Is Plant based milk and cheese kosher ?
Hey guys!! I need help!!! So my Jewish friend is visiting me on Monday, next week for dinner with her newly wed husband who is also jewish. While they're not super orthodox (as told by her) they do follow a lot of things, one of them being, following a kosher diet. The thing is I'm Indian and i really love cooking traditional food for the people close to me. But unfortunately most Indian food includes the use of dairy even in meats. The good thing is since I'm a Hindu, i do own seperate utensils for vegitarian and non vegetarian food (i also have a seperate induction to cook non veg on). Plus I'm lactoce intolerant i don't have dairy in my house, however to cook the dishes i want to I'll need to use plant based products. And so I'm confused if i can or should do it. Please help me, Any and all tips are welcomed and much appreciated 🫶🏼 UPDATE!!! Hiii!! Thank you soo much for all the amazing advice. I really really appreciate all of it, so today i got done with all the shopping (I made sure to double check everything for the kosher approved mark) except for the meat I'll get it on Monday itself, the store manager told me they get the new stock on Monday so that's good!! ANNDD I did talk to my friend and she wasn't expecting me to do all that (Yea she's silly like that ofc i would have) so yea we had a slight teary eye moment. But basically what I got from it was that they try to follow the kosher diet as much as possible especially when cooking at home but when visiting friends and family they don't expect them to go above and beyond. And a lil something about my kitchen, So as i mentioned earlier I'm a Hindu and in my family specifically We have different everything for meat and vegetarian food, different utensils, different stoves even different sink and spices. Because we make a lot of vegetarian dishes as offerings during prayers, it makes sense to segregate things. So while my kitchen isn't exactly kosher i think it's safe to call it Jewish cooking friendly loll Anyways thank you so much again!! I'm so excited for the dinner on Monday!!!! 🩷🩷🩷 submitted by /u/IncreaseFlaky8735 to r/JewishCooking [link] [comments]

Dairy farmers want plant-based drinks to stop using the word 'milk'. But does it really confuse consumers? "A UK court has ruled that an oat-based drinks company can no longer use the term "milk" in its product marketing. Dairy farmers say the case highlights the need for Australia to tighten its labelling laws around what can be called milk. Debate has raged over whether non-dairy products should be able to use labels such as milk, yoghurt and cheese. Now, the Australian dairy industry has seized upon a recent UK Supreme Court ruling, in which an oat-based drinks company lost a long-running legal battle to use the word "milk" in its marketing, to push for tighter labelling laws in Australia." https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-02/dairy-farmers-say-plant-based-drinks-should-not-be-called-milk/106389828 What do you think? Plant based milk and cheese companies are not tricking unwitting consumers
Many places like the EU and Canada have rules preventing plant based milks and cheeses from being called milks and cheeses or using terms which dairy claims.A common argument why these companies cannot label their milks and cheeses as milks and cheeses is that this protects the consumer from being tricked. This is dairy industry propaganda and any risk of tricking happens the other way. Plant based milks and cheeses are currently significantly more expensive than dairy ones for reasons including being a less developed technology and not getting dairy subsidies. Oatly and presumably other plant based milk companies report negative operating margins. An FDA report that looked into the tricking concern in 2023 determined that consumers generally understand that these do not contain dairy milk and pick them partly for that reason. There is little incentive for oatly or its peers to trick customers by pretending to be dairy milk. Their customer base seeks them out because it is non-dairy milk and they would compete against cheaper products and reduce their own differentiation against them. Everywhere except for packaging, people use the terms without much confusion. People would look at me weird if I asked for soy beverage in my coffee instead of asking for soy milk. No one is confused if i don't call it soy beverage or soy drink. People have referred to plant based milks as milks for thousands of years, and we continue to use it in everyday life today and this idea that its not understood as milk is a recently manufactured position by the industry. The harm of this is that consumers who want to consider other options to compare prices or nutrition may need to know the non standardized names of the brands beforehand, hurting product discovery. Advocates of these naming rules will bring up nutrition concerns while reducing the ability to compare nutrition by making sure the substitutes are of different product categories and don't show up in the same product searches. To whatever extent trickery happens, it is by the dairy side. Products like lactose free dairy milk or products that contain dairy milk often don’t clearly label themselves as dairy products. If proponents of this clear labeling were honest about their intent, they would have at least handled the lactose free milks that don’t have a clear dairy label on them as the average person is less likely to understand lactose free dairy milk technology than plant milks. I think it’s more likely that consumers looking for plant based options end up tricked into lactose free dairy than that consumers looking for dairy end up with a plant based milk . The dairy industry while relying on our subsidies and government recommendations for their business model also defended further rent seeking by successfully selling the myth of the incompetent consumers who might accidentally choose their competition. submitted by /u/dirty_cheeser to r/DebateAVegan [link] [comments]

Sign the 'No Milk Tax!' petition to end the surcharge for plant-based milk at US coffee chains
Petition here. Great (and cheering) news article about the campaign here. Default petition message that you can personalise sums it all up nicely: 'I’m writing to ask that you to eliminate the upcharge for non-dairy milk. It’s unfair that customers including myself are penalized for making a choice that’s better for my health, better for the planet, and more inclusive. 'More than 350 US chains including Starbucks, Dunkin, Dutch Bros, Gregorys, and Blue Bottle already offer non-dairy milk options at no additional charge, acknowledging that dairy is one of the largest contributors to their carbon footprint. Dairy also consumes disproportionate amounts of water and land compared to plant-based alternatives. 'But this isn’t just a sustainability issue. It’s also about equity. Nearly 50 million Americans—disproportionately people of color—are lactose intolerant. Millions more live with milk allergies. Charging extra for an option they need is not just unfair—it’s discriminatory. 'If you truly care about sustainability, inclusivity, and your customers, the non-dairy tax doesn’t align with your values. Until this policy changes, I’ll be taking my business to competitors who’ve embraced more forward-thinking pricing.' submitted by /u/Caffe44 to r/vegan [link] [comments]

"Are you stupid? The milk lobby thinks you are." (Oatly campaign against EU regulation to prevent plant 'milks' being called 'milk)
Interesting campaign approach by Oatly to try to fight off an amendment to European regulation that would have prevented manufacturers from calling their plant milk-like drinks 'milk'. I particularly like the video - short, fun, and likely to be shared way beyond vegan and activism circles. They apparently got half a million signatures on their petition, helping to put pressure on the regulators. (My understanding is that the amendment was defeated but that it is nevertheless not legal in the European Union or UK to use the term 'milk' for plant 'milks'. I don't know the rest of the history.) submitted by /u/Caffe44 to r/vegan [link] [comments]

Plant based milks shouldn’t be called milks
I get that it probably came from the notion that they’re substitutes for people who cannot or do not want to drink cow’s milk. But why do we still call it milk? By definition, it is not milk as it does not come from a mammal. I don’t know where I heard it- but soy doesn’t have udders, so it shouldn’t be milk. submitted by /u/Successful-Shopping8 to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

"That's not 'milk', it's just plant juice"
Anyone else hate when meat eaters criticize what we call our food? They despise when we call vegan versions of things 'cheese', or 'milk', or whatever. I guess I've been watching alot of Instagram vegan recipe reels lately and when I dare to open the comments there's a bunch of whiny carnivores saying stuff like "don't call it a steak, that's not a steak, that's plants, call it what it is". Like honestly it doesn't need to affect them at all. We name these things after their animal based counterpart because that's kind of (sometimes) what they were designed to be like, minus the cruelty. I call my pan fried mushrooms 'steak' sometimes because it sounds natural to me. Who cares? And they call us snowflakes... submitted by /u/Significant-Soup-893 to r/vegan [link] [comments]

My partner says they’re uncomfortable with me because I’m not on a plant based diet after a year of dating.
My partner randomly decided that they’re uncomfortable with me because I eat eggs and dairy. They’ve gone completely vegan in the past month or so. I’ve been vegetarian for 7 years now, but that’s not enough I guess. They say being with me would make them a hypocrite. They’re thinking of leaving. I’m more pissed than anything. I spent a year with them and now they’re thinking of leaving cause I like milk! I thought about marrying them even. And now they’re choosing a fucking cow over me! Feels selfish to me. Is it wrong that I’m mad? What do I do? Any advice is welcomed. Im kinda at a loss for words currently. My fucking partner chose a cow over me. Edit: For those of you calling me a horrible person and cow rapist after I literally just got broken up with, geez thanks! I can’t afford to go vegan and i don’t think it’s healthy for me. You don’t have to DM me to tell me to off myself like several people did. submitted by /u/IllustriousMousse319 to r/LifeAdvice [link] [comments]

Since the dairy industry has been disputing / suing over calling plant-based milk "milk", can we get an activist lobby to dispute/sue for calling boneless wings "wings"? They're not wings.
They're generally battered chunks of chicken breast. Consumers will get confused. We need to set things right. If a precedent gets set with the whole "milk" thing, I bet we can find several of these animal ag descriptors to start disputing. (spoiler tag added because the description might feel gorey to some people who are especially sensitive to that.) Hopefully I'm super unoriginal and someone already has this in motion. Have you heard of anyone doing something like this? submitted by /u/ii_akinae_ii to r/vegan [link] [comments]

Milk and Eggs are Not Plants, so stop putting them in "plant-based" foods!
I just came across these Morning Star breakfast Sausages that claimed to be plant-based, but when I looked at the ingredients, it said they contained milk AND eggs in them. Since when were eggs and milk classified as a vegetable? This isn't the first time this happened. I came across several brands that said 'plant-based' on the title but contain milk, eggs, or both. To all the multi-billion dollar companies, if you want your veggie-based label and milk/eggs too, just call it vegetarian! That word exists for a reason. Stop trying to be slick. submitted by /u/Oki-J to r/vegan [link] [comments]

For those who switched from drinking cows milk to plant-based, why?
I drank milk growing up but soon started to migrate to oat milk because….I’m not sure why, I think it was trendy. I’m starting to reincorporate cows milk and it’s been going just fine. I’m curious, for those who have switched, why? Since cows milk is the nutritionally most complete out of all of them :) submitted by /u/sarah_gresham to r/nutrition [link] [comments]
