Sorry, but Korean food just isn’t for me (yet!)
This is my third time trying Propaganda, and even though I genuinely want to like it, I still struggle to enjoy the strong, bold flavors typical of Korean cuisine. I should also say that Propaganda feels more like an Asian fusion spot rather than a place focused on traditional Korean food, so that might play a role as well. I’m honestly open-minded and would love to change this perception. Where would you recommend I go to experience Korean food in a way that might finally win me over? submitted by /u/BiteAndTell to r/foodincopenhagen [link] [comments]

An older Korean lady keeps bringing me food
So I own a beef ranch and sell beef at our local farmers market, been there for a few years. I'm a veteran who spent 3 years and 3 months in Korea in the 90s and early 2000s and absolutely love the food. A Korean lady talked to me because we were offering galbi style waygu ribs and I talked to her a little while. She used to own a restaurant in California and when she heard how much I love Korean food she brought me some the next week. I gave her some ribs. Then she brought me more food. I gave her some oxtail. More food. Brisket. Ribeye. Etc. If she wasn't 70, and married and I wasn't in a relationship I'd be in love. She's legit very sweet and I do love the food. Just thought I'd share some of what she's made me. submitted by /u/trampush to r/KoreanFood [link] [comments]

Why Korean food is so different from Chinese or Japanese food: a cuisine shaped by scarcity, not abundance (feat. my dinner)
https://preview.redd.it/dm1yjlj6va9g1.jpg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44e89d5e0c70394d60652151d335a163125e2a94 Hello from Seoul. I took this photo of my dinner a few days ago—Suyuk-gukbap (boiled pork soup), Sundae (Korean blood sausage), and Makgeolli(rice wine). Looking at this table, I realized it explains something important about why Korean food developed so differently from its neighbors. It’s not just about flavor preferences. It’s about long-term adaptation to a harsh environment on the Korean Peninsula. People often describe Chinese cuisine as incredibly diverse—and it is. A vast continent allows for regional abundance, oil-heavy cooking, and rich meat stocks. At first glance, Korean food might seem like just a subset of that larger spectrum. But there is one key difference: Korean food historically uses very little oil. 1. Cooking without oil (Look at the pork) Unlike many Chinese dishes that rely on frying and lard, the pork in my photo is boiled, not fried. Historically, raising pigs for fat was difficult in Korea. Pigs compete with humans for grain, and grain was scarce. Cattle, on the other hand, were preserved for farming. As a result, Korean cooking evolved around boiling, steaming, and blanching, with only small amounts of plant-based oils like sesame oil. This is why Korean food often tastes clean and light rather than rich or greasy. Interestingly, meals can feel filling while remaining relatively low in calories—a weakness in premodern times, but a strength in today’s health-conscious world. 2. Fermentation as a substitute for abundance (Look at the side dishes) Scarcity also explains why fermentation became central, not optional. Kimchi and radish kimchi preserved vegetables through long winters. Saeujeot (salted shrimp) replaced meat stock, sugar, or heavy seasoning. Makgeolli is fermented rice—nutrition, alcohol, and preservation in one. Fermentation allowed Korean food to generate deep umami without relying on meat fat or large quantities of protein. 3. Using everything: food without hierarchy (Look at the Sundae) The sausage-looking dish is Sundae, made from pig intestines filled with noodles, vegetables, and blood. When resources are scarce, nothing is wasted. “Inedible” parts become delicacies. Over time, this produced a food culture with surprisingly little class hierarchy—the ingredients and dishes eaten by elites and commoners were often very similar. This is why, historically, the gap between what a “king” ate and what a peasant ate in Korea was much smaller than in many other societies. Summary This meal isn’t just dinner. It’s a portable history lesson. Korean food is a high-efficiency survival system shaped by scarcity: boiling instead of frying, fermenting instead of stock-making, using every part instead of discarding. Ironically, these survival traits—low oil, fermentation, minimal waste—are exactly what modern people now consider healthy, sustainable, and low-carbon. P.S. Next time, I want to explore this further: Why was the distance between royal and common food so small in Korea? It turns out scarcity doesn’t just shape taste—it reshapes social structure too. Edit: Clarifying my background and historical context I want to briefly clarify a few points raised in the comments. First, about the writing itself. I’m a Korean writer with limited English proficiency, so I use AI tools to help translate my drafts into English. The original ideas and structure are mine, but the language is assisted. I didn’t realize that some formatting looked odd on certain devices, because it appeared normal on my Korean phone and PC. I’ve corrected that now and appreciate the feedback. Second, about the originality of the argument. This perspective comes from a very specific way of looking at Korean food history and social conditions. Even in Korea, it’s a relatively uncommon explanation. It’s not a standard framework you typically encounter in English discussions of Korean cuisine, which is why some parts may feel unfamiliar. Third, regarding comparisons with Chinese and Japanese food. Chinese cuisine has an enormous spectrum, and of course many elements overlap. Similarities with regions like Sichuan or Shandong are often mentioned, and that makes sense. However, historically China did not face the same level of agricultural constraint as Korea. Because of this relative abundance, the particular survival-driven combination of fermented paste, fermented vegetables, foraged greens (namul), and soup-with-rice (gukbap) did not emerge as a dominant everyday structure in the same way. Japan presents a different contrast. Even today, many Koreans visiting Japan notice that food ingredients are relatively inexpensive. While both countries are largely mountainous, Japan has significantly larger plains, and major cities like Tokyo and Osaka developed on those plains. In contrast, Seoul is a city surrounded by mountains. Historically, rice farming in Korea developed earlier in hilly terrain rather than wide plains, meaning people worked harder for less yield. These environmental differences shaped how food systems evolved. My point is not that Korean food is “better,” but that it developed under a distinct set of constraints, which produced a different internal logic. Thanks for reading and for engaging critically with the post. submitted by /u/Andrew_YH_Han to r/KoreanFood [link] [comments]

Korean food is not good compared to other Asian cuisines
Korea is extremely smart in how they use their music and TV shows to advertise their food. But really, it's the same thing over and over. Either their food is loaded with gochujang or their food isn't seasoned enough. I recently traveled to East Asia and enjoyed the food in each place (Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan) except for in Korea. Take tteokbokki, their very popular rice cakes, the gochujang overpowers any other flavor. It’s this strange thick sweet flavor. Their blood sausage (soondae) has no flavor and pales in comparison to, say, Vietnamese blood sausage. Korean mandu is nowhere as savoury or packed with flavor as Japanese gyoza. It's like they don't even season it. Same for kimbap and bibimbap. And their jjigae. Even their buckwheat noodles aren't good. I absolutely love spicy food, and Korean food is barely spicy even though they may claim it is. Their spice holds no candle to Indian or Thai spice. I’m Asian and absolutely love Asian food, but Korean food just isn’t it. submitted by /u/skyrimlo to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Korean food is pretty one-note
South Korea was one of the many places I lived when growing up. Before I moved there, everybody raved about the food. When people today find out I lived there, they also rave about the food and ask me about it. But... out of all the cuisines I've tried, Korean is by far my least favorite. People say it's flavorful but I think what they actually mean to say is that most dishes slap you in the face with garlic and gochujang. In my time living there, the food overwhelmingly fit into one of the following categories: 1) garlic and gochujang 2) bugolgi flavors 3) seaweed/soups with very mild seafood flavors Objectively, spice is not a flavor. It is a sensation. Take the spice out of Korean food, and you're left with really repetitive ingredients (the spice is repetitive anyways as well) and barely any seasoning. I've had to have tried at LEAST 20+ Korean dishes in South Korea itself and the grand total of dishes I thought were actually seasoned and flavorful are: sundubu-jjigae and army stew, which I think is Americanized Korean food. American food is on the list when it comes to least favorite cuisines, so you don't need to talk to me about bland American flavors. I know. But at least there's some diversity. I'm not some unadventurous pleeeb. Italian, Thai, Vietnamese, and Ethiopean are my favorites. Those cuisines are wildly flavorful in comparison. Edit: I somehow forgot to mention the prominence of fermented foods. I also should have just said "sesame oil" instead of "bugolgi flavors." Also, some people found out I am currently vegan, but I was not vegan when I lived there. Hence my ability to talk about bugolgi and the bland seafood. The only thing I was exposed to that I didn't try at least once were these little live squids they sell on the street that you're supposed to swallow whole while their tentacles thrash about. No. You don't have to be vegan to nope out of that experience lmao. submitted by /u/PoissonGreen to r/The10thDentist [link] [comments]

AITA for tricking my roommate into eating mozzarella using a Korean hotdog because I suspected him of eating my food?
I recently moved back into an apartment I shared with 3 roommates for college. I lived with them last year, and one of my roommates always stole my fucking food. His (fake) name is Tyler. Let me explain our food setup, we have one main fridge in the kitchen that we’ve quartered off, so each person gets an equal share of the fridge space including the freezer. It’s literally partitioned with like colored tape and dividers when applicable, so there’s no way you mistake someone else’s food for yours. We do this with the pantry too. But we do share, but only when asked. Anyways, last year, someone kept stealing my snacks/microwaveable foods. I suspected Tyler for many reasons, but I never got enough evidence to get him to outright admit. So I decided to do a little test, that was completely harmless unless he was the thief. A note about Tyler is that he absolutely hates mozzarella. It’s like a weirdly intense hate. Apparently he ate a ton of mozzarella sticks on a field trip as a kid and he got food poisoning, something like that. Bad history with mozzarella basically. So I bought these Korean hotdogs I saw on social media, it’s like a normal hotdog, but the upper half is mozzarella, and the bottom half is just like a normal hotdog sausage. Then I microwaved one for lunch the other day, ate the entire upper mozzarella half, and waited for Tyler to walk into the kitchen. I showed him the hotdog (now with only the sausage part visible) and talked at length about how delicious these new hotdogs I bought were. Another thing to note is that I threw away the box the hotdogs came in, which I do for all my frozen foods for space purposes anyways. That’s where it very visibly says it has a mozzarella half. The hotdogs were individually wrapped, with the ingredients printed on there in super fine print, so it was hard to see, but if he could’ve read the ingredients and seen the mozzarella. Later on around 2 am, I hear Tyler literally yelp from his room, so I run in, and behold he took a big fat bite of my hotdog. It was so funny, he tried to scream at me, but because the cheese was in his mouth it came out like “Motherella!!!”. He actually ended up puking onto his bed though, so I did end up feeling semi-bad for that. It was a loud incident, so my other two roommates woke up and witnessed the aftermath. We did tease him about it, like when he was panicking about cleaning the bed, we joked “O’ Motherella, just get your Fairy Goudamother to clean it for you.” I thought that was pretty funny, even though it was kinda cheesy. He did not. Anyways, Tyler is obviously flaming furious. He thinks it’s “my fault he puked” and that I “lied about my fake hotdogs to trap him into eating mozzarella”. I argue that I never said the hotdogs did NOT contain mozzarella, I just never mentioned they did and I didn’t make him eat it. He thinks I’m an asshole who should buy him new bedsheets, I think he’s an asshole for stealing my food. submitted by /u/themozzman to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
