerigs out there that people use everyday, this is an adjustment to how they use it that is environmentally positive, and cheaper for the use case of a Keurig. I (F20s) and a British person living with my husband in the States for work. Previously I worked from home and went into the office a few times a month but things have changed and I now work in-office Mon-Wed. Everyday around noon someone does a Starbucks run for the office staff (12 people). Management pays for our drinks and food items on the Starbucks run so no employee pays out of pocket. Essentially we are being given free Starbucks via gift card and a different person goes and gets it each day. I've only been working in-office on a three day schedule for two and a half weeks three and a half weeks. The first couple times I worked I was forgotten. However this also happened to the guy who started when I joined and we both have out-of-the-way offices and being new we just weren't thought of. Apologies were made and no hard feelings for that. Being English I enjoy a nice cup of hot tea. However, my first week I declined a drink because I had brought with me a bottle of juice and it was still warm, but I did ask for a pastry, and was given the pastry. The next week I worked it had finally gotten colder so I requested a tea. That first day my tea was forgotten but not my pastry. The second day the runner scoffed and called my order silly. Both my tea and my pastry were forgotten. The third day the runner told me straight up he wouldn't buy me a tea because it's a silly drink. I hadn't reported this to management because I'm new and didn't want to make waves. No one else has been forgotten or mocked. I don't want to jump the xenophobic conclusions and I'm not sure if I'm just being hazed. This recent Wednesday I came in and was told I was to be the one making the coffee run. (Screwed up my time-frame a little, this happened LAST week, not this week). I politely declined and said that since my own order was always such trouble I would not be participating any longer and therefore would not be doing the runs at any time in the future or that day. I got a load of shit and later, a stern lecture from the manager, during which time I informed her of the previously issues. This culminated in the entire coffee run being canceled and management announcing we are now responsible for our own drinks. My husband felt bad for me and bought me a little personal Kurig for my office and some of my favorite drink pods. I brought it to the office and keep it in the cut-out in my desk where the tower used to go when they used desktops. My office is glass walls and I have a door and I haven't let anyone use my Kurig and take it home when I'm going to be out. AITA for not sticking to the status quo and also having a Kurig I don't share? ETA: I edited to correct the time-frame, I've been in office three and a half weeks, this happened last week. Since the day this happened my coworkers have been treating me very coldly and have been ostracizing me. I've also had several requests to leave my Keurig at the office and let others use it.
