I need all the advice and input anyone can give. I feel the pieces of furniture in my place are beautiful, but I draw a blank on how to incorporate anything else into my space. I’m talking rug, roman shade color/print, couch pillow prints & color, making the blanket on the blanket rack match. (—the rack is slightly not my thing but it hides the cords so I deal in the meantime) The wall right by the TV is so bare but I don’t want to put another rectangular item there. Maybe a sconce but thats small. It just seems like the obvious choice to put art work there and I want something more design forward. Whatever the heck I mean by that? I don’t even know. I’ve contemplated a dark burgundy rug, but is that a terrible idea. I don’t know what would mix well with that, and I’m scared to pigeon hole myself into not being able to work with many colors. I want something flexible BUT all my upholstery in my house is a light color so I really want to add some character and something more grand. But of course, I have commitment issues. Any insight, direction, comments, would probably help me sleep better at night! I’m really trying to convince myself I can do it myself and I don’t need an interior designer. Okay I have shown him and tried three different layouts at this point and from looking at the comments here. My decorating decisions are just a mess and I shouldn't bother anymore my colors sucks my art is horrible etc. I'm just going to move my shit to my office do what I want in there and he can deal with the rest of the house. I'm over it. Thank you all for opening my eyes and trying to give me advice I really appreciate it. And don't worry I'll put everything back to white walls they were bright blue when we moved in so at least I got that win. Reposting because a bunch of the photos didn't post. My husband is deployed and I have been doing all the moving in and decorating on my own. He hates all of it. The paint, the color (he didn't want to pick any on his own and the 20 I swatched he hated all of), the wall design that I did. The placement of stuff on the shelves (Needs more clutter). I think I'm going to deal with most of that when he gets back. He can do his own thing with it and pick out colors. He also hates the furniture placement. He said the couches are too close together (we also never use the front door we go in and out of the garage so the couch can block it I just don't like how it looks). He doesn't like the dark brown shelf where it is behind the couch. It was in front of the sliding glass door but since we have dogs I was having to dust it every other day so it's not going back there. I do have another corner piece I could add on to the couch and they can be put in any configuration. I'm just blanking on what to do with all of it. Any help? Edit to add: Glare and viewing angle of the TV is an issue with a lot of the suggestions. New furniture can not be purchased for a while as other house repairs (in the 20k -30k range) are taking priority. We need lots of seating as we host large BBQs every Saturday for 8-12 people. Also we have two large dogs that both have to be in the couch with us or they have tantrums lol. There is also no space for a dining table in the house so meals will be eaten in the living room so a coffee table is a must. We have a second one that is much larger. I have tried another arraignment with the TV on the other wall check the comments for the newreading. Also can't really mount the TV the walls are not dry wall. I sometimes see questions about room plans the villagers actually use. And where they won’t switch the furniture you gave them when they are cooking or crafting. This is my go-to room plan that always works. The villager can walk freely in their own house and use the appliances. I post basic pics below. Of course I switch around everything a lot, especially on the bed / living room side. So far it has always worked and they never switched something! Hi everyone! I've lived in this room for about all my life. The layout has been "hardcoded" into my brain for so long that I can no longer see the possibilities. I'll likely be moving out in the foreseeable future, so I want to treat this room as a design laboratory. I want to learn from my mistakes (or successes!) before I move. I'm looking for radical perspectives-don't be afraid to suggest moving everything. The Space: Dimensions: ~4.5m x 3.2m / 14.8ft x 10.5ft. The Gear: Standing desk (160x80cm), bed (210x100cm), hammock, and various IKEA storage like PAX and Billy. The Goal: Studying, Work from home, sleeping, and relaxing, as well as storage. I'd love your take on: Layout: I've stuck to "furniture against the walls" for 20 years. How would you break this up to improve the flow? Zoning: How would you visually separate the "office" from the "bedroom" in a space this size? Color/Lighting: Is the yellow wall and warm lighting helping or hurting the space? Proportions: Does the furniture size make sense for the room, or is it too "cluttered"? I’m struggling with how to design my living room. I started out with layout 1. But I decided to push the couch up because I wanted the layout to feel more intentional (rather than have all furniture pushed up against the walls). That’s layout 2. For layout 3, I moved the sideboard to the back wall so that I could possibly incorporate more seating to the window side. My current couch is a little deep (40 inches). Im looking to replace it with something less deep. But also considering changing for and L shaped sectional or sectional with chaise. Would love any suggestions! Also, acknowledging the TV is too high but I’m not looking to move it from its current location above the fireplace. Back in the time of the most recent zombie apocalypse I was stuck in a very cramped home office space and was looking for some place near by where I could establish as a larger, grander office space. After 30 years it felt like I had outgrown my small home office and wanted something more. It started with a completely empty mill space with 11 foot ceilings and a wide open great room. Over the months I purchased furniture one piece at a time to fit the vibe of the bricks and old 1800s beams. I had to actually take time to exist in the space in order to figure out the best way to break apart the single room into useable sections. Living space, dining, work, entertainment, kitchen all sharing one big room. The devil is in the details here. Every single element was selected just with this space in mind. I use this as my office, and when I'm not there I leverage it for short term rentals which offsets the cost. It's located overlooking a waterfall in southern New Hampshire. Good morning to everyone and your TVs. I'm back with a few quick changes. I got a lot of good advice. Let me clear up a few common questions. My family is small, I don't want to say exactly how small for privacy reasons but I'll just say that we went from a two parent household to one fairly recently. We are blessed with many extended family and friends and I love having the space to host. I was in the military for a long time and have collected furniture along the way. This is my forever home and the first I've ever really put serious thought into how I want to use my rooms and design for function, as many of you said. No, we don't have a TV in the living room. No, I don't want a TV in the living room. We like to read, listen to music, chat, play casual board games or cards, do crossword puzzles. When we watch tv, we have a room just for that and we will put on a movie and focus on that. Homes where the TV is always on feel buzzy and uncomfortable to me. Now on to the real changes: Many of you suggested moving the couch 90 degrees. It's not something I can do on my own but I measured it out, if I moved both the couch and then put the low bookshelf behind it would leave about 42 inches of walkway. Feels a bit tight to me but I'll give a go when I have hands to help. A lot of you hated the loungers and honestly I did too. It's hard for me to get rid of quality furniture, but they just don't fit. They are handmade of rosewood and a thick ox leather and I promise I will find a good home for them. They are making a guest appearance in the dining room for now. The potato chip chairs are staying for now, but have been repurposed more conversationally. I had another Domino Mobler chair in the bedroom which is cozier and brought that down. The red tassels were a Chinese New Year decoration that we left up for fun. I will be taking the drapes recommendations; many of you suggested green / olive / emerald as a new accent color and I'll look for that in a warm texture and tone. I did not de-clutter my shelves. This is room not meant for display and the books are disorganized because we will frequently pull them off to read; it's a feature not a bug. The coffee table that was obstructing movement is also stored away for now and that has made the biggest difference. The first thing I did was move away all the blocking furniture and I found that I was immediately more invited to sit on my couch. I'm sorry to those of you who don't like the view, but it's DesignMyRoom, not DesignMyNeighborhood. This was interesting and overall helpful in motivating me to make some overdue changes. This was part of a whole-house remodel we did here in Seattle, WA. We are the designers and builders. We brought most of the home down to the foundation in order to completely change the design and layout of the home. The centerpiece was this huge main living area, focused on indoor-outdoor living and an open layout. Folding and sliding doors/windows open up completely (both the kitchen window and the living room doors) to bridge this space with the big backyard. Tons of places to sit and entertain, including the dining room table, kitchen island, living room furniture, and bar seating outside across from the kitchen window. So I've been doing woodworking for a living for 10 years already, and every piece I made was made as clients wished — I would be lying if I'd say I loved all furniture I have made. One year ago I took a big step — full business rebranding and new concept: only hardwood furniture, no plywood or MDF, crisp joints, minimalistic timeless design (so furniture won't look outdated after 50+ years of use) and only original design, no copies or imitations. But she rearranged all the furniture including moving the bookcases to a different wall "for better feng shui." I immediately moved them back because her new placement ruined the organized system I have for my books/knickknacks. Tina got upset when she saw I had changed the bookcases back. I (26M) recently moved into a 650 sq ft high rise apartment from almost a 1000 sq ft midrise apartment (I was on the 2nd foor with some natural light, now I am on the 14th floor with lots of natural light) so I had to make some compromises on space, furniture and style.
