This holiday season, I decided to sponsor a family through my children's school. I am doing 'Operation Santa' for a family of five; Mom, 9yo Boy, 6yo Girl, 3yo Girl, and 2yo Boy. I've already gotten them a tree with trimmings, all the big gifts, an outfit for each kid, and 90% of the stockings. I spent around $350 for each child. I still need to purchase the holiday meals and extra treats, and am arranging for non-physical extras ($500 gift card for groceries/gas/pharmacy, some fun money, and a photo session/prints with a wonderful family photographer locally here.) I have a 3 yo girl and a 10 mo boy, my SIL has a 9 month old boy. My SIL called yesterday and asked if her, her boyfriend(not her son’s dad), her baby, and the baby she was babysitting (Baby Z)could come stop by the house just for a minute. I said oh sure we’d love some cousin time! I made some baby friendly snacks for the kids and then they showed up soon after. Now when they came in she sat her son, and baby Z in their car seats still. Now within 2 minutes she pulled her son out of his car seat. She left baby Z in his car seat. She had this baby sitting in his car seat for 40 minutes before I said hey guys this baby smells like he has a dirty diaper and he’s getting fussy. I was already pissed they were leaving this baby in his car seat and not letting him out to play with the other babies. For the next 20 minutes her and her boyfriend argued back and forth saying “I’m not changing this baby, you do it”. Just bickering about who’s gonna change this little baby’s diaper that they were both getting paid to watch!!! I was livid and so glad I’ve never let them keep my son before and knew they would neverrrr watch my son just from watching this interaction. I ended up pulling this boy from his car seat and changing his diaper and getting him a new outfit. Baby Z had blood blisters on his butt and I had to put him In the bath to get the cakes up poop off because I didn’t want to scrub it with wipes since I knew it had to be so sore. I knew the babies mother but haven’t really had any conversations with her. Just knew her from around town. I stepped outside and called her on Facebook to tell her the situation. I said I would keep him here with me if she felt more comfortable with it since SIL and her boyfriend were straight up neglecting this baby. His mom thanked me and said she’d really appreciate it and she would come to my house to pick him up and pay me what they were supposed to pay SIL. I walked back in and they were getting ready to leave. I told SIL I had just talked with the babies mom and she’d feel better if he was left with me and my son. I told her go ahead and call her to double check but her and her boyfriend were not leaving with the baby. SIL has trashed me to every family member she can think of. Background: I’m a father of 3 amazing kiddos. Two girls (8,4) and a boy(2). One of the perks of being self-employed is that I make my own hours and can take my two youngest to my office with me while my wife works. I also kept my oldest before she started school. This is what we’ve always done. I have my kids with me almost every single day. It’s what works best for us. The only problem that I have are days like today. Today is a library day where they have all sorts of activities for kids. My wife is normally off on Friday’s and usually takes the kids, but today she had a meeting so I took them. Sometimes other moms are the worst. I’m a rather large (6’2 245lb), bald, bearded man. I get comments like, “Wow! You fixed their hair!”, and “I guess you’re babysitting today!”. During one of the crafts, (literally glue sticks and paper, not complicated) another mom tried to take over while I was helping my daughter. I had to tell her multiple times that we didn’t need her help. Dads are not bumbling buffoons. Dads are not incapable. Dads fix little girls hair. Dads coordinate outfits. Dads change diapers. Dads can be loving, kind, gentle, while still being masculine. Dads are not babysitting. They are parents. Edit: Holy crap! My little rant blew up over dinner. This is by far my biggest post. Thank you for all your kindness. To clarify, what’s mildly infuriating is the standards that both moms and dads face. My wife has never been praised for fixing a simple ponytail, or taking kids to the library or going grocery shopping, it’s just expected of her. When each of my children were born, I bought a set for my both my daughters and a set for my son's future wife. I also have my own personal collection of wedding jewelry that I have divided for daughters and future daughter in law. When my son came out as gay, I redistributed my collection to give them mainly to my daughters, but I kept a few sets in case my son ever had a daughter. Now that my son is getting married, his future husband is wondering about his gifts. While it is tradition for parents to give their future son/daughter in law a gift, since he is a man I got him a kara (which is a sikh bracelet usually made of steel but I got him one made from solid gold, and my son has a matching one). He told my son that he doesn't want a religious gift for his wedding and that he found it tacky. That is fine if he doesn't like it. But I was going through my collection the other day to pull out pieces I want to coordinate for my outfits so that I can order my outfits in advance, and he saw me and wanted to see everything and give input. I also showed him the sets I have saved if they have a daughter. He is insisting that he gets these sets first and then he will give them to their daughter if they have one. In particular, there is a pair of emerald and diamond earrings I got from my own paternal grandmother that I would like to give my son's daughter (if they have one). This is a pointless rant, but I’m so tired of baby clothes for little boys. No, I don’t want freaking trucks on my son’s outfit. I don’t want tractors on them. Can you just give me a classy print or something? It seems like there are so many cute girls clothes but the boys clothes are basically all the same. So I (26F) am expecting my first daughter with my husband (29M) in September. I grew up in a moderately religious household with pretty strictly defined gender roles. As in, since I was a girl, I had chores around the house while my younger brother did not have to do anything. I don't talk to my parents for a variety of reasons (going on year 5 now) so they do not know I am pregnant. Both my aunts and grandparents were very supportive of me leaving my household and as such have been my main family. Being 6 months pregnant now, people have started to give gifts and I am very grateful for them. We have decided that we don't want our daughter to be surrounded by pink everything with only girl things. So we have made a conscious effort to include traditionally 'boy' outfits and toys like dinosaurs and cars. We have told people that any gender items would be accepted and if it's getting too much 'pink' we have gone out to balance a bit (getting a green jacket or something). My younger aunt has taken great offense to this because 'boys are boys and girls are girls'. And she is a very verbal and loud person and has let us know several times her opinions. She has two boys. At my baby shower my older aunt gifted us a book called 'goodnight construction site' and a little stuffed truck. My younger aunt went on a tirade about how we are somehow making our daughter trans and not allowing her to be a girl. And she's a loud person so of course her saying this was more like a yell, and in front of my VERY liberal in-laws who are very supportive of our choice. Pregnancy hormones took over and I grabbed the toy, gave it to my younger aunt and asked her what part of the penis was needed to operate this toy truck. She yelled that's not what she meant and left. The rest of the baby shower went fine but it was a bit awkward after. Since then she has been blowing up Facebook where a bunch of people agree with her that I am making my daughter trans and have been telling me that I was an asshole. The rest of my think what we are doing is fine, but that I shouldn't have handled it that way. So was I an asshole? Edited to add: wow this really blew up, I was not anticipating this much response. To answer some questions: I do not care if she ends up loving pink and unicorns etc, we will get her them then. I just was trying to balance out the sheer amount of pink items we were getting from friends and family. Almost every single gift has been heavily pink or girl influenced. To the point where she would not be dressed in anything but pink if we did not go out and buy some more boy things. I also am generally not a person who argues. But I feel like a bit of an Ahole because I intentionally said this as deadpan serious as I could and with the intent to embarrass her in front of our family members present. My delivery and question did have the intended effect and she went quite red before leaving. This was also the first transphobic comment I've ever heard out of her mouth. While we all grew up quite conservative, my older aunt coming out 27 years ago really changed my family's perspective. My grandparents have changed from what they previously viewed and my aunt was always supportive of my other aunt.
