Best protectant for this "Live-edge" wood slab when using for outdoor dining table?
I live in central Texas and am making an outdoor table using this fake " Saman live edge butcher block" to go under my gazebo. I'm aware it's not ideal wood for outdoors but I got it for less than $70 and already welded a set of legs for it. What would be the best protective coating or oil that I could use that would protect it from the weather. It'll be mostly protected from sun and rain but still gets a little bit depending on wind/time of day. I'm ok with refinishing every once in a while and would like it to look more natural vs. a thick spar or epoxy coating. Any advice for the protectant? Any advice for the build all together? submitted by /u/Stealingtoasters to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

FINALLY - It’s 99% Done!
Before ➡️ After 📍Bucks County, PA, US All details provided below! 👇 Do you remember when I was a complete noob and came on here with soo many questions? I basically just had the design pictures and thought I’d be back here much sooner… My goal with this post is to give back to a community that has helped me so much throughout the design and renovation process. And to help you avoid mistakes I made along the way. Before: The original 1995 Toll Brothers kitchen complete with a desk, cheap and dilapidated pickled pink cabinets that were falling off the walls, corian countertops (which honestly were still in perfect shape), a very slippery and shiny tile floor (also in excellent shape for its age), and a dangerous gas range on the island 1” from the edge with no vent to the outside. 😬 After & Details: Renovation: 0/10. It was supposed to take 4-6 weeks. It took 1.5 YEARS (Dec 2024) from when we signed the contract and 7.5 months (Oct 2025) from breaking ground. It turns out we hired conmen for contractors whose idea of communication and project management was nonexistent… Who haven’t shown their face more than a handful of times, ditching their crew with me, who is NOT a kitchen expert, to problem solve on the fly without any safety net. The beverage station (tall wooden furniture-looking piece) may never be finished at this rate because one of the head honchos is the only one who can install pocket doors. There was no movement at all for months until we threatened legal action. They stopped working the day I went into labor at the hospital because we weren’t there to stay on top of them. They made the crew do dangerous things like move our refrigerator with straps, and hoist that gargantuan garden window to install it on one of the coldest days of the year. On top of the stress of the noise and dust, I was heavily pregnant and went into labor 1 month in. 😣 It was a nightmare and added to my traumatic early postpartum experience. Please learn from our mistake: if you choose this kind of shit company, with no designer on staff and no accountability, you’re screwed! We had no leverage. They get 50% of the money up front and got all of it 5 months before finishing the jobs. We do enjoy it now, due to my hard work and choices, and try not to associate my and the crew’s hard work with the owner’s despicable treatment of us. Thank goodness they finally hired a designer to work with me - she is a fairy godmother who stayed true to my wishes for the design, and is someone I’d recommend to anyone! They wouldn’t pay her so it came out of my pocket and I’d happily do it again. Her software was outstanding for visualizing every detail. By the way, the dust? It all comes from the electricians cutting into the drywall to install wafer lights. They were the only crew that didn’t keep our plastic drapes up while they did their work and we learned the hard way just how disruptive dust can be when it settles onto every surface in the entire downstairs. Unfortunately it was avoidable and they just didn’t care enough to help us out and secure some tape. Dog station: 10/10 The dog bowl filler was hard to figure out but we finally went with the following setup that is just far enough out that it doesn’t spill or splash yet won’t poke the dog in the face (she’s tall). The handle is on the other side of the island due to their mis-measuring lol it’s quirky but it works fine. I specifically got the filler and handle separate because I didn’t want the dog or baby having access to the tap and accidentally flooding the kitchen. Index Bath - Folding Spout Faucet in brushed gold. https://indexbath.com/products/folding-spout-basin-faucet-wall-mounted-bathroom-tap-concealed-faucet • Upper Cabinets & Pantries: 8/10 J&K B5 in color Pure (white) - they kinda scratch easily, but they were so inexpensive and they are painted and can be touched up so it doesn’t matter. Soft close works beautifully and they were able to do a custom size hood (NOTE: a 36” hood will not fit a 36” insert!). The tall pantries are cabinets on top, all pull outs on bottom. Basically tripled the amount of storage we used to have. • Lower Cabinets, Island, & Beverage station: 10/10 Cabinet Joint/Conestoga Cabinets, Cherry, Saddle Stain, RutlandMT reverse G-cove/beveled shaker door style Only went with drawers on the bottom except for the kitchen sink cabinet, a couple by the ovens, and on the far side of the island. Obsessed with how easy drawers are compared to cabinets. Cabinet Joint was a Reddit find!! Thanks, everyone! They were a delight to work with from start to finish and we are in love with the cabinets. The cabinets feel substantial and we had zero issues with any missing or damaged pieces, felt like a miracle compared to the debacle that was the renovation process. • Quartzite: 11/10 Onur Marble & Granite, “Calacatta Boheme.” Natural stone will always be worth it for me - I am stunned by its beauty every day. In order to have enough slabs for the project we opted for honed backsplash and dog station, and polished countertops. The honed is reminiscent of marble, and I love cleaning the polished countertops, personal preference. They go great together!! Has movement, depth, and crystallization that we love!! We applied Bulletproof sealer from StoneTech once so far and will be reapplying annually. We also baby it just in case, using trivets and being sure not to leave oil or water rings. • Garden Window: 100/10 Ventana. Not having a screen on the largest pane facing my backyard makes birdwatching and enjoying my garden so easy, a dream come true. 🤩 Plus it fits my husband’s orchid collection, and lets a ton of natural light into the kitchen where it was pretty dark before. • Sink: 11/10 Kohler Whitehaven 36” cast iron farmhouse sink, bought for a steal brand new/open box from Facebook Marketplace. The single bowl size, the offset drain, and the sloped profile with custom grates on bottom is a delight. I’m seriously lucky that I get to be the one to do the dishes. • Floor Tile: 9.5/10 Edward Martin matte porcelain 24x24 in Amani Bronze & Calacatta. I am a fan of tile in kitchens, especially because it doesn’t compete with the wood lower cabinets. Besides how it looks, we get compliments about how soft it feels to walk on and the dog no longer slips on it. Docked 0.5 points because we have a lived-in home, and the white ones show dust and paw prints. • Grout (thin lines): 10/10 Mapei Sahara Beige (5011) perfect match for the Amani Bronze tiles, almost unnoticeable. • New Appliances: 11/10 Signature Kitchen Suite. Couldn’t be happier with all of them!! The microwave is insanely large and easy for both me and my husband to use at 5’2” and 6’. We host pizza parties now and bake the best cookies on our pizza and baking stones from Pampered Chef. Highly recommend the Misen nitrided ‘nonstick’ carbon steel pans for the induction range. Le Crueset pots work on it as well as my Our Place pot. [x] 36” Hood insert (SKSHI3601S). [x] 36” Induction Cooktop (SKSIT3601GE). [x] 30” Speed Oven Wall Oven combo with 5-in-1 Advantium Oven (SKSCV3002S). • Faucet: 9.5/10 Brizo Artesso SmartTouch articulating with finished hose. A splurge and LONG lead times, but so worth it! I liked the look of it but the touch to activate feature and the fact that it keeps the water warm are both surprisingly convenient. Docked 0.5 point because the gold color is a bit odd and shows every water drop and stain. • Hardware: 10/10 the jewelry of the kitchen. TopKnobs (purchased through Wayfair) - Honey Bronze color Kara Knobs, Bar Pulls, and Somerset Cup Pulls ; Rejuvenation Classic Large Cabinet latches in Heritage Brass ; Delta air switch, perfect match for the Brizo faucet because they’re the same company (Amazon) • Pendant Lights: 10/10 Hinkley Oliver Transitional Style w/ etched opal glass in Heritage Brass ; Rejuvenation drum from Marketplace. Will never have a problem with harsh lighting or cleaning/maintenance due to the frosted glass and drum filter. submitted by /u/CommercialPopular626 to r/kitchenremodel [link] [comments]

New countertops installed and I hate the edge
First time home buyer, and feeling very naive. Hired contractor to install black walnut countertops that he sourced. He sent pictures along the way but never or the live edge and never occurred to me to ask. I don’t mind a few, but I hate how many worm holes there are, and feel like it cheapens the look but he tells me there is nothing he can do about it. Is that true? It makes it more rustic than I wanted and I’m just not a fan at all of the side. submitted by /u/vino-drunk to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

What size moulding to edge plywood countertop?
Have taken the plunge and started to make some built in cabinets for our living room. The current plan (although it may change, if this isn't viable) is to make the countertop out of 18mm baltic birch blywood (like the rest of the cabinets) and then affix some wood moulding to the edges, so the layers aren't visible once painted. The only problem is that the attractive mouldings I've found are either 20mm (https://www.wrp-timber-mouldings.co.uk/moulding-profile/3711/in_profile/ogee-and-bead) or 16mm (https://www.wrp-timber-mouldings.co.uk/moulding-profile/193/in_profile/astragal) wide. Would using either of these be a bad idea? We would either be left with a 1mm overhang on each side, which I assume I'd have to flatten out with a flush router bit (I currently only have a plunge router, but could buy a trim router if needed), or 1mm too short (and I don't have an informed opinion as to whether that would be noticable!) Any input very gratefully received! submitted by /u/agreatcatsby to r/BeginnerWoodWorking [link] [comments]

Overwhelmed and just fell thru the floor - need to vent
I’m majorly stressed about finishing this second floor full bath project in the next few weeks, but just accidentally fell through the floor joists and through the drywall ceiling below and just need to vent this process… For backstory, we bought this house under the impression that we’d repair some drywall and busted waterlines before moving in and then slowly work our way through the house renovating and updating but we’re now two plus years into major renovations that included jacking the house in two areas, replacing a large portion of sill plate, reinforcing one side of the foundation along with some underpinning, sistering every floor joist on the first floor, reinforcing the center beam with an LVL including replacing the posts, adding new headers to doors and windows, leveling the second floor dips by jacking while sistering floor joists where needed, all new electrical on the first floor, new electric panel, all new plumbing - supply, drain lines AND sewer lateral inside plus outside repair, and eventually drywall and priming. We have a temporary kitchen of hodge-podge cabinets and pieced together countertops, a second hand fridge, etc. The first floor bathroom is the only space that is 90% finished. The house functions and we’ve been living here for a year while continuing the work. This second floor bathroom will be the second full bath in the house and only my second bathroom build ever. We’re on as tight of a budget as possible and have been buying as many materials secondhand as possible. We bought a new glass frameless shower door for this bathroom for 75% off retail bc it edged up not fitting for someone else. I’ve had the shower framed and ready for a year but have had to prioritize as we’re working in almost every room of the house all at once. I had previously framed the shower in based on the architecture of the room - i.e. edge of the dormer and sloped wall in the rest of the bathroom but once we bought the glass door I had to reframe to accommodate. Fast forward to this year and I found a natural stone dealer going out of business that was liquidating their inventory. We ended up buying a few different marble tiles at $3 sqft, which was a steal. Earlier this month my focus became this bathroom with the first item being that the weight of the marble isn’t going to exceed our dead load. We had already sistered the floor joists in this space and feel good about the weight now that we’ve added additional metal plate reinforcement to the floor joists the drain pipes run through. I moved on to finishing prep on the walls in order to install the waterproofing board and I realize the marble tile is significantly thicker than I planned for when adjusting the framing for the glass door… so I’m backtracking again on the framing to accommodate thicker tile and have had to get really creative to make this work. The maximum width of the framing leaves me with less than .25” tolerance for the glass enclosure and that’s after going light on the thin set and thinning two sections of waterproofing board to allow the studs to recess into it .25” behind the marble door jamb. All this to say that this project is exhausting me and now today instead of getting the insulation back into the floor (for a little soundproofing but more so helping reduce heat transfer between floors) and screwing the subfloor back down, now I have a giant hole in the ceiling below to patch. I’m an AuADHDer and major perfectionist that plans and researches until I can visualize each step of the project, failing isn’t something I do much of and I don’t manage it well, so crashing through the ceiling and creating more work for me and my bf is harder to take than the scrapes from the actual fall. And yes, I’m overall fine physically - one leg is pretty scratched up but I straddled a joist in the fall, so only my feet and legs went though rather than falling the ten feet to the floor below. submitted by /u/Livid-Wrongdoer9708 to r/centuryhomes [link] [comments]

Thinking about doing a 2.5-3 inches (not cm’s) edge for our kitchen countertop, any reason why I shouldn’t?
We live in a luxury condo unit and are remodeling the home. We’re going to have a lot of leftover material from our quartz slabs, so we figured we would go with a more modern look and make the edges extra thick. My wife and I really like the look but if anyone has any opinions about it, feel free to share. I know in some very large kitchens, people will go even thicker. We were thinking of following the design through to our bathrooms as well (maybe a little bit less thick than the kitchen). submitted by /u/skywalkersdream to r/CounterTops [link] [comments]

AITAH For Deleting My Girlfriend's Sims Save Files?
This was first posted in r/AITAH by u/Jiffy_Biscuitz The updates were posted by u/Organic-Ad-2 to her own page OriginalPost Apr 22nd, 2024 Let's just start by saying that I (24M) love my girlfriend, "Aaliyah", (20F) very much. She's a super hard working girl, and she spends a lot of her time on classes trying to get the highest grades possible for applying to nursing school in the near future. When she's not doing that, she's doing chores or cutting down on her ever growing to-do list. And when she's not doing THAT she's spending 2 hours a day playing the Sims. This is where the problem comes in. After all the stuff she does, Aaliyah doesn't have as much time to spend with me as she could. She's a perfectionist too, so when she's doing the more serious stuff like school, she puts in more effort than necessary, which is time consuming. It really got to me that even knowing this, she'll spend so much time on the Sims. It's something frivolous she's doing when we already only get so little time together. She's also an adult, so essentially playing digital dolls almost every day is kind of something she ought to grow out of by now. I decided to step in and have her cut back on this. I obviously didn't delete the whole game, but I figured deleting the little save files she was working on would deter her from spending so much time on it. That decision backfired tremendously. When she logged on to her game she thought there was some glitch going on and kept restarting it until I explained to her that I removed the saves. She absolutely flipped out on me, saying she'd been playing in that save file since like 2017 and I had ruined years of game progress. (Sims isn't even a goaled game???) I told her she was overreacting, because she still HAS the game and she could just remake her same little characters if it mattered so much, but it doesn't need to and maybe now she can focus on more adult interests, like loved ones. Basically she left immediately, saying she was so stupid to leave her gaming laptop at my place, and now she won't answer my calls. I know that this is a total overreaction, but I started to feel a little bad once I realized it may not be as easy to redo her characters as I initially thought. So, AITA for deleting my girlfriend's Sims saves? TL;DR: My girlfriend is obsessed with the Sims, so to deter her from playing it so much I deleted her save files. She blew up at me. AITAH? Aaliyah responds back Did you really think I wouldn't find this post? Did you really think I wouldn't see how you've been talking about me? I shudder to think what you've said in what you deleted. Why don't you tell them the real story? About how you not only deleted the save files, but also hammered the backup thumb drive so hard there's a dent on your countertop now while I cried for you to stop? Why don't you tell them about how you tag along to my SI group after Bio because you don't want me to be out of your sight? Why don't you tell them about how my best friend who's so-called "in love" with me literally lives in another state and only visits once or twice a year? Why don't you tell them about how when my mother was sick a few months ago, you were blowing up my line all day every day for attention knowing I was her primary caregiver 24/7? Why are you telling them you work full-time or that you manage a grocery store when you part-time manage the fast food place inside it? I want you to fucking take this to heart when I say this, but I have genuinely been so much worse off for knowing you. You've destroyed my self esteem with your constant criticisms of what I enjoy, you've controlled me in every way for as long as I've known you, you don't understand boundaries or when no means no, your racist fucking family treats me like DOG SHIT, and your friends are equally racist punk bitch assholes. You ruined something I've spent YEARS of my life growing up with and I could never bring myself to forgive and forget that, no matter how much love I've poured into you. I hate you for what you did to me, and for what you've been doing. I mean that. I'm gonna make this so, so crystal clear since you didn't understand it the first time: WE ARE THROUGH. GO FUCK YOURSELF. Placeholder Update Apr 25th, 2024 Hi there! "Aaliyah" here from the infamous post about my Sims 4 saves getting deleted! I just wanted to put a little placeholder update on my page for anyone who's read that post. Please note that I have turned off the ability to search my username in app because, although I did want people to hear the whole story at first, the social media response has been a bit overwhelming. I'm just a regular person and I didn't know this would get publicized to this extent, so please be kind. All that said, update/missing info here: Our Ages: For one, there was some confusion about when my ex and I got together. We knew each other all our lives since our families are close, but we started dating when I was 12 and he was 16. We actually have a 5 year age gap (I'm newly 20 and he turns 25 this year). Hope that clears it up! Missing Info: Not only did he delete the saves and clear the recycling bin, he pulled out my backup drive and smashed it with a hammer once he realized I was upset that he'd done the first two things. He lied about not knowing it was such a detailed game, because I talked to him about it tons of times before. This was not a matter of spending time together - we regularly spent hours of every day with each other. He would insist to come along to any class or class related activity that he wouldn't get kicked out of, like Bio study group. I gave him as much attention as I possibly could, but it was never, ever enough. Summer is in just 3 weeks, so we would've had time then. He was just being awful to me. He is a generally jealous, overprotective, condescending person, he pressured me into sexual activities throughout our relationship, and his friends and family were all incredibly racist to me. It's past time for him to be gone from my life, and I'm still coming to terms with all the ways he has wrecked me... Clearing Up Some Questions: My 7 year save existed across three laptops over time, so those who were skeptical of it being able to survive on one for so long were right! I did have a password on my gaming laptop - he memorized it to get in. He mentioned that I said I was dumb for leaving my laptop at his place - I said that because he's done something similar before when I left my phone unattended. He went through it, promised never to again, only for me to find out months later that he'd been logged into my Instagram account and was reading my messages daily. Some people wondered why I have no mention of him on my page - that's because I was always on edge with him going through my phone, so I deleted anything about him that I'd post. In my comment history 6 months ago, there are two replies I made under a post about him forcing me to kiss him at stoplights. I'm sorry that this is the only remnant of proof that I've been with him, I tried to cover my tracks to avoid his anger. Placeholder Update: I was too anxious to try to retrieve the lost saves myself, so I'm going to a local tech shop in a few days to see what the professionals can do, and the laptop will remain off until then. I've looked into a restraining order recently, and ultimately it looks like I won't be able to do much as of now but collect evidence and get cameras installed around my home. I don't go out in public alone anymore, and I am never without a trusted person. I appreciate all the people who have felt my hurt with me and/or sent me well wishes! I ask that no one else offers me money, I won't accept it. Lastly, this is my lived experience, not just internet drama, so please be considerate.❤ MY SAVES ARE RESTORED!!! May 2nd, 2024 That's it!!! Sorry for taking a while to tell everyone, I went to a local tech shop a few days ago and they helped me to recover everything!!! I hadn't had the chance to update due to finals season, I'm typing this on my way to class!🥲 But YESSS, for anyone still wondering, I got everything back!!!❤ I am not the original poster. I'm making a live edge mesquite countertop for a client.
Roast me or give me encouragement, I don't believe in failure unless I can see it coming. This is happening, so if anyone has some useful information I'm happy to hear it. The brackets are made from 3/16" steel and will be recessed within the bottom of the slabs and attached to the top of a pony wall, accounting for wood movement accordingly. Someone tell me what I should lose sleep over, this project has been going swimmingly and thats the only thing keeping me up tonight. I feel like I could be missing something. Pictures of samples and inspiration included. ~cheers submitted by /u/woodnotwork to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

Best finish for live edge countertop
I’m using a slab of Ash live edge for a breakfast bar & looking for more of a matte finish but i’m clueless on what steps to take. Should I use stain or just oils/wax? I’d love it to look like the one in the photo. Any help is greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/Justchecking130992 to r/woodworking [link] [comments]

Need help with pine live edge table and countertop
Hi all, i’m not a total epoxy newbie but I need help! I want to take some giant white pine live edge slabs and make one into a dinner table and the others into actual countertops on top of cabinets. I think I can lump these together in the same questions because obviously good will be on both but I guess more so the countertops since sometime you are preparing food on them. My main question is what do I do to the pine to seal it so that bubbles don’t constantly form during the flood coat? Also, I’d like to “embed” some thin metal art in the epoxy (on top of the wood) and so I am thinking the flood coat needs to be fairly thick, but not sure how to accomplish this since it is a live edge with bark on. Any help/advice will be appreciated. I am attaching pics of some epoxy stuff I have done in the past. submitted by /u/TNmountainman2020 to r/epoxy [link] [comments]

How much would be fair to discount a quartz countertop for the wrong edge finish?
I just had my quartz countertop installed that costed me $9000. The install went well but I chose a square finish (as per my quote), however they mistakenly did a pencil finish. I’m not going to have them change it but i feel like i deserve some compensation for their error. What would be fair for both parties? submitted by /u/SpanishTuxedo to r/HomeImprovement [link] [comments]
