I’m struggling with how to design my living room. I started out with layout 1. But I decided to push the couch up because I wanted the layout to feel more intentional (rather than have all furniture pushed up against the walls). That’s layout 2. For layout 3, I moved the sideboard to the back wall so that I could possibly incorporate more seating to the window side. My current couch is a little deep (40 inches). Im looking to replace it with something less deep. But also considering changing for and L shaped sectional or sectional with chaise. Would love any suggestions! Also, acknowledging the TV is too high but I’m not looking to move it from its current location above the fireplace. This is an AI-assisted application where the system design and UX are implemented manually, with AI used as a runtime component. I wanted an AI assistant that doesn’t live in the cloud or inside a browser. So I built a small self-hosted system that runs locally and exists as a mirror in my room. You talk to it by voice, it responds by voice, and then it fades back into the background. The idea was to give a local LLM a physical presence, not another UI. It’s running on my own hardware (Raspberry Pi + local LLM stack), and the whole thing is open source. It’s still early and rough in places, but the core interaction works. Hey Reddit, I have recently moved into my own place and my living room currently has the exact “just moved in yesterday… six weeks ago” aesthetic. It’s basically a grey couch, a wooden coffee table, wooden floors (slide 1) and the crushing awareness that I am now responsible for making this space look like an adult lives here. So I decided the first step toward adulthood is a rug. Naturally, instead of picking one like a normal person, I spiralled and ended up with a long list of 17 options from Ruggable. Please don’t judge me, or do, but also help. I’m 30-ish, want the room to feel warm and cozy, but also like I’ve vaguely got my life together. Eventually I’ll add more stuff (art, plants, maybe personality), but for now I need a rug that won’t make future-me say “why did you do that?” Which one would you pick for this space? Bonus points if you roast my current minimalist hostage-situation setup. Good morning to everyone and your TVs. I'm back with a few quick changes. I got a lot of good advice. Let me clear up a few common questions. My family is small, I don't want to say exactly how small for privacy reasons but I'll just say that we went from a two parent household to one fairly recently. We are blessed with many extended family and friends and I love having the space to host. I was in the military for a long time and have collected furniture along the way. This is my forever home and the first I've ever really put serious thought into how I want to use my rooms and design for function, as many of you said. No, we don't have a TV in the living room. No, I don't want a TV in the living room. We like to read, listen to music, chat, play casual board games or cards, do crossword puzzles. When we watch tv, we have a room just for that and we will put on a movie and focus on that. Homes where the TV is always on feel buzzy and uncomfortable to me. Now on to the real changes: Many of you suggested moving the couch 90 degrees. It's not something I can do on my own but I measured it out, if I moved both the couch and then put the low bookshelf behind it would leave about 42 inches of walkway. Feels a bit tight to me but I'll give a go when I have hands to help. A lot of you hated the loungers and honestly I did too. It's hard for me to get rid of quality furniture, but they just don't fit. They are handmade of rosewood and a thick ox leather and I promise I will find a good home for them. They are making a guest appearance in the dining room for now. The potato chip chairs are staying for now, but have been repurposed more conversationally. I had another Domino Mobler chair in the bedroom which is cozier and brought that down. The red tassels were a Chinese New Year decoration that we left up for fun. I will be taking the drapes recommendations; many of you suggested green / olive / emerald as a new accent color and I'll look for that in a warm texture and tone. I did not de-clutter my shelves. This is room not meant for display and the books are disorganized because we will frequently pull them off to read; it's a feature not a bug. The coffee table that was obstructing movement is also stored away for now and that has made the biggest difference. The first thing I did was move away all the blocking furniture and I found that I was immediately more invited to sit on my couch. I'm sorry to those of you who don't like the view, but it's DesignMyRoom, not DesignMyNeighborhood. This was interesting and overall helpful in motivating me to make some overdue changes. A sincere thank you to everyone who had thoughtful comments; I will try to update again when I make a few of the longer lead changes for furniture and decorations. Let me just kick things off by saying I hate the floor but we're renting and tough luck. We regret how closed off and dark the overall living room has become. We are ready to repaint, refurnish, etc. But this our second attempt at overhauling our living room and frankly we just suck at interior design. We don't know what makes a living room comfy and bright and homely. I (29F) recently allowed my sister-in-law Tina (31F) to help redecorate my living room as she's an aspiring interior designer trying to build her portfolio. I gave her full creative control over everything except my antique bookcases which hold collections I've been building for years. When Tina finished, the living room looked amazing overall. But she rearranged all the furniture including moving the bookcases to a different wall "for better feng shui." I immediately moved them back because her new placement ruined the organized system I have for my books/knickknacks. Tina got upset when she saw I had changed the bookcases back. She thinks I undermined her decor vision and didn't appreciate the thoughtful new layout. My brother agrees and said I was rude overriding Tina’s work. But in my view, I never agreed to let her touch the bookcases. Plus their setup is meticulously curated. Am I wrong for altering the one part of the makeover I wasn’t on board with to begin with? I still thanked Tina for her amazing work overall. I was so confused about her reaction, I mean its my apartment after all and I just gave her a chance to build her portfolio... AITA for refusing to keep my sister-in-law's new bookcase arrangement as part of her living room makeover for me? My family says I disrespected her design expertise.
