I own a Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen and bought a Kobo Clara BW (review)
I’d like to preface this by saying that there is an unprecedented amount of hype for the Kobo, like everywhere, on every social media platform. This review is also mostly about the Kobo but a lot of it is in comparison to the Kindle. I’ve owned my Kindle PW ($299 RRP)* for 2 months now, and the Kobo Clara BW ($249 RRP) for 2 weeks. I've not owned e-reader devices previously. For reference, the Kobo Libra Colour is $349 RRP which is the next upgrade available. I get hating Amazon, but people make it sound like the Kobos are superior in every single way. This hasn't been the case in my personal use. For context, I read 4-5 hours a day on average on my e-readers. What I liked about the Kobo Cara BW: Overdrive, if you’re not in America, Kobo has this over Kindle. This is arguably the biggest advantage. The build, I love how light the Kobo is, it makes it comfortable to hold for long periods of time. ‘Sticky’ fonts per book. I like reading more than one book at once, and I also like my font to match the genre. So I love that the book will open in the previous font you made it instead of having to change every time. Allows you to turn justification off. I don’t like hyphenated broken off words. This isn’t an option on Kindles. When you look up a word/phrase there is an option to do so via browser. This helps when there's no definition or it's a cultural reference. Kindle only has dictionary, wikipedia and in book. It is customisable, but everything I’ve so far ‘customised’ has been things the Kindle does by default. What I didn’t like about the Kobo Clara BW: Reading Experience There is no in built clock display while reading. I initially installed nickelclock but later found out that there is a huge issue where the time will freeze even while you’re using it (e.g. it’ll say 1:27 when it’s currently 1:50). I know nanoclock is a solution (hopefully?) but this is a lot of work and is very inconvenient. Ghosting, there is much more ghosting compared to my Kindle. Lagging, there is also much more lagging/it is much slower compared to my Kindle (when doing searches, when typing words in etc) Unresponsive page turns - once every 5 minutes or so, I’ll tap and then the page doesn’t turn. 10 seconds later I’ll tap again and then the page turns twice. Apparently this is a known software issue. … Annotations, you need to click the ‘save’ button to save your annotation. I once lost an annotation because I mis-clicked the close button. Sometimes I write a whole paragraph. Highlighting, it is not as intuitive as the Kindle is, e.g. it keeps on starting at the 3rd word in the sentence whereas the Kindle will know to start the highlight from the beginning of the sentence. Syncing Issues. Sometimes it loses reading positions despite wifi being connected and also previously reading to that updated position on the Kobo itself. This has never happened with my Kindle. It’s happened twice with the Kobo on 2 weeks. Minor but it was noticeable to me that the display is less crisp. Also the default font settings were uncomfortable for me, this improved after increasing weight and reducing line spacing size, but again, on the Kindle I’ve only ever needed to change font size. Features Lack of multiple library card integration with Overdrive, which is something Kobo actively took away. If you’re in America, you actually could read library books from multiple libraries at the same time with Libby on your Kindle. I usually read 2 books at once. Only Libby books that are also sold on the Kobo store can be viewed on the Kobo. When I log out of a library, then log back in, the Kobo loses the annotations on books currently loaned from that Library. The annotations still show up on my phone’s kobo app. If I want to restore these annotations on my Kobo, I have to log out of my entire Kobo account and redo the whole set up process. Exporting annotations: You cannot do so natively with non-Kobo/Kobo Plus books, this includes Libby books. The work around is editing the Kobo’s config file by plugging it into your computer. One you’ve edited the config file you can only export from the Kobo e-reader, then you must plug your Kobo back into a computer to save that annotation file. Formatting. Exported annotations (on my Libby book) does not include chapters or location or any other information about the highlight. There are many Kobo/Kobo Plus book that don't allow exporting annotations, and you also cannot export and manage these annotations from the mobile app. In comparison, Kindles allow you to export annotations on documents (‘send to kindle’ files) from your Kindle app on any device, and with MLA, Chicago or APA style formatting. Each highlight includes the colour of the highlight, the chapter, the page and the location. You can export the annotations of any book and do so on the app There is no equivalent in built ‘send to kindle’ feature so you can only sideload books via plugging it into a pc and that won’t sync across devices. I understand there are third party work arounds, but again this isn’t anywhere near as seamless as built in features. Bonus things that I like about my Kindle: X-ray for official Kindle Books Notes and Highlights that sync to goodreads Polished vocabulary builder with flashcards Easier to restart lol These are just the things that have come up in my own personal usage so I'm sure I've missed many things. If I’m mistaken about something please let me know, or if my Kobo Clara BW sounds defective based on my description 😭. What I value most in an e-reader is the reading experience, convenience and access to books. My foremost complaint is the lack of transparency of above downsides around Kobo hype and recommendations. Notes: *Prices are in AUD Most issues I’ve mentioned with the Kobo are things where the third party tools/work around don’t exist, however, for the ones that do, the fact that I need to do so in the first place is still a flaw. Link to my older reddit post with pictures of Kobo ghosting and grainy-ness mentioned EDIT: Not people in the comments proving my point 😭 more kobo ghosting examples difference in 'crispness' of display, 'ad' is Kindle, 'or' is Kobo Final Edit: In the comments, quite a few people have actually disagreed with the things I personally liked about the Kobo e.g. the build (I care about comfort more than 'premium-ness') and font configuration. It just goes to show how different people like different features and prioritise different things, which I hope is the main takeaway of my review and this post. Hence why it is so important to be upfront about features of a device you're recommending instead of deciding which ones takes precedence over others, because at the end of the day, that's a personal decision and as very clearly shown, different for everyone. All observations made by me are as of 5th April 2026, with software up to date on both devices. If you're reading this in the future, be sure to check for relevant software and features updates :) submitted by /u/Sleepy_Enigma to r/ereader [link] [comments]

Thinking of moving from Kindle Paperwhite to reMarkable Paper Pro Move.
Hi! I’ve been a loving Kindle Paperwhite user for years, but I’m feeling the itch to do more with e-ink. Atm I'm looking at the reMarkable Paper Pro Move, but certain things make me hesitant. What I love about my paperwhite: The eink display.. duh : ) Warm backlight with dark mode for night reading. Smooth performance and reading experience. Sending out highlights automaticaly (to readwise in my case). The pocket size and that the battery lasts forever. Why I’m looking to upgrade: I want to be able to read my saved magazine articles on e-ink (main reason) I love eink - I want to do more on it. Notes sounds great. My big questions about the Move: Is it too limiting? Somewhere I even read it is not ment for reading? What is the reading experience? Does the chrome extension work well? Could it replace my Readwise Reader read-it-later experience (I am no power user)? Info here is a bit thin. Can you read in dark mode? Can you use it in black-n-white or is the colour forced? I’d love to hear from anyone who transitioned from a eink reader to Move for reading purpose mainly. Was it worth it? Or any other suggestions? Thanks in advance! Kindle Paperwhite vs Kobo Libra Colour — which would you keep? 😭
I need help deciding which one to keep. I've had my Kindle Paperwhite since 2023 and only got the Kobo Libra Colour last December. I originally bought the Kobo for color manhwa and the idea of annotating, but...! haven't even really used the color feature. I mostly read novels. Mainly bought this out of curiosity as a lot of people said the Kobo IU is a lot more superior. Here's where I'm torn: • I miss my Kindle. The screen is so crisp and clean, easier on my eyes. • The Kobo's grain does, in fact, bother me (like... it really does) contrary to what people say. • The warm/cool light range on the Kobo doesn't feel enough for me. • I’m just a sentimental person lol. I couldn’t let my first ever Kindle go. BUT: • I love the Libra's side grip + physical buttons. SO much easier when reading because I don’t have a PopSocket on it unlike my Kindle. • It's super easy to adjust brightness and settings. • I like the idea of color and annotating... but I don't think I can justify buying the pen. • AND I already purchased two official Kobo cases (don’t judge, did it out of excitement considering I was expecting to replace my Kindle entirely.) So now I'm stuck between: Kindle = simplicity + crisp screen + what I'm used to Kobo = features + buttons + potential I'm not really using and I possibly will not use ever For those who've tried both, which would you keep and why? Especially if you mainly read novels. And no I CAN’T keep both 😅 I don’t see a reason why I should have more than one main ereader (especially since I have the xteink x4 lol). Convince me one way or the other, I’m so torn. submitted by /u/icedpurematcha to r/ereader [link] [comments]

What’s your favorite kindle paperwhite case with a cover?
I have the paperwhite signature 12th gen in the metallic green color and love it so much. I’m currently using a kindle case I got from Etsy. It has a cover, a strap & stand, and it’s magnetic on the back as well to keep the cover in place when reading. I do love this case but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions? This one is a bit bulky and heavy. I’d love some recommendations for a slimmer case that also has a cover, maybe a clear back as well. Is spending more on a leather Kindle case actually worth it long term?
Grabbed a leather Kindle case and now I'm wondering if it was actually worth paying more for. Not really about looks. Returned my first Kindle (Colorsoft) and kept the Paperwhite — my honest experience
Hey everyone, I bought the Kindle Colorsoft as my first Kindle and today I decided to return it. Why? Even though I really loved having colors, something felt off from the beginning. There was noticeable light bleeding on the edges, the text looked slightly blurry because of the grainy background, and the blue light felt too strong. At night, this made reading tiring and uncomfortable. I then bought the Paperwhite 12 and compared them side by side. With some sadness about leaving colors behind, I ended up sticking with the Paperwhite. The screen is not grainy, the text sharpness and contrast are clearly superior, and reading both books and manga feels much more pleasant at any time of day. I wanted to share my experience in case someone is on the fence between the Colorsoft and the Paperwhite for the same use case as mine: books and manga. In my opinion, the Paperwhite is the better choice. Colors are a huge and exciting feature, but they don’t compensate for the screen weaknesses, especially considering the price. The Colorsoft feels more like a first MVP to test market adoption. I really hope future generations improve the display, because if these issues are fixed, the Colorsoft could easily become the main Kindle line. submitted by /u/ShoryukenEnjoyer to r/kindle [link] [comments]

Amazon's update broke my Kindle Paperwhite and my heart.
My Kindle Paperwhite (2022) was working fine until the update in August or early September. As soon as it updated, I turned on my Kindle and found all of my books, audioboks and documents were unavailable. All 1,627 items on my Kindle were suddenly unreachable. I called customer service right away. They told me the only way forward was to wipe everything. I balked. That's a lot of downloading, I said. Don't worry, they told me. Everything will be restored. If it doesn't show up on your Kindle automatically, we will take care of downloading the materials for you. But I had 72 documents. What about those? Don't worry, they said. We, tech support, will send you a link in your email within 24-48 hours that will solve everything. It will be resolved just fine, they said, but if it isn't, then maybe we can send you a different device. Just in case. But you can only have that if yours is not working. We will check. And you send it in with receipts. Your paperwork has to be valid. You can't just send one. Hmmm. I didn't understand the attitude, but that was not about me. Okay, I said. The next time I heard from tech support was when I called in September. My Kindle still wasn't working. It still couldn't find any of its content. I guess the tech support email they mentioned was sent to the Great Space Coaster. It never materialized on my end. It is now November. I wiped my Kindle yesterday, per instructions. The wipe is the only way, they had told me. Spent an hour downloading books before I realized the Kindle had only saved about 25 of the 500 or so books I had sent. I called tech support. Don't worry, they said. Go ahead and do a factory reboot. We will send you an email that will resolve everything. Then you can download your content again. Hmmm. So we were back to the drawing board. They were now telling me I had to wipe my Kindle a SECOND time in order for it to work properly. Also, the promise of help with my content had been smoothly disappeared. But I still have the mysterious magic email to look forward to. Oh, and I noticed the only mention of a replacement Kindle had gone from sending me a Kindle to "...maybe we can get you a discount on a new device". Oh. You broke my Kindle, and MAYBE you'll give me a coupon for a discount? Oh, honey. Why would you think I would ever give you money for a Kindle again? I have been a Kindle customer for a lot of years now. I was gifted my first one under protest, but fell immediately head over heels. I don't go anywhere without my Kindle. So, as you can imagine, I do not have any desire to send my Kindle anywhere. I just want it to work properly. If I had dropped my Kindle into a pool or lit it on fire, then I would understand the lackadaisical response I am receiving. Let's be clear, though: None of this was my doing. Amazon sent an update that destroyed my device. So far, they have not been helpful in ameliorating this situation in any way. I want them to fix the mess they made. Give me a device that works. Sure, in exchange for the one they messed up. I have no compunction about that. I love my Kindle. Until this happened, I did not go anywhere without it. I have taken to carrying my Kindle Keyboard around, but it's not backlit, which creates a different kind of challenge, especially at bedtime. I need a night light to read in bed again. Also, I suspect my Keyboard is only working because I turned off its wifi. l have no interest in seeing what would happen if I let the Keyboard update. Another disaster, I suppose. By the by--I just tried to boot up my Kindle a little while ago. It took four minutes. During the first minute, the screen was almost completely blank. I could just see the time at the top. I have carried my Kindle with me everywhere, every day, since that gift in 2010. But this treatment has been so execrable that I think this is my last Kindle. It's hard to imagine ever buying a new device from Amazon again. submitted by /u/WellReadHermit to r/kindle [link] [comments]

My thoughts - Kindle Paperwhite 2024 vs Kobo Libra Colour vs Kobo Clara BW
I thought I'd share my thoughts on these devices, on the off chance it helps someone else with their decision making. First, I like all three - almost too much, because often I want to use one I'm not! If you end up chosing any of these three, I think you've got a very good ereader. For context, since 2020 my primary eReader had been a Kindle Oasis. I liked the screen, but the battery life wasn't great and with a case on holding it felt awkward - the flat front made it a weird triangular shape when folded behind during reading. In 2022 I bought a scribe (new thing), and while I loved its thinness and screen, I only really used it sitting in an armchair. Not curled up in bed, not on my commute. It proved much more convenient just to use my phone in these circumstances. When the new Kobos came out I pretty quickly succumbed to the temptation of a colour ereader. Did I need colour? No. But new and shiny (see above). I chose the Libra colour, thinking it was essentially a like-for-like replacement of my Oasis but with the following advantages: Not locked into the Amazon ecosystem Retained the page turn buttons and 'handle' Flat back Better battery Colour (albeit in my use case this just meant covers in colour) Stylus support, so I could use it as a notebook. For 6 months it was my main ereader, and I still really like it. But to summarise my thoughts on it: The software was great and very liberating compared to Amazon. The screen is grainy, which is fine - it just looks like textured paper. I quite liked that aspect. But it's also dark, and in just about any lighting condition the built in light is required. This I found noticable and I felt more like I was using a screen than on my Kindles. The device felt quite wide, particularly in its Sleepcover case which adds a stylus holder. This meant it was often more comfortable to hold two handed, which wasn't always comfortable (standing on a train, lying on my side in bed). The lop-sided nature due to the buttons and large bezel means when changing hand you have to rotate the device. This is very, very minor but I did find it distracting sometimes and took me away from the book. For my personal use case, the stylus was a completely unnecessary feature. Colour was unnecessary 95% of the time. So a great device, and the above sounds more negative than I feel about it, but not perfect. Then Amazon announced new Kindles. I succumbed for the second time in the year, and got the 2024 Paperwhite. I got the jade green signature edition. Thoughts on using this for 6 months: Superb screen. This was the reason I got it - it offered me a screen the quality of my Scribe, but in a more portable form. 'Send to Kindle' and Whispersync. There wasn't much I missed from Amazon on the software side, but I did use these features a lot to swap between PC / Phone / Kindle. The device feels very premium. I love the jade green and flush screen. Rectangular shape - felt much more natural to move from one hand to the other, and it is lighter than then Libra colour. No need to rotate the device! Distraction free, in that regard at least. ~75% of my books are from Amazon, so it was familiar and easy to return. Then Amazon stopped with the 'Download and Transfer' option, and I became more wary of being locked into that ecosystem. I missed the Kobo software. So my thoughts strayed to the Kobo Clara BW. Could I have the best of both worlds? Kobo software with an excellent black and white screen. After a couple of months of thinking about it, yesterday I bit the bullet. The main hestiation, beyond having several perfectly functional devices, was the smaller screen. I like the 7" form. But, from 2011-2020 I had a 6" screen kindle, so I hoped I'd adjust back quickly, and so far it feels pretty natural. Initial thoughts on the Clara BW: It feels the purest ereader, which is part nostaglia with the recessed screen taking me back to my first kindle but also part not requiring any backlight in most daytime situations so far. Screen is great. Perhaps not quite Paperwhite level, although I don't think you'd notice and the Clara has less glare anyway due to the lack of an extra layer of glass for the flushed screen. Very easy to hold. So far, so good. Will have to decide if I'm selling the others - clearly I don't actually need all 3. But I do like them all... Paperwhite would be easiest to jettison now, but it still feels the most premium of the three. Attached photos are all at 0% brightness, just for comparisons sake. Anyway, if anyone is like me and struggles to chose devices, then perhaps some of the above is of interest. submitted by /u/Mattzo12 to r/kobo [link] [comments]

I’ve already read more books this month than all of last year 😂 Loving it so far! All stickers and accessories are from Etsy, and the clear case and Popsocket are from Amazon. Happy reading! submitted by /u/caitlynhow to r/kindle [link] [comments]

My custom Kindle case finally came!
Thanks to another post here a couple weeks ago I found out about Klevercase and was very excited to get one for myself with a different title. Ended up getting a new Paperwhite for Christmas to go with it. submitted by /u/GunnerMcGrath to r/brandonsanderson [link] [comments]

Kindle Colorsoft First Impressions
Very impressed, especially compared to my Kobo Libra Colour (KLC). The screen is very high quality on black and white text and colours look lovely - more vibrant than the KLC. Device is a fair bit wider than the Paperwhite but just as thick. The new (p)leather case is lovely as well and folds back well. Any questions, just ask! submitted by /u/Alasdair91 to r/kindle [link] [comments]

The Kindle Paperwhite is my new best friend.
I love books. I buy a lot of books, more than I can read and they take up a lot of space. I love the feel, the weight, the SMELL of books. I buy a lot secondhand through thriftbooks. I will never give up on physical books BUT... Now I can read in the dark without eyestrain, read on my side in bed, read on the go without lugging around a book, read in the bath without fear of getting pages wet. The best part: I got my new kindle on an Amazon deal. It was a "kids" kindle, but not REALLY. The difference is, it comes with a kids+ year subscription (includes some YA books which I'm a sucker for) which you gotta make a kids profile and PIN to use but whatever, it comes with a case, and it's got a longer warranty. To access your regular account you just exit amazon kids. It's only 8GB but I forsee ot taking a LONG TIME to acquire that many, especially since I try to stick to the free books and prime reading books and libby. I was debating getting a kindle ereader for a long time (I was a skeptic) and even though I've only had it for a few days, I can sincerely say that I LOVE it. Best purchase I've made in a while. submitted by /u/cats_and_stacks to r/books [link] [comments]
