When I hear the word 'bathe' it conjures the idea of soapy lather being applied with friction to the skin, either with a cloth, loofah, or just the hands. If you don't use soap then you don't bathe. You just rinse.

People obsess over washcloths, loofahs, exfoliating gloves, silicone scrubbers, and whatever new shower gadget is trending. I honestly think they're less hygienic than just using your hands. Your hands are washed every time you shower. Most shower tools aren't. Loofahs stay damp for hours, washcloths often get reused multiple times before they're washed, and even silicone scrubbers can develop buildup if people don't clean them regularly. You're basically rubbing yesterday's dead skin and moisture back onto your body. I also don't buy the idea that you need something rough to get clean. Soap breaks down dirt and oils, and your hands can spread it over your entire body just fine. Unless you've got grease, paint, or actual grime on you, you're not scrubbing a dirty pan. People often confuse exfoliating with cleaning. Exfoliation has its place, but it isn't something everyone needs every single shower. For daily hygiene, clean hands, soap, and running water are enough. Sorry if this is a repost. After a shower, I used to wrestle my loofah to get all the soap out. That just lathered it more and created more foam, and it felt like ages before the soap was gone. Next time, try rinsing it under water without applying any pressure for a few seconds. Let water flush the soap out first, then give it a couple of squeezes at the very end. So I (26M) was hanging out with a couple friends last weekend and somehow the topic of showering came up. I casually mentioned how I scrub down with a washcloth and soap every day, and they both looked at me like I had three heads. One said he just uses his hands, and the other uses a loofah but admitted he barely replaces it. They acted like a washcloth was this old-timey, grandma thing. I honestly thought using just your hands was the weird thing how do you actually scrub off the day's sweat and dead skin? I’m not talking about exfoliating aggressively, just a quick all-over lather with a clean cloth. Now I’m overthinking my whole routine. Am I the strange one here? Do most people just rub bar soap between their hands and call it a day? No judgment, I'm genuinely curious. I feel like if I didn’t use a cloth I’d still feel greasy, especially in summer. Do y'all use a washcloth, loofah, hands, something else? Bonus question: how often are you supposed to swap out washcloths? I use a fresh one every shower, but maybe that’s overkill. Just recently booked an AirBnB in Utah which quite honestly wasn’t bad at all. But you could clearly tell they cut corners. All of the sponges on the sink were very old/worn and dirty. They told us they had plenty of soap they supplied so no need to buy any. When we arrived initially we couldn’t find the soap in the bathroom. So we proceeded to check all the draws and cabinets and discovered the soap supplied…🤮 Edit: Since this is taking off I guess I should have mentioned the draw under it had 5 used loofahs with old dried up skin on them and some of the bathroom towels had holes in them and some make up residue. I kid you not….I wish I was kidding. I’ve never seen anything like this before at an air bnb. So… I (26F) don’t even know how to start this without gagging. This happened earlier this week, and I’m still going through waves of disgust and disbelief. My boyfriend (28M) and I have been together for about a year now. We recently moved in together about three months ago. Before that, we’d spend weekends together, but I never really paid much attention to how he showered. I guess I just assumed he was like everyone else—soap, loofah, washcloth, maybe body wash, maybe even one of those fancy shower puffs. You know… normal hygiene. But oh, how wrong I was. So, around this Monday, he had been feeling sick the night before—some bad food, he said. I woke up to him rushing to the bathroom. Poor guy had a bad case of diarrhea. No big deal. He took a shower afterward, and I didn’t think twice about it. I had showered earlier that morning, and by the time he was done, I was already half asleep, so I didn’t go in there again. The next morning, I got up to take my shower. I picked up our shared bar of soap and saw booboo chunks on it. HIS BOOBOO CHUNKS ON IT. I gagged so hard I almost threw up. I dropped the soap immediately, turned off the water, and just stood there trying to process what the hell I was looking at. When I finally called him over, I asked him what the hell happened to the soap. He looked confused. I explained what I saw, and he goes, “Oh yeah, I took a shower last night after I went to the bathroom. I probably didn’t rinse the soap off right.” Dude.. what? And then that’s when I learned something that made me question everything about this man. He doesn’t use a washcloth. Or a loofah. Or a body brush. Or even his hands in a lathering way. He literally takes the bar of soap, wets it, wets himself with the shower hose, and rubs the bar directly all over his body—from head to toe. Including his armpits. His dick. His ass. And apparently, after having diarrhea. I didn’t even know what to say. I just stood there, horrified, replaying every single time I’d used that same damn bar of soap on my own loofah or washcloth. So the next day my first thought was to throw away every bar of soap we had and both of shared leaving just my body washes. When he saw me doing this, he got defensive. He asked why I was overreacting and said I was “making a big deal out of nothing.” I told him I wasn’t comfortable sharing soap anymore because now that I know what he’s been doing, it’s just… nasty. I didn’t shame him, I just said, “I didn’t realize that’s how you washed, and I can’t share a bar like that again.” He got quiet andsaid, “So you think I’m dirty?” I told him no, but that his method is unsanitary. Which, I mean… come on. It’s objectively gross. Especially if you’re using the same bar that touches your butthole and private parts, then it sits there collecting whatever didn’t rinse off. He stormed out, and a few hours later, I got a call from his sister asking me why I “embarrassed” him and “made him feel like a disgusting person.” Apparently, he told his family about it. His mom texted me something like, “Men have been using bars of soap for generations. You’re making it sound filthy.” Am I insane for thinking this is different though?? Like… yes, people use bar soap. But most people don’t literally rub it between their cheeks and then put it back for someone else to use. At some point in the last few decades, it seems like people stopped using bar soap in favor of body wash. This is due to successful marketing that implies body wash gets you cleaner, is better for your skin, and is somehow more convenient, compared to good old fashioned bar soap. This is ridiculous, bar soap is way better. Here's why: Bar soap and body wash are basically made from the same chemicals, there is no difference in how they interact with dirt or your skin. Obviously different brands will have different quality, but compared across brands its basically the same. Bar soap is way cheaper. Even for premium brands, bar soap is a fraction of the cost of stupid body wash. Less plastic waste. Bar soap leaves behind a tiny cellophane wrapper compared to a big, thick plastic bottle + lid/pump top. If you care at all about the environment, ditch the body wash for the much lower impact bar soap. No additional equipment needed. You can apply bar soap directly to skin and its easy to get a good lather going. With body wash, you need a loofah or at least a wash cloth to get a good lather going otherwise you end up wasting a ton of product to get clean. You don't need a loofah or a sponge to actually get clean in the shower. Your hands and soap are enough. "But you need to exfoliate!" - Your dead skin cells naturally fall off on their own. Most of the dust in your house is dead skin cells. You don't need to forcefully rub yourself in order for this process to happen. Soap and your hands will wash away the dead skin cells on your body. Human skin is sensitive, you are not a snake trying to shed its skin. "You wouldn't wash your dishes without a sponge" - Sebum doesn't harden onto your skin like cooking oil does to dishes. Soap is more than capable of removing the oil on your skin and the bacteria on its own. You also usually don't have food stuck on your body as we tend to remove that with a napkin asap. Loofahs and sponges are plastic waste that need to be regularly replaced as they are absolute bacteria bombs. Even if you wash them in the washing machine, that is just a way to release microplastics into the world and they will eventually degrade and break apart anyway. Natural loofahs should be considered a torture device. My cat's claws are more gentle on the skin. I refuse to believe anyone can stand actually rubbing that onto their skin every day. The shower gloves start smelling weird really fast, should probably be washed after every shower meaning you would need a minimum of 3-4 different pairs depending on how fast you can wash and dry them, they don't lather properly and I couldn't notice a hygiene increase, actually left feeling dirtier than washing with just my hands. The people who actually need to scrub their skin are blue collar workers, doctors and anyone working with the sickly, bodily fluids, chemicals or actual dirt and mud. The people who swear by the loofah or the sponge are usually impeccably clean city people who only get muddy once a month when it rains. It just feels like a ruse to get people to spend more, buy more and waste more products when they don't need it. I do own an exfoliating sponge that I sparingly use and it's an okay product. I still enjoy using my hands much more and everyone is entitled to their own way of cleaning themselves, as long as they actually do. Where I draw the line is when people start shaming others for not using these products and basically calling us dirty sewage monsters when it really isn't the case. As long as you use water and soap, you will come out cleaner than you went into the shower. -its cheap -good for skin -no plastic waste -large veriety of choices (for different skins) - one bars of soap last longer than a whole bottle of liquid wash (it's easier to control the amount of soap used with a bar compared to liquid soap) -You dont share with family members like you do with liquid body wash. -You can also wash your hands with bar soap (not the same one you use to wash your body) I use Dial gold bar soap. Leaves my skin hydraded and clean. can buy a pack of 12 for $9.48 (0.79 per bar) . Also when I travel. I dont have to worry about airport security. Totally recommend everyone to switch to bar soap. Especially in this economy. Edit: Do people not use lotion after showering? Edit #2: Totally concerned for people who say they share one bar soap with the whole family... Could never share my bar soap with anyone. They're too cheap to not be able to afford one for everyone. I dont lather the soap bar on my body. I use a looffah or a wash cloth and use that to wash my body. Also rinse your bar soap after every use! A lot of family and friends stay at my house, and usually I always give them a towel and rag to shower, but barely anyone uses the rag. Am I the outlier here? Yes, I know they most likely use their hands or just the bar of soap, but as a rag user it seems like it would be harder. Why would you not use a rag you know what I mean? Edit: well from the comments I’m now enlightened. The most common reasons I read are 1. Too abrasive 2. Extra laundry 3. Pointless/hands are more sanitary. As a lifelong rag user, I agree the laundry can be annoying, but I’m so used to it at this point that I’ll still use them. Thanks all for the feedback to my stupid question. Bar soap makes you feel more clean than liquid body wash by using the actual soap to scrub instead of just soap suds. Bar soap is also cheaper, and uses less plastic to the benefit of our environment.
