I went down a rabbit hole on why mouth taping fails for people who stick with it and turns out it’s usually not the tape
I got curious about mouth taping after seeing it everywhere and started reading way too much about why some people swear by it and others say it does nothing. The thing that surprised me: a lot of the “it doesn’t work for me” cases seem to come down to a few specific, fixable things rather than the concept being useless. A few things I didn’t expect: Most people tape too high, up near the nose. Lower placement, closer to the lip line, seems to hold a lot better because there’s less lip movement there and you’re off the curve of the upper lip. Costs nothing to try. A tape can look like it “stayed on” and still have failed. If the corners lift partway through the night, the seal can break slowly and you end up mouth breathing for the back half of your sleep without knowing it, which is the part that matters most for recovery. So “I woke up with it still on but felt rough” doesn’t automatically mean it worked. And the big one nobody seems to say out loud: if you’ve genuinely tried different tapes and placements and still can’t nose breathe, it’s probably not a tape problem. Deviated septum, chronic congestion, or possible apnea mean the airway itself can’t carry the load, and tape isn’t a fix for that, that’s a doctor/ENT conversation. (Also worth saying: if you snore heavily or suspect apnea, don’t tape and tough it out, go get assessed first.) Curious what other people here have actually experienced, did placement ever make a difference for you, or did you find it just wasn’t the right tool for your situation? Did mouth taping actually change anyone’s jawline or is it just TikTok hype?
ok so I actually did the whole “mouth taping while sleeping” thing for a week because I kept seeing people swear it snatches your jawline… and I needed to know if it was real or just another internet lie lol first off it feels WEIRD. like the first night I was very aware of my mouth being taped shut and I lowkey thought I was gonna suffocate (I didn’t, obviously). after like night 2 or 3 tho, I kinda got used to it the supposed idea is that you breathe through your nose more, which somehow helps your face/jaw situation over time so here’s what I noticed: I did wake up with less dry mouth which was actually nice I think my sleep felt a little deeper?? could be placebo tho my jawline… didn’t magically transform or anything lol like maybeee I looked a tiny bit less puffy in the morning? but nothing dramatic. definitely not the sculpted model face TikTok promised also small warning: if your nose is even slightly blocked, this is NOT fun. one night I had a bit of congestion and immediately ripped the tape off at 3am overall verdict: it’s not some miracle jawline hack. it might help with mouth breathing/sleep quality a bit, but don’t expect to wake up looking like a different person I’m kinda 50/50 on continuing it tbh anyone else tried this or am I just easily influenced by the internet. submitted by /u/Suitable-Flight-805 to r/BeautyGear [link] [comments]

We analyzed mouth taping + wearables.. And the results surprised us
Back towards the end of 2025 we ran a small experiment looking at whether mouth taping actually improves sleep quality when measured with wearables. Participants used devices like: • Oura Ring • Whoop • Apple Watch • Garmin and logged nights with and without mouth taping. We just recently finished analyzing the results. A few interesting findings: • Many participants saw measurable improvements in sleep score and HRV • Some saw no change at all • A small subset actually experienced worse sleep https://preview.redd.it/mobbrfrumvqg1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=6e9fc6128a3ba038b2f4efdb6b059affb68f252f One of the more interesting patterns was that people who already had strong nasal breathing habits benefited less than people who are suspected habitual mouth breathers. You can see the full breakdown here: https://cosimoresearch.substack.com/p/does-mouth-taping-improve-sleep (Charts and data included) Something I'm curious about from this community: Have you tried mouth taping? Did your wearable data change at all? Did you track HRV / sleep score differences? A lot of the anecdotal reports online are very positive, but the data seems more nuanced than most people claim. If anyone here already tracks sleep with a wearable, we're currently running a larger follow-up study to expand the dataset. It only requires: • A wearable sleep tracker • Logging a few nights of data • Trying mouth taping for comparison If you're interested in participating: https://www.cosimoresearch.com/taping-study-registration We're trying to crowdsource real biometric data rather than relying purely on anecdotes. I’ve used mouth tape every night for the past 5 years. Here’s my past month of sleep data
I regularly score 90s and high 80s. last month I had 3 93s and a 94. We cut our own mouth tape and the pieces are usually about 1” X .5” so we can still talk and take sips of water. I know there’s a lot of controversy around sleep tape. This is my experience: I use it nearly every night, and I feel the difference (negatively) when I forget. My body seems to have adjusted to it, bc I use it when I have a cold or congestion and it always seems to keep at least 1 if not both nostrils clear all night. Throughout my teens and early 20s, I would wake up 2 to 3 times every single night to go pee. That almost never happens now. And according to my wife, my snoring and sleep poofing is also rare. I also mostly quit using a pillow earlier this month so I think that helped a bit too. I’ve always used a very thin pillow since my grandpa always said it helps with keeping my airway clear and is good for neck posture. We both try to only breathe with our noses during the day as well. I’ll add That my wife does the same but she doesn’t have a fitbit. She got her airway scanned about 6 years and has a very narrow airway, But she also uses Mouth tape every night on her own And she knows how helpful it is for her sleep. She was genuinely very worried about its safety when she first tried it out. But I don’t think it’s dangerous at all in my opinion. Mouth tape is almost free and easy to take with you. I honestly think almost everyone would benefit from it, So if you’re doubtful, just give it a shot for a night or a week. submitted by /u/obronikoko to r/fitbit [link] [comments]

Tried mouth tape for 30 nights here’s what actually happened
Hey everyone I gave mouth taping a try after dealing with dry mouth and snoring complaints. The first few nights felt weird, like having a sticky thing on my face. But after about a week, it felt normal. Dry mouth went away, and my snoring got quieter. I even woke feeling more refreshed most days. It’s not perfect the tape won’t stick if I sweat, and I still toss and turn. But if you struggle with mouth breathing or snoring, it might be worth testing. Anyone else use mouth tape long term? Does mouth taping actually work?
There is an ongoing study that is finally putting this to the test! It's called the Big Taping Truth Trial, and you can sign up here: https://tally.so/r/mexl00 (takes 15-20 min) You need an Oura, Apple watch, or Whoop to join. Basically you connect your fitness tracker data, get randomized taping assignments for 30 nights, and at the end they send you a personalized results report. Will be really cool to see how this turns out! It's about time we studied this trend more thoroughly. submitted by /u/papayamaia to r/HubermanLab [link] [comments]

Has anyone experienced a NEGATIVE effect to mouth taping?
Mouth taping has significantly improved my quality of life. Since I've been doing this the past couple of weeks, I have been waking up less groggy, having more energy throughout the day, focusing better, and there's a surge of motivation that I haven't felt in years. I'm even beating my alarm awake sometimes, which literally never happened before. An unexpected benefit from mouth taping is that it seems to have significantly impacted by canker sore episodes in a positive way. I've been unable to eat right since January of this year with horrific back-to-back canker sores that would last weeks on end. Over the past few weeks of doing this, the canker sore frequency and intensity seem to have gone down dramatically. While there are other things I've been doing as well, I know without a doubt that mouth taping has played a huge role. Now, the scientific community says the studies are inconclusive with some evidence to suggest that it can help with mild sleep apnea, though it is not accepted into standard treatment. Meanwhile, I find statements like these made by Harvard university: "While intentional nose breathing during waking hours can offer many benefits — including slowing breathing, filtering allergens, and easing anxiety — taping your mouth while sleeping to achieve this can prove risky, leading to hampered breathing, disrupted sleep, or skin irritation" It's one thing if it didn't give any benefit, but has anyone experienced an outright negative effect? submitted by /u/Doughboy0913 to r/sleep [link] [comments]

Wyoming Hunter Captured A Wolf, Taped Its Mouth Shut & Showed It Off At A Bar Before Killing It
Disturbing news of a wolf that was captured and killed in Wyoming has outraged animal lovers around the world. A man allegedly captured a wolf, taped its mouth shut, and then took the injured animal to a bar to show it off. After tormenting the defenseless wolf, the man then took the animal to the back and shot it. According to Cowboy State Daily, Cody Roberts, 42, who is a father and owns a trucking company, allegedly ran the wolf down with a snowmobile before capturing it. Taping my mouth changed my life!!!
I have never been told in my life to tape my mouth shut while sleeping. I use to laugh at the idea. Over the last couple of years, I have been trying to optimize my sleep habits. One of the things that I have found is that taping my mouth shut has changed the way I LIVE. I use to snore and drool in my sleep and I remember waking up with these severe depressive thoughts (morning depression). Once I started taping my mouth, the morning depression went away. I haven't had a sore throat or have been sick since I started taping my mouth shut. I rarely wake up in the middle of the night and I am able to go throughout my day without feeling the need to take a nap. My caffeine intake has gone from pre-workout everyday to maybe a couple cups of coffee a week. Your body was designed to breathe through your nose. Breathing through your mouth is like eating through your nose, it doesn't work. Mouth breathing may seem innocent and most people don't even know that they do it. This post isn't here to convince you to start taping your mouth but to tell you the importance of KEEPING YOUR MOUTH SHUT during sleep. Some people can do that without tape but I feel the need to tape my mouth just to be safe. I strongly strongly encourage anyone that is skeptical to try for a week. I understand that the first couple nights with tape on your mouth can be difficult but the pay off is so worth it. I have been using Nexcare sensitive skin tape (it is light blue). I buy it at CVS for $10 and it will last me 2 months. Best $10 I could spend on my health. Please give it a try if you are having trouble staying awake throughout your day. You might be surprised. submitted by /u/Soft-Bluejay4897 to r/sleep [link] [comments]

PSA: mouth taping is actually super dangerous!
My sister tried this for a while based on what she read online. When she told her doctor about it, they said to stop immediately, as it can compound existing sleep/breathing problems and DEPRIVE YOU OF OXYGEN. Her doctor ordered a sleep study instead. It can take a few tries to get it approved by insurance, but my fiancé did one and it was really helpful. submitted by /u/duckling_tales to r/YourMomAndDadPodcast [link] [comments]

This Marine with “I can’t breathe” taped over his mouth stood for hours in silent protest calling for justice for victims of police killings. He stood unmoving for so long in the hot sun at the Utah State Capitol that his shoes melted into the pavement.

It would really suck getting kidnapped with a cold. If they taped your mouth shut, you really wouldn't be able to breathe.

If I was kidnapped and had my mouth duct taped, I would most likely die because my nose is clogged 90% of the time.
okok, replace "mouth duct taped" to "primary breathing hole plugged" submitted by /u/gutkassidy to r/Showerthoughts [link] [comments]
