Love my natural hair but hate how it makes me look
UPDATE: I’m planning to book a curly cut and style, outside of braids I’ve never gotten my hair done by a professional so I think that would help a lot with shaping and style advice For context I’ve been natural (no relaxers, silk press, and minimal heat) for almost 10 years. I’ve always had a thick head of hair and hated feeling like I always had to hide it to look “presentable“ so one day I just washed it added some oil and walked out the door lol. Since then I’ve been switching between wearing protective styles like box braids and half wigs (kinky texture only) and wearing my natural hair out. My hair has grown a lot and when straightened it’s a little long but when left curly it’s right at my shoulders. Long story short I LOVE my natural hair despite it being 4C and “a lot to deal with” and if it were up to me and I had a less busy schedule I would wear it out almost all the time. BUT I naturally have a very round face and it’s not the cutest look on me personally. Everyone I know that’s natural has good bone structure for it but I really don’t, I feel like my hair doesnt suit me. So many people have randomly told me that I look better with braids vs just wearing my hair out and while I get it, it hurts because it’s literally MY hair so shouldn’t it look good on me?? Sorry yall just had to rant about it because it bothers me! submitted by /u/Unusual_Season5503 to r/Naturalhair [link] [comments]

Been leaning into my natural curls lately - does this style actually work on me?
For most of my life I kept my hair pretty short and honestly had no idea it was curly at all. Last year I finally grew it out a bit for the first time and the woman who cuts my hair mentioned that I might actually have some curls. I didn’t believe her at first, but ever since then I’ve been experimenting with letting my natural curl pattern do its thing. It’s been a bit of a process and definitely a learning curve. From what I can tell my hair seems to fall somewhere around 2C–3A, and I’ve been trying to build a routine that actually brings the curls out instead of fighting them. I'm mostly curious whether the cut and styling actually suit my face shape / overall vibe, or if there’s something I should adjust (length, shape, styling, etc.). Below is the routine I’ve been using lately. ROUTINE: Shower / Wetting Hair I start by getting the bathroom hot and steamy and letting my hair get completely soaked in the shower. While it’s soaking I flip and shake it a bit to make sure everything is evenly wet. Before getting out I do a very light rake-and-shake with just water to start encouraging the curls to group together and remove a little excess water. Initial Leave-In Products Once I get out of the shower I apply: • SheaMoisture Hold & Shine Moisture Mist • Hair Story Primer + Heat Protectant I lightly run my fingers through my hair to distribute these evenly so everything gets a light coating. Curl Products For the main styling product I mix roughly a 50/50 blend of: • Hair Story Hair Balm • OUAI Curl Cream (Usually a little heavier on the Hair Balm.) I make sure these are mixed really well in my hands before applying. Instead of applying everything at once, I reapply product to my hands 2–3 times and work in sections: • front • middle / crown • back Sometimes I step into a cooler room while doing this because I’ve noticed the cooler air actually seems to help the curls tighten up and clump together better. Curl Clumping + Scrunching After distributing the balm and curl cream mixture evenly, I lean forward and gently scrunch the curls from the tips toward the roots. This helps remove excess moisture and encourages the curls to form stronger clumps. After one gentle pass, I add a small amount of **Hair Story Gel** and go back through scrunching again. This helps remove the remaining excess moisture, reinforces the curl formation, and allows the curls to dry with a light cast so they hold their shape better. Diffusing For drying I use a **Dyson SpeedStyle Pro**. I stand upright and carefully diffuse around my head. I usually start at the front and then work my way around while keeping the airflow controlled so the curl clumps stay intact. I diffuse until my hair is about **80–90% dry**. Letting It Set After diffusing I let my hair air dry the rest of the way for about **30–60 minutes** so the curls can fully set. Final Styling Once fully dry I: • lightly scrunch out any stiffness • add a small amount of texture powder at the roots • lightly shape the curls with my fingers Sometimes I finish with a very light hairspray just to keep things in place. WASHING Most nights when I shower I rinse my hair thoroughly and do a quick wash with **Hair Story “New Wash.”** If I could only recommend one product it would probably be that. It cleans everything out (especially texture powder) without stripping the hair. If my hair feels dry at all I’ll also add a few sprays of **OUAI Leave-In Conditioner** while it’s still damp and wrap it with an old cotton tee or microfiber towel for a bit. Every week or two I’ll do a deeper wash with **OUAI Medium Hair Shampoo**, and about once a month I’ll use **OUAI Detox Shampoo** to remove buildup. Whenever I do a deep wash I always follow it with some kind of deeper conditioning treatment, usually the **OUAI Treatment Mask**. I’m especially curious if the top length vs sides balance looks right, or if the shape should be adjusted. MAIN QUESTIONS: • Does this style actually suit my face shape? • Should the length or shape be adjusted? • Do the curls look defined enough or too heavy? • Anything obvious I could improve in the routine? Appreciate any feedback- still learning how to work with curly hair. submitted by /u/AcutalJoeRogan69 to r/curlyhair [link] [comments]

Feeling confident in my natural hair
(Yassified for anonymity) TW: Opinion I know this conversation can get a bit contentious, so please bear with me. I’m what they’d call a wig/lacefront warrior, not because I loved them but I struggled with thinness and poor retention for years and the thought of wearing my hair as is, felt like something I couldn’t feel confident enough for. This (pictured) is the healthiest my hair has been in a lonnng time and I’m finding that I’m preferring it over wigs nowadays which is unprecedented for me. I’ve been trying out different styles with my natural hair recently but have not worn it outside. This is a roll out I did for a second recording of a YouTube video. I initially did it in a silky straight wig which was high key floating above my head like a helmet. And the audio was fudged, so I thought I’d try again with the rollers - to avoid aforementioned wig malfunctions and (unsurprisingly) felt very cute, very fly - which I’d usually be way too self conscious for. FYI: Not wanting praise for embracing my own hair but it made me happy and I just thought I’d share ☺️🩷 submitted by /u/Ok-Vegetable-4842 to r/BlackHair [link] [comments]

Wore My Natural Hair on Vacation
I wanted to share my vacation hair photos from Summer 2025 because a lot of people think they can’t wear their natural hair on vacation. I actually made the biggest mistake by buying a gel I’d never tried before right before the trip. I bought it specifically for the trip smdh, the Curlsmith fragrance free stronghold gel, and I absolutely hated it. It has zero slip and immediately makes my hair feel dry when I apply it. It did the exact same thing to my HerGivenHair wig too. Just a mess. Because of that, my hair wasn’t easy to style like I expected it to be. That was also the only styler I brought with me. Tbh, the hairstyle in the last photo was a fail, but I still decided to include it because it's okay for your hair not to turn out how you wanted it to. I really wanted to do the tropical double claw clips hairstyle, but it was very hard since I cut my hair short and also because the gel made my hair super hard to work with. Anyway, even though I made a huge mistake with that stupid gel and the failed hairstyle, I’m still really glad I wore my real hair. I wanted to go swimming so bad, and there was no way I wasn’t going to go underwater and I personally would not want to do that with a wig on. submitted by /u/iam_adumbass to r/Naturalhair [link] [comments]

How can I look/feel more girly/feminine with my natural hair???
Recently I’ve truly been feeling kinda chopped with my natural hair no matter what I do to it. I was crying earlier it felt like no hairstyle I do I can truly feel like a girl which is kind of odd but it’s the only way I can describe it. I recently took my braids out (I hardly get my hair done in protective styles) and I’ve really been feeling ugly lately with my natural hair. The photos are some things I’ve done with it that I’ve liked. But idk. I think I’m getting natural hair fatigue or something. Also my mom keeps asking me what I want to do with my hair for my 16th and I’m not really sure if I wanna be natural for my birthday or not. Last year when I was thinking about it I was 100% sure I wanted to be natural. Any advice would be appreciated bc I really don’t know submitted by /u/dasiasdaiseys to r/Naturalhair [link] [comments]

(26) to (29). Lost weight and found myself.
At 25, I got into therapy for my binge eating (and general childhood trauma lol). I made slow and sustainable choices to love and care for myself. I started a GLP1 to help with my blood sugars and weight, started going to the gym, and lost 160lbs! Along the way I did a professional color analysis and found my personal style. I’m embracing my natural hair color and waves these days and have never felt more like me 💗 submitted by /u/ElevatedAssCancer to r/GlowUps [link] [comments]

I will forever love how Bridgerton styles curly hair textures
I'm not sure people realize how rare it was seeing these types of textures represented as elegant or sophisticated, or just shown at all. I was actually surprised by the amount of tight curls shown properly styles throughout the show (wow, what a depressing sentence). I may have several things I don't like about Bridgerton's latest styling choices, but I'll always appreciate how they actually style natural curls instead of straightening every actor's hair. The world is changing 🥲 submitted by /u/BookwormInTheCouch to r/BridgertonNetflix [link] [comments]

How can I achieve this hairstyle? It looks very nicely styled on top, but otherwise natural
Hi! I'm curious how to achieve this bouncy, falling into forehead type of front/bangs, while keeping the rest of the hair looking natural and wavy/frizzy? Is it heat styling? Because it looks so slick, but when I try to heat style the front of my hair, I have to do the whole lenght or otherwise it looks bad. I have less hair than her but the same type. What most bothers me is that in the front i have baby hairs and making my hair fall more into my forehead seems impossible. :/ I tried with a straightener, small curlers, big curlers... Any tips? Thank you! submitted by /u/Professional-Pen4757 to r/beauty [link] [comments]

Why is caring for my natural hair “unprofessional"?
So I just need to vent for a second. I'm 25 and currently in esthetician school. Today in class, I was absentmindedly twirling my hair and lightly scratching my scalp when I noticed one of my twists was coming loose. No big deal, right? I decided to quietly take it out and retwist it. I didn’t pull out any products, brushes, or tools — just used my fingers. It was a small section, and I was literally just keeping my hair neat. Then my teacher looks at me and says, “That’s very unprofessional.” Excuse me… what? We’re all adults here. I wasn’t doing a full wash day routine at my desk. I wasn’t distracting anyone. I was maintaining my protective style, quietly and respectfully. Yet somehow, that was seen as unprofessional? What really gets me is that if someone with straight or wavy hair decided to quickly brush their hair, throw it into a ponytail, or even braid it during class, no one would say a word. In fact, I’ve literally watched my teacher braid her own hair in the middle of class — and no one batted an eye. But because I have thick, dense, kinky/coily 4C hair, me retwisting a section with my fingers becomes a problem. I’m supposed to just let my hair unravel and frizz up all day instead? Or am I expected to only touch my hair in private because its texture makes people uncomfortable? It’s frustrating. There’s such a double standard when it comes to how different hair types are treated. What’s “normal” and “professional” for straighter hair is suddenly “distracting” or “inappropriate” for natural hair. And it's not like I was doing a full reinstall or pulling out a whole product lineup. I just wanted to maintain my twist. Anyway, it rubbed me the wrong way, and I’m still thinking about it. It just feels like another example of how textured hair is policed in ways that other hair types never are. And honestly? That’s messed up. submitted by /u/babiface1430 to r/Vent [link] [comments]

"What happened to natural hair?" OP response
To sum it up, I posted a thread yesterday basically stating that I wish we as black women wore our natural hair more. No extensions, no wigs, no sew-ins, just our natural hair! (If anyone can put that thread in the comments, please do. I don't know how to do that) I tried to read as many comments as I could😅 I didn't expect it to get as much attention as it did. To those who joined in on the conversation, I just want to say thank you! Talking about natural hair is something I'm pretty passionate about, so it was nice to see different peoples point of view. I understood where everyone came from and I think we all can agree on this: There are no rights or wrongs to natural hair. We all have our own experiences with our hair and we personally know what is best for it. We should not judge those for wearing their natural hair out, or if they want to wear other styles to express themselves. At the end of the day, it's just hair. Thank you again, I'm glad I got more insight on the topic✨🫶🏽 And thank you for all of the compliments on my hair! I use mainly TGIN and Curlsmith products for those who asked about my braid-outs!💗 submitted by /u/preciousstarc to r/BlackHair [link] [comments]

What happened to natural hair?
I feel like society has changed the way we see and treat our natural hair. I think it's a shame that black girls and young black women don't feel comfortable with their natural hair because of societal standards. I'm glad to say that I love my natural hair and will ALWAYS be confident wearing it however I'd like to, whether if it's curly ( how I wear it most of the time) or if I want to wear it straight. We can still straighten our hair if we want to change it up, but why do we have to add clip-ins so that our hair appears longer? We can have braids or twists in our hair but why do we have to add hair to extend the length? What happened to regular natural hair styling? I've never felt pressure to change up my hair for society or others. I believe any style we want can be achieved without interventions. What are your thoughts on this? Whether you agree with me or not. And NO, I'm not bashing those who wear wigs, braids (with extensions), sew ins, etc. I just think it's a problem when we wear these styles to MASK our natural curls and cover up our natural, beautiful hair. Peace and Love🫶🏽✨ submitted by /u/preciousstarc to r/BlackHair [link] [comments]

Absolutely convinced that Charli embracing her natural hair led to her current success
Of course, the master marketing plan and the absolutely breathtaking album played huge roles, but I believe her hairstyles in the past also significantly impacted how she was perceived. When she debuted with True Romance, her natural, big, and beautiful hair was such a fresh and authentic representation of herself. That might have been a key factor in helping her gain a following. However, after that, Charli experimented with a variety of hairstyles that were the complete opposite of her natural texture. The bob for Charli and the huge blowout for Crash are prime examples, both styles required a lot of straightening, blow-drying, and dyeing, which, in my opinion, masked her true identity and made it harder for her to fully express who she was. As a fellow textured-hair girl, I’m so happy to see Charli embrace her natural hair in the BRAT era. I believe that her current look truly channels her personality and essence, allowing more people to connect with her and her art. submitted by /u/Available_Pressure30 to r/charlixcx [link] [comments]

ITS OKAY TO WEAR YOUR NATURAL HAIR FOR FANCY OCCASIONS
Just a reminder for all, it’s okay to wear your natural hair for fancy occasions. Unfortunately we’ve been told otherwise in order to fit into certain standards and speaking from my own experiences it’s exhausting and also expensive to feel like you need to get a fresh new style for a special occasion. If that’s what you want to do that’s totally fine but also you don’t have to! Rock them curls! 🫶🏾 submitted by /u/Unfair_Chapter7314 to r/Naturalhair [link] [comments]

Currently exploring my natural hair and I’m lovinggg it!
Growing up, I don’t think I ever left my natural hair out for more than a month past the age of 10 (I’m 19 now). I was always doing “protective styles” that were probably damaging my hair more than anything since I left them in for too long. It didn’t help when you constantly have your hair being told it’s not “good” hair. It got to a point where I was starting to become pretty upset, so for the past two months or so I’ve decided to snap myself out of it and start trying to style my natural hair. I’ve only done two styles lol (I’m lazy af), but I’m living for these mini coils. Both my mom and brother are loc’d up and keep trying to convince me to join them but I got commitment issues lmaoo. Anyway, this is my first post on Reddit and I just thought I’d share. Happy coiling! submitted by /u/Lee0004 to r/Naturalhair [link] [comments]

AITA For not wanting to dye my hair back natural for my aunts wedding?
I am not The OOP, OOP is u/Ch1ckenS0up777 AITA For not wanting to dye my hair back natural for my aunts wedding? Originally posted to r/AmItheAsshole TRIGGER WARNING: Controlling behavior Original Post Aug 12, 2023 For context, I am not in the wedding party. I am also a teenager so it’s not like they take me very seriously when I say I don’t want to. I’ve also been dying my hair for years, and it isn’t a bright neon color, it’s a dark blue that actually goes with the theme of the wedding (dark blue and burgundy) On to the whole story. My aunt is getting married in February a few states away, and obviously because I’m her niece I’m attending along with our whole immediate family and LOADS more (I can already tell this will NOT be a small wedding) My grandma mentioned to me things that she would want me to do with my hair, she’s always been nitpicky but she’s from a different generation so whatever. My hair is short and blue, and my natural color is brown. A few months later, my grandma called my aunt so that we could talk about my hair situation and my aunt wants my hair to be completely natural. I understand that it is her wedding and that’s why I’m even asking this. My parents, other aunt, and lots of adults in my life are all on my side. My grandma has been especially forceful lately with getting me to be more feminine (I was super girly when I was little, but now im more androgynous than anything) and I also dress in a more alternative style. Nothing too crazy, just not anything she likes. It feels like they’re just trying to get rid of all parts of my appearance that show my personality. Another reason I’m so opposed is because not only would getting my hair back to normal be EXTREMELY expensive, it would absolutely fry my hair (like, more damage than it’s already sustained). I might be the asshole because it’s her wedding, but because she never even asked me to be part of it I don’t see why it would be an issue other than not being good with her “aesthetic”. Am I the Asshole? TLDR: My grandma and aunt DONT like the way my hair looks and want to change it for my aunt’s wedding. VERDICT: NOT THE ASSHOLE Update Sept 10, 2023 So I recently re dyed my hair again for school (it’s blue still lol) and after that, my baby cousin was born (this is important I swear) so me and my cousins went with my other aunt (their mom) to go see our new cousin. Pictures were taken and sent to the family group chat so my other aunt saw my hair. I didn’t receive a text about it until the next day and believe it or not she really was nice about it. Of course she wants my hair back to normal but we ended up compromising and I’m going to dye my hair a darker and more muted blue. I’m not a HUGE fan of the blue she wants for me but as long as she isn’t super upset and I get to keep my hair blue, I’ll do it. I love my aunt and I want her to have a good wedding, but I have my boundaries and I want her to respect them (which she has been) I can’t post pictures in this subreddit but if y’all want pictures of our texts and how my hair looks just give me a subreddit to post them in lol. Thank you guys for all the advice! AITA for refusing to recolour my hair to a more natural colour for my Dad and future Stepmothers wedding?
I'm a 19 year old girl and my dad is marrying his girlfriend of five years, she wants me to be one of her Bridesmaids as it'd look great to have me up there, i'm not particularly close to her but we're civil so whatever right? I agreed telling her i'd be happy to do so and to let me know if she needed any help with wedding things. I got a call from her last week telling me that she wants me to go to her hairdressers with her so my hair can be made a more natural colour like my natural brown or even a deeper chestnut as she thought that'd look nice on me, I was confused by this and asked her what she was talking about, she told me i'd stand out too much in the bridal party with my hair. I have waist length hair that is an Ombre of purple and pink, my hair has been this colour for the past three years so it's not like I sprung it on her out of nowhere just before the wedding. I told her I wasn't about to ruin the style I spend a lot of money and time to upkeep just for her wedding and she implied that at 19 I was getting too old for such a childish style and it was really for my own good and reminded me how i'd told her if she needed anything for the wedding to let me know, she then told me this is what she needed. I was shocked by this and pointed out i'd meant something like picking up party favours for the reception, dress fittings and the like not changing my hair. I told her I wouldn't be doing this sorry and if she felt that way I just wouldn't be her bridesmaid so I didn't stand out too much. She was upset with me and the call ended rather coldly. I've had my dad phoning me every so often since then trying to talk me into changing my hair, he is implying it's not a big deal and he'll pay to fix my hair after the wedding...that's not the point, it'll be hell to get my hair back to this and bad to recolour it so soon anyway and I don't see why I have to change my style for her, I can just be a guest (though honestly i'm not even wanting to be that now). He told me I had to be her bridesmaid as she'd told everyone I would be and how i'd embarrass her in front of her friends and family if I refused now as they'd think we're not close. I've pointed out to him that we're not and it's on her if she made it seem like we were to people she knows. I told him if I had to be a bridesmaid she could accept my hair as it is or i'd just stay home. I dunno, maybe it's my inexperience with weddings as i've never been to one before but surely this is too much for them to ask of me? Maybe I should just cave in as my dad has said he'll pay to fix my hair after but the idea of going through all the work to fix it and the damage it could cause is upsetting to me. Should I just suck it up for my dads sake? My Mum is pissed over this and has been fighting with my Dad on this matter. submitted by /u/FaithlessnessSuch911 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

UPDATE - AITA for refusing to dye my pink hair back to my natural hair colour?
Original post I decided to post an update mainly to thank everyone who suggested buying a wig. I found a salon that sells and styles wigs a few days after my initial post. I wanted to try it out before the business dinner so I wore a wig for a date night with my husband to see what he thought. While I didn’t mind the wig, my husband didn’t like it at all and ended up telling me to just go to the business dinner with my pink hair. The business dinner went well. The client’s wife loved my hair and kept calling me adorable, which killed any awkwardness I was feeling. I don’t actually have pink hair anymore as I dyed it brown for my sister-in-law’s wedding at her request. My husband was more sad about me going back to brown than I was. submitted by /u/aitainpink to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Black women with natural hairstyles, like curly afros, braids, or twists, are often seen as less professional than black women with straightened hair, new research suggests. Findings show that societal bias against natural black hairstyles exists in the workplace and perpetuates race discrimination.
