And I get it why Bungie moved on.... This game has a “micro‑dopamine treadmill” design philosophy as those hyper‑engineered, Chinese‑style progression grinders — the ones that drip‑feed you just enough reward to keep you chasing the next tiny objective. So all that outrage in the Marathon forums is finally justified. Bungie did you a favor by breaking you off the bad stuff.

First off let me say that I absolutely LOVE this game. In basically just March I put over 200 hours into it, got every achievement, did all the endgame things, VIP factions, etc. I couldn’t get enough of it. Obviously this led to me getting burnt out so I decided to just go play some other stuff until the new season. Coming back today it just doesn’t grab me the same. Night Marsh is really cool. Everything about the update is great. Yet I played for an hour and thought “eh I’m good.” I’m not really sure what I would need to keep me playing. I thought a long break would having me coming back hyped to do runs all night but unfortunately that isn’t the case. Look im a Marathon fan NGL but im not here to tell people you have to play only to give it a shot! I've never been a bungie fanboy, i missed out on all the Halo hype and Destiny Hype, i only played Halo with brothers when younger and a bit of D1, this is my first Bungie game that ive actually put time in, so i had no idea they had a bad reputation. All i can say is they have done right by the Marathon community and im giving them credit for that. Also want to say im sorry to all the Destiny fans even the ones who have been attacking Marathon, i dont agree with the attacks but i understand the pain of losing a game (wildstar for me). I dont like destiny but others do and no one deserves to have a hobby they love killed, so my heart goes out to you guys and i hope they decide otherwise. Even if i dont like something im glad it exists for the ones that do. THE FIRST WEEK OF S2 IS FREE! June 2nd - June 9th and if you played server slam give it another go or if you havent tried it give it a few matches. I wasnt a Marathon fan after server slam, i only played due to a few friends playing and now its one of my favorite shooters ever made, ill be playing till game is dead and glad i spent my time doing so. So i hope to see some new people over there. Ok hear me out. If Halo 2 had released with no campaign and only one game mode do you think it would have been as successful as it was? The shooting and graphics in Marathon are top notch and I enjoyed the server slam. But what it's missing is the hook. That is, something to hook people to the game. It's hard to learn mechanics in multiplayer. It's hard to tell a story in seasonal content. I think if Marathon would have had a proper campaign and several different multiplayer modes it would have been wildly successful. They essentially released a third of a full game. I’ve been seeing plenty of talk about how the hardcore nature of the game is driving players away. From my experience, the hardcore aspect is just something that comes with the territory that is extraction shooters. So, what is it that made Tarkov and Hunt Showdown “successful” titles despite being incredibly punishing and hardcore experiences? Marathon fits somewhere in between these two games in terms of difficulty, and yet I constantly see people say that it’s the issue driving players away. I don’t think we can say that though when again there are successful examples in the genre that managed to garner success. So what is the problem, really? I want to have a productive discussion about this. Edit: From what I’ve gathered, the main thing that people think those other games are doing (aside from having a smaller budget which is just not a thing that can be fixed at this point) is that PvP is easier to avoid. And I agree, but I’m unsure how they can improve this. One idea I have that might be a LITTLE crazy actually comes from Cryo. Perhaps when you’re ready to exfil, you have to find a terminal and activate it. It’ll then scan for nearby exfils. You then have the location of all nearby exfils, and can choose which one you go to from there. Prior to using a terminal, you won’t have the location of any exfils meaning you could also just stumble onto one or if you know where they might spawn you can always do that as well. Potentially getting rid of the beam of light from them also makes exfils more secretive. You then have less teams converging on the same exfil or booking it to one to kill whoever is trying to leave. This only helps with exfil, I know, but it makes one aspect of the game a little safer in terms of avoiding PvP because I do think we’re getting somewhere in thinking about that. Tarkov is…more hardcore. Absolutely. But the fact that PvP is easier to avoid in that game might be a hint at what Marathon can do differently to draw in more players. Edit 2: I think I’ve already gathered a lot of good info on what people care about and what they feel is missing from Marathon, and I’ll keep monitoring discussion and then I plan to compile the issues I think keep being brought up that seem like valid points of criticism and areas for improvement in another post and see how it goes. submitted by /u/hi_there_is_me to r/Marathon [link] [comments]

I'm really confused by how much this game is struggling to grasp even the Extraction shooter players, that's what I don't get. Cause yeah, I know it has problems, lack of Matchmaking and it's not casual friendly and such, I get it, and those are fair concerns and reasons why it's not a massive hit. But even when comparing with other Extraction shooters we can see it's not capturing the people that love this kind of game. And that's what I don't get! How does Greyzone Warfare have more active players than Marathon? One is has very strong / bold aesthetics, amazing gunplay, rich lore, great map design, sound design and player progression (even if it needs tweaking) while the other genuinely looks unfinished and generic, icons that look like unreal stock market stuff, stiff animations... How is that even within the genre this game is having such a hard time? Last night me and my roommate left the bar around 1:30 AM and decided to see who could walk the furthest without giving up. After about 10 miles we realized we were way too far from home and no one was awake to drive us back so we just went for a full marathon. We got back around 10:20 AM after walking for 8 hours and 23 minutes straight. We’re both college students and only really run 2 to 3 miles a week so we were not prepared for this at all. We were wearing jeans and sweatshirts with Converse and New Balances which made it miserable once it started raining. It poured for about three hours starting around 4 AM and it was around 45 degrees out. Our shoes were killing our feet and our soaked jeans and sweatshirts made every step harder. Somehow we didn’t need a single sip of water the entire time which still makes no sense to me. Once we sobered up it was just straight pain and trying to prove we could finish. We thought it would be easy at first but it humbled us quick. The last few miles were brutal. Our legs hips and the bottoms of our feet were aching so bad we almost couldn’t finish. It honestly might be the hardest mental thing I’ve ever done. Me and my roommate don’t regret it but we’ll never do something like that again. Now both of us can barely walk and I’m not sure if I can even make it to class tomorrow.
