I had a lot of fun and even discovered a real passion for painting! But I wonder if it's really art? Artistic freedom?... In my opinion, art should be personal and come from our own imagination, starting with a simple brushstroke. Am I wrong? Perhaps paint by numbers is a good starting point for learning how to hold a brush, taking artistic liberties (as I did with the original artwork), and also mixing colors. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. I'm going to continue with paint by numbers for now to improve my skills, but I've already invested in new brushes (NickPro). Hey everyone, total beginner here who’s done a couple paint-by-numbers kits and is really enjoying them in theory. I keep seeing finished pieces here with super crisp lines, rich color, and an overall look that feels more like “art I’d hang up” than “craft project from Michael’s.” I’m clearly missing some techniques, so I’d love advice from people who’ve leveled these up. A few specific questions: 1. Crisp lines: How are you keeping edges so clean? My biggest issue is the brush going slightly over the lines, especially in small sections. Is it: better brushes? a specific brush size? thinning the paint? just lots of practice? 2. Color saturation: A lot of my areas still look a bit translucent even after two coats. Do you: prime or gesso first? layer more coats? mix or adjust the paint? use different paint altogether? 3. From hobby to “hang it up”: What are the biggest things you’ve done that made your pieces go from obviously paint-by-numbers to something you’re proud to display? (Sealing, framing tips, touch-ups, blending, etc.) I’m not trying to win awards, I just want something that looks good in my house and doesn’t scream “I bought this on Amazon.” Any tips, habits, or “wish I knew this sooner” advice would be hugely appreciated. So I’ve been thinking about a certain type of commander design — the ones where, once you pick the commander, the 99 basically builds itself. I refer to these as Paint-by-Numbers Commanders. You know the type: -You sleeve up the “right cards” and you’re done. -They’re strong, consistent, and usually popular. -But once you’ve played it… you’ve kind of seen them all. On one hand, I personally find them one-note. It feels less like deckbuilding and more like following the recipe on the back of the box. These decks will tend to outperform similarly powered 99 simply because of the commander difference. On the other hand, they’re fantastic for newer players — you don’t need a spreadsheet to make the deck work, and the synergies are obvious. So I’m torn: are these good for the format as training wheels / onboarding tools, or do they flatten the creativity that makes Commander fun? Maybe a few wouldn’t be bad, but it just seems like the standard WoTC formula these days. Playing normal commanders against them feels like playing at a disadvantage. I have found that these commanders tend to play well against themselves, but create a less than desirable play experience if you are not playing one of them. (You have to team up to take them down every game, and you can tell just by revealing the commanders how the game will go.) -What commanders do you think fall into the “paint-by-numbers” category? -Do you enjoy playing against them, or do they feel samey after a while? -Do you enjoy playing them? Which ones? Who/what do you play against? -Are there to many these days, and are they saturating the format? In other words, when did you get GOOD enough for a painting to look proper, and not just an amateur's work? How long did it take you and how many "decent but not perfect" paintings did you go through? I'm very new to this hobby and just done my FIFTH painting. My first was abstract flowers, very kid-friendly kind of painting, the others were increasingly detailed nature shots. I love the process, it's fun, but honestly… all of what I paint still looks like, well, paint-by-numbers. Colors mix at random, my accuracy still sucks, and when I make a mistake, that's it, no clue how to fix it. I've tried being more careful with layering and detail work, but it still doesn't have a polished, painterly look some of you manage to get in your photos. So what are some "tricks" that helped you as a beginner? And do some brands just have better results than others? I got all of mine at a local crafts shop, but now looking at more specialized sites so I can get a custom paint by numbers kit (which I hope will help). But I'll take any recommendation on brands or online shops so I can just order them. I'm interested in giving PBN a go but there seems to be so many questionable stores online. Many show digital pictures of the image, but not actually the paint by numbers version, which is far less detailed. This is really misleading. Also notably a lot of the art appears to be AI generated, which is fine, but it gives a certain look which isn't overly realistic. Many of these stores tend to advertise as "licensed artworks" too.
