Finally channeled my inner chaotic curator with this layered blush look: (inspired by '90s grunge album art, using only cream blushes and a damp sponge) 🦇
Okay, real talk for a minute: sometimes, the idea of 'perfectly blended' eyeshadow just feels… exhausting. My latest dive into the deep end of alt makeup wasn't about precision, but rather, embracing the beautiful mess. I've been fixated on recreating that effortlessly undone, almost smudged-from-yesterday liner look, but make it intentional – a total '90s alt vibe meets a touch of chaotic curator experimentation. I wasn't looking for a sharp, graphic line. I wanted something that looked lived-in, a bit rebellious, and definitely not like I spent an hour painstakingly buffing. The challenge was making it look purposefully messy, not just... accidental mess. Here’s how my latest little creative dive went down – and what actually made it work (eventually): The Goal: A smudged, almost 'worn-in' graphic liner with a hint of unexpected color, inspired by '90s grunge and the 'chaotic curator' aesthetic of throwing unexpected elements together. Not sharp, not neat, but artfully disheveled. Tools of the Trade (and price points, because real life): NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in 'Black Bean' ($6.00): This was my base. It's creamy, gives you a good minute to smudge, and really helps 'grip' powder shadows. ColourPop 'Fade Into Hue' Palette (specifically the deep plum 'Take a Break' and the muted olive 'Prank Call' shades, $34.00 for the whole palette, but you only need a few shades): Used these to layer over and around the pencil for depth and that slightly grungy color pop. A flat, dense eyeliner brush (e.g., e.l.f. Smudge Brush, $3.00): Crucial for pushing the shadow into the liner and diffusing the edges. Setting spray (any you have on hand, I used my Milani Make It Last, ~$10.00): A spritz on the brush before dipping into shadow intensified the color and helped it stick. The Actual Process (and where it got messy): I started by drawing a fairly thick, slightly winged line with the NYX pencil on my upper lid, right along the lash line. The idea wasn't perfection, but a solid foundation. Immediately, before it set, I took the flat brush and started smudging the top edge of the pencil, pulling it slightly upwards and outwards. This created the initial blurred effect. Then came the colour. I lightly spritzed my smudge brush with setting spray, picked up 'Take a Break' (the plum), and pressed it firmly over the smudged pencil line, extending it just a tiny bit past the original pencil wing. This is where I almost gave up: It looked like a bruised eye at first. The key was to go back in with a clean, fluffy blending brush (a cheap one from Amazon, maybe $1.00 per brush) and gently buff the very edges of the plum, not trying to blend it away, but just softening the transition. For that "chaotic curator" twist, I took a tiny bit of 'Prank Call' (the olive) on a very small, precise brush and just dotted it in the inner corner, then blended it slightly into the plum. It sounds weird, but it just added a layer of unexpectedness. A final pass with the clean smudge brush to ensure no harsh lines, and a quick clean-up with a pointed Q-tip dipped in micellar water for any stray fall-out. Time Invested: About 15-20 minutes, mostly because I kept over-smudging and had to clean up. This is definitely not a 5-minute look, especially the first few times. Let me be brutally honest: the first attempt looked like I’d just woken up from a very long, very sad nap. My skill level for this kind of 'controlled mess' was basically zero going in. I definitely used way too much pencil at first, which made it impossible to blend without it migrating halfway down my face. The biggest surprise was how much a little setting spray on the brush changed the game for color intensity and longevity – previously, my smudged looks would just... vanish. It took three tries over two days to get something I felt good about enough to actually leave the house in. It's less about a flawless finish and more about creating an effect that feels authentic to you, even if it’s a bit grungy around the edges. If you're out there, sketching out abstract eyeliner ideas on your hand, experimenting with colors that 'don't go,' or just generally exploring unconventional makeup styles that speak to your soul, you're not alone. If you want to connect with fellow alt beauty lovers, share your creative experiments, practical techniques, and honest product reviews for aesthetics like literary gothic, chaotic curator, reverie escapist, functionalist, and '90s alt, come join us at r/AltBeautyHub. Why do people insist that blush wasn't a thing in 2016? Like when people do "2016 makeup," they often don't include blush for "historical accuracy." Blush was definitely popular back then.
It wasn't as popular as eyeshadow palettes or liquid lipsticks or highlighters, but we still wore blush in 2016. I remember the Tarte Amazonian Clay powder blushes being popular, as well as Nars Orgasm and the Milani baked blushes. I also remember the Hourglass blushes being popular. Brands weren't constantly releasing cream and liquid blush, but even then, those products did exist. I remember Tarte had cream blushes in stick form back then. I had the shade "Exposed." People also hyped up the cream blushes from Stila. submitted by /u/coconutleaves to r/muacjdiscussion [link] [comments]

Finally figured out how to nail that '90s alt hazy blush look I've been dreaming of: (Used a single cream blush and my fingers to blend) 🌙
I've been seeing a lot of chatter lately about "underpainting" – that technique where you apply contour, blush, and highlight under your foundation for a super seamless, sculpted look. But as someone who leans more into the soft blur of a reverie escapist aesthetic or the artful imperfection of a chaotic curator, I found myself wondering: could I twist this technique to create something softer, more diffused, even a little... unearthly? My mission became clear: achieve a dreamy, almost smudged effect using mostly drugstore finds, aiming for a whisper of color rather than sharp definition. This wasn't about a sculpted jawline; it was about creating a hazy aura. Here's how my experiment unfolded: The Vibe Check: My aesthetic inspiration leaned heavily into faded renaissance paintings, the soft focus of old photography, and that "just woke up from a very interesting dream" feeling. Less "structured," more "aura." My Toolkit (Mostly Drugstore Gems): For the "Underpainting" Layer: Contour: e.l.f. Halo Glow Contour Wand in Light/Medium ($9) - Applied with the lightest hand imaginable. Blush: Milani Cheek Kiss Liquid Blush in Nude Flush ($9.99) - Dabbed on with fingers, not a brush. Highlight: Maybelline Facestudio Master Strobing Stick in Nude ($9.99) - For a very subtle sheen, not a beam. For the Diffusing "Overpainting" Base: Foundation: L'Oréal True Match Hyaluronic Tinted Serum in W3-4 ($19.99) - Light coverage was key here, something breathable. Finishing Touches & Eyes: Inner Corner Brightness: NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk ($5) - Smudged lightly near the inner corner. Lashes: essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara ($4.99) - Just a touch, not full drama. Lips: NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner in Soft-Spoken ($4.99) - Used to softly diffuse the lip line. Setting Powder (minimal): e.l.f. Halo Glow Setting Powder ($8) - A light dusting only on the T-zone to prevent shine. The Technique & Time Investment: Prep: A light moisturizer, no primer. I wanted things to meld, not sit on top. Underpainting: I applied microscopic dots of the contour and blush, then immediately blended with my fingers. The goal wasn't a line, but a soft stain. The highlight went on the high points, tapped in. This delicate dance took about 5-7 minutes. "Overpainting" (Foundation): The tinted serum went on with a damp beauty sponge, lightly tapping over the "underpainting." The crucial part was not to disturb the colors too much, but to let the serum act as a veil, diffusing them. This added another 3-4 minutes. Finishing: Eyes, lips, and powder were quick – maybe 5 minutes max. Total time: Roughly 15-20 minutes. Not a rush, but definitely not an hour-long commitment. Real Talk: The Glorious Mess & Lessons Learned Okay, so here's the honest truth: my first attempt looked... muddy. I'd used just a tiny bit too much contour, and when the tinted serum went on, it just looked like a patchy, unwell attempt at a tan. Lesson learned: when aiming for diffused, less is genuinely more. The second time, I truly used what felt like microscopic dots of product. Another surprise was how much the type of foundation mattered. A thicker, full-coverage formula would have totally obscured the soft colors underneath, defeating the whole "veil" purpose. The tinted serum was perfect because it let the colors show through like a watercolor wash, creating that hazy effect I was after. Did it look like "traditional" underpainting, with crisp definition and a perfectly carved cheekbone? Absolutely not. It lacked that sharp precision. But that was the whole point! It achieved this soft, almost blurred effect that felt very much in line with that reverie escapist vibe – like my face had been painted with a soft, ethereal filter. It was a pleasant surprise how a technique meant for sharpness could be bent towards softness. If you're out there exploring unconventional makeup styles, twisting techniques to fit your own unique aesthetic, or just want to connect with fellow alt beauty lovers, I'd love for you to join us. ETA: not including sheglam because that's shein's makeup brand which is... not... great. milani has been struck from this list as they publicly sided with johnny depp during the trial. unfortunately, this list is not bds safe because i typed it from memory, and its gets pretty hard to keep track of who is the parent company of which brand. so i urge everyone to do their own research, as it will take me a couple of days to track down the parent company of each brand and then mark them safe on the list. meanwhile, here is the bds list - https://boycott.thewitness.news/categories/cosmetics submitted by /u/SexyFoodandFilms to r/drugstoreMUA [link] [comments]

Milani Berry Amore/Peachy Bronze Blush?
Berry Amore by Milani is genuienly the modt beautiful blush I have ever tried. Its a peachy, not too orange, blush that is amazing. Im looking for a liquid or cream blush with a somewhat similar shade to this. Or one that js enhances the colour that berry amore provides (like its not exact, but it works) I find light peach blushes work well. Please let me know any dupes! submitted by /u/Wonderful-Freedom488 to r/makeupdupes [link] [comments]

Best drugstore cream or liquid blush to layer under Milani Dolce pink?
I have fair skin, and I am new to cream blush. I am looking for cream or liquid blush recommendations to layer under the baked blush from Milani. Besides the liquid dolce pink, is there a drugstore one without shimmer that would also look nice under the dolce pink baked blush? Thanks! submitted by /u/Few-Cardiologist1057 to r/MakeupAddiction [link] [comments]

My Drugstore Blush Reviews: CREAM EDITION
Mature, combo skin a neutral/light undertone (MAC N4.75) RATING CRITERIA 3 - Would NOT repurchase 2- Very Good, would recommend 1 - Excellent, highly recommend 1+ - HOLY GRAIL Elf Putty Blush in Bora Bora - formula is a bit stiff and on the dryer side. Longevity and pigment is good, but not my favourite. RATING - 3 Revolution Super Dewy Blush in You Had Me at First Blush and Fake the Flush. Very long lasting and great pigment - convenient packaging! RATING - 2 Moira Loveheat Cream Blush in 19 Assure You. Although this is a lovely light peach colour, the formula is too creamy (almost goopy). As a result, it doesn’t play well with foundation. RATING - 3 Milani Cheek Kiss in 110 Nude Kiss and 130 Blushing Berry. Cheek Kiss?! More like Chef’s Kiss!! This formula melts into the skin and isn’t too dry or wet. These colours would look great on many skin tones. Lasts all day! RATING - 1+ (HG Status) submitted by /u/Kell_Bell_Fell to r/drugstoreMUA [link] [comments]
